RE: Questions: Ace Seamaster 120
I received a kit as a gift and I'm planning on building it with a PST 600R I have on the shelf. Anyway thinking most of the ply might be appropriate except the wing ribs. I like goirish's tail design mod as it'll minimize the heat shields required if I can drop the horizontal down to fuse top. Will start a build thread when I get it going. Woody.

RE: Jet legend F-4
Roman, I've got the original fiberglass tanks (3 liters or so) so I plumbed a 20oz. sullivan in behind the cockpit to get 7 minute flight with the Titan. The newer tanks are poly and have a lot more capacity...the guys at Kentucky Jets with the poly tanks using Titans didn't have extra tanks and were flying 7 minute flights as well. I'm getting the polys so that I can take out the extra tank and lighten up the load a bit.

Dave, Titan in mine w/Tam pipe, and IMO the Titan is a perfect match....mine also has a smoke system. I did add an extra piece of spring to stiffen the nose strut while Duke wasn't looking...made takeoffs shorter and a whole lot more predictable. The strut should stay fully extended when fueled up, and need just a little push down on the nose to start the compression. You're gonna love this jet. Woody.

RE: JetLegend F-22 Raptor question
h0p...I just ordered these as replacements for my originals and will let you know what I find out. I saw them in AZ in Oct and think the servo position and rudder dimensions are definite improvements over the originals tho. FWIW, what I will be doing if mine look the same as yours, is to use a pin drill to probe the areas on the plans for wood blocks. JL has been good in the past at gluing things IAW plans. With any luck, mine will be drilled at the factory. Woody.

George, the z- rods must absorb some heat as they protrude into the exhaust flow somewhat, but not hot enough to even deform the nylon servo wheels used as fuse bearings/supports after over a hundred flights. Woody.

Hi Dave, thanks, I did get the photos...sorry I didn't acknowledge but have been slammin' to get the jet ready for Kentucky. I had already put air cylinders on the outer doors...will see if they hold them shut in flight, but I've got the feeling that since the JL doors are much more robust than the SM's and should stay closed. Will find out in KY. Flight reports and a build thread with Duke after that. She's got a Titan but will detune until I get a better feel for the pipe. You flown yours? Aloha, Woody.

There are some easy to fix details which are off in the paint job, which if you aren't a T-bird kook or comparing side by side photos, they're not even noticeable. All-in-all I'm doin' the chicken dance as I don't have to paint (much)!!! Can't wait to get started with the build...hope to have her ready for Kentucky Jets. RE: JetLegend F-4 Arrived
Those pics Duke posted are within an hour of cracking open the carton! Looks like JL got virtually every detail correct with CAD precision and engineering. Admittedly it's been quite a few beers...I mean years since I flew the Rhino, but it looks like this one is very, very close to scale and the fit and finish are superb with accurate panel lines, doors, etc....unlike other ARF's out there, the vertical stab is correct to scale as is the nose gun and canopy. Wait'll you see the retracts, struts and wheels....simply gorgeous. This is the Phantom I've been waiting for. Right after helping Duke take those pics, I ran home, called Monica and ordered my own.

RE: F-22 (JL) Vector Thrust Nozzles
Here's about the best I can do for a drawing without tearing the jet apart...sorry I'm no artist nor a draftsman but it's pretty accurate. BTW, to align the drive rod output with the bucket hinge line and make sure the rods engaged the bucket drive tabs, I added the bare ply plates you see in the pics, trial fit and belt sanded the ply until the rods rode smoothly in the slots, then screwed them into the formers once everything was aligned. Then had to tweak (torque) the rods a bit to get the buckets centered and equal. [sm=spinnyeyes.gif] Yup, hate to admit it to the world, but I'm a micrometer and sledge hammer kinda builder!!! Whatever works I guess. Aloha, Woody.

