RE: How do you calculate when the prop will stall
Thanks for the info, what is the final result unit? However I was trying to find out at what rpm the propeller stops providing thrust. I believe that there is a peak efficiency rpm for propellers and just beyond that they are inefficient and then stop providing thrust all together. Iwondered how to calculate that.

How do you calculate when the prop will stall
I was wondering if there was a quick way to find the stall rpm of a given prop.

Thank you so much for your input. I'm like you, I don't want to wait until the Equinox arrives. I have resisted the temptation to charge without the balancer. I think I will get a blinky if I can find one.

Great Planes Electrifly Lipo Balancing
I'm pretty new to electric flight and I just bought an Electrfly 2100 lipo 20c with balance port and was planning on getting the Electrifly balancer, but the balancer is not avail until late June. I currently have the Polycharge 4 charger but have not used it yet on this battery. Does anyone else have this series of batteries and if so how do you balance them? Thanks, all info is appreciated

RE: First Time Tail Dragger
My second plane was a UCANDO .46 after I started with a Hobbico Superstar. It truly was an easier plane to fly, it doesn't stall, it's a tail dragger, it can fly laps just like a trainer and it can do EXTREME 3D. It was reccomended to me by club members as a plane that would hone my basic skills and be a platform to try 3D manuvers. You can't hardly bring it in too slow and when it stalls it just drops the nose slightly. It also makes a nice plane to try out pattern manuevers.

Great looking 4*'s everyone. You guys must have all gone to covering school because I can't cover to save myself! I have had A LOT of time this winter to build and that led to several modifications: Flaps Winglets Hinged Canopy hiding the remote fuel fill, remote glow, switch and charging jacks Counter balanced rudder and elevator Concealed cowl Inverted engine Mac's polished pipe It's turning out pretty good so far, I hope it flies!!

Nice going Swager! Looks real nice. My project has stalled a little, I switched jobs and am also going to school in the evenings so time is a little tight. I did a unique mod to the cowl, I think it turned out pretty cool. Let me know!

RE: Best scale photo!
Of course that was a real post. It's not a troll. This thread has a criteria, either a photo meets it or it doesn't. How hard is that. When someone posts a pic that does not conform to the previously set criteria, they shall be lambasted. If you don't like it, go start a forum about Mediocre Scale Photos.

paladin, have you read the criteria for posting pics in this forum? The Me 109 stands for everything this thread is against. That is a screaming billboard for what not to do. Apparently it was an "event" and not a scale contest. It wouldn't place in the top three if it was the only one competing. Bad, Bad, Bad.

RE: 4 Star 40 building has commenced!
Still working on it. I have been really busy at work and I am also going to college. However, I just lost my job thursday so that should give me a lot more time to get her finished up! I just installed the flap servo yesterday and also put in counter balances in the elevator but I don't really like them and they probably won't be all that effective. So, I'll probably undo them. If I would just build according to the plans I would be done by now! I spent two evenings on the counterbalances and probably won't even use them. Oh, well. When I get to the covering stage, I'll post up some more pics.

RE: Takeoff Complete
uncljoe, You may not have anyone holding up the wingtips on the F-18, but it isn't a scale photo. Bull-RCU, Nice Hellcat. Looks like a photo taken by someone on the ground about to get blasted! It doesn't matter is someone is holding up the wings or not. Good picture. The only nitpick I have is that the angle isn't quite right, it's too head on. I know you didn't take the pic but to whoever did, I would recommend a longer focal length lens to blur the background and also, shoot a little lower. Just MHO. I think the photo fits just fine in here. It's not the best but is is a scale photo.

On landing your foward AIR SPEED can be reduced to less than the crosswind. And I quote myself, "you can lose a good bit of lift." A true statement.

What maneuvers give you the most EXCITEMENT!
What maneuvers really make your hair stand up and knees start shaking? What maneuver do you do that makes you climb to a 100 feet when you are finished just so you can settle down? Full throttle knife edge dragging the wing on the ground? Full throttle inverted digging a trench with the rudder? Harrier torque rolls with the tail wheel dragging with a big gasser? Merely taking off in an overweight warbird s-turning down the full length of the runway?

RE: X-country R/C flight with a full scale plane?
The difference with the Piper cub is that the Model was being controlled on the ground as the full scale flew around it. But, yes it could be done. And probably not as difficult as you think. I'd like to know what kind of range a 50cc gasser would have. You'd have to find a bunch of airports close together and how would you land? One of the problems would be if you dorked a landing on the runway, the full scale would have to deal with it on its landing. But again, all can be overcome. I would be more inclined to tow it behind. That way you would only have to worry about directional control and not the engine and you could fly as long as you wanted.

RE: Model flying schools ????????
A person would have to treat it like a vacation. Pay for tuition, motel, food, and travel. If that's what they want to do with their vacation buying dollar, great. But I for one have a family who would frown on me taking a vacation to learn to fly r/c. Obviously there is a small demand for it but after you add up all the cost, I'd rather buy a big gas plane and spend a month learning for free. Just my opinion. I'm not saying it is good or bad, it just wouldn't have worked for me.

RE: Model flying schools ????????
I think $60 per hour is a little steep. I would liken it to a hobby shop where you wouldn't be in it to make a lot of money, you would just do it for fun. $60 bucks an hour would be right up there with full scale airplanes. I have seen ads for the Colanades r/c community, if you could set up something there where you are the resident instructor that might work. But you are only looking at a few hours per person. An hour of actual flying is a lot considering a single flight only lasts about 10 minutes. And after 6 flights or so, a lot of folks could solo by then. Additionally, it would only be feasable for someone in the immediate area (50 miles or so). So why would people go to the "Flight School" from, for instance Ohio, and spend a week with motel and food just to learn to fly when they can do it in their area for free. Don't get me wrong, I think it might work but there are a lot of things to consider.

RE: I've done the impossible!!!!
Stayed home! It happens, wind is inherently inconsistent and it can be a challenge to land, but your flight skills are probably twice as good as they were before you went out. If the cross wind is blowing stonger across your wings spanwise than the air that you are flying into blowing on your wing chordwise, you can lose a good bit of lift. Also if wind gets under one side, it can push it up and over looking like a tip stall but it really wasn't.

RE: Wind is your Freind
I was bringing in my UCANDO with 10mph gusts blowing at a 45deg angle to the runway, I had it in perfect position, 15 feet high with no speed and then the wind quit. The nose dropped and I pulled up and up and up, it finally flattened out just before it hit. I flattened the gear a little but no biggie. That is the only drawback to pulling power all the way back and letting the wind fly you. If it quits, you ain't flyin no more.

RE: 4 Star 40 building has commenced!
Kerklein2, Check out post #77 on this page. Here is what I used: Metal Turkey Basting pan (at grocery store for $2.50) Cooking Thermometer (at grocery store for 2.50) Rit dye (Pack of Black, Pack of Gold 2.99 each) Heat the water to between 125 and 130 degrees F. I added one pack of gold and a half pack of black. Let it simmer at 125-130 and throw in canopy. Try to get it fully submerged. Make sure it doesn't touch the bottom or the sides. Let it simmer for about 4 minutes and then take it out and see if it is dark enough. If not, put it back in for 4 minutes at a time till you get the desired tint. Voila! Nice canopy.

RE: 4 Star 40 building has commenced!
Swager, When you joined your wings and cut the servo bay like they say, did it seem to you that there wasn't very much rib-to-rib contact left? I have the ribs meeting pretty well in the joint but looking into the servo hole in the top it just seems like ALL of the strength would have to come from the plywood joiner. I am thinking about fiberglassing the inside of the wing as well as the outside.
