RE: Realflight G5Coming Soon
Well I took the "hook" on the G5 series. As I am an "old schooler" I purchased my first flight sim from Dave Brown in 91' and still have it, "floppy" and all. Always wanted to upgrade, and no I have NOT been flyin' the DB series all these years. Last year with the purchase of a new computer, I took the specs (at that time) for Real Flight believe it was 4.5 and upgraded the computer to those spec's (video card?) anyway, it was about 70 or 80 bucks. So, as I await the G5 series and see what comes about.

RE: ASP engines
ASP = A cceleration S peed P erformance, I purchased a couple in the late 80's of .40 size and ran them on Quickee's for racing for that type of class racing. I was very happy for the performance of the engine(s) Still have them "pickled". Yeah, "one of these days" I'll install them in a sport plane. Good running engine for what it represented. My .02 worth.

All good ideas posted for polishing and waxing. Here's one that's been around a while, TOOTHPASTE ! Works great to clean up hazy canopies etc. Also,I've used it on my watch crystal and really cleans it up well, especially if it has a plastic crystal.

RE: 2009 US Scale Masters Championships
Just got back from ScaleMasters ! Very impressed with how organized, smooth flying, the camaraderie of everyone that I visited with. Along with The Wenatchee Red Apple flyers members and facility Where do I begin. The weather was great, clear, 85 degrees and a very slight wind down the runway all 3 days I was there. It appears that the expertise of flying the repective models were evident, these guys are serious !! Along with the Red Apple Flyers beautiful flying site along with their VOLUNTEERING their time and labor. In addition the "Scalemasters" organization itself, you can see how everyone worked together to bring this event off with a great presentation and effort. Where do you can go to a flying field and have a HOT SHOWER !!! and RV hook ups !! Not many I would venture to guess, Obiviously this is an exception, but hey I'll take it. Anyway, enjoyed the event, as this being my "first one" to ever to witness of this type of competition.

Can't wait :) Say, I'll be in RV row with a Nash trailer with a Ford F-350, come by and say hi. Mike Ps: I've got a '51 that is begging to lay some scale attributes on it, to be patterned after my uncles that he flew during WW II.

Wow, great to see the "pattern" pic's. Seeing all the great designs, myself, I scratched a Deception with a Webra speed .61, great flying plane, all my activities were on the west coast though. As I read through the post's, it appears that many of "us" old school pattern drivers of the past are still currently active in the hobby after all these years in one form or another. RE: Washington State RC
Hello: Mike here from Bellingham,Wa. Were located approximately 75 miles NORTH of Seattle, 20 miles South of the Canadian border. (city of approx. 67,000) I agree with Dave, we have had a "screwy" winter/spring. Take a look at the local club, at: www.bellairflyers.com. Yes, were on the "wet" side of the Cascades, but, we to also get our fair share of flying in, maybe not as much on the "dry" side where Dave is located. The forcast for today and through the next five days, sunny, with few clouds, from the mid 50's to the low 60's. NICE SUMMER STYLE WEATHER FOR US !:) Come to our "Big Bird Fly In" the first full weekend of June and enjoy flying and rubbin' shoulders.

Thanks to all who responded. Yes I am aware there has been problems with "cracking, heaviness etc. of the aluminum mounts. Personally I've flow this stye of mount for many years and have NEVER had problems of those listed. Not saying that won't happen, it just hasn't happend to me. Have used the metal type from .20 size to .91 size two stroke through the years. Thanks to "Broken Wings" as suggesting M.E.C.O.A. as they continue distributing the C.B. mounts. It is difficult to "find" old school products nowdays, they tend to be "hidden" away from mainstream advertising. Again Thanks for all the responses.

Metal Engine Mount Resources ?
Hello All: Thought I would post here as it would apply best. I've scanned the forum's but no luck. I am looking for "metal" style engine mounts. I know there are many variables out there. Specifically, the style like the "old school" CB mount brand. For 40,60,90 size 2 and 4 stroke engines. All cast aluminum came in short or long length beams. Looking around now it is all fibre/plastic renforced type. I know there are "sheet" metal types out there, but still looking for the "cast" type. Any suggestions? Thanks

RE: Kit or scratch builders dream SIG pics
Seeing this reminds me when a good buddy and myself took off on a early Saturday morning driving from central California heading to BRIDI aircraft I believe it was La Habra. Anyway, Rusty knew Joe and we were able to obtain balsa and other goodies. My mouth dropped when we got into the "room", ahhh the smell of freshly sawn balsa. We had free reign of what we needed. Both Rusty and I were into pattern flying and he was also into Formula 1 racing (now Q40) Personally, I was able to pick up NICE wood, planks, sheeting (6"width) and many other sizes. Then we went into the "boneyard" and got alot of stuff free ! Example, 1/64 ply cutoffs from machining process that they could not use. The size was about 8" wide tapered down to about 4"width. with locating holes in it. I picked up about 2" in thickness of this stuff, I still have some after all these years. Joe was very friendly and helpfull. This all took place around 1970,71. Great memories.

RE: Remember the old Wing MFG retracts
Yep, I've got a set of the Kraft Multicons also. At the time I purchased a tri gear set. Threw them in a "Deception" and yes, they were reliable. Only thing, the plane met it's demise on a final approach, and at that time I made "long" final approaches, make a long story short, the plane came into contact with "low" telephone wires. Destroyed the plane ! Found all the parts, except the nose gear ! Would be nice to find another nose gear to go along with my Signature series radio, 1976 version. Thanks for bringing up great memories. Oh almost forgot. I think I payed around $125.00 for them at the time. Big bucks then.