RE: Liquor Bottles as fuel tanks?
Listen to Gary, he's in the plastic business. There's nothing wrong with PET bottle fuel tanks if you can make them fit your application. What's with this pencil test? Is it safe to haul pencils in our jets if they're Kevlar tank equipped or will BVM have Kevlar tank "pencil" ratings soon?[:)] Punctures aren't the only tank fail mechanism, impact would be primary, right? So try hitting your Kevlar tank with a hammer. Sorry Dave but I disagree with your analogy, Kevlar/resin IS NOT the same as concrete/rebar. You said it yourself, the resin makes the Kevlar brittle. Rebar doesn't make concrete brittle, it adds tension strength and shear resistance to the matrix. Sorry too Harley, but Sullivan plastic tank characteristics are completely different than PET/PETE soda bottle "plastic" so please don't insinuate that the Sullivan failure is a mark against PET use or that Kevlar is "magic". Did Uncle Bob really think that the Kevlar tank failing was a good thing? I witnessed a gear up minor crash of a Trim F-86 wth a BVM Kevlar main tank, where the fuse broke in half but the tank shattered into dozens of quarter sized pieces and 2" strips. Fiberglass tanks in several other crashes...ditto but no worse than Kevlar. So unless BV has changed the way Kevlar tanks are made in the past few years, they fail the same as fiberglass tanks and provide no crash resistance of any significance IMHO. I've also witnessed two 1 liter PET tanks full of fuel bounce down the field and remain completely intact after a fail safe 100mph obliteration crash and another set survive a nose dive crash. I've never seen a fiberglass or Kevlar tank survive a crash like those intact. Ever. Like Erbroens I've seen dozens of new and barely used Fiberglass and Kevlar tanks leak at the seams during refueling....never seen that yet with PET bottle tanks and I've put them in 4 jets without any issues. And like Gary said, the PET caps are leak proof, not like those goofy makeshift science class rubber bung stoppers used in Kevlar and fiberglass tanks. And there are some slick threaded anodized aluminum bottle caps available for the PET bottles to boot. Also the Kevlar and fiberglass tanks I've used tend to weep fuel after a few years...I'm guessing from hairline cracks developing in the resin. I will continue to use PET tanks whenever possible (unless some mullethead gets AMA to outlaw them), Kevlar/fiberglass only when they're included in the kit and nothing else will fit. Use whichever tanks you want, except plasma bags of course, but I will never waste my money for Kevlar if there's a suitable replacement. I dream of blow-molded thick wall PET tanks for our jets...like what your water cooler 5 gallon bottles are made of. Still a dream tho. Woody.

RE: F-22 (JL) Vector Thrust Nozzles
rhallgarth, the JL F-22 is a great flying scale jet that builds relatively quickly. And it's a tough bird with replacement parts available if needed. It's the hands down favorite of the 30 or so jets I've flown, especially now that it'll do 3D. Thanks for the complement, Woody.

F-22 (JL) Vector Thrust Nozzles
Here you go. I offered the production rights on these nozzles to several established manufacturers a year ago...no activity, and since I'm getting requests for details from youtube viewers of the flight performance, I'm ready to show all of you how they're made and let you build 'em if you want to. If the Mfg's want to produce them, so be it. Sorry, I just don't have time to make them for others right now. The design criteria were: light weight, dependable, simple, minimal airframe modifications, and just enough VF to push the tail around. I made several prototypes from drawings using craft paper to get the dimensions set, then cut up an old pipe to make a functioning prototype. I tested that one on a stand with a PST J600R thru a straight pipe. I got enough "lift" off the prototype to pick up the back of my test rack...about 3-4 pounds I was guessing. Good enough. I used .01 fully annealed stainless for the final set as it's what we had on hand. It's easy to work and stiff enough to hold shape with a doubler. Each nozzle is comprised of two clam shell buckets, each with a drive tab, hinged with 4/40 hardware on aluminum U channel mounting brackets with springs to hold each half open. The clam shell doublers were spot welded to the buckets with Duke and Larry's Harbor Freight 110V spot welder....man is that thing fun to use! Adapted stock JL wood pipe mount rings were moved to the inside of the former and had to be trimmed a little on the top and bottom to allow full opening of the clam shells. The drive mechanism is a 1/8" rod z-bent and hammered flat about an inch on one end. The flat end fits into the slot in the stab shafts in the inner bearing housing. The rod bearing is just a large nylon servo wheel screwed into the inside glass work in line with the stab shaft, and a wheel collar rides against the inside of the bearing to hold the rod in the stab shaft slot. The lever end of the rod free rides between the bucket tabs. The entire assembly added less than 6 oz. to the tail. Just moved flt. batteries forward an inch to compensate. Here's a video of them functioning. http://idisk.mac.com/jal747//Public/F-22_Nozzles.mpg Right click and save if you're having problems viewing it. As you can see in the video, only one half of each nozzle is driven with the other clam shell spring loaded open. Not sure if the springs are even needed, but it's reassuring that they fail safe open. Have over 40 flights with the nozzles and a JetCat Titan SE. It'll do every scale maneuver except the pedal/pedal falling leaf....but I'm workin' on it. Haven't spun the Raptor yet, but I think the nozzles could help recover from a flat spin. Some were worried about having full time VF, but at normal flight rates, the nozzles don't even enter the hot exhaust flow...only at high rates and slow speed are they effective. So here's some detail pictures of the install. If anyone's interested in more details for a DIY build, I'd be glad to put together some drawings, etc. Aloha, Woody.
