RE: World Models or Airborne Models Tucano 60
I'm curious about that as well. Looking through the manual I can't see any reason for the 7th channel.

RE: Kyosho Spitfire 50 Build
Has anybody flown this plane with a Saito 82 and 3 bladed prop? I'm keen to find out what would be the best size 3 bladed prop for it. Thanks

RE: Seagull PC-9 Build advice please
Stix, remote glow is basically a lead that hooks up to the glow plug at one end and an outlet that you can plug your glow driver into at the other. It enables you to place the glow driver end in an easier to access place than trying to muck around under the nose of the aircarft. It will only assist with the starting. Once you disconnect the glow driver the engine runs by itself. Onboard glow is a system with a seperate battery onboard which will power the glow plug at whatever settings you set it for. Its true that with a properly tuned engine you can run an inverted engine without one... however if you are no expert at tuning engines, and I certainly fit into that category, they provide peace of mind knowing that if the engine's getting fuel it will keep running. I had plenty of deadsticks with my tucano until I fitted an onboard glow. None since then! For $60 it's cheap insurance and doesn't add enough weight to affect the performance at all.

RE: Seagull PC-9 Build advice please
Stix, I have a Phoenix Tucano with an Inverted 46AX and was having a lot of dead sticks till I installed an onboard glow. It transformed the engine and no more dead sticks. You can get one from DL engines in Perth for about $60 including battery. Best investment you'll ever make. Shane

RE: Problems in starting an OS 46 AX engine
Paul, I had exactly the same problem with my 46AX mounted inverted in a Phoenix Tucano. I found that it wasn't getting enough fuel to start and run properly. I would have to put a finger over the exhaust a few times and each time it would pick up some more revs before eventually being able to open the throttle to full. What I do now is really prime it well so that there is fuel dripping out of the carb and she starts no worries. If I find that it starts and won't acclerate, I stop it, prime some more (throttle fully open, finger over the exhaust and hit it with the electric starter for a second or so) and then have another go. To prevent the fuel running out if the engine when sitting there I ran my fuel line up to the top of the cowl and then back down to carb. That makes it a bit harder for the fuel to siphon out. I also use an onboard glow which has transformed the engine and given me complete confidence to do low throttle manoeuvres without the engine cutting out. Cheers

RE: Kyosho Spitfire 50 Build
How did it balance with the 82 and bigger fuel tank? Did you have to add any weight at the tail? cheers.

Jim, Thanks for that. How are the Hobbico retracts holding up. I was worried that they would be a bit weak so I was going to order a Robart set. Shane

RE: PHOENIX TUCANO .40-.51 ARF
rcjets, what pushrod did you use for the nose wheel steering? I just crashed my Tucano after a deadstick and ripped the nose off. Thought it would be a good time to put retracts in while I'm rebuilding it. Your photos and explanations will certainly make my job much easier. cheers

RE: CG on a Boomerang?
If its a Seagull Boomerang 40 then the balance point from the manual is 7.5 cm - 8.5 cm from the leading edge. Cheers

RE: How fast?
Use the formulae Speed = distance/time. Measure the distance between the two points, time it and then break out the calculator. e.g. 200 metres in 5 seconds gives you 40m/s. Multiply that by 3.6 to convert to km/h and you get 144 km/h (89mph). For over there this would be 656 feet/5 sec = 131 ft/s multiply by .68 gives you 89 mph. cheers

RE: I need a rack to put in my car for the field, any suggestions?
I used self tapping screws on mine instead of glue. You can then change it so suit different planes without having to start from scratch.

RE: Retract setup
Well I managed to fix the freeplay. There was no adjustment in it so I put some epoxy on the flats which lock the gear in position and it works like a charm... on the bench at least. It will be interesting to see how long it lasts.

RE: New Trainer Package Purchased
Aust, just thought of something. Don't mount the engine too far forward or you may have to add weight to the tail to get it to balance. When I mounted my engine I gave myself plenty of room between the firewall and the engine (35mm) for the fuel filter etc and then with the battery as far back as I can get it it balances slightly nose heavy. Around the 20mm mark would probably be ideal. Shane

RE: PHOENIX TUCANO .40-.51 ARF
I have a 46Ax with an MAS 10x6 prop and it's also fairly slow. Though its a nice plane its a bit heavy for for a 46 size engine. A 55AX would probably go well in it.

RE: New Trainer Package Purchased
I didn't have a dremel at that stage and just filed it away till the engine fit in. Don't take away too much though as it can make the mount too weak. We had a few at out club where they had to replace the mount because of that. Mine was fine though.

RE: Retract setup
Sounds like the ones I have. They have plastic innards with a blue metal casing. I'm just concerned that with that much play it's going to be very unstable on the gorund.

RE: New Trainer Package Purchased
Aust, thats a good setup. I started with that year ago (except I had a JR Max66 radio) and the old girl is still flying (107 flights and counting). I still take her out everytime I go flying and use it to learn new aerobatics on. It's also good when the weather turns bad and you dodn't want to risk a better plane. Good luck with it all.

RE: Retract setup
Well I've finally had time to get them installed and seem to have the servo set up correctly as they lock at both ends of travel however there is a lot of freeplay in them. When extended they move around 10mm side to side. Is this normal or is there a way of adjusting that out? I don't know what brand the retracts are as they came with the kit. Thanks Shane

OS46AX white exhaust residue
I have a new 46AX (it's run for about 3 hours) and it is starting to produce a whitish residue in the exhaust. Its an off white colour and feels very oily, not gritty at all. The engine is mounted inverted in a Phoenix Tucano. I thought it may have possibly been water in the fuel however when I use the same fuel in another 46AX mounted upright it does not produce the residue. Could it be the fuel frothing as when you rub it between your fingers it then loses the whitish colour?. It produces it both at idle and full throttle. I don't know whether it is related but the same engine revs markedly at the bottom of a loop even if a constant throttle position is maintained. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Shane

Seagull AT6 Texan
Hi guys. I've just bought a Seagull AT6 Texan and the recommended engine size is .46 - .52 2S or .72 - .82 4S. The model should weigh in around 3.5kg ( ~7.5 lbs for our American friends). I was originally going to put a Saito 82 FS in it but I've read lots of reports about this being a very thirsty engine. The fuel tank provided is only 200cc (7oz) which would give me a flying time of around 7-8 minutes. Would an OS 70 FS have enough power to fly this decently and any idea what the fuel consumption is for it? Thanks Shane

RE: Best option for my first trainer
Craig, I've just learnt on the Boomerang 40 with a 46AX and JR Max 66. It's a great plane and to date I've done around 80 flights and she still looks as good as new. I've also been using it to learn some basic aerobatics such as cuban 8, immelman and stall turns and it handles them no worries (good enough for a newbie anyway...). You should be able to pick one up for around a $100. Try Col Taylors, they're very reliable and probably as cheap as anyone in Australia. cheers Shane
