RE: Great planes ultimate 160
ORIGINAL: iflywhenican This "slop" that you are referring to is usually an unwanted feature on most planes that have a wing joiner setup. That is why I use gorilla Glue on all wings that are joined in this manner. The glue expands to fill those voids. I have been flying my Ultimate since this thread began, in fact, I flew it this past Monday afternoon...a MOST enjoyable and fun plane to fly. Of course, my choice of glue type is just my preference only.
did you do any mod to the joining? or did you do as the manual instructed using Gorilla glue?

RE: TOWER HOBBIES SUCKS
Hear that? Thats me knocking on wood......... never had any issues here either. Always great CS and great shipping. There just is no pleasing some................ Any company will have an issue from time to time, but if you do not give them the chance to correct it, I do not think starting a bash thread is going to be fruitful in any way to the issue.

RE: Omega 15% non 4 cycle blend
Omega 15% ever since the other brand let me down and caused a Saito 1.80 to rust the bearings, flaked and took out the cam gear. Have not had any issues since, and been running it in 2str, and 4str engines for the last 8 years now. I prefer the synthetic/castor blend., Rather than the all synthetic of Cool Power.

I must say you have intrigued me, as I do still like GP as a product. I also have always liked the Sportsters. I will definitely keep this one in mind, while I make sure there isnt a viable option of a kit or plans to scratch from.

Cant decide
I have a OS 1.60 FX, and would like to build a plane for it, from either a kit or plans. Any suggestions? Would like to keep to aerobatic, or even slightly aerobatic. I have looked at a couple of the Ultra Hots / Super Hots plans from MAN, but not sure if thats what I want, as I think those are profile planes? Any help aprpeciated.

RE: Spektrum not working after bind
ORIGINAL: davidorn My Spektrum 6i stop working for some reason. It's not responding to any of my recievers. I just used it last week, could it be the humidity getting to the electronics? I have a shop behind the house, but I can't think of weather affecting an enclosed electronics. Any way you guys know of to test out my spektrum or diagnose it? Any advice would help.
EDIT: I see you may have it figured out now? Missed that, sorry. Experienced this with a DX5e, sent it in, HH sent back a new one free of charge, but never said what was wrong. Again, ignore all the fanboys....... all of the major brands have their own issues, and are certainly not immune to them. All the brands work in much the same way, and none is better than the other. Have you ever ran the battery dead while it was in a programming screen? or maybe disconnected the battery while it was turned on? This could have corrupted the programming, which would require to be sent in for a reset.

RE: Who else has failed on their first build?
In all my years in the hobby, I have had a couple models not come out like I thought. One reason or another, and after several attempts to correct the issue, just had to make em a hangar queen. Its part of the hobby, and I enjoy trying to figure out issues that arise. If it makes a person give up that easy, this hobby is truly not going to fulfill your wants or needs. If a person cannot fully accept that when they go out to fly, they may come back with a re-kitted plane, then that too is an indication this is not a hobby for you. We had one such member in the club a few years back, he built a Pete n Poke, and even after several us asked if he balanced it, he never truly gave an answer, we also recommended he redo a couple of linkages. Never the less, he took it up for its maiden, where it continued to to a loop right after take off, planting the new motor into the dirt. He threw his Tx in a tantrum... left and never saw him again. Gotta take each part of the hobby as a fun learning experience, to learn and grow.

RE: How to rejuvenate a long stored OS 1.08 ?
ORIGINAL: spinner I have an old O.S. 1.08 that I put up 15 years ago and now want to use it again. I can't turn the engine over nor rotate the throttle barrel (haven't tried very hard for fear of damaging). The engine was run dry and treated with WD-40 before storing but obviously there has been some gellation of this over the years. What is the best method to free up the bearings ect? I have heard about soaking the engine case and carb (minus any O-rings) in automatic transmission fluid. Thoughts on that method? Any help is appreciated. Thanks[8|]
I have a container I use with a product sold at automotive stores called Seafoam. It is a fuel/oil treatment, but has some amazing cleaning properties and will not harm your O-rings. I have soaked a few engines in it over the years when they got gummed up. For treatment to store, get Marvell air tool oil. Keeps the rust from happening. WD-40 will not protect against rust.

