RE: Quick question - Lipo charge
This specific battery had been run in the plane until the ESC hit the cutoff. I immediately landed and unplugged it, so I'm imagining it's right around 9.2 or 9.3 volts. I don't have a voltmeter to check it here. I wasn't expecting any problems.

RE: Quick question - Lipo charge
The cells aren't ballooning or anything, but I'd rather err on the side of caution. Considering I'm at work with no glass to charge them on! :)

Quick question - Lipo charge
I have three 3S 2200mah lipos and charging them with a Hobbico AccuCycle Elite. I've charged the batteries a few times with no problems. I just got back from vacation a couple of weeks ago and started charging one of the packs this morning at work to hopefully go fly at lunch. I charge them at 2 Amps. About an hour later I checked it, and the charger said it had already pushed in 2175 mah into the pack and it still wasn't done. Isn't that way too much? I thought lipos retained a good portion of their charge to prevent over-discharging them, so it shouldn't be charging anywhere near their full capacity. Am I way off base?

RE: Weird LiPo problem
Thanks for your help Druss. Maidened the Typhoon yesterday. The balance was very off requiring a landing and an adjustment of the elevator, but after that it flew pretty well. It's strange, it flies perfectly straight and level when I'm just buzzing around, but as soon as I try a loop, it always rolls to one side. Also if I do a roll, it dives at the ground pretty hard. I know that losing altitude is normal during a roll, but this was surprisingly bad. Oh well. I'm sure I'll figure it out. Thanks again.

RE: Weird LiPo problem
Wow, I feel silly. I knew that too. One more question. On the instructions for the ESC, it says that it has already been set for 3S voltage cutoff, with the default being 74%. I'm assuming this means the ESC is set up correctly for my batteries already, since they're 3S packs?

Weird LiPo problem
I'll admit first that I'm totally new to electric RC flight. I've always had nitro planes, but I decided to take the plunge. So I bought a Typhoon 2 PNP, three 3s 2200mah lipos and a Hobbico Accu Cycle Elite charger. I set everything up today, and programmed the charger for the packs following the charger's instruction manual. 11.1v, 3s, .45A charge, .30 discharge, etc. I plugged one of the packs in and started it charging. After 3 hours or so, the charger chimed that it was finished after putting in 976mah. I thought it was weird, so I put another one of the packs on the charger. Around 3 hours later, it stopped with 998mah going in. So is this something with LiPos? Do I have a setting wrong on my charger? I'm not sure why it would be stopping before putting in a whole 2200 or at least close to it. Anyone who can shed some light on this? I don't want to go flying with a brand new plane and a battery less than half charged.

RE: Lipos, chargers, Typhoon 2
Thanks! So if the PNP version comes with a 30A ESC, I should stick with what, a 25c pack? Which would mean these: http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_listCategoriesAndProducts.asp?catname=25C+Discharge&idCategory=240&ParentCat=85 Darn those are expensive. Will the charger I posted in the first post charge these up okay? At this price I'd be better off just getting the RTF, swapping out the TX/RX and getting one extra battery pack.

Lipos, chargers, Typhoon 2
Hello all. I'm looking to make my first foray into electric flying after flying nitros for so long. I need something small to take on vacation with me, and something that will be easy to transport to work with me if I want to go for a lunchtime flying trip. The ParkZone Typhoon 2 seems to fit the bill. I am thinking of getting the PNP version since I already have a charger and radio. I would just need batteries. The problem is, I'm a total newb when it comes to electric flying. I have a Futaba 6EX that I'll use, and I have a Hobbico Accucycle charger found here: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXEYD4&P=ML Will this charger will be fine to charge the types of batteries I'll need? I mean I know the Typhoon 2 takes lipos, but I don't know about the 1s, 2s etc. I heard that a 3s 1800mah lipo is the minimum required. Can I get those relatively cheap at a reputable online retailer somewhere? Should I stick with 1800 or maybe go for 2200 or something? Also, it would be great if someone could point me to a general tutorial on lipos. I know they're dangerous if you charge them incorrectly etc. Thanks for any tips/help/advice. Pete

RE: Small 3D electric without radio
Actually, I just got this a few weeks ago: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXEYD4 Apparently this will work with lipos. If someone could help me figure out what battery I'll need, I would greatly appreciate it. I know next to nothing about batteries, especially lipos. 2s, 3s, 20c, 30c. [&:]

RE: Small 3D electric without radio
Thanks for the responses. I'm more worried because as I've been flying nitros I have no other electronics like batteries and ESCs. Will I be wasting money getting the rtf and just swapping out the radio?

