RE: Going clutchless on Blackjack 55
ORIGINAL: philip clemmons What size socket do the 1/4'' nuts take? Is it a standard 1/4-28 nut with 7/16'' head?
Put the tools down and back away from the boat!

RE: Turbine Powered Airboat
I would still expect there to be some back pressure which could adversely affect the boats handling. Best to be straight out the back.

RE: Turbine Powered Airboat
I would think you would want to trim the transom so that your thrust tube can exit straight back parrallel to the hull bottom. With the angle you have I'd expect it to be pushing the hull down into the water. Given that you will not have any lift from a propeller in the water you'll need to rely on the hulls aerodynamics to provide the lift needed to get on plane.

RE: Blackjack testing data
I don't have any data to support it either way. The con's are a spinning prop that you need to be aware when launching the boat and you'll need to develop the toss technique to prevent it from stalling when it hits the water. The pro's are less moving parts to break, less weight to spin up should mean quicker to rev and you can ditch the water pump. I miss starting it floating in the water but other then that it's no big deal. My clutch failed early on due to poor manufacturing standards. One of the stand offs that holds the clutch bell frame was shorter then the others causing it to place the clutch bell at an angle other then perpindicular to the output shaft. This lead to a premature failure of the brazed joint between the bell and the square cable receiver. Fewer parts to break is always a plus.

RE: Going clutchless on Blackjack 55
I changed to the square drive collet and then bought a custom solderless flex cable from Warehouse Hobbies. You'll need to change out the strut bushings as well, they can help with that also.

RE: Blackjack testing data
ORIGINAL: philip clemmons There is no way to get 9.5 mm...................the stuffing tube would almost be on the bottom. I tried to bend it up a little but it wont move. Guess I need to get aggressive with it. Is it normal to have to move it up that far? I would think more prop out would slow the boat down, but I guess if it gains 1000-1500 rpm it may pickup.
How are you measuring? Also did you make sure your setup was neutral?

RE: Blackjack testing data
472 seems to have been your best prop there. Setup for that should be between 9.5 mm and 6 mm gap between sponsons and prop shaft ferrule. 6 being 70% and 9.5 being 60% of the radius in the water. I'd be starting at 60% and working my way down. I've expect that the 2" should be usable you just need to find the right length for it. For me it's 14" to the end of the band or 13" to the center.

RE: In the 50's
ORIGINAL: magnum57 Just wondering about the BJ55 hull at the speeds your hitting have had to heavily modify the inside of that hull. I mean the stringers, control box, motor mounts etc ?
I've had my stringers glassed in and the stuffing tube has been redone where it passes through the hull. Dockman, have you ever taken it out and driven straight toward yourself to seehow it's sitting on the water? It's tough to tell just running cross ways infront of yourself. I'm thinking if I could get less lift and add pitch it might be more stable. I look forward to what your results are with the strut at 8mm. That would be closer to 60% of the prop in the water.
ORIGINAL: Dockman
ORIGINAL: PEERPSI What's the diameter of your ferrule? That 49.9 run at 12 1/2'' was you best efficiency yet. I'd almost say somewhere between there and 12 5/8''. RE: Turbine Powered Airboat
They are impractical from a cost stand point without a doubt. The additional fuel consumption doesn't help either. Never having had one I have to wonder just how far they push the human and radio limitations when trying to acheive top speeds. I still want one though, badly!

RE: Turbine Powered Airboat
ORIGINAL: Dreamin Hemi With the cost of these units, that would probably be the most impractical r/c boat I've ever heard of!  That type mounting would have absolutely NO protection for the turbine from spray, nevermind a flip.  It's not a question of IF, but rather WHEN. Would be cool to see though!  <img alt='''' src=''http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/msn/shades_smile.gif'' />
It would seem the empirical evidence suggests the turbine will survive the ingestion of water. That said a turbine powered airboat does seem impractical but then again did we really need to have a man walk on the moon? Of course not but it inspired generations and we learned a heck of a lot along the way!

I'm no V hull expert but shouldn't those turn fins on the transom be perpindicular to the hull bottom not the deck? As for the Proboat sticker, the exhaust trim piece looks like a Proboat piece.

RE: Ozzie boat stand/cart
I have to walk from a car park to the shore usually more then 500 feet. Generally takes to trips. Fuel, tool box, stand and TX first trip. Then boat on the second trip. I have a new place I want to try where there should be no weeds or rocks, British Navy tied there ships up there 400 years ago. There are abonded concrete piers that make a perfect birds eye view point. Only problem is the shore line is rocky and will be tough to lauch from. Maybe I need to build a winch system or marine rail?

I'm shocked and thoroughly disappointed at the lack of a beverage cooling device! Aside from that it's brilliant! You don't have a copy right on this do you? Virtual duck for cover from all the people that are going to start up on the having beverages with you while running a gas powered boat! I was talking pop!

RE: Tinkering with my BK55
Three things I would try next if I were you is 13" on the pipe, 5.5 mm on the strut and set the L needle to factory spec and tweak the H needle instead. If you plug those numbers in the spreadsheet you'll note positive trim gave you the lowest efficency of all the runs. You still need to figure out what's holding back the RPM's. My guess is your pipe in too close. Of note your top speed showed an efficency of 76%. If you can get the engine to turn >17000 RPM you'd be at 55 MPH if you maintain the efficency. Looks like you're going to crack 50 at least!

RE: Tinkering with my BK55
I'd say you have a little room to go out. 1" seems big to me for this size of motor but then again I know very little about the physics of 2 stroke exhaust systems.

RE: Tinkering with my BK55
Where are you measuring to and from on your pipe? I just noticed it looks like it's in much further then mine. Using a stiff piece of copper wire I measure from the exhaust port surface on the engine to the furtherest end of the 2" band. Right now I'm at 14" which puts the middle or what would be the zero band at 13". Going from 13 1/2" to 14" is what pushed me into the mid 50's, along with ditching the water pickups. What offset is your header? Is it still stock?

RE: Tinkering with my BK55
I don't think the problem there was the pipe. Something else was going on. If you load the engine up it resists RPM's it's just that simple. For some reason you had more slip then in your other runs. If you think of it like a canoe the more often you can stroke that paddle the faster you will go if the paddle is dipped into the water the same amount ever time. If you dip the paddle in half as much but twice as often speed will be the same. I still think you need to head higher on the strut, keep it neutral, say 8 mm allen key between the ferrule and your table top. That would have you just over 60% in the water with the cone of thrust aimed straight forward. What you could do for ease at the water front is set the strut with a 6, 7, 8 and 9 mm spacer scribbing the strut in each location. Do four quick runs and then focus on the best setting moving half way on either side of it toward the next scribe mark.