RE: What happens if arf and kit building prices meet?
I my self have wondered and pondered this same question..... and my guess is the industry will continue to change and evolve to meet the customer demads. As far as a foamy, I own one, from Twisted Hobbies, but it is nothing like a stick built plane to fly. The foam flexes way too much, and very limited on what kind of a day you can actually fly it and enjoy it. There are still many ARF's out there that are priced as a bargain IMO, as compared to building it yourself. However, I would still rather build myself, and I can only hope the change and evolution of the hobby, brings us back to that eventually.

But she doesn't like it when I'm on RCU for and hour or two straight. Thats when she gets furious.
As a parent, I can relate to this as well. I get all uptight if my kids are talking to strangers. And we are all strangers to you. RE: LETS SAVE SIG BEFORE THEY GET SWALLOWED BY THE BIG TWO!!!
Does Hazel not still live there? That was her airstrip, or at least as I thought, maybe she sold it off during one of the change of hands with SIG. It still amazes me SIG started out as a basement hobby cutting kits, soon to be an overwhelming task as popularity swept in. I am glad to see SIG coming back, and hope they are serious about wanting to stay.
ORIGINAL: wb5ziy Had the pleasure to attend the Sig event in Montezuma IA last month, what a great event. Got to meet and talk to one of the new owners, Andrea Martin, who is the daughter of Mr. Kavan. I think that Sig is in good hands, we just need to support them. Also got to meet Hazel Sig, quite a lady!!! The flying was great, the food excellent. If you ever get a chance to attend be sure to do it. The flying site was the Sig airport and it is great, the runway is better than most fairways, smooth and flat. Jack
I was there when they demo'd the Sundancer...... I sure wish they still sold that one. Seems it went off the market almost as fast as it went on. When they domo'd it, it was known as Harolds Monster Bipe. I too have been a long time customer of SIG, and still am to this day. I have the 1/4 spacewalker with saito 1.50, covered in coverite and dope. a 4 star 60 with magnum 91fs... a recently rekitted Extra 300xs, Wonder (was an award at one of their fly-ins several years ago) recent purchase was the SIG Mini-boss as I had the Boss, and liked the field boxes durability and useability.
ORIGINAL: scale only 4 me
ORIGINAL: mkranitz
ORIGINAL: scale only 4 me Come on Mike, to say you're not trying to promote your Mag with these threads you start is at best disingenuous,, at worse, thinking we're all stupid. There is a policy, you probably wrote, for product announcements.. why not just use that method instead of trying to be slick and ''accidentally'' promo the mag. Personally it turns me off to your product, as well as the spam Tower sends me.
I am trying to bring content to the fore beyond the garbage you read in MAN and FlyRC. We have SUBSTANTIVE information to provide to hobbyists. But I'll tell you what; I'm about $200,000 in the hole funding the creation of this new medium and it's whiners like you that will cause me to shut it down. No other magazine does what we do and no other magazine can touch us in terms of content and reader ratings. I have tried to elevate the quality of what people read and let ordinary ''heroes'' of our hobby have their day in a dynamic and engaging platform. But I'm fed up with the BS in this hobby. Guys whine about everything. Maybe you can share what you've created to revolutionize the hobby?? I'm guessing you haven't even seen an issue of our magazine.
Wrong Mike, I downloaded the free intro you offered a while back, and I wasn't impressed enough to spend $$ on it, just not my thing Whining? I'm just calling a spade a spade. Maybe you can just be honest when you're promoting the product, That's all I'm saying. I don't think reacting to Honest criticism with name calling is going to help you a bit.
\ I was fairly impressed with the magazine, but the price point is a bit high. For the price I can buy two paper subscriptions, mailed to me. If you'd find a lower price point, I'd be interested.

There really isnt a need for a 40cc engine. Either one uses the available 30cc's or the new 35cc ... or jump on up to the 50cc class. I am amazed at the power output of these 30cc engines today compared to my older motors, and also to my older 2.4 FPE. Just really dont see the need to make such small increments in sizes. What we have is a nice variety. I remember when we didnt have the selection in gassers, unless you wanted a heavy Zenoah.