Small 3D electric without radio
I'm looking for a small 3D electric to bring on vacation with me and for the occasional weekend flight at the ball field. I've been in nitros for the past few years, but I'm looking to get into electric. Problem is, I can't spend a ton of money, so I was thinking of getting RTF (was looking at the Typhoon 2) and just throwing my Futaba 6EXAS into it, but I don't know if that will be more expensive in the long run. Anyone give me some tips? Buy the Typhoon 2 (or some other RTF) and throw my radio in it, or should I be look at something else? Thanks.

3D/Floater for a Saito 100
I have a Harrier 90 and I love the way it flies. It's responsive and nimble, but it can float around forever with the engine idle. I'm looking for something kind of like that. Extras/Edges don't exactly float, am I right? I have a spare Saito 100 that needs a home, so if anyone can give me some suggestions to look into, I'd appreciate it.

RE: FLITON EDGE 540 FREESTYLE they did it again
Yeah, I love Saitos. This is a brand new one. I ran it on the ground for a half an hour and leaned it out a little bit. It had kind of a rough idle, but I thought it would be okay if I kept the RPMs up. Guess not.

RE: FLITON EDGE 540 FREESTYLE they did it again
Crashed. My engine wasn't tuned perfectly and I think it was running a bit too rich. I was flying for about 2 minutes before the engine quit, and I was too low to glide it in. Hit a pool house first and fell from there, so the damage isn't horrible, but it's definitely going to need some work. Will post pics when I get them fro the people who took them. First maiden I crashed on. Pretty sucky feeling.

RE: FLITON EDGE 540 FREESTYLE they did it again
Having trouble with the throttle servo on my Saito 100. I have the Saito mounted sideways, and the throttle arm is at the top of the plane. There is no way to get a control arm from the servo to the throttle arm. Can you put the throttle arm on the other side of the entire engine? Otherwise, I'm gonna have to take a scrap piece of ply and glue it on top of the motor mount to put the servo in the right place. Anyone with tips/tricks/pics? Thanks.

RE: Tapes??
It worked perfectly for like a year and a half while I flew it. This stuff is strong. Not to mention it was only a dinky little 400 motor.

RE: Tapes??
On my Easystar (back when I flew it) I used 3M double sided scotch tape for everything. That stuff was incredibly strong. I used it for the fuse halves, to hold the motor in, servos, ESC etc. Strong enough to hold everything together, but you could still take things apart when needed.

It means your servos are about to implode, instantly destroying all matter in the universe. Either that, or the other suggestions here.

Thanks for the replies. I had no idea that gas engines were so much heavier than glow. I suppose I should wait until I get into bigger planes before I go gas.

What gas engine for a 60 size plane
Asked a few people, no one can seem to give me a straight answer. I like the sound and money-savings of gas engines, I just don't know how the sizes correlate to glow. Thanks.

But I'm epoxying metal rods into carbon fiber tubes. I score the metal with a dremel first, but still.

RE: threading pushrod
Ken, when I make carbon fiber pushrods for my planes (I do on all of them) I usually take Sullivan 4-40 rods with threads on both ends, cut about an inch and a half past where it turns smooth, score the metal with a dremel and then epoxy that into the carbon tubes. Then I use Dubro 4-40 Safety Locks. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXWH35&P=7 These homemade connections go on all control surfaces except for rudder and throttle. Are you saying this is a bad idea? Not being flip, honestly curious.

RE: FLITON EDGE 540 FREESTYLE they did it again
Wish I had seen that before I sent in my last Tower order! (Which just happened to arrive today.) You're right. When I put on the landing gear I looked at the instructions like 5 times because I figured there was no way they would have purposely put in that much camber. Thanks for the pics of the fuel tank. I don't know if I have any Dubro tanks big enough, but I'll look around. I don't want to cut into the formers or anything, but it looks like I might have to.

RE: FLITON EDGE 540 FREESTYLE they did it again
How about the fuel tank? There is no obvious place for it. I looked through the old posts and it looks like people are just securing it to the tray or putting it inside the engine box. Any advice where it should go? I also have a mini servo to use for throttle, but it looks like the fuel tank will interfere with the control rod. Still trying to figure that one out.
