RE: New web site
John, from over here in the colonies, most British sites run a bit slow. I was on about midnight when I was reviewing Taylor's site. The worst time for everything seems to be when all the kids get out of school in the afternoon. Anyway, Andy, you've made a lot of us wish we had a website like you about our boats.[:(] Keep up the good work.

RE: Fortune 612 advice
Deep, it sounds like something may not be rigged right. The last thing you want to be doing is cutting chunks off your sails![X(] Can you post some pictures of your problem. If your boat is suddenly swapping ends, I'm wondering what sort of winds, etc you are trying to sail in? After reading your post again, I'm thinking you just need to go out with an experienced skipper and let him check your rigging. If you've got stuff snagging and hanging here and there, you've got some rigging screwed up somewhere. The boat will never sail right till things get straightened out and routed right. The good news is it's probably something very simple. Sort it out and you'll be in the groove and on your way to a great time. Glad to have you sailing with the rest of us, by the way. [:)]

RE: New web site
Taylor, I think your site is excellent. And I didn't notice any "slow speed." It flew thru my system. How fast web pages load depend on a lot of variables in individual systems, including even the time of day. Your site is a bit "involved" but only because you've got a LOT of stuff on it. Hard to have lots of material without making things a bit "involved." I think you done good, my friend. Good site. I wish I had a fourth the boats you do. [:)] jim

Andy, I'm mighty impressed with your website. You're off to a good start with it and everything is working fine it seems. I have to upkeep the one for our company and know it can get crazy. I really like the GREEN you are using on your boats. Not many green boats around for some reason but the ones that are look sharp. What color is that, if you don't mind giving away secrets. Jim

RE: Hull designs
Jan, since you are contemplating a hull design change, I'm wondering if it would be both easier and possibly more effective if instead you extended/modified the keel for a bit more depth? And possibly even make a slightly heavier keel bulb. In many parts of the US we have to be careful about keel depth due to our weed problems and shallow lakes. However, I have it in my head that you really do not much suffer from either condition. Just a suggestion. jim

RE: Northwind 36
Mr. Wolf, thanks for the photo story of your build. I think it's really helpful to all when a member takes time to do this for whatever boat. When you epoxied the hull around the keel insert, did you mix your epoxy INSIDE the boat? The picture looks like you are injecting the A and B resin separately in the hull and of course mixing later. Correct?? Nothing wrong with this I guess. I just never thought of doing it this way. Keep the pic's coming!!! jim

RE: best sailboat for a beginner
Andy, I think you said about all that needs be said on the subject. I would only add that some beginners may think smaller boats are easier to sail and learn on, etc. This isn't true at all, in my opinion. And of course there are other good options, but Andy would be here half the day if he evaluated ALL the possibilities. Besides, it's fun to study and dream on your own. [:)]

RE: Yankee III Jboat help
Barely, if you are indeed talking about the big "J" class boat, yes.......they sail good on very little wind...which is amazing in such a big boat. Another good light wind boat is the EC-12. You're very wise to be asking about which boats like what before you jump off and start building. How deep and how big is the pond behind your house? And do you have a weed problem in it?

Well, your wife will be getting a beautiful boat. F1 looks mighty sharp with your new decals. By the way, I learned a lesson this week about black boats. NEVER try to paint over black with another color. It will never look right. Now I get to sand a whole boat down.[:@]

Good looking stuff, Ice. You've come a long way fast. Seems just a few days ago you were on here looking for your first boat. Now you're racing around in a beautiful seawind. Your new lake looks like it should always have some kind of wind going and should be no problem with sailboats bothering anyone. Wish I had such a thing near me.

Chas, it doesn't matter how many channels your radio has, so long as you are only utilizing the legal limit for the boat in question.

RE: radio help, please
Chas, the pistol grip radios are really NOT the thing for sailing because of the trigger control. In sailing, the idea is to move the controls as little as possible and as seldom as possible. This is almost impossible to do with the trigger control. Your finger can't very well move it with great precision and then HOLD it exactly there. I'm not saying a guy can't sail a boat with one.......but it would sure be my last choice. Futaba makes a 2 channel radio under $100 WITH a sail servo included. Only thing is be sure to order the little ratchet and screw that goes with it. Costs an extra couple of bucks. But for under 100 you get a radio AND S3801 servo.

RE: New HiTech Servo
It could be a great servo for certain boats, Chas. But you wouldn't want to put it in too small a boat because of the weight and size...just wasted over-kill. I see this servo in nothing smaller than a 1 Meter Boat.

RE: Northwind 36
Fishy, with the dual arm servo you run one line to the boom and one forward to the jib. They work together. Both pull in at same time and both let our at same time. Probably a better set up than the single arm...but with a properly done single arm, I think the advantages of the double are pretty miniscule. The single is a bit more simple to rig IMHO.

RE: New HiTech Servo
Chas, I'm new to the game myself...but one thing I have observed about guys with sail winches is that they have lots of trouble with them. My conclusion is, therefore, AVOID a sail winch if at all possible. With that new monster servo you have, I would think you can do this EASILY. I forget, Chas, which boat is this servo going into? I'm eager to hear more about this servo. It's only drawbacks are it's big and heavy...and probably will use quite a bit of juice. But for the right boat, it should be a dream.

RE: Northwind 36
Fishy, I'm not familiar with the N-wind but I should think you just need to modify your radio box to allow what you want to do. There are a lot of ways to arrange the radios in most any boat. If you haven't already ordered the Futaba S3801, I would suggest the S3802. It isn't quite as strong, but should be strong enough for a Northwind AND it is smaller than the 3801. Some builders throw the kit radio box away and build totally seperate units. You might get some thin plywood at hobby shop and create your own box, or boxes if you choose to split them up. They don't HAVE to all be in the same box, of course. Just pay attention to where you place things for weight and balance...and of course be sure you have freedom of movement for controls.

RE: getting started
Andy, that would be super to get a Nirvana class going. I'm all for the smaller, less expensive boats. I think the creation of some really good boats down in the smaller sizes is really the way to make our sport grow. Not everyone can afford the larger boats or has the room to store them at home or a suitable way to transport them, etc. I can see the Nirvana's and the Victor 32's battling it out......possibly even with Victorias tossed into the mix for some small "Open Class" of boats. That would be great fun to see them fight it out on the waters and I suspect a pretty good match. How's your second Vic coming along? Jim
