RE: Futaba 9650 servos for pattern
ORIGINAL: bondtasha is the torque of the jr 3517 sufficient at 42 oz in
Most run that servo at 6V. I don't have problem on those in a smaller plane, but larger surface than our 2m elevator.

RE: What's the story with JR 2.4ghz?
Joe, 9303 & 10X 72MHz? DMSS (Dual Modulation Spectrum System. Not compatible with DSM or DSMX) module/rx combo is already out. It shows 12X module version (12XMV), 9303 and 8103 to be compatible. Not sure why it only lists three transmitters. No manual available. I am planning on XG11 from current DSM2 9303 which I've been using since it came out. absolutely 0 problem so far. Programmed at least 50 planes on it. What radio are you using right now? Ihncheol

RE: Post all your
JR DS3517 actually came out with plastic gear version as Joe mentioned above. Later, Metal gear versions came out, but DS3517 standard got discontinued. Reason was the heli guys kept on breaking the gears on 3517. I have a few of those at home too. Was going to use them on Kyosho Flip, but decided to go with metal gears instead. For use on elevators of Pattern plane should be good.

RE: Joe's Electric Integral Build Thread
Verne, I believe the reason for not replacing the output gear is the bearing. I tried to remove the bearing once, but decided not to after a few try. Didn't want to crush or dent a gear tooth. Those bearings aren't easy to pull. I believe they are machine fit. Joe, Did you order a custom made gear or the tall new version? Ihncheol

I am still looking for more information on the C50 14XL and OS/Futaba ESC. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_10891227/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm Based on the thread above, PWM has been factory set to 32Khz which can't not be changed. Not sure how C50-14XL will react to this. Better call Aero-Model on Tuesday. If no good, I will just return the ESC & programmer. Weird way of building the ESC without PWM adjustment. IP

RE: help with mix digital servos / a123 batt.
Are you saying that all other servos are to be used 6.0V? All the servos in the market with the exception of High Voltage servos, do work just fine on 4.8v or 4-cell NiCd. Make sure to remember the S9252 servo IS for 4.8V Since almost all the 4.8v rx packs come out of charger above 6V, but drops quickly. I wouldn't go any more than 5.2volt as in Heli gyro. Tech Aero regulator has lowest voltage of 5.75. I use those on my JR standard digital servos that have 6.0v spec. So, even setting the regulator to lowest setting may not work. PLR5-DR2 or other Tech Aero regulators have default 6.2V which I think too high for the S9252. SPECS for S9252 Speed: 0.14 sec/60° @ 4.8V Torque: 92 oz-in (6.6 kg-cm) @ 4.8V Weight: 1.8oz (50g) Power Supply: 4.8V (Futaba does not recommend using 6V) Dimensions: 1.6 x 0.8 x 1.4" (40 x 20 x 37mm)

RE: a123 or life batteries rx and tx
I use LiPo for Rx power with regulator and without regulator for HV servos. However, make sure the servos can handle the higher voltage (little over 7 volt off the charger) if don't plan on using regulator. Some servo manufacturer specifically has maximum voltage. Some people said their servos buzz initally, but works fine as the voltage drop to nominal voltage. I haven't seen LiFe transmitter pack made for the Airtronics SG-10. I am still using the NiMH stock. Better ask Airtronics or Airtronics sponsored pilots. Most of the guys are using LiPO if they go optional.

RE: 62
Your elevator halves not aligned. Left elevator is lower than right elevator. It will cause roll to right. Thus, left aileron trim. Fix the elevator alignment first. Two ways to align. First method. Going Dual Elevator servos. if you can't find the stock elevator control horn, cut it off. Cut out the elevaotrs (CA hinges?). harden the right elevator on the control horn location (may want to peel off a little of covering to add epoxy). It has slot already cut out. Make both elevator halves even thickness on control horn location. Drill and use Dubro 493 or something similar. Don't use reversing Y. USE separate channel to use programmable mix or any other dual elevator function on the radio. Use robart type hinges or regular plastic hinges if you have hinge slot machine. CA hinge is really hard to remove. I used Robart hinges. The other way. If you can, cut the center of the elevator joiner, add two 1mm thick x 5 or 6mm width carbon strips on top and bottom with epoxy while elevator halves aligned. Since the stock joiner will stay in angle, you may want to shim between the thicker strips on top and bottom.

