RE: Need Modellbau V3 Tornado Input
Again, let's keep focused on the issue here. Keep in mind: It's a $500 jet frame and I have also have read alot before my purchase. I am content with what I have and I fully expect to find a few flaws. If this is the worst then I am tickled to death.

RE: Need Modellbau V3 Tornado Input
I got it taken care of Ian. I picked around the outside of the fuse where you could seen the glue line. The tube came out with minimal effort. I elongated the hole, attached the wings and reglued the tube.

RE: The new Tornado sport jet
I had a Falcon and just received my V3. It might have started as a Falcon but it is not a Falcon now. As soon as I picked up a wing I new then what I had. The Tornado is WELL WORTH THE MONEY. You can't buy it or similar anywhere else for any better price. The little work I will do to it is well worth the $1000+ that I saved.

That is a great page you have Ian. Thanks. Do you have anything about the fitting of the canopy? And thank you to everybody. I can tell you that this is by far not a Falcon.

Need Modellbau V3 Tornado Input
To start I would like to keep this post focused. With that said, I received my Tornado today. And I have a few questions. 1) Are those little "Robart" style hinges going to work? They look a little small. 2) The left wing incidence is not correct assuming the wing profile should match the fuselage. Fix it or leave it alone?

RE: Buggy Not Going As Fast As It Should!!
You need to be able to measure the voltage and amperage. The voltage is most likely fine or the esc would just quit if it has a low voltage cut off. But if your pack will not discharge at a high rate then there is your problem.

I won't arue about the question of rpm but if you think adding a tuned muffler/pipe won't help then you have another thing coming.

RE: looking for speed model
The Jetts do cost more but by the time you by another engine with a tuned pipe they aren't that much more. Anyway, YES!. Get a tuned pipe! Also, a 13-10 is killing the motor. You want to get 16000-18000 from that motor. Try in the 8 to 9 in pitch range.

RE: looking for speed model
Ditto on the revolver. I have a quickie with a Jett 40 that does about 125. The same day I saw some delta wings doing 115 and I would have thought they were doing 150. Speed is deceiving.

RE: XYZ ENGINES
ORIGINAL: jstanton Ron, I have been looking for any infomation on the XYZ engines I could find. I came across a supplier in China that has posted on there site comments from customers who have used the XYZ 50. One of the customer posted he is getting 8000RPM with a Xoar 18x8 prop. So it looks like this XYZ 50 engine of yours is going to be the ticket for many a RC Flyer. If you lose on the average of 500RPM for every 2 " you go up in prop size and keep the pitch the same. That means the XYZ 50 should spin a Xoar 22x8 prop very close to 7000RPM. That is very good in my books. I am now really looking forward in getting my hands on this engine.[:D]
My Evolution 26 turns a Zoar 18-6 at 10000rpm. A 50 turning an 18-8 at 8000 ain't that great.

RE: Sundowner 50 Arf
I would like to see some speed numbers if available. It is very difficult to judge speed without a radar gun. Sound and size plays a very big part of what you perceive. I owned the 80" version with an Evolution 26 and Vess 15X8 the plane was between 115 and 120mph on radar. (Somebody stated that radar lies. Tell that to the judge and I am sure you will not have to pay the speeding ticket) The problem was that it handled so good and the relatively low rpm of the gas engine made it seem much slower. It just did not excite me. So I was looking at the 50 ARF and different motors and came to the conclusion of a .90 sized engine. I do not want to invest in a Jett but I do not want to waist the effort on a motor that will not turn up. Whatever I use will have a tuned exhaust and the plane should have some hopes of at least 120mph. Any thoughts as to an alternative to the OS 91 that will give some rpm? Is the plane good for 120+?

Real Prop Info on the Sundowner w/EVO 26
We ran a couple of props on a Sundowner, Evolution 26, Bisson muffler combination and I thought I would pass the information along. Before anybody says the results are impossible or inaccurate, all the readings were taken with a Stalker radar gun. Outlaws and Quickies were metered the same day and the speeds from those were where they should have been so I feel confident that the information I provide is correct. So if you disagree, please don't clutter this thread. The first tests were done with an APC 15X10. Upwind 100, down wind 110, so average 105. This relates direct to what McConville originally posted. This prop never seemed to let the engine unwind even though it was turning 8900rpm on the ground. Also, acceleration seemed to suffer and the speed seemed to drop when gaining altitude. We got a Vess 15X8 and noticed a difference immediately. The biggest was that the prop made more noise and I think that was cool. The Vess seemed to provide more thrust which seemed to solve the problem of decreasing speeds while pulling up. The Vess also allowed the engine to turn up harder in dives which the APC never did. We forgot to tack the prop on the ground as well as take upwind measurements but with all the excitement from the improvements that the Vess provided we did not care. Oh, the best thing was the 115mph down wind readings. In conclusion, the Vess 15X8 flew the plane much better and I am confident in a speed increase as well. I would say anywhere between 5-8 mph.

