RE: Evolution 35 Gas Engines
Thanks very much for your advice on the octane rating. I will definately use 91 octane from now on. I believe the air flow over the engines is sufficient, but I will monitor this in the future. Thanks again for answering my posts, it just show how helpful the internet can be for the customer and the manufacturer. Ben

RE: Evolution 35 Gas Engines
Thanks for your interest. I used Amsoil Denominator synthetic oil, mixed at the recommended 30 to 1 with 87 octane gasoline. I used APC props 20x8, 19x8 and 18x8 along with the inverted muffler that can be purchased with the engine. I I flew the plane successfully twice with the 18X8 prop and with the fuel mixture set extremely rich. At this setting if would not come onto the two cycle sound until at full throttle for a few seconds. As far as the cooling issue, the engine was broken in without the large GeeBee cowl. The cowl was installed for the four flights. As you can imagine, I have wondered if the engine over heated which then caused the scoring problem along with the engine quitting. The cowl has a plastic radial installed with the plastic in front of the inverted Evolution engine cylinder removed to allow cooling. There should be enough air exiting the cowl to allow sufficient cooling. The purpose of this thread is not question the quality and usefulness of this engine, but to make sure I can avoid the problem of the engine quitting prematurely. Was the scoring on the piston and cyinder wall cause by not breaking the engine correctly, running the engine too lean, or simply overheating? Who can be sure, but since the engine has now been restored to an almost new condition, I would like to do my best to make sure the problem doesn't happen again. As I stated in my initial post, I followed the user guide in the breakin process, but I could never get the engine to run at full throttle for the maximum time of one minute as recommended, after about 30 to 45 seconds the engine would fade out and quit. To get the engine to stay running I had to run it extremely rich. I am now in the process of repairing the 1/4 scale GeeBee and when completed I would like nothing more than to fly this plane with this terrific engine. Sincerely, Ben

Evolution 35 Gas Engines
I purchased a new Evolution 35 Gas engine a little more than a year ago. I broke the engine in as instructed using synthetic oil. The engine would run at full throttle for about 45 seconds and then fade out. I decided to run the engine extremely rich and try flying it. Out of four flights, I had two dead stick landings. I took the engine off the plane and removed the muffler. In inspecting the piston through the exhaust port, I noticed scoring on the piston. I then removed the cylinder head, where I found scoring on the cylinder wall, piston and ring. Horizon Hobbies fixed the engine under warrentee and I am very satisfied with their work. I would like to hear anyones experiences with these engines good or bad and any advice in breaking this engine in, ex. Lawn Boy oil vs synthetic oil. The engine flew my 1/4 scale GeeBee very well until the engine quit, sadly GeeBee R2's don't land very well dead stick. Ben

Nitro Models 40" GeeBee
I have tried flying the Nitro Models 40" GeeBee with the CG set at 2.4 inches behind the leading edge. The manual says 2.6 inches is the recommended CG location. After reducing the recommended control surface throws, I finally got the plane in the air, it violently spun into the ground the first time a tried to bank and turn the plane. It acted as if the plane was severly tail heavy. Has anyone had any luck in flying this plane and at what location did you have the CG. Ben

RE: Nitro Models - Honda Ha-420
The engines were purchased from Grayson Hobby. They were rated to replace 25 to 35 glow engines. The engines flew the plane fine. The plane itself may not handle larger engines. The engine pylons that are attached to the wings, are only so strong. Best of luck. Ben

RE: honda jet
I epoxied the tail on, along with the recommended screw and dowel. It worked well, as even after the crash, the tail was still attached solid. Best of Luck, Ben