Jason, BLS153 has black nylon gears. How do they hold up? I've had a couple of new out of box S9650 with gear slop. Replaced them under warranty. The other plane got JR DS3421. If not Futaba or JR, Savox has 1250MG. http://www.savoxusa.com/SearchResults.asp?Search=mini+digital

RE: New pattern ship recomendation
ORIGINAL: camaro101
ORIGINAL: rcpattern If you read the star of the Vanquish build thread you will see the servos I used are good digitals, but not top of the line expensive. They work great for the plane. Quite a few have mounted the Himax in the nose with no problems. It is a very popular combination. I personally recommend wood as it is very durable and if you do have a small accident, it is very easy to fix. I will say the Vanquish is very well built, especially in the landing gear area, so tearing them out takes some work. You can't go wrong with either the Vanquish or Monolog and both are very competitive in all AMA classes. Both will perform well with the Himax on very economical batteries as well. Arch
Arch I followed your build it looked great. Looks like the servos you used were about $90 each and it needs 5 thats what i was concerned about. $500 for servos Or am i missing something
Plane doesn't have to be 2m. 2m x 2m is maximum size. People try to remove/reduce the weight to make it under 5 Kg (a bit over 11 pounds). 42volt (fully charged 10S pack) is maximum voltage allowed in Pattern. Looks like you mis-understood all backward. Your 50" angel will be fine for Sportsman although it is a little in small size. Most of the contest will allow you to fly even larger than 2m for sportsman, but not something like a 30% extra. If you are going to try Intermediate, I would suggest larger plane around .60 size or larger. Minimum would be 62" Osiris. However, you will want something larger than 62" Osiris after trying a few contests in the Intermediate. For servos, JR, Airtronics, Savox, Futaba, Spektrum, Hitec servos can be all be done under $500.00 Depending on the type of servos, overall cost can be some where around $300 to $450 Any of above manufacturer servos can be mixed without any issue as long as there isn't any voltage restriction. Just don't go too cheap on servos. Don't have to be metal gear also. I've seen a lot of people trying to go too cheap on servos after spending $$$ on plane. I think equipments especially radio/servos are investment for a long term service with reliability. So far, Futaba, JR, Airtronics, Savox are the ones that I have good experience with. Hitec isn't as good in my experience especially on large planes. Since I fly JR, I mostly use JR servos. DS9411 for Ailerons, DS8411 for Rudder, DS3421 for elevator halves are for basic 2m setup. DS9411, DS3717, DS8911 all high voltage on 2-cell lipo directly fed to receiver will be in my next setup. Airtronics 94746M, 94761Z, 94775 will work fine. Futaba 9551, 9156, 9650 will work fine for Futaba transmitters. So far, my experience on 9650 hasn't been very good on three small planes. one of them was dual elevator servos that had gear slop out of box (0 flight). A few JR transmitters and Spektrum transmitters tried with different centers. Had to replace two. Servo worked really well in Heli and several other planes when not used as dual elevator. Savox 1232SG, 1251MG, 1250MG will do a fine job for under $300. Make sure to use large enough receiver battery with very good regulator. For regulators, Tech Aero is very good, Jaccio is very well known, Maxx products, Duralite etc. Vanquish is good. I have one new in box waiting for a new owner since I ordered another plane. BJ craft is good too. BJ Park designed most of the the Fliton planes. Just pick a plane you like. HiMax, Hacker are fine motor. Axi is good, but Hobby-lobby isn't doing well nowadays, so support? ESC, Castle Phoenix 85HV (now discontinued), ICE 80HV, Jeti Spin 99 for Hacker. Some runs Castle ESC with Hacker without a single issue. Some do have problems. Not sure why. Hope this helps, IP

RE: 62
3/16 to 1/4" ?? that is a whole lot. if you can get a piece of blue or pink foam about an inch thick, and longer than the wing root rib, try putting the wing panels side by side (top of wing panels facing each other) to check the straight line on both comparing each other. that much trim always affect something. Like ytell said, if you can take a few pictures of fully assembled plane from rear, we should be able to tell you more about it. Any other Pattern pilots around you?

