RE: Dirty Birdy Build Thread
Hello, Jeff I have been looking for a good looking paint scheme for my DB. This is very similair to what I had in mind. The bottom will have about 3 stpis on each side of the wing. This strips will be white on red. The Horizontal stab will have 2 strips of white on red. These strips will be centered on each side of the wing and stab. I have a 40 size "Chaos" that is done this way on the bottom. The only diffrence is that the bottom is done in white with metalic blue for strips. I hope that you don't mind if I use your scheme. It will be easyer on my brain. Thanks. Ben

RE: Dirty Birdy Build Thread
Hey, Jeff I see that you are in the process of installing the horizantal stabiliser. The cut -outs for the stab are not cut out on the sides of the tail end of the fuselage. How are you going to tackle this portion of the stabilizer placement. I have an idea as to how to do this but I also like to see and hear how you tackle this part of putting this DB together. Photos would help. I'm stuck on this part of the building of my DB or rather I don't want to screw it up at this point. I need all the help I can get. Ben Cubillos

RE: HET F-18 Advise
Hi, Carl I hope that you can help me on this one. I have an F18 twin 6904 and Tsunami 72 amp esc's. The problem is, will I loose performance if I place the esc's behind the fan/motor units so they can keep cool. The esc's are pretty big. What if I place the esc's outside of the thrust tubes. Will they get hot and not function after a while. Can you give me recomendations on how to and where I can places the esc's without damaging them. Any help you can give me ( or anyone ) will be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Ben Cubillos

RE: HET F-18 Twin 70mm EDF
Hi, Greg I saw where you placed the electronic speed contols, up front where the front landing gear is. You said that you were going to make provisions to cool the ESC's. Did it work out for you ? The problem that I have is if I mount the ESC's behind the motor/fan units, will the esc's reduce the effectiveness of the fan units ? What if I just mount them outside of the fan tubes. Will they get hot and quit on me ? Let me know what you think and also if you can offer some suggestions.I hope to hear from you soon. Ben Cubillos

Hi, Greg I saw your take off attempts on grass. Looks like you could not muster enough speed to take off. Were you going to take off ? I wish you a lot of luck on your next attempt. I'm finally getting back to finish my F 18 jet. My target date is for the next 3 weeks, give or take. I will take a vidio when I fly my F 18 and I will post it. I hope yours has flown already. RE: HET F-18 Twin 70mm EDF
Hello Greg, Looking at your F18 jet set up, it looks like you are placing the lipo batteries in front of the landing gear former ( foward landing gear bulkhead ). I can see the two controlers behind this former. How are you piping cool air to this controlers? Won't the batteries get in the way? Do you have any idea as to what the final weight of this bird is going to be? How heavy are the batteries, each? I have to admit, how you are going to balance this bird? The instructions are not very clear as to how to do it. The final weight of my f18 will be in the 5 to 5 1/4 lbs. I'm anxious to see what the final weight will be. By the way Greg, the temperature was 72 degrees and wind was at 5 to 8 mph on Sunday, today Monday the 26, will be in the high 60's. It will be windy this afternoon. Looking forward to your next posting. Ben Cubillos

Hello Greg, Great to hear from you. I never thought about the weather. The weather out here is in the upper 50's to lower 70's. This week the weather will be in the lower 60's. I don't have anything to fly, but I still go to the flying field and fly someone elses airplane or help other flyers with thier airplanes. I'm not glouting, But it is a way of life in the Southwest, El Paso, Texas. Keep up the good work on your F18 jet. Ben Cubillos

RE: HET F-18 Twin 70mm EDF
Hello Brickyard, You can finish your jet anyway you see fit. Just remember that any additions you do to any bird, it is going to add flying weight. Adding any additional weight is you enemy. In my oppinion the lighter the bird the better it will fly and land. I,m looking forward to hear from Jeff on the final weight of his F18 HET bird. I don't pretend to know everything there is to know about this hobby but the above subject, I am sure of. I always weigh my airplanes to see how close I can get to the stated weght on the plans. Most of the time i'm a few ounces below the stated weight. I have a scale that handles grams, tenths of an ounce, ounces and up to seventeen pounds. Ben Cubillos

Hey Greg, You are right on cost. When I started my HET F18, I new I was ready to spend no more then $ 1000.00 total. I did spend that mush, including the $ 300.00 5sp lipo. Looking foward to flying it within 2 weeks. I'm a slow builder. I'm also waiting to read your review and your first flight of your F18. Merry Chistmas and a Happy New Year to all. Ben Cubillos

