RE: BAE Hawk vs F-16 (fun poll)
For me, despite spending a lot of time flying full size Hawks, the full size F16 wins hands down! The F16 displays I have watched are all awesome - lots of noise, burner, high alpha, high speed, high G - say again - awesome! The solo Hawk displays are, by comparison, quite sedate. There is still high speed (bear in mind that max speed at air displays is 600kts, and the Hawk does 550), high G (Only 8G for the Hawk vs the F16's 9), but only medium noise, no burner and definitely no high alpha, but it does do smooth precise aerobatics. Regarding knife edge flight, this puts huge loads on the vertical stab (Fin for non aerodynamicists) mountings so is not recommended in the full size aircraft. The display pilots have, over the years, extended one point of a 4 point roll as they pass crowd centre to appear to knife edge. It serves no purpose in proper military flying (that's air combat I'm talking about!) either, so is pointless unless you want to say 'look at me knife-edging'! If we are talking models, then I like the model to fly as close to the full size as possible. Here the Hawk wins hands down. The noise of a model turbine fits, the manoeuvres the model can fly are very similar and it looks right. Put together with a simple wide track undercarriage for good ground handling and some predictable flight characteristics, its a winner. Model F16's just can't match up to the awesomeness of the full size, and for all the afterburner rings you see fitted, you can't quite get away from the lack of noise! Yes, the F16 models do high alpha, but so do plenty of other models, including my F22. Apart from that, the F16 and Hawk models fly very similarly, but the F16 is not particularly good on the ground and the complicated undercarriage makes it potentially unreliable. When it comes to looks - F16 wins hands down! It is a beautiful aircraft. That said, the Hawk is probably the best looking trainer out there and I think it looks right. (I am probably biased as it is the jet I have the most time on!) Which to choose as a model - I want both! [:D]

RE: Super Bandit hinges
ORIGINAL: roger.alli Actually, the BARF, (now that it has gear doors) is a very desirable airframe
Hi Roger - this is one of the upgrades I plan for mine. They are just a little pricey to import to UK though... We had two Bandits at Merryfield yesterday - both with P100's. The Classic appears faster (but that may be because Jamie doesn't know any other throttle position than fully forward! [:D]) One thing I noticed is that my BARF rolls left when elevator is applied - tracked down to the fact that the original builder didn't mount the elevator horns the same - the left horn is 3mm shorter than the right!! Another small job needing my attention...

JT - who's painting your Bandit? Look forward to seeing it. Mine flew this weekend - thanks for the P100 Dave! Flies very nicely, and will be perfect once I get it dialled in! I know mine is only a BARF, so I'm not worthy of you classic/super guys, but I like it! [:D]

RE: Jets Over Kentucky Part III (Spectacular Mid-Air Crash)
Great video and a spectacular crash indeed! Sad loss for both pilots involved, but all models eventually end up being rekitted! (or should, IMO - never been a fan of seeing good flying models 'retired'. As they say - better to burn out than fade away!) The question is, what's the next project?

RE: How often do you change your Socks... UAT socks that is...
Never for me too! I've replaced the outer bottle on one sock - bottle was ruptured in a crash, nothing wrong with the innards - so £5 spent on new bottle saves £60 for new UAT! I also only put mil spec fuel in my jets as it has a fungus suppressant, so there is no fungus anywhere in my fuel systems.

RE: Has the extreme Heat stopped your flying
One thing this thread shows is that it doesn't matter where you are in the world - people are people! We all love to complain about the weather! Too hot, too cold, too wet, too dry, too windy! [:D] Great to see that modellers everywhere are united in their weather watching! I'd love to send some of the wet cool weather we have here in the UK over to the States - as long as you send some of that sunshine back in payment! [8D]