RE: honda jet
I put together the same plane recently. Sadly I didn't have great luck with mine. I used electric motors with 4500 Mah LiPo's. The plane without retracts wieghed about six pounds, well within the manufacturer's recommendations. Upon the first attempt to take off, the plane ran off the runway onto the grass, damaging all three fixed gear. I recommend you reinforce the fixed gear mounts when assembling. I had one decent flight. On the second flight the plane was flying well, when I decided to do some easy aerobatics. I couple of rolls went fine when I decided to do a loop. Upon giving the plane up elevator to start the loop, there was a strange sound from the plane. The Honda Jet would not complete the loop and fell off into a stall turn. The plane became uncontrollable. I fought for control of the plane for maybe fifteen seconds, then the plane crashed into the ground. Upon inspecting the damaged plane, the elevator was in perfect condition, eliminating it as the cause of the crash. The right wing was badly damaged and the aluminum spar assembly ripped from the wing. One of the electric motors was torn loose of its mounting pylon. In talking to other persons at the flying site who witnessed the incident. We agreed that something on the plane had failed when given enough up elevator to do a loop. The strange sound upon entry into the loop was not normal. Did the wing spar system fail upon the stress of a loop or did the motor come loose? Who knows for sure. In my opinion the wing spar is a weak. I am responding to your post, not to discourage you in any way. I just hope you can avoid my experience. I received many compliments on the looks of the Honda Jet, on the ground and its short time in air. I came close to ordering another one. Best of Luck, Ben

RE: Nitro Models - Honda Ha-420
I have used GH7820 06 Brushless Motors with 45A ESCs, from Grayson Hobby. The ESC do not have BECs and I have a separate battery to power the radio. The instructions for the plane show the ESCs in the main fuselage. This would require a long leads from the ESCs to the motors necells out on the wing pylons. I was informed by fellow modelers, that this would be a mistake. I placed the ESCs behind the motors inside the pylons and ran 12 inch wire leads from the ESCs to the batteries in the front of the fuselage. I am using two Thunder Power 4500 3 cell 11.1 batteries to power the motors. Last week I made the first successful flight and flew for about eight minutes. When I recharged the batteries, they took about 3000 mah each to recharge with my Triton 2 charger. At this time I am using Master Airscrew 10x8 regular props. I had intended to use APC 11X7s electric props, but one they were to long and hit the fuselage and also because of the design of the props they rubbed against the necells. I would have to extend the motor mount rearward to use the standard APC props. I hope to use APC 10x8 pusher electric props, which would hopefully be more efficient with more thrust. In regard to installing retracts. I intend to fly the plane with fixed gear for a number of flights. Once I am convinced the extra weight can be handled, I would like to install retracts as well as struts. Ben

RE: Nitro Models - Honda Ha-420
I finally got the plane together and got her in the air. The plane weighs about six pounds with no retracts at this time. The fixed gear supports must the be reinforced as they are flimsy at best. All three gear failed upon running off the pavement onto the grass. The electric motors flew the plane OK. I had to use regular props because the electric pusher props were not easily available. I hope to replace the standard props with APC Electric 10x8 pushers, which hopefully will be more efficient. The kit recommends 12 inch props, but even 11 inch props will hit the fusalage. The Honda Jet sure looks good in the air, even with fixed gear. I still have to get used to electric power, as this is my first electric. The lack of motor noise sure is different, as I still equate motor sound with power and speed. If and when I feel the plane will handle the extra weight of the retracts, I hope to install them. Ben

Nitro Models - Honda Ha-420
I just purchased a new Nitro Models - Honda HA-420. I'm interested to hear from anyone who has put together and flown this plane. I'm would like to know what engine setup was used and what type of retracts were installed if any? Finally, any advise in regard to setting up the plane for flight would be greatly appreciated.

Enough said Jim! Sadly the Adrian Page 1/5 scale GeeBee is no longer with us. I am building a larger 1/4 scale GeeBee also kitted by Adrian Page. Hopefully it will fly as well as the 1/5 scale GeeBee you saw me fly.

RE: Civil Discourse
Well Red, I'll take that bet. Today the President of The Woodland/Davis Club,is Jeff Wiese, who was one of the three individuals thrown out of the SAM Club. John Casey is the saftey officer. At no time has either individual tried to use their position to get revenge against anyone in SAM or against SAM itself. Such actions would not be tolerated by the members of Woodland/Davis. If they mistakenly tried, I would be the first person to stand in their way. All members of the hobby community are welcome at the Woodland/Davis site. While I don't speak for other members, I am confident of which I state. In regards to Jim Skids comment that I had the right to leave the SAM I started to go to another Club, Thanks Jim. Hopefully you will always be on the winning side of the issues in life.