RE: How hot is too hot to fly?
Neil, 5 min? How fast are you flying? My intermediate flying last 7.5 min from take off to landing. I just can't fly that fast at all. Even with 62" Osiris, I fly about 6.5 min for intermediate sequence. I take my battery out mostly right after landing. I don't taxi the pattern planes. So far more damages doing it even with 3" wheels. Bill, what sequence were you flying? Master's or FAI? That 345 seconds temp peak seems abrubt. What motor/esc combo is it? Max amp was 59.xx I will check the BVM for the aluminum sheet. IP

RE: 21x14 or 20x13???
Which 21x13 ?? APC has been selling 21x13WE and new one out is 21x13E. Blade width is totally different. If you look up Hacker A60-7S thread, someone mentioned 21x13E and 21x13WE. For braking, I think 21x13WE should be better. Isn't it? Dave, I can't get the 21x14E anymore. Great Planes discontinued it saying "Discontinued by MFG". APC doesn't show them anymore. Trying to see if I can get 21x13E, 21x13.5E from APC. So far, none of the distributors carry these sizes. Are you coming to Fort Scott or Hillsdale contests? IP

RE: 62
houckj, Gator or World Model adjusters should work fine. World Model's adjusters are cheaper I believe. You need to get a good incidence meter. Robart (not very accurate and doesn't align well), Hangar 9 works ok but need to make sure to remove the slop on the rail and meter mounting. I've seen people using digital meters of different kind too. Laser type requires reference surface like wall on the back. Not bad, but requires space. I use two Hangar 9 nowadays. both have different angle after calibration. Choose one to be a reference and mark the other one the difference. Reason using two is that I don't have a whole lot of space to work on the plane and a firm way to hold/lock the fuse without movement. So, I put both in one wing panel and move one of them around while check the other one to stay on same. I believe many of those who built Osiris (including myself) followed the instruction to glue the H.Stab, will have up trim. I was told factory slot for the stab should have correct incidence set, but I don't think it is right. I couldn't move my stab forward or backward as it was really tight. 2nd one wasn't that tight at all. Also, alignment with wing tube wasn't a good idea. wind didn't have correct angle on 2nd one. I checked twice with wing panels and with wing tube. Try to describe your problem as much as possible. Do you have mix set up for the elevator and ailerons on rudder? Adding adjust is a good idea, but make sure your wing can move at least 0.2 degrees without the wing hold down screw, pushed in all the way. I am waiting to see how 2m Osiris will look "inside". Picture of outside doesn't count. I will only decide after looking at the inside.

Does anyone has a copy of instruction manual that came with Saito 120S DP (Dual Plug, Pumped)? I just got one in a trade. never been fueled or installed. It was sold in 1994. No instruction manual came with it, but has all the hardware. I called Horizon Hobby Products Support, but they don't have any available or know how to set it up. RE: 62
Mine also does carry left aileron trim. Did you check the incidence of the wing panels? Mine has different incidences for wing panels. Haven't tried adding plywood rings for incidences yet. Mine also flys with tail down, and up elevator trim. A little tail heavy CG, but noticible. When I worked on the one for my friend, we went for dual elevator servos. Checked the horizontal stab incidence also. If you push the horizontal stab all the way forward, it will have positive stab incidence of more than 0.5 degrees. We pulled the H-stab backward to set the incidence to 0. Much better than mine. It also has left aileron trim. Checked the wing panel incidence. it was about 0.3 degrees off. Weight difference doesn't matter much on this plane unless it is a lot. Mine has heavier left wing panel. Plane will dvelop slop in the alignment hole in a few months. My left wing moves about 1/16" on trailing edge. Since I started flying 2m, I haven't flown it much. I am trying to set it up again to fly slower and similar to my Abbra.
