RE: ParkZone Slo-V Review
Well, you have found one of the problems with the stock Slo-V. Under powered!!! To answer your questions... Can a larger size battery pack, ie 7.2 volt 900 mah be used on the Slo V? - Yes. The stock motor will run fine with 900mah batteries. The 900mah is the capacity rating or how much current can be delivered. This equates to how long you can fly. Larger capacity = longer flights. Can my charger for the above battery be used to charge the smaller Slo V 7.2 or 8.4 volt batteries. - I wouldn't recommend this. You could overcharge the battery and damage it. It can overheat and the battery life will be reduced. 8.4 Volt pack never even warm up and I only get about 6 minutes of fly time. - 6 minutes isn't too bad for the stock battery. The batteries will get warmer if more current is being pulled from them. Things to consider when changing to LiPos... - You WILL need to use a LiPo charger. DO NOT USE THE CHARGER THAT CAME WITH THE SLO-V - LiPo's can be very dangerous if not charged or handled properly. - The motor that comes with the Slo-V is rated for 7.2 volts. A 3 cell LiPo will burn the motor up after three flights. You will need to change the motor. Use the motor from the Blade CP Pro. Same cost... Same size... Rated for 11.1 Volts. - Huge difference in flight characteristics with LiPos... Once you try them.. you wont go back. Other things to try... - Try removing the wheels. The wheels cause a huge amount of drag. Using the original batteries will be better with no wheels. - Try different prop sizes for best performance. - If you have lots of $$$$ - change the plane like I did (see above post) -Pilot

RE: GWS beaver crabs
First, they do make ointments for them beaver crab critters!!! Okay, joke done!!! *laugh* *laugh* *laugh* I feel better now! [:D][:D][:D] I'm assuming that the plane flew correctly before right? The only things I can recommend checking would be: 1. Wing and vert stab straight. (you did that) 2. Wing isn't twisted. (you did that) 3. Motor not mounted on any angle. (normally these types of planes put some down force in the motor mount, but not side to side). 4. Did you make sure the wing struts aren't causing drag? 5. Did you make sure the wheel struts and wheels aren't causing drag? If you check most everything, drag on one side over the other or balance may be off. Check the roll balance from nose to tail. Make sure you don't have one side heavier than the other. Good luck -Pilot

oregon9guy, Others here may have other/better suggestions but this is how mine is set up... 2410-12Y Outrunner Brushless Electric Motor $12.00 15A ESC Brushless Motor Electronic Speed Control $20.00 (2) SERVO - Tower Pro SG90 9 gram Mini Servo $14.00 ($7.00 each) 1300magh 3 cell Lipo Battery $20.00 Total $66.00 adder to the cost of the plane (not including radio) These are estimated prices. You might get better pricing. You will have to use a different radio and servos because the stock radio doesn't support brushless ESCs and the servos are not standard. Also, keep in mind that the Slo-V being a "V" tail will have to have the rudder and elevator mixed. I have a programmable radio which does this automatically. If your radio doesn't mix, then you will either need to buy a "V" tail mixer or do like djnsayne recommends and go with the stick. It's a conventional tail and flies much like the V. I bought all my parts (except the battery) off a guy on e-bay... link below: http://stores.ebay.com/Heads-Up-RC_W0QQssPageNameZstrkQ3amefsQ3amesstQQtZkm -Pilot

RE: ParkZone Slo-V Review
hey hawk3ye, This bird takes a lick'n and keeps on tick'n. At high speeds, the wings does shake quite a bit, but they have never folded on me. I'm still using the original set of wings (2 years old). I've gone through two sets of tail feathers though. I also fly with no wheels. The wheels cause a huge amount of drag. I normally don't fly fast, it's nice to know that I can though!!! It takes off and climbs at 1/2 throttle. At 1/2 throttle, it still climbs 3 times faster than the stock config (if the stock config climbs at all [;)]) With my setup I have done many OUTSIDE loops (climb to about 300 feet... Nose down hard and balls-out full throttle). Doing this really causes the wing to stress. I've tried, but failed, many times to fold the wings and they won't. It’s pretty funny to watch. I actually run brushless now with a 1300mah Lipo. It's a really rugged bird.