RE: Civil Discourse
Gentleman, as I am also a founding member of the SAM, I must finally enter this thread, to give my side of this sorry affair. Is John Casey telling the truth about the events of the SAM? Yes, I believe he has presented his side of the issues in a clear and correct manner. The SAM board has taken it upon itself to rule the club with power the original founders of the club never intended. The original constitution stated the power was with the membership. The ruling board was to administer the memberships wishes. Sadly, the recent SAM board decided once they were elected they would do as they pleased. If you were in the minority and you questioned anything, you were told to go join another club. When the atmosphere at the flying site and at club meetings became intolerable to me (ex. verbal and physical abuse). I decided to join another club. In my opinion, John Casey is an excellent modeler and flyer. He is a respected member of the Woodland/Davis Club and holds the position of Saftey Officer. I state these facts because I too belong to that club. With this said, I wish John would stop posting these negative post on RCU. Every time I read the new threads, it brings up bad memories about the Club I was so proud to be a part of, first in starting and then as a member for twenty years. In regard to the SAM, I wish them well.

RE: Outlaw flyers
I have been an AMA member since 1978, recently I have had the unfortunate experience to see how the AMA Vice-President does his job in my district. The question is, how many fliers would belong to AMA if it was not required at their flying site?

RE: GP GEE BEE
I put an OS 120 in my GP GeeBee and used standard servos. The aircraft takes off and flies beautifully, landings can be a little tricky. Keep the weight down and enjoy.

RE: Best racers banned in Sacramento
Thanks Skids, for putting out the "Majority Opinion" for those interested. With all respect, the three individuals expelled from the club didn't spend one dime of the clubs money. All they did was defend themselves after being expelled from the club by a majority vote of the SAM board not the membership. They had no opportunity to defend themselves in front of the membership, either at a club meeting or in the club newsletter. When they asked for a membership list to inform the membership or their side, the SAM board refused. Skids, you state the majority backs the SAM board. Why is it then that the membership has voted in opposition to the boards wishes on numerous issues in the last year and half. Why have four board members resigned their position in that same time period. I know from them talking to them personally, that two resigned of because problems with their fellow board members. Sir, you state the Private Detective found no proof of a club member shooting down airplanes. Why has this report not been provided to the membership, this report was paid for with club money and the membership deserves to see it. The President stated in a newsletter, that a condensed version would be forthcoming in a newsletter. To this date this has not happened. Well Skids, I guess I took your advice and joined another club. The folks in the "Majority" drove me out. I will not be renewing my membership in the SAM club. I will not belong to a club that restricts its members rights to question issues, to put forth ideas for club discussion and most important the rights of people not considered in the majority to have a voice in club business. Best Wishes Ben Ponzo

RE: Best racers banned in Sacramento
Thank you Stanley for having the guts to put out the truth about the SAM site. As a founding member of the Sacramento Area Modelers I am now in exile, flying at another club in another city. Why, because I cannot tolerate the manner in which the SAM board is ruling the club. If you threaten a fellow member at a club meeting, you are still a member in good standing, shout down a recognized speaker at a club meeting and later physically threaten them in the parking lot, you are still a member in good standing. Be accused of shooting down aircraft on several occasions, you are still a member in good standing. If you go to a meeting and point out things the board doesn't want the membership to know, you are out of the club. If you receive a threatening phone call at your home regarding your points of view at club meetings and then dare to try to play a recorded message of said threat at a club meeting, you are expelled from the club. If you circulate Emails written from a club member where he writes he saw a fellow club member shooting down airplanes, you are expelled from the club. If you see a fellow member shooting down aircraft and report it to club officials, you are ignored and then when your observations finally become known to club members, you are hounded out the club. I want to believe that the majority of the club would not tolerate these actions, but in trying to inform club members of the what I believe is the truth, they either do not want to hear about it or are afraid they will be the next person to be threatened. In response to club members questioning the ruling boards actions, instead of being more responsive to the club membership, the board puts forth a new club constitution giving the ruling board more power. This constitution was ratified by a vote of 26 to 1. With a membership of over 160, 27 people show up to vote on changing the rules that restrict the rights of the membership. I truly wish the majority of the members of the Sacramento Area Modelers the best of luck. Some day I hope to be able to return to the club I help start and for twenty some years was so proud to be a part of.
