Masters judges - FAI 1-1/4 down snap
Hello Masters pilots.. If you are a Masters pilot, chances are you will be judging FAI at some point. In the sequence, there is a center stall turn with 3/4 roll up, and 1-1/4 snap down. When judging you may see the snap stop short and roll the last part of the maneuver to 'stay on the down-line' line. In the following example, you can see this on the right side. The goal here is to let you think about what you may be seeing. sc

RE: Snap Rolls - P09
Wow, we have three power-house flyers responding.. sorry to open this up. Thanks for the comments. Chad, I recall our conversation at the Nats and I am flying the snaps as we discussed at that time - and it's working well. I will add, if I picked a CG POINT on the fuselage, and the snap rotated around this point, and the fuselage was in a stalled condition during the snap, with a high wing angle of attack (the plane still traveling on a straight line based on the POINT in the fuselage), this 1.25 snap would end with the wing at this same angle of attack. Since we are on a downline, and airspeed has increased on the way down, the plane is, more than likely, flying at that time (a little), and there will be some displacement (briefly) from the down line path. I'm sure you three have this angle of attack and displacement as small as possible. I apreciate your time responding. Let's not waste any more time on this.. let's go fly! sc

RE: Snap Rolls - P09
Jason, as long as you are giving inputs here.. it's my 'belief' that a true 1-1/4 snap will have the fuselage still yawed when the snap is complete and down elevator will be needed to get back on line. I think some pilots are doing a 1 snap, and a 1/4 roll based on what I have seen. Any 1-1/4 snap, in my opinion, that comes out heading straight down is not a 1-1/4 snap. Your thoughts? sc

RE: Snap Rolls - P09
I use 2 conditions, 1 for each snap. Providing throws would not do much good as it will depend on plane 'moments' and where the CG is located, as well as how each pilot likes the see the snaps. sc

Welcome back Tom... we need to get together before the D7 Champs and do some serious flying. I want another final result like the last time we flew together at the D7 in Fresno! (we'll just be in a different Class). Keep us informed - but I'm sure we'll talk before it gets into writing. sc

RE: More B400 questions, "skipping at startup"
The exact symptom happened to me yesterday - one time, with a brand new battery. I immediately stopped - was not going anywhere anyway, and checked the charge on the battery. It was a bit low, 12.4V, but should have still run. I charged anyway. Plugged it back in, and it worked fine. I have not flown with that battery for several flights, no issues. I belive that when I plugged in this battery, I did not push the battery connectors together very well - this one is harder to plug in than my other batteries. I think the connectors were barely making contact - just the tips were making contact - and almost arcing as the motor pulsed. I am 90% sure this is what happened to me. sc

RE: Positive wing incidence
Here are my observations - First, are you referencing wing incidence to the engine thrust line? Is the thrust line referenced to the 0/0 center of the fuselage? Wing incidence will raise or lower the stab flying position. For a given airspeed the wing angle of attack will be the same - change the incidence and the wing will seek the same angle of attack again for that airspeed. The difference is the stab will be higher or lower (as seen in the air) than before. You will then adjust the stabs to seek a 0/0 with new the elevator position. You can then change the engine thrust a bit to get the plane to fly like you want it. The perception of level flight, upright and inverted, can be changed by wing incidence. If you mix in CG changes, the general theory holds, but less wing incidence may be required to make the plane fly level. sc

RE: Proposed Masters Sequence for 2009/2010
I believe this is incorrect... 8 Eight sided loop from top, INV entry (D) 4 9 Reverse Humpty Bump w/Options from top(1/2 or 1/4 rolls up and down) (T) 3 10 45 degree down with 1-1/2 snap roll (U) 3 11 Stall turn, half rolls, INV entry (T) 2 The 8-sided loop exit's you inverted.. the reverse Humpty exit's you inverted.. the 45 down, 1.5 snap exits you upright, so #11, the stall turn, is not an inverted entry. sc

RE: Weight Requirements
I am of the belief that there can be 'too light' and this would show itself in windy conditions. I believe, and this may be my own preference, that a light, say 10lb airframe will not fly as well as an 11.5lb airframe in the wind - and by this I mean wind gusts will affect the 10lb plane more than the 11.5lb plane. Way back when.. (about 10 years ago) there was too light, and this was easy to tell as the airframe was not ridged - there was to much flex in it, between the wings and the stab. Now, with newer technology, I think this flex is gone (yet we see Beryll's being stiffened to prevent twist), but I could see how it might be a problem if you were trying to build a 8lb plane, 2M plane, just as an example. I suppose the leads to, if we raised the weight limit to 13lb, does the plane have an advantage over an 11lb plane in the wind? Perhaps it is in the thumbs? sc

RE: Weight Requirements
Hey Chad, There are some top flyers, by this I mean perhaps in the top 20 in the US, which advocate speed and believe electric can not produce the speed needed in the wind. I'm not going to pick a side on this, but I like my electric speed. I think it's find for all but 5% of any conditions. I think electric has gone through / is going through a transition period of sorts, as many flew very slow and found the wind to be an issue. There is 'too slow' and I think we approached this limit. As new props and motors were developed, I think this is less of an issue now. You state, "in fact most guys were flying setups that are slower than today" which sort of goes to the above point that maybe we were getting too slow ? If most were slower than today, these pilots are flying faster for some reason (today).. they have learned that there may be too slow. Good Luck at this year's Worlds. sc

RE: Weight Requirements
Poetic would have a problem meeting the 11lb limit. This was a great entry level 2M pattern plane... for electrics so more pattern pilots can make weight with less expensive planes and electrics can fly fast enough in 90% of any pattern competition, if set up properly. sc