aeajr, Do you have any experience with Mountainmodels? They have a few airplanes that are just what I've been looking for. The new Tyro 150 looks great. I've been looking for a nearly indestructible - non foam - electric 4 channel to fart around with. The smoothE also looks good. The video shows some pretty bad crashes and the thing just kept on flying with no obvious damage. -Pilot

RE: ParkZone Slo-V Review
Hey churchill, I went back through my posts and I still don't see that I wrote anything that would have put off any "Newbe" to the sport or disrespected anyone. However, as you are a real pilot, you know that if you fly a plane close to stall speed, the CG IS critical (like djnsayne said). But my opinion as stated many times, this critical CG is due to the stock configuration being GROSSLY under powered. You can adjust the CG until you are blue in the face and it still will not fly well. You may get a few stable flights, but you are always flying in a buffet. A small breeze in the wrong direction will stall the wing(s) and down you go!! Everyone here has recommended to go to the 7 cell battery or as I recommend, change the motor and switch to a 3 cell Lipo and you will be amazed at the way this bird flys. -Pilot

RE: Super Cub went Kaput!!! help plse
smickers, There are several things that can cause this... 1. You may have damaged the motor (i.e. bent shaft or small short) causing excesive current. The ESC will shut down when too much current is flowing out of it. 2. This can also be cause by batteries being low. If the voltage drops below a certian level, the ESC will also shut off. 3. It might also be a bad ESC. First recharge your batteries and test again. Crashes, even small ones, can cause expensive problems. -Pilot
When you saw that poo fly it must have landed on you because your attitude is really sh**ty. If you don't understand the importance of a proper cg then YOU should not advise ANYONE on how to properly configure their plane. Why do you think that they distribute luggage very carefully on full-sized planes? An improper CofG can do some pretty wild things!
First, why are you taking this to a personal level? I never attacked anyone here. Your personal attack was uncalled for. I stated an opinion based on my experiences with this plane. Second, as for my understanding of CG and qualifications to give advice, you need to read my off topic post to churchill a few back. I am fully aware of the concepts of aircraft behavior and flight characteristics. I would be bolden to say that I know more than you. If the FAA feels that after a year in training and several written and in flight tests that I'm qualified, then, I'm qualified. So, please grow up and act like an adult and keep this civil. -Pilot

RE: ParkZone Slo-V Review
Everyone has been saying here that the stock configuration is fine, yet they all say that "it could be better if..." or "It's fine, BUT....". I read this as saying that the stock config is NOT fine. If it's fine, then why change it? Because, by changing it, you can make it fly better. If it flew good stock, then you wouldn't have to change it. I think that it doesn't fly very well stock, hence my original statment stands: In my opinion, the stock configuration blows!!! It flys like dog poo with wings. And let me tell you, I've seen dog poo fly, and it doesn't fly very well!!! -Pilot
Pilot I beg to differ. The slo-v can fly well iin no winds in it's stock config. getting the CofG right is crucial. I wouldn't want to scare a newcomer away with all of the hop up talk
It's funny that you say this when almost every post here says to change the prop/motor/battery etc... I guess we're all entitled to our opinions and its my opinion that trying to fly the Slo-V in its stock configuration is like flying dog doo with wings!!! Why should the CG be so important? If it were powered correctly, the CG wouldn't be so critical. Don't get me wrong, I like this plane for quiet afternoons in the park, but only if it's been modified to fly like a plane and not dog doo. -Pilot
I'm glad I'm not the only one who had some problems with the Sol-V. I launched mine climed to about 10 feet took a hark right and broke the tail. I have a replacement tal now and will be tryiug it again tomorrow. Any pointers?
churchill, I will give you fair warning on the Slo-V in it's stock configuration. Basically, it wont fly too well. It is so under powered that it will do what you have described every time. Until I drastically modified mine, I was almost ready to chuck it in the trash. I suggest to replace the motor with the motor from the Blade CP pro. This will cost about $10.00. You will have to replace the pinion though. A pinion puller is about $14.00. Then buy a 3 cell lipo (can be had for about $20.). This combination will give the plane plenty of power to fly any way you like. The plane will a pleasure to fly. I eventually put a brushless motor on mine with a 3 cell lipo and I can fly to 400 feet with a small camera on board. It can do inside and outside loops and fly so fast, the wings flutter. The stock configuration is crap!!! -Pilot PS... thanks for the info on the regs!!!

