RE: "American Enterprise" (Dumas)
Every time I buy a Dumas boat to build (Built the Darby, Dauntless, 3 Coast Guards, Enterprise, 2 Donzi's) I always buy a nice bottle of Scotch. After you read the directions you will need a drink. After a couple of belts the directions get thrown aside and I just start building. The directions are a bit vague.[;)] Marty

RE: Astro Ferrite 25
Don't talk to the lady on the phone. There is a gentleman that works there (I can't remember his name) that knows EVERYTHING about the motors. He has been there since they started and is very helpfull. 15 turn and 10 turn will not make a difference in this boat. The motors have a HUGE amount of power for the Shelly Foss. GREAT motors but it is like putting a Ferrari engine in a Ford Pinto. How much power are you going to put to the motors? If you put 12v to them the boat will FLY out of the water and you could water ski off the back of it. Consider using a transmittion to gear them down. Belt drive? I have some gear reductions for the 25's Marty

I like the MACK hardware. http://www.mackproductsrc.com/props_&_hardware.htm For stuffing tubes shafts and props look at: (MACK may have then too) http://www.raboesch.com/ Dumas is now a supplier for them so they should have some goodies for you. http://www.dumasestore.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=72_75&osCsid=s127fdmjk8id151ik1fm028vr2 I would go with direct drive and don't mess with all the other junk. RE: Donzi
My "professional" opinion is forget the gas. I had in one of my Donzi's 2 OS FS 61 water cooled marine engines. The plumbing for exhaust was a hassle, high temps and trying to electronically synch the two props. Getting clean air into the engines, etc. I gave it up and will never do it again. Nice electric motors can't be beat. No gas, ready to go, clean running, loads of power etc etc etc etc. Just my 2cents worth. I am sure Matt (u166365) can tell you about his set up and how nice it is and how it runs. Marty

RE: Donzi
I am in pretty good contact with Dumas. All the majority of the fiberglass huls will now be made in ABS. Darby, Donzi etc. The are staggering the release of the boats. 1 12v battery is plenty to power 2 Astro'25's Here is my Dauntless at a boat show on 1 12v on Astro 25's WAY more than scale speed: Here is the batteries I used on my Donzi 5,000nmah Sanyo's I had some money at the time burining a whole in my pocket and spent over $100 on each pack. I was running 1 pack on each motor (Astro 40). LOADS of juice but overkill. Marty

RE: Dauntless Modernized
I completly agree with quicksilver. In addition the transom is not flat but curved. Aft weight is good but for a 48inch that displaces a large amount of water weight is another problem. I could put 10 lbs in the back of my Dauntless and it might drop a inch. This boat is in the 20lbs. range and is quite heavy. Hope these pictures help you see how the boat sits in the water. Marty

They deleted my post since I mentioned a auction site. Did they cut out any of you guys? If you would like to buy a Dumas used boat of any kind you should try an auction site or even this site. I have found many great boats there. Dumas Dauntless, Robbe Happy Hunter, Graupner Tito Neri etc. Marty

Honestly getting both motors in synch... and having a clutch.... to get them to idle... is a real pain in the A$$ No reverse... After all that messing aroung 2 Giant AstroFlight 40's provide smooth powerfull thrust. No messy gas and can creep by you and then hit full throttle. Marty

Buy the one you have the most interest in. Then it will keep your attention. Each of the boats will suck up alot of time if you want them real nice. I like the Chris Craft since it is exciting to drive. Marty

RE: Want to upgrade my RC boat, I need advice.
Justin, You are correct! That would be a great upgrade. It would greatly improve your run times. The next step would be to get a little bit "hotter" motor. But then you RISK BURNING OUT THE ESC. And then the vicious cycle begins. If you want to tinker with the boat you can try to water cool the motor if it is possible. Cooling any motor will extend its life. This is certainly true with a cheaper motor. The cooling kit may be more expensive than the motor.[:D] But, hey you can always use the cooling kit on your next boat right? Marty

RE: Want to upgrade my RC boat, I need advice.
Justin, Welcome to the world of making your boat faster. I would not modify that boat at all. Just enjoy it. To run brushless motors you would have to change everything but the hull. And I am not even sure how you would mount anything. You would need to replace Transmitter ESC Running hardware Prop etc. Motors Battery etc etc etc. That hull was not ment for high speeds. I would look for a good used boat that has what you want ready to go. People are always selling and mooving up. Start off with brushed motor to get your feet wet a bit. Poke around at this site and get familiar with all the various parts. You will see that the good stuff gets expensive very fast. For what you paid for the entire boat you could only buy a good sharp balanced Octura prop. for the set up you want. http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/index.php Just my 2 cents. Good luck and hang in there! Marty

RE: Dumas Jolly Jay trawler
I would go with the Thompson Trawler. It is a little larger than the Jay. There is on on e-bay right now. http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Dumas-Fishing-Trawler-Radio-Control-Boat-RC-Kit_W0QQitemZ140140941061QQihZ004QQcategoryZ19166QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem They are getting a premium price since they are going to a ABS hull/ I doubt if MACK has them in stock. The larger boat will handle more chop but not the Bering Sea. It is not a real difficult build. This boat is a nice size and will not let you down! Marty

RE: the unofficial home of the dumas dauntless
Rich and all.. I think I am going to be a copy cat and do the interior! I think it is just asking for it. If you will notice the 1.) front does not have the windows installed. (correct square windows?) and 2.) the equipment locker is not installed??? The hull was done VERY nice and is straight as an arrow. I think I am going to do the hull in black, grey superstructure etc. There is "glass" in all the windows so I am going to have to do a lot of taping. I am finishing up some other projects as well!
