RE: Scratch building 105
ORIGINAL: Slow Low Hey Sammy - I've been meaning to ask how the fuselage was formed as a hollow shell from sheet foam.
Hey James, Not too difficult to do but you will been to modify ur templates with inner cutouts first. From what I remember, initially I marked wall thickness I needed on the inside of the templates, then cut out the center sections from them, this way they were like doughnut with hole in between. After the holes were cut, templates were re-nailed on the sub sections of the fuselage and then a long rod with ball end was heated up and passed through those section in from one end and out the other!. This formed a long hole preferably in the center of the sub section. Then one end of the hotwire bow was untied from it's arm and fished through this long hole in the fuse sub section. After that it's end was retied to the arm and heat was turned on the bow to desired voltage and bow was used to move the wire to inner edge of the template and it started cutting the foam from the middle. We went in circle from starting point to the finish point, which was the starting point in clock wise or anti-clock direction hollowing out the fuselage sub sections. After all 3 sub-sections were hollowed by same process, they were joined together. In the end is was like how actual aircraft is built, first in sub modular sections, then joined to sub sections and then all subs are joined to make whole fuselages.

Another milestone achieved by making both elevators fully functional!!!. A servos tray was made with 1/8" ply with 2 stands on both sides. This was placed inside the fuselage and the 2 servos are installed. On center rudder is Hitec HS 645MG and on elevators is Savox SC 251MG These elevators are first of all flight control surfaces on this model to become power controlled with there Savox SC 251MG servo and custom made carbon push rod ..... These will be mounted inside the fuselage upside down right above where wing mounting screws are on wing saddle. I have chosen this location in order to maintain CG of the aircraft. Presently she is very nose heavy and these servos at this location will help our in balancing act later on. Also considering to place large Robart retract airtank between these servos under the servo tray.

RE: Scratch building 105
Here is a short video of Lufthansa who is presently restoring a Lockheed L1649 "Starliner" dubbed as "Super Star" by Lufthansa back to a flying machine. http://www.3sat.de/mediathek/?displa...play&obj=32329 They bought 3 Starliners in bankrupt auction in 2008 from Morrise Rodney in Aubern Main. Out of 3, this aircraft has bee selected and has been stripped down to bare bones before full ground up restoration started on it, including fabrication of main structural parts that needed to be replaced. Lufthansa is restoring this Starliner back to flying condition so it could be flown to Germany and then she will fly there in German airshow circuit....this will be the only "Starliner" to fly again as only 44 were originally built and these 3 survives to this day.

Thanks guys for your inputs, i see either it's Sierra on higher end or Robart's on middle or reasonable end. I have leads on both types at this time let see which ones i get in the end. G-Pete thanks for posting on this thread, i tried to look for ur P-38's build thread but couldn't find it, can you pls link it here so i can go through it. Thanks

Now it's looking right.....Its all dry fitted at this time, all reinforcement pieces are made for it. Once all these pieces are epoxied in place, i will then double reinforce whole gear bays with carbon fibre cloth to give it ultimate robustness....

RE: Scratch building 105
OK folks back on the build, this time i'm working on the landing gears bays in both inboard nacelles, fixed the gaps between spines and then outer skins and now aligning the rails by adding shims for perfectly right angles. I didn't liked the way mains are mounted as then are too much forward tilted, this will also add huge amount of vertical load and stress on locks of the retracts on ground and at the time of touch downs on landings. Don't want any failures on this bird....

RE: Robart Landing gears Vs other ones for Ziroli P38
How are Sierra gears Vs both CJM and Robarts.... I didn't like the wall thickness's of the main mounting brackets on Robats, kinda looks on very thin side and weak on main landing gears. Plus whole assembly didn't give me good solid feeling about them.....

Robart Landing gears Vs other ones for Ziroli P38
I like to ask guy who are currently building Ziroli P38s or have and are flying them what is your landing gear brand preferences. Do you guys like Robarts landing gear offering or any other better brand over Robo landing gears. In coming months, i might want to looking into this aspect so thought i'd ask around. Pros and Cons of Robart Landing gears over other brand available like Century jet models.

RE: Scratch building 105
Started out by wet sanding the 3 cowls, each took 2-3hrs roughly but i made first one different then other 2, difference is, 1st one give you a feel of factory's off the line brand spanking new aircraft and other 2 are sort worked up weathered type texture to them. I left 4th one just by cleaning the flash n making exhaust port cut outs nicer. This way they can see what's involved in making these cowls. Cowls took most of the time, then sprayed dark green on the sheet of vinyl alphabets for the fuselage titles as "Pakistan International" Since i couldn't go out to buy flat black vinyl sheet to make the pax windows, i sprayed white stick on monocote sheet with flat black but first i scuffed it with 400 paper and took it's sheen off, this helped in pain sticking better to the sheet. Windows will be done tonite and may get applied on the model also. I didn't liked the way dark green stripe got painted and did a test to see if masking tape will pull the green off the white, n yes it did, so sprayed whole strips and both outer fins with clear coat paint, i sprayed few coats on each, this sealed the green on the white and gave is beautiful even glossy surface and even out the color properly...I did this as tomorrow i will mask the stripe to paint the belly, stabilizer and stab/fuselage fairings metallic aluminium as wing was done. One rudder is painted green and it;s functional trim tab. Also made Pakistani flag as decal since masking tape pulled the edge off the painted one, if anyone wants to know how i did, juss ask, its process n half itself.... Made 60's style of PIA insignia decals for both outer fins from white stick on sheet, stars are next to do, each fin has 7 stars over PIA logo and 10 under it plus a line goes across the PIA with half airplane painted at one end..... I'm taking bit of break now as i can't sleep and have to get this airplane as much done as possible tonite Attached Images

Primed and partially painted the inner wing today, i was in bit of rush to get this a part done, so didn't bothered to fully sand the surface on this wing section but for this purpose i'm sure it will do the job.

Connie got Glazing chicken pox.....lol Outer Nacelle's compartments have been filled in as i see more risk in placing batteries in them due to vertical shock upon landings! Not to say that all landings are text book perfect but why take risk that could break the wing due to so much weight on outboard nacelles.

All 3 fins will be white also, then i will spray green on both outer fins. I will also make fuselage cheat lines around the same time.

RE: Scratch building 105
Spent last 6 hrs primering the fuselage and the inner wing, then sanding it dry first followed by wet sanding it with 400 wet/dry paper. It's good to see all the hidden imperfections with good single coat of gray primer, it took all this time to hand sand many spots on the tailplane area and then on the wing where nacelles join in with the wing. This is very time consuming and tedious step but a lot has been done, more to sand and then filling will start with auto glazing putty.
