RE: F-86 Sabre markings placement.
Tailor Made has a lot of very detailed scale decal placement charts in large sizes: http://www.tailormadedecals.com/index.php?option=com_docman&Itemid=34 The F-86 shows all 4 views in 2 languages! Rusty

RE: Smoke oil?
Check it out: http://www.smokingairplanes.com/smoke-oil.php Shipping to the east coast would be high, but the MSDS link shows the ingredients of their product - looks like plain mineral oil - the guy at smokingplanes said it was parrafin based mineral oil, with a small additive he said wasn't necessary. He suggested checking with local oil distributors to source it. Be sure to check the MSDS of anything you plan to use - some stuff can be highly carcinogenic when burned. Rusty

Man, I wish you had more details - what specific airframes were the 2 at the local PA airport? How were they powered? How were they flown? And the one you saw in VA, what version was that one, and what was the consensus after it went in as to cause? After searching RCU itself, Bing and Google as well, all I got was the hit for the one that was on youtube, RCPete's rebuild of Francis' old 500+ flight bird, and Adils old thread. I used several search strings - BVM bandit failure - bandit wing failure, Stab failure, flutter, etc. I'm pretty good at finding old threads and such, but I cant seem to find anything. Post some links, please!

RE: Ultra flash or Bandit
I have also seen and herd of several bandits shedding wings, stabs, etc in flight during normal use.
I would be really interested in some substantive details on this, Voy. Please post more info... Most everyone here remembers Adil's issue, but honestly thats the last I've heard or seen of what you describe above, and that one was extremely isolated with many circumstances about it. On what versions comparable to a UF have you seen/heard these issues happen? I have seen a Youtube of a guy who admittedly flew a BARF 100 mph over VNE and destroyed it, but that would fall far beyond the parameters of normal use. I'm still working on a composite super myself, so if there is anything I need to look out for or be aware of, then I want to know! Rusty

RE: anyone ever used air cylinders for slats?
Fender, I just use Bing or Google to search RCU - RCU's search engine just doesn't work...Search "RCU slats" and you'll usually find what you're looking for. Use "RCU" before anything you want to find and the results are usually pretty good - if you know the thread title, that helps. You can also do "RCU (username)" and find a lot. Invert, I thought about the uneven deployment too, so I made sure my air lines are exactly the same length to both cylinders in each wing, then kept them even back to the valve. They only hang up after like 15 deployment/retraction cycles when the air pressure is way too low. Its important to have the cylinders mounted in such a manner as there is no binding in any direction too - but its not hard to set up. Rusty

RE: Carbon Fiber Fuel Tank?
Thanks, I like the color of that epoxy. I recently did a conformal smoke tank for my KingCat, so it could sit exactly over the CG with max available volume (65oz.). I also inserted a wooden dowel to hold the plug as you did. Made pre-cut panels before lay-up too. I had considered using packing tape and wax over the foam, but did not because I wanted to keep it in one piece if possible. My luck with acetone was mixed however. It melted most of the foam, but left a gooey mess at the bottom. Admittedly, I did not give it much time to dissolve the remaining mess, and I ended up cutting the tank in half to clean the rest out. I re-joined it with 6oz carbon cloth, so it ended up much stronger than before. Added BVM tank fittings and made a mount for both. Next time I'll sand the plug smoother, use lighter cloth and try the PVA. Rusty P.S. Thanks to Eric Clapp for the smoke system! It was raffle swag from Mississippi Afterburner this year [8D]

RE: Leading edge slat servo torque question
I was glad to learn about the scale operation of the F-86 slats, I never took the time to find out how they work. After thinking it over, I'm going to seperate mine to work in unison with the flaps so they can help with takeoff also. Rex do you have any pics of the ones you just did? I remember seeing the wings in your shop but don't understand how or where the servo is situated in the F-18 wings. Why does it only have one per surface? Would a small air ram work for them as well? or electric? or servos are best? What servo did you use? Uncle Joe, what servos were in that F16? Great pics, per usual!

RE: Leading edge slat/FLAP servo torque question
On my 1/5 FEJ Sabre slats, I used 2 Airpower 3/4" stroke air cylinders (Dreamworks) per wing. Mounted them in the wood servo box by adding a few blocks and used nuts/screws that they came with. The pushrods for the slats are connected to the air cylinders with BVM brass gear door connectors, but a wheel collar would do. The air system is strong, lightweight, reliable and a third of the price of decent servos. I used restrictors to slow the actuation, but you could use wheel collars for that as well. Since the actuation is linear, there is no binding to worry about as long as you install them straight. It also allowed me to make the factory cutouts for the pushrods a lot smaller - I thought the holes were way too big out of the box. I paired my slats with the speed brakes using a BVM hi-flow valve I had on hand. Robart makes a red one with needles that you can adjust the speed with easily that might work well for this too. RE: FEJ fuel Tanks
I put Dreamworks ones in my FEJ tanks. But they need a smaller hole, so I Hysol'd some thick poly-ply "donuts" to get them the right size. I see there are a couple cracks in your tank, so that would kill 2 birds with one stone...plus, the Dreamworks ones can be unscrewed to service the clunk.

As long as there is no slop in the linkage and the hinges are tight, I doubt the linkage geometry is going to cause flutter. Your plane looks awesome, BTW. Got any more pics?

RE: Question for someone who really knows linkage geometry and composite horns
+1 to schroedm's suggestion to make it equal. Don't forget the beer! [:D] It should work fine the way it is, but you will have more up than down elevator throw as it is. Depending on what radio you're using and how much total throw you have, you may be able to even out the throw differential with programming alone. If your linkage is binding when you move it, a new pushrod with a screw-on ball link on the horn at the hinge line should help.

RE: HELP! ProMark Dry Transfers not coming off on Flite Metal!
I've actually used 2-3 year old ProMark graphics successfully, but not on Flite Metal. First I used the hairdryer like Craig said, then holding the graphic in place in the desired spot, applied heat with a monocote iron set on medium-high to get it sticky again. I like to burnish from one side or corner first. Pull the backing away gently as the graphic releases from the backing, and burnish it down as you peel the backing back. Go slow, and if it begins to tear, lay the backing back down a little and heat and/or burnish some more. It goes slow at first, but gets easier. Fresh graphics go easy and fast, and don't need much heat at all. Rusty