RE: HET F-18 Twin 70mm EDF
Hello Greg, Nice To hear from you. If you are moumting your controllers up front, how are they going to be kept cool? I thought the controllers needed air flowing through them to keep them from getting hot. I don't see how you can duct air to the controllers up front without additional work to the front of the fuselage. Like I said, I'm a bigginer at this EDJ hobby, and I will listen to your explanation. I will mount mine right behind the electric motors and run the cables to the front. The external bec along with the servo wires will remain at the back wirh the fans. I will run an extension servo wire ( Front servo/steering ) to the back. The purpose of this is to keep all surface controls / servo wires as short as possible. I'm I wrong on this? As I mentioned before, I'm working part-time at UPS from 3:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.. I'm trying to work a schedule so I can work on my model airplanes. What did I get into.!!!!!!! BEn Cubillos

Dirty Birdie .40, Does anyone have a kit or built Drty Birdie .40 for sale? I'll answear all responses. I haven't see any advertisements for this bird. I have a nice YS .45 that I like to use in it. I had a Kaos .40 from Tower Hobbies but it left a lot to be desired. It would not track strait on stall turns and knife edge was brutal. I'm also building a DB .60. Ben Cubillos

RE: HET F-18 Twin 70mm EDF
Hello Greg, It's nice to be back. My computer crashed last wednesday, November and it has been hell trying to get it fixed. I haven't been working on my F18 jet. I have been down with the flue and it is no fun, especially the running nose. This week my wife has me doing home repair jobs and that is no fun either. Looking at the latest pics on rc universe and your jet, is looking great. Question, where are you placing the reciever, front or back? Doesn't look like there is enough room where the fans are. I'm placing the 5s lipo underneath the canopy. MaxAmps made the 24" cables from the fans the the Lipo upfront. I just can't picture long servo and ESC's extension wires to place the reciever up front. I had to do the same sanding to the fan housing to get them to fit. I wasn't planning on using adjesive to hold the fan units in place. the fit was tight. Maybe I should. I'll keep posting. Ben Cubillos

RE: HET F-18 Twin 70mm EDF
Hello Greg, You are right, it is a BEC. Please understand that I,m new to electric flite and I'm learning as I go along. Some times I come across as a "Maroon ", A Buggs Bunny term. I have learned quit a bit about Lipos, BECs, Fans, motors, wire connections and flying EDJ. Ever sinse I flew the Hobby Lobby F18 jet, I was hooked. I had to have a faster and bigger one. I figure I could spend about $ 1000.00 for a great one. HET gave me that oppotunity. Greg, UPS is willing to hire me if I pass a background check. If and when I get hired, I will probably be the oldest "giszzard" in " preloud ". I'll talk or post later. Ben Cubillos

RE: HET F-18 Twin 70mm EDF
Hello Gregg, In answear to your comment, have I flown my F-18 Jet, the reply is " no ". I tested the fans ( make sure they are turning the right direction ) and found out that I had to use an additional battery to power up the the 2.4 reciever and servos. Since I didn't want to use an additinal battery, extra weight, I shot an e-mail to the guy whom I purchase the jet from. He told me I had to use an external ESC. So I bought one for 23.00 bucks. I recieved it on friday the 21st. I need to splice the ESC to the battery and the reciever and add the vertical fins and balance it. The reason I haven't finished it, is because of the price of kerosene, about 50.00 bucks a 5 gallon container. I guess I'm going to break down and buy it so I can work nights and finish it by this saturday. I have just retired this April of 2008. I have the opportunity to work part-time for UPS as a package loader from 3:00 am to 7:00 am. I have an interview this afternoon at 2:30 pm. I'll keep you posted. Ben Cubillos

RE: HET F-18 Twin 70mm EDF
Hello Greg, I have one of the HET F 18 jets from Turbo Electric Fans in Saratoza, Florida ( William Davis ). I also bought the 6904 fans, 2w-23 motors and the Tsunami 72 amp ESC'. The servos are Hitec HS 85 mg (4) & one HS 82 for the front wheel steering. The battery is a Maxamps 5000HV, 18.5 volts, 5000 mah, the lightest available for these size batteries. Keep in mind that this is Twin Fan Assembly. Assembly is a little difficult because of the wing and stabiliser alignment. It took a little bit of doing in installing the fans to the ducting of the fan intakes. I had to sanpaper the fan ducts at the fan inlet and also the fan units have to be beveled more than a little bit. The fit of the fans was tight and perfect. I had to have a set of long wire assembly ( 26" ) long to reach from the rear of the jet to the cockpit area, fabricated for me by Maxamps. A deans connector, for the battery side to four wires to the fan motors. I did the solder on the motor side terminals. Two positives and two negatives; 4mm size diameter. I will use fiberglass cleaner ( boat, my boat ), clean & buff it. I'll use the clear you mentioned. I don't need a lauching system since we have a beutiful 700 foot runway. This is the Southwest and around this time of year, the weather is fantastic. I'll let you know how it flies. By the way, i'm using a JR 9303 2.4 conversion. This is a 9 channel radio and you need to use a slave for the elevator to function propperly. Ben Cubillos

