RE: Nitoplanes Giant Scale J3 Piper Cub 120
I've got about 15 flights on mine now. Easy to put together but watch the horizontal stab incidence; mine was off as you can see from the first picture. Easy enough to fix and allows the plane to fly level as you increase or decrease throttle. Put the receiver switch on the inside of one of the doors and tie wrapped the rx battery to the bottom of the pilot tray. Didn't need to add any weight to balance. Used an OLD OS Gemini Twin 1.20 with a Sullivan glow plug lighter. Those old Gemini's were terrible for loosing a jug. Main thing to watch with this AC is the landing gear. Mine are fine but some have had bad joints that needed mig welding. Throw away the bands that come with the kit for the gear and go with six number 64 band per side on the gear. Got my kit from AK-Models. Alex is a good guy to deal with and ships quickly. Here is an older thread on this AC. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_7687151/anchors_7687151/mpage_1/key_/anchor/tm.htm#7687151

RE: CMP BF109F BUILDING THREAD
Haven't got my spinner yet but it is on the way. I want to polish mine too. My experience in the past has been to chuck the spinner onto a drill press and use emory paper or tape. Depending upon the initial roughness of the metal I usually start with 220 grit and work up to 800 or so. Finish out with very fine pumice on a wet cloth. Use rouge on a VERY soft cloth for the final high shine.

RE: Bob Cat Copy Falcon 120 Jet
I never use adhesive; too hard to clean off later without damaging the retract's air nipples. I use safety wire, .015 soft stainless.

RE: Goldberg Piper Cub Anniversary Kit
At one time there was a wing kit available for the Goldberg Cub. Built one with both the long and short wings. Short (clipped) wing for windy days and long wing for calm days. Try Tower to see if they stock any of the old wing kits. Otherwise, pop a rib loose and make your own, as the previous posters suggested...

RE: Hitec 1/4 scale servo pin out for futaba??? HELP
Yep, that's the OLD Airtronics plug. You will need to cut the plug off and solder on a Futaba or universal plug. You can also tease out the pins and put them into a Futaba or universal plug body. On this lead the RED is Positive (3), the CENTER BLACK is Negative (2), and the OUTSIDE BLACK is Signal (1). The plug itself can't be used on anything except the old Airtronics receivers due to the size and ridges. I have lots of old Airtronics and Hitec servos that I have replaced the plugs on and they work fine.

Has anyone flown theirs with the dolly in place? I need to do the first few flights with the dolly in place due to our runway being paved and the grass off the runway extremely rough and deep.[&o] Would like to get a feel for the airplane before I take it to a good grass runway and fly without the dolly.

OK, now I see why I am having to add weight in the rear to balance WITH the dolly in place. My overall weight will be right with yours if I don't have the dolly in place. Will work all that out after I have a few flights under my belt and a dolly release system on board. Thanks for all the help guys!!! Bill

RE: CMP giant scale Zero build
Thanks Joe for the info and for bringing the pictures from early in the thread, forward. In my email to Chris I had referenced your modification and install pictures from page 2 or 3 of this thread but the reference got lost. As Joe says, the retract body needs to be angled fore and aft to line the strut up with the strut cut out. The retract body also needs to sit in the wing with the front mounting plate closer to the top wing surface to allow the forward rake of the struts/wheels to provide adequate ground handling. Joe, correct me if my comments are confusing or incorrect![:D]

RE: CMP giant scale Zero build
Thanks very much Paladin for taking us through your Zero build. I have learned a lot and will put it to good use this winter on my Zero build. Have to agree with you that Sierra are the best retracts out there. The ones on my CMP Texan are beautiful pieces of work. Unfortunately, I can't afford to put them in all my airframes...[&o] I have to disagree on the Century Jets as my dealing with them has been marginal at best. When you buy a set that are supposed to be made for the airframe and are drop-ins but aren't, and then the retract angle is wrong, and then it takes months to get the things correct... Sorry, but my experience precludes me from buying any more CJ's.[:o] I love Spring Airs, as you can see from my previous postings. Nothing but positive things to say about their durability, service, prices, etc. [8D] Rhom Airs were my favorites for those thin wing ducted fans we used to fly. Still using some in smaller airframes[:D] Robarts are good but can be hard to come by, depending on if they are making retracts or other things. They have definately slowed down delivery since they sold the company to someone else. I also don't like to have to pay more for tubing, valves, air tanks, etc just to make the retracts, retract. [8|] Haven't bought any Shindin products but have heard from other people that they take a LOOOOOOOOOOONG time to receive. That doesn't help at all when I'm trying to get my bird on her legs. Hate deadweight! I would like to balance the plane my moving servos, batteries, etc. and I need the wing with retracts to do that.[:(] Bill

RE: 1/3 Scale Mustang
If I'm not mistaken, a lot of Mr. Campbell's airplanes were cut/carved from foam, reinforced appropriately with spars and ply, covered with balsa sheeting, and then finished. Seemed like he would show up at Toledo every year with a new giant subject.

RE: CMP Messerschmitt Bf 109F (HAHN) 120 - 73
Looking at the assembly manual on my 109 you actually use three of the rights on the right wing and one on the left wing, along with the two left covers. See the drawing in assembly step 4 (Main Wing), page 3. Guess they did it that way so the flap servos are turning the same way without having to reverse one.

RE: CMP giant scale Zero build
I have used the 700 series Spring Air retracts on a number of over 20lb aircraft, including turbines, with no trouble what so ever. I use a 1/2" strut with the retract unit, either Robart or Spring Air. Robart look a bit more scale but the Spring Air struts work just fine.

RE: CMP giant scale Zero build
Check out http://www.retracts.com/ They look just like Robarts but are much better quality and durability. I have used Spring Air units for more than twenty years with no problems and great service. They are good enough that Robart, and other companies, has started to copy them and offer air up/spring down gear. I agree with paladin that, properly set up, it doesn't matter what kind of retract you use. I have, however, had a safety wired hose pop off due to Texas heat (not over pressurization). Saved a belly landing on a very high dollar airplane by having Spring Airs installed. Just one more level of protection. Prices are better than most air powered retracts as the Spring Airs come with air tank, hose, fill unit, and up/down valve. Nothing extra to buy except a servo to operate the valve. And to answer your other question: No, the Spring Airs are air up and spring down. Just my .99 cents...