RE: Word of Warning about Hard Drives
ORIGINAL: HJJFFFAA
ORIGINAL: SyCo_VeNoM at one job I did all I did was destroy data to the point it was un recoverable we had a 10 pass data wipe setup. But this was a stock trading firm so they had tons of sensitive information, and account data that had billions of dollars at stake so its understandable why they had such rigorous data destruction policies. Another guy I knew his way of destroying data was a tad more interesting he'd spin it up, and use a nail gun on it. He also poured thermite on it, and started it up. He was EXTREMELY paranoid ppl would pull his data off, but oddly his passwords were very easy to guess... Personally last few drives I toasted I took the platters out, and used them as mirrors and other things :D I've done drive recovery too real fun getting stuff off a drive that should be blank ;)
What kind of software is used to wipe data 10 times over?
DoD software... some of it available on the net. But even then I can still recover it. We used to do that in labs in college, for computer forensics.

RE: Word of Warning about Hard Drives
All drives from my household only leave after first being introduced to the shop vice, twice. There will never be any recovering of my data. When you say personal data... you probably dont think about those nude pics you took of eachother one drunken night.... or the sex talk you had between eachother....... Info I dont want out there!

RE: Starter for gas engine
ORIGINAL: gade600sdi You guys laughing at the first post saying about spinning too fast and he is right and you are all wrong so he should be laughing. It is too fast for a gas engine, that is why they make gear reductions to slow down the speed.
Gear reduction is for increased torque with less voltage.. has nothing to do with "optimal starting rpm"

RE: Lipo Fire in Garage
ORIGINAL: warbird51
ORIGINAL: PropsnWings those of you using the ammo boxes, where do you find these for sale at ?
Regarding vented versus un-vented boxes, it's my understanding that, without oxygen, the fire will go out. So, I would think that a un-vented stroage box would br preferable. Comments?
I had just saw a picture the other day of a guys garage
ORIGINAL: David Searles Here's a possible solution: Found this at the local Home Depot. I'm thinking of lining it with ceramic blanket material, adding a few dividers, and the lid already has a 1" area to add sand bags. Any suggestions for improvement? David S
Can you post the SKU to this box? for searching purposes.

David S
I like your idea on the toolbox. I would add a vent though by drilling a hole or two. I am sure the lid isnt totaly air tight, but from the information I am reading I am seeing that unvented causes more damage than vented does. I'd like it if you would post pics of the mods you do to this box.

RE: Lipo Fire in Garage
It was not until recently that I had any LiPos around. I have recently gotten into some electrics and of course the batteries are LiPo. So I have been learing all I can, as I had already known they were a dangerous breed if not respected. So has A123's been used for electrics? I am surprised they havent if not.

RE: Lipo Fire in Garage
ORIGINAL: David Searles OK, I'm officially concerned! So, can we now steer this thread more towards solutions. I can honestly say that I never charge my batteries unattended, but, I do & have left them installed in the jet while charging. My big concern now is the storage risk. Below is a photo of what my trailer typically looks like: six to eight jets, all containing three or more lipos! Even if I make the effort to remove all of the batteries, where the hell do you safely store 24 lipo batteries?! Put them all in one box or cabinet & it seems to me you've just created a battery bomb, ie one goes off & it triggers the other 23! I really would rather not have a battery go off and destroy every jet in my trailer, so it seems the storage solution needs to be external, and somehow compartmentalized so that one bad cell can't set the whole thing off. Suggestions? David S
I have been thinking some on this same issue, with the compartment type storage. I currently have a fire safe I keep my LiPos all in, and have thought too, that I have a battery bomb in essence. I am seriously thinking of fabricating a metal box that can keep the batteries all seperated with metal dividers...... but then came the thought of how heavy this box would be , even empty.

RE: Are all RC forum's activity in decline?
And yet it went off topic, as none of those issues can be handled by the site owner in any way. Thin skinned people, need to learn how to ignore the search police and their friends... they are everywhere on the internet. I certainly do not feel we need "babysat" by mods for those issues. [;)]