RE: Batch Airfoil Coords Input in AutoCAD?
If you've done it in ACad Lt, it will work in all newer versions. Acad Lt doesn't support Lisp, so, I'm curious what command you used?? Maybe knowing the command you used will help. There are methods of importing data but to have Acad automatically plot it usually requires a LISP or "C" add-on tool to do so. And, like I said, ACad Lt doesnt support those tools. -Pilot
Anybody know how many watts the stock motor will handle? I have changed out the radio gear and now am going Lipo. I have a 3 cell and my meter shows it at 100 watts wide open but the motor gets pretty hot. It may not be too bad in the air but I'd rather not burn it up if 100 is too much. Next step, brushless. Maybe a Himaxx 2808-0980, anybody used it?
The stock motor is only a 7.2 volt motor. It totally can't handle a 3 cell lipo. Change the motor to the same motor used on the Blade CP pro (about $9.00). It's exactly the same size and RPM, but is rated for 11.1 volts. You need to change the pinion though. -Pilot

The way I see it, and I'm no lawyer, if a plan is available from the originator on the net, this qualifies as "public domain". Laser cutting - Questions...
I've been reading that many of you are laser cutting your designs from CAD. Q1 - How much does it cost (typically)? Q2 - Do they do single runs, or must they cut a minimum quantity? Q3 - Would an AutoCad file work or must it be in some other format? Q4 - Do they typically charge a setup fee - and how much? Q5 - How many licks does it take to get to the chewy center of a Tootsie-Pop? TIA!!! -Pilot

RE: What's a good simple onboard video camera?
I picked up on that camera about a month ago. It's awesome!!! I put it on my Slo-V and it takes great shots. Keep in mind though... The rechargeable battery is NOT replaceable. There's absolutely NO manual with it that explains how to use it. Here are a few tips... To turn it ON/OFF press the PHOTO button for three seconds. You MUST charge it for 6 hours before using it for the first time. You MUST turn off the main power switch (small switch on the side) when not using it or the battery will go completely dead. It works very bad in low light. This is a "Daytime Only" camera. It doesn’t do 640x480... It's only 320X200 @15fps. It records audio (can be used for other things). It takes stills (don't expect much - remember it's $35.00) Have fun -Pilot

I often wondered about the legal implications to this. I reverse engineered my last project and posted the progress photos here a few months back. The plane was from a Pilot Quick Built series that I painstakingly measured and converted to an AutoCad 3D model. Then I built it. I thought about posting the plans for all to enjoy, but I didn't because of possible copyright infringements. The company is no longer in business but I didn't want to rock that boat. What are the legalities to that anyway? Are there any lawyers out there? -Pilot

RE: HELP brushless setup on p47
divergoff, I'm not sure how the motor will work in the P47, but I've used that motor on a custom built plane which is about the same size as the E-Flite Ultra Stick ARF and it works real well. The motor might be a little too much for that plane IMHO. If you go that way, I would experiment with smaller props. Also, I have that same Celecrta LiPo charger that is shown. It works real well, but many have strongly recommended using a "balanced" charger. The Celecrta charger shown is NOT a "balanced" charger. A "balanced" charger will charge each of the Lipo cells individually and compensate for weaker cells in the battery. The charger shown charges all the cells equally and may cause premature battery failure. -Pilot