RE: spektrum vs JR
Eagle - from what I understand having read a lot of stuff on Forums across the world on the subject (Note the caveat - it is only my understanding, and may not be 100% accurate), Spektrum own DSMX technology (and also initially DSM and then DSM2). JR got on board with Spektrum as they seemed to have cornered the 2.4GHz market and got agreement from Spektrum to use DSM and DSM2 technology. I believe there was some sort of inter-company agreement that Spektrum would make the lower end transmitters (DX5, DX6 DX7) and JR would make the high end transmitters (9X and 12X, and latterly the 11X). Then Spektrum started producing the DX8, then the DX10 and finally the DX18, all of which were starting to infringe on the JR sector of the market. At this point there were some concerns about DSM2 technology regarding potential bandwidth saturation at large events as DSM2 hops between 2 frequencies selected at switch on. So Spektrum developed DSMX technology, which is a true frequency hopping system, but also backward compatible with DSM2. Only in the States can you buy a JR radio with DSMX technology - every where else JR was just DSM2. JR was a little annoyed by the new Spektrum radios, which were getting into the high end of the market, and not in the spirit of the original agreement between Spektrum and themselves. So they have developed their own 2.4GHz frequency hopping technology, which is called DMSS. Having got burned by the JR/Spektrum collaboration, JR has gone back to developing it's own stand alone radio technology in DMSS, like Futaba has always done with FASST. Back in the days of 72MHz (35MHz here in UK), JR and Futaba PCM technology was not compatible, and now we have many more incompatible 2.4GHz technologies (DSMX, DMSS, FASST, etc) from the multitude of manufacturers. This is not a one is better than the other statement: Any of the technologies are good - but none are perfect as it is a radio link and any radio link is open to potential interference and cannot be 100% reliable - modern technology reduces the chances though. I use JR on DSM2 - never had a glitch or brownout or any other issue, but I do take time to set up my airborne power supplies correctly. Plenty of other modellers use Futaba FASST and Spektrum DSM2/DSMX without any trouble, but there will always be modellers who complain that interference (brownout/lockout in 2.4GHz parlance) 'shot' their model down. Occasionally they are right but more often it's finger trouble by the monkey on the sticks. Personally I like JR radios - the programming is simple and similar between different sets. That, and the build quality of the transmitter, is why I moved from Futaba. Having said that, the new Futaba 18 Channel (Really a 16 Channel) looks very nice and from what I've read the programming is easy too. Getting back to the OP's question of Spektrum vs JR - for me it's JR. And the fact that my JR radio works with Spektrum Rx's is great - I use Spektrum Rx's in my foamies and simpler aircraft. JR only in my Jets!

RE: 'JMA TOPGUN 2012' RNAS MERRYFIELD MAY 19/20
Glad everyone enjoyed the weekend! Weather was on our side, some fantastic models and some great flying. Worthy winners of the trophies - congrats to Dave, Steve and Geoff! It was great to catch up with everyone - banter levels were huge, which made it excellent fun when not flying! [:D] Big thanks to everyone for their support and particularly the JMA for all the background work that makes this event so smooth. I just help to oil the right wheels, which is the easy part! Good news is that we are already pencilled in for next year and that feedback regarding noise complaints is fairly minimal at the moment. as I said to the Station boss - just tell the whingers that it's the sound of freedom - in miniature! The best thing about the weekend is that we raised some good money for The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, the proceeds of which will go towards helping our boys in blue as they get rehab from serious and life changing injuries sustained in Afghanistan and other operational theatres. Thanks again to everyone who attended. Looking forward to the next Merryfield meeting already! PS - Apologies to Tancock for being so successful in 'Operation Deny Bandit'! I have one for sale if you want it badly enough - not sure you can afford it though! [:D]

RE: Queens Jubilee Flypast
Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton's south dispersal was looking great packed with 38 Hawks (including ground and airborne spares) ready for the flypast - 27 jets in a single formation has some sort of a record! Was good to catch up with old mates, many of my students now back at Valley as instructors! Great effort by everyone involved - 78 aircraft in total involved in the flypast.

RE: 'JMA TOPGUN 2012' RNAS MERRYFIELD MAY 19/20
Hi Fellas Just been down to Merryfield to chat with the OIC. He has the list of names. Be aware that it is a military establishment - if your name's not on the list, you're not getting onto the airfield, so don't just pitch up and try it on. Regarding overnight storage, i had a look at the workshops - two rooms about 3 x 4 m, maybe slightly larger, and one larger room filled with chairs - can be moved to make space. Probably enough space for 10 - 15 models. I will have the keys - rooms will be locked overnight, inside a razor wire fenced compound (also locked) inside the perimeter fence of the airfield, so pretty secure. Models will be left at the owners risk, but I reckon this is more secure than in a van in the car park of a travel lodge! [:D] See you on Saturday/Sunday or both! [8D]