RE: Real Prop Info on the Sundowner w/EVO 26
I do not know what the plane weighs. I did not believe that going down in pitch would help my speed any so my buddy bought the prop and told me to try it. Well, it worked so I paid him for it. Thrust must account for something. After racing boats for years and seeing the difference that props make I should have been a little more willing to try some new on the SD. I have been suprised to read of the low speeds coming from the 35. I do not understand that as my 26 speeds were in line with McConville's numbers. I have been think of selling the 26 and trying the 35. You should try the 15X12 like Mike reported. Vess may have something in that range to try. From what I have seen most people try and then keep a Vess, however they are mostly sport/3D flying.

RE: H9 Sundowner
High compression is what causes detonation but adding shims is bad. You want to keep the piston as close to the squish band as possible. If compression is too high then you need to increase the bowl volume. The small area between the piston and squish band provides a much of the cooling foe the engine. Nitro cools engines. Tight head clearance cools engines. Correct compression fires the nitro. All this adds up to more power. Higher the nitro, the higher the compression. If you are not running a tuned pipe then you are spinning your wheels for the most part.

RE: H9 Sundowner
Flew my Sundowner /26 combo. The plane cuts the air with superior ease and with precise control. You point and it goes. Nice. The Evolution 26 and Bisson muffler turn an APC 15X10 8700rpm on the ground. By radar upwind was a solid 105mph and down wind 118mph. I do not care what a calculator says. These numbers match Mike's and both came from radar so believe what you want. Take offs need to start slow with a steady increase in power. I can not punch and go with this one. Landings, as said, will require some runway and patience to wait for it to slow. If you need to abort a landing, power up, count to 3, and then start to gradually pull up. Acceleration is slow with this setup. In summary, the 26 does not seem to turn up very well, however it does go 100mph. I am going to try some different exhausts which will probably conclude with an inverted engine and a tuned exhaust down the side. The plane just looks like it needs to go faster. I would probably go with the 35 if done again. As said, it is super smooth and it always flys fast. For some of the others.......if this is your second plane, it won't be for long. Definitely get a seasoned pilot to take off and land for you. Even after that this thing cruises at 60-70 mph or it drops from the sky and it will tip stall in a heart beat. That is a big difference from a trainer. Just a little more advice to save you some headache and money.

RE: Evolution 26GT Throttle servo on firewall?
I have one plane 12 inches away and the other with the servo on the side of the engine box. No problems. Those 81's will fail if the get in any kind of a bind. A standard servo does not weigh that much more and they are cheaper.

RE: Muffler restricting my Evolution 26???
Dave, I do not know why I would drop in pitch. I did the numbers and I would have to do about 2200 more rpm to achieve the same speed. That would put me around 11,000 rpm which might be a little much for that engine. Or not? We did open up the ends of the stacks and increase 200-300 rpm. Dick, I was not really wanting to increase power in a dive I was only providing that information to what I think is the muffler not allowing the engine to rev past a certain point. It seems with any other plane coming down at full throttle that you can definitely notice something is happening. Speed , noise......something. This plane seems the same no matter what. So without going to a tuned setup, is there a more prefered muffler?

Muffler restricting my Evolution 26???
We flew my Sundowner and Evolution 26 combo yesterday and it appeared that the engine was restricted in it's rpm. It was almost like there was a brake of some type. We were spinning an APC 15X10 at 8700 on the ground. OK, not too bad. But the problem was that coming through a dive or turn the engine did not noticably encrease in rpm. If the plane seemed any faster through a dive it would almost immediately loose its speed as soon as it leveled out. The best we could guess was that the Bisson muffler was resricting the engine rpm. I have to assume something is wrong if I enter a dive at 100mph and come out of it at near the same speed. Any thoughts? Thank You.

RE: Sport Jett 40, pipe, Diamond Dust Questions
MJD, Now that you mention it, I agree that I am probably over loading the engine with the black pipe. This explains the richer setting. I will try some of the suggested smaller props by Jett. I would have done so before but as I said I did not want to over rev the engine. Over loading is just as bad but I did not run the engine long in either case. Thank you.

Sport Jett 40, pipe, Diamond Dust Questions
I have what I assume is a Sport Jett 40 since it is visibly identical to the one pictured on the Jett site. It was bought used but still has a very tight "squeaky" fit which so be good, right? I called Jett and told him what I was doing and he said I needed a "quickie" pipe. At least that is what I thought he said. Anyway the new pipe is black and apparently identical to the red pipe that was on the engine. I compared the two under the following conditions: 30% Wildcat fuel 8.8 X 9 APC prop Engine mounted to the plane with a bubbless tank to the side (not mounted in the plane but using the same fuel lines) The red pipe turns 18,000 rpm consistently The black pipe turned about 17,500 - 17,800 but with a much richer needle setting I do not run lean and I do not burn plugs. Questions 1) Why do I need the black pipe as opposed to the red? 2) Am I turning to many rpm and need a bigger prop? Or, should I use a smaller prop as recommended by Jett? I do not want to over rev so I thought I would ask before I tried. 3) Any idea how fast this will go on a Diamond Dust? Thank You, Preston

RE: Anybody mixing hotter fuels?
Bearings may very well be at risk. The boat motors use a phenolic retainer as oposed to the steel cage. The phenolic has a higher rpm rating in general.