RE: What did you get for Christmas?
Well, I got a "heater" yep, a shop heater to heat my shop :) Now, that I've got it all hooked up, I am waiting for the propane company to come out, and finalize the hook up, as we have had a "HUGE" snow event where I live and they have priority to help those folks that need help now. So, now I wait and can't work in the shop for now. It will be sooooo nice to be warm and toasty to glue, resin and build when time comes. UPDATE: I've got HEAT ! Yep, new years day, I was able to turn on the gas, check for leaks and "flip" the switch, bingo, HEAT. Had to open the shop doors for about 45 minutes as the "newness" to burn off, ie: the manufacturing oils, etc. Nice and quiet for the when the fan turns on. Those of you that might be interested. I purchase a "Hot DawG" heater by Modine. Rated at 75,000 btu's. Now on to building my Torsion Box building platform.

RE: best transmitter battery?
I agreed with Rodney regarding the reliability and "stableness" of the ni-cads. I purchased SR batteries ni-cads last June for my trans and reciever packs. I had previously had their packs and kept cycle, capacity records and I was highly pleased with the results of flying through the years. Yes, you do pay more for this type of battery offered by SR, BUT, you get quality, and service that is much appreciated in yesterdays and todays markets. No, I am not affiliated with SR what so ever. The bottom results, is that, I've always made a take off and LANDING with my planes that are powered with this type and quality of battery. (exception: dumb thumbing !) other wise known as: SAFETY. My two cents worth.

RE: Big Stik History.
Phenomenal airplane. I would say a "standard" to be measured by for sport type, FUN aircraft. I've built all three, .20,.40 and .60 size. Scratched the .20 size. I just purchased a Big Stick .60 kit off the bay' just 3 days ago, waiting for it to show, Yay ! It will be a fun build, I hope to add to the fuselage attachment points for floats. It seems like I've heard at one time that if you "flattened" the diehedral, that the aircraft would "point' allot better in rolling maneuvers, etc. Anyone heard of any suggestions to this ?

RE: Wen Mac model
May I make a suggestion on "loosing up" the engine. I've used this product for years for various applications. Has work well for my needs. The product is known as "Kroil" comes in an orange colored can, you can get 1/4 pints up to gallons and barrels of this stuff. They advertising moneiker is known as the "oil that creeps" Meaning give it time it can "creep" into everywhere. Regarding your engine, most likely it's congeled oil from the original manufacturing, so, suggest that you use eye dropper and drop it into the intake and exhaust areas and let it set. This may help loosen the engine. You may have "work" the prop back and forth AFTER you have let it set to help spread the Kroil, if it "breaks" free a little, add a little more and let it set, come back to it later ( next day maybe) and work it a little more. Just don't get into a rush with it. Kroil has a unique smell to it, kinda like a "sweet" machine oil smell of sorts. As I recall, the costs are around 6 to 7 dollars for a small can of it and it does have a dispensing spout with it. A little pricey but it's good stuff in my opinion.

RE: Building this winter
RainDave: May I suggest a Deception. I have the "twin" to your engine, with the in flight mixture control. BULLET PROOF engine. Very user friendly engine wise. Deception, what can I say, I "scratched" one many years ago, and the Webra pulled it with authority. Deception is VERY capable of performing all the maneuvers, IF the pilot can push the sticks in the right direction. Slab side type of construction, typical of the era. Build it using contest balsa and then "lighten" the wood further, eye ball engineering stuff. I then used 3/4 ounce cloth and poly resin for finish and auto paint. Maybe now use 1/2 ounce cloth, Deft Poly Arcrylic finish, with sealer etc. for a "lighter" style of finish prior to paint. I knew Jim Kimbro the designer a little, as I lived in the San Joaquin Valley at the time he was living there in the same area etc.

Where Have All The Kits Gone ?
This is for general discussion. I've got a few years of modeling under my belt, and I recall when ARF's were the rarity, example: Lanair's models, Jesters, etc. and kits abound of the balsa type. Now, because of "change" the opposite is true. Less kits verse's many ARF'S, ARC'S etc. availible. Now my point of the discussion, It's hard to find a relative complete source for kits. You have to hunt and pick for viewing. My question, has someone assembled a resource of kits, kit cutters etc on the web where you can go to one resource or several, rather spending allot of time "surfing"- "window shopping" ? Yes I know I am asking for the "golden ring", but I gotta ask. :) Thanks for any suggestions.

RE: Balsa USA
I really hate to accept the fact that Lone Star is out of the game. I know last Thanksgiving they had their disasterous fire, and their web site reflected via photo's of the destruction. In their text, there was a glimmer of hope that they would reassembled the "ashes" and open up again. So, the final question for me is: Is Lone Star DEFINATELY out ? and others will supplement our balsa needs. I have contest balsa from them that I had ordered over the years and Riley had the "eye" for balsa selection and his suppliers. His kits, ie: quickie, which I built several were great.

RE: Best Performance 2-stroke For .60 Plane
Ok ! I'll bite the hook. Yeah, Iam "old school" bought a Webra Speed RE with adjustable mixture on carb. ran a OPS pipe on FAI fuel. Hauled a scratched Deception through the maneuvers. Performed well for the pattern we flew then. Very reliable easy start ie: spinner start, good power, wouldn't "sag" in maneuvers, powered through them well. Yes, it is "pickled" for now, The "scratched" Deception at that time, was contest balsa, with 3/4 oz cloth and polyester resin and lots of sanding, KRAFT multi cons retracts, with the hot set up of using "Imron" by Dupont, bullet proof paint, BUT, you need to use a seperate breathing air source for your body. Memory recalls that it weighed around 11lbs. ! GULP ! :) Getting my new shop together, heat and all and then I am going to "scratch" another Deception to my own specs and throw in the Webra.