RE: Dirty Birdy Build Thread
Hello Peter, The kit that I have is from G&S Hobbies and it is a five year old kit. The instructions are vague, out of sequense and at times do not make sense. If you have built fron scratch or kits I'm sure that you can get by. I've looked at other methods of building this bird and it doesn't looked like anyone is following the instruction booklet, that includes me. I have drilled the firewall for Sig composite mounts, upright engine mount, Rossi, 5 port engine and Nelson HP muffler. I'm using a MK 12 oz. fuel tank. I have drilled and installed blind nuts for Robart #607 firewall mount retract. It is slimer than the metal SpringAir type retract. I also drilled a hole for the fuel tank stopper. I feel that it is easier than drilling holes for the fuel lines. So far that is where I'm at. I had to stop because I also have to finish an FA/18 twin ducted fan, Electric, from HET. I will finish the Jet in two weeks and I will continue the DB. I will be using foam core wing and stab from Eureka. Ben

RE: HET F-18 Advise
Hello Carl, Reading your article about the F/A 18 HET jet has me worried about my F/A 18 twin ducted fan jet. I will be using the 6904 ducted fans with the 2w-23 motors and a 5000 mah 5s battery pack. It does not have retracts and I plan on using the tarnac on our flying field to take off and land. I bought this jet about 60 days ago. I'm in the process of epoxing the wings to the fiberglass fuselage. the servos, HS85 mg, have already beign epoxied in place. Am I going to have problems with this set up? I have flown an F/A 18 from Hobby Lobby and I'm using the stock set up. I'm using a 1550 mah 3s battery from MaxAmps and this jet can outrun other Hobby Lobby jets. The only problem i did have is the fan unit came appart. It Lost three bades and I still landed perfectly. Hobby Lobby replaced the fan within 3 days and it flies great. Thier Service is fantascticd. They Also do follow ups via e-mail. When I lost the fan blades I was using the standard battery pack supplied with the jet. 1300 mah 3s Chineese battery, Fly fast Fly low Turn left Regards, Ben Cubillos

RE: Dirty Birdy Build Thread
Hello Jeff ( allthegoodnamesaretaken), I'm also building a DB .60 I purchased from GS Hobbies ( Joe Bridi ) about 5 years ago. I'm going back to kit building, I lost a Yak 54 by Aerworks, i didn't hook up the ailerons leads. My stupidity. I have been looking at your articles on the DB and I like the way you are going about it. I like the photos. I'm in the process of glueing the fuel tank upper block and the bulkheads to the upper fuse slab. I'm sticking to the plans with the exception of using Robart retracs. I woul like to paint it but fuel proof paint is hard to come by. I will use film. I have 3 Rossi .60 engines, one side & 2 rear. I'll be using the side exhuast with a Nelson hipo muffler. In looking at the pics ,you furnished, there are some that are missing. I can't find them any more. The ones I can't find is the one where the fuel tank slab and the fuse top slab are shown, It is a frontal shot. The glue that you are using (TiteBond II blue ), doesnt this glue warp balsa? So far i have been using epoxy for glueing the fuselage sides & joiners. I would like to take pics as I go along. My next project is a Career .60, a copy of the Curare by Mutchlers Hobbies. It has a glass fuse. After that I will build a Double Eagle .60 from scratch. I'm staying away from ARFS IMAC type birds. Ben Cubillos

I'm in the process of building a " Double Eagle 60 " and I have two power Options to use in this pattern bird, Rossi .60/w/ Nelson hi-po muffler and a YS 110 S. I will be using Robart air retracs. I was also wondering if I should use only one fuel tank or two 8 oz. like the plans call for. I have the wing and stab cores and the rest of the wood parts have been lazer cut for me. I plan to cover with film covering instead of paint. The final wieght should be around 10 lbs. Does anyone have diffrent ideas or tricks that I should be awere off. Feel free to discuss. Ben Cubillos
