RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
I normally do not use the brake on my electric aicraft. Using props up to 10" pitch, no brake was ok. Once I started to use the 13" and higher pitched props, I found that I needed the brake. I started at 20%, then 30%, and now I am at 50% brake. The 50% brake is perfect except for the squeal you hear when you power back up. I find it very annoying but I have not experiemented with it to see how much lower I can go and still like the braking feel.
ORIGINAL: dando Thank you for the answer! I had to enlarge the slot above the elevator servos in order to get the horns and travel I wanted (~20 degrees). I will post some photos when I have some other progress. Do you remember in which areas you applied some thin or medium CA in order to improve the factory glue joint, for example motor box, landing gear blocks, servo mounting trays, anti-rotation pins, blind nuts and such? Thank you! Kind regards, Nickolay
Seep some CA on every joint that you can reach. While I found no areas that did not have a good glue joint, it took less than 5 minutes to do.

RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
ORIGINAL: dando Hi again! I managed to get the S9650 in one of the elevator halves and would like to proceed with the linkage setup, but I've got another concern now. I'm opting for using a servo horn with the hole around 13-15mm apart from the servo shaft. This would enable me to use the 60 degree per side servo travel (a total of 120 degrees). To use that however, I'd need to open the servo horn slot (widen and maybe even lengthen it). With the recommended Dubro arm, I'd have to reduce the servo travel to about 60% instead of the full 140% (Futaba 9C Super) in order to get the bolt, nut and ball link not press the balsa and still get 20 degrees of elevator throw. What end point adjustments for the elevator servos do you have? What is the distance between the servo shaft and ball link hole on your servo horns? Thank you! Kind regards, Nickolay
Remember, this is not a 3D aircraft. You will only use 11-15 degrees of throw on the elevator. I also used the S9650's, but due to the width of the Dubro arms, I used a metal servo arm so I did not have to trim the opening.

RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
One of the things to consider in batteries if you are sport flying vs running a pattern sequence is your power on vs power off. Running a pattern sequence, you have many power off moments in 45, 60 and 90 degree downlines. In sport flying, you have the power on a lot more. Many of the more experienced pattern pilots have very good throttle management skills. Depending on the class flown and power management, I have seen a lot of guys drop down to 4200-4500 mah packs (still 10S) because with good throttle management they can get through the sequence. 4200-4500 mah packs also weigh less as well. Once I was through the major trimming of the Vanquish and started to run some patterns, my flight time increased by 2 minutes. Between only using 3/4 throttle for up lines and and the power off down lines, that is how the extra 2 minutes was achieved.

RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
ORIGINAL: dando Hello, I've got a question for you. I'm trying to get the Futaba S9650 servos in the elevator halves, but haven't managed to yet. I filed the servo bay in one of the halves about a milimeter each side lenght-wise, but the servo still doesn't fit in there. Should I file out around half a milimeter more each side and get closer to the pre-drilled screw holes, or use another method of inserting the servo? Should I just push it straight in there or I'd have to tilt it to one side so the cable goes in first? My other thoughts are about the servo horns used on the plane. The ones from Dubro with 3/4'' (~19mm) distance from the servo shaft center to the hole are recommended for the ailerons and, I believe, for the elevator. Wouldn't this induce too much throw (more than 20-25 degrees)? Has anyone used a cut S9650 four-sided horn (like one of these)? I'll be using Futaba S9650 servos for the elevator halves and Futaba S9551 servos for the ailerons. Also, is the double-sided horn in the Dubro package alright to use for the rudder servo horn? I am aware that Dubro horns are a little sloppy on the Futaba servo splines. Some servo installation photos would be very appreciated. Thank you in advance! Nickolay
I also have the S9650's in the tail. You will have to remove some of the ply mount to where the servo screws would be, maybe 2-2.5mm. Just keep trimming until you can get them in. It took me about an hour for the first one and then about 20 minutes for the second one. Also, if you use the Dubro servo arms, you will have to trim the opening. I elected to use metal servo arms that I already had which are much thinner than the Dubro arms. I have the Dubro arms on all other servo's.

RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
I will check the CG for you the next time I put it back together. Honestly, I just follwed Brians trim chart. All was good except I had some pitch in KE. I moved the batteries forward and the KE pitch was gone. For some reason I thought I was carrying a tad of down elevator trim which in the trimming charge Brian said that was normal and to adjust the stab incidence to match the elevator. After I moved the batteries forward, elevator trim was 0. That is why I think I am very close with the trim on the Vanquish.

RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
Just got back from another 4 flights on the Vanquish. Changes from the last outing: Decreased the wing incidence to .7 pos. I think I was at .8 or even .9. Moved the ESC as forward as I could and trimmed the wiring down, saved .25 oz. Increased the ESC brake setting to 30% from 5%. Moved the batteries another 1/2" forward. Reduced the down elevator mix to throttle from 2% to 1% then to 1.5%. Increased down elevator throw. Increased low rate rudder throw. Up lines are straight with no pull to the canopy. Down lines are pretty much straight. 45 degree upright down lines hold straight 45 degree inverted down lines still have a slight pull to the canopy. Knife Edge flight holds straight, no mixing Inverted flight is solid. What is next to be worked on: Need more elevator for spins. Full elevator the plane just mushes through. Need to work on stall turns with better technique. I think the rudder throw is fine. Landing approach, the plane floats well and I may need more brake or even droop the ailerons a tad to slow it down for spot landings. What I like: The Vanquish is very true in the air. The view of the plane is vey easy to see and wind correct. Power on the Dualsky 6360-12 with the APC 20.5x14E prop is very good. 3/4 power verticals with 2 rolls is easy. Snaps, upright and inverted are clean and stop immediately. Spins stop immediately. Overall I am very happy with the aircraft and I think I am in the final stages of trim. I am not a fan of using switches, but I may need to use one for stall turns and spins.

I'm an EF fan as you can see!
Same here! The Vanquish is my 4th EF plane. I see Chris and Curtis a few times a year at the various shows. At the SMS show in Perry, GA, our booths are next to each other. Actually, the IMAC sequences are harder on the airframe than most (not all) 3D manuevers. One of our pilots just lost a Comp-Arf 260. Never 3D'd the plane. His Advanced sequences is hard on the airframe. He had a structual failure after a few hundred flights. Plane did not have a single scratch on it.

One thing to keep in mind about wing incidence, the wing flies level. If you have too little wing incidence, the fue will fly tail down. Too much wing incidence, the fuse will fly tail high. The first 3 flights were at .4 pos incidence on the wing and the tail was down. Now that the wing incidence is at .7, the fuse flies straight. When I first noticed this on the first flight which I was also tail heavy. 2nd and 3rd flight I had moved the batteries forward and the CG was much better, but the tail still flew down. For the third flight, I had 3 other pilots watch the plane to see if they saw the samething I did and they did. IMHO, .6 or .7 pos wing incidence is about right. Now I will work on moving the batteries forward to see if the KE pitching is relieved. It should be according the trimming chart. If not, then I will increase the wing incedence to .8, but I hope I do not have to. Another option would be to increase the incedence of the stab a bit too.

RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
3 more flights this morning on the Vanquish. The redid wing and stab incidence was great. The new APC 20.5x14E prop was incredible. Plenty of power now. Verticals are done at 3/4 throttle. Still need to work on CG. The last flight I moved the batteries back about 1/4" and I think that was too far. What I liked about it was the inverted flight required just a tad of down elevator pressure but the feel of the plane was off a bit. The Vanquish requires more elevator throw for my feel than what my Sequel did back in the 90's. My pattern planes had about 11 degree's of elevator throw and the Vanquish is about 16. When landing, I am using much more elevator to control the desent rate. It might be that the Vanquish is 11 lbs and the Sequel was 9.75 lbs and a smaller airframe. So far I am very pleased with the Vanquish.

RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
Frustated. Just made all my adjustments. Using my level and my Smartool Angle tool, I leveled the fuse like I did when I setup the airplane. The Smartool is giving me different readings depending on where I place it on the fuse. The bubble on the level is centered, so I found the spot where I got a 0 reading on the Smartool. The wings are now at .7 degrees positive. I planned on .6, but making that fine of an adjustment is hard. Then I checked the stab. It was .4 positive! Either I screwed up when I set it up or the set screws loosened. They are 0 now. I bet if I do it all again, the readings will be different. Changed props to the 20.5x14 APC and moved the rx back back and the flight packs will be forward more. I plan on flying it again tomorrow. I wish these had Gator wing adjusters......
ORIGINAL: danamania Congrats! It sounds like you like your new Vanquish. Glad that your maiden flights were successful. Wheel pants are a PITA on grass LOL!
Its my fault. I installed them per the manual knowing that the way they recommend is not going to hold up. Why I just didn't change it to a 2-56 blind nut, I don't know. Its not like it would have been surgory to install them. My last pattern plane (and contest) was in 1998 flying Masters class. While my IMAC planes fly well, I have never flown any IMAC plane that was as good as a pattern plane. I do like the Vanquish and was comfortable with it right away. From the limited time I have on it, it is smooth and very predictable. I did do some snaps, but I was on high rate rudder and full rudder was way too much. Not worried about that aspect yet. Going into the garage now to make my changes.

RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
Perfect weather this morning, so I was able to maiden the new Vanquish today. Actually I got in 3 flights. First flight: The first flight required 2 clicks of right aileron, 1 click down elevtaor, and 2 clicks right rudder. My Futaba 12Z tx has the trims set for 3 steps per click. CG was tail heavy some. Handling was very smooth and landed nicely. Reduced aileron through 3%, increased elevator through 3%, increased aileron expo by 5%. Wheel pants were loose. I am running the Dualsky 6360-12T motor on a APC 20x13E prop. Batteries were my older set and the power was not quite what I expected, more power is needed. Motor temp was 119 F. Motor ran flawless. Second flight: Moved the 2nd set of batteries more forward by about 1/2". CG felt better. Power was better as well. The 2nd set of batteries are much newer. Wing incedence is set at 4 deg positive, needs to be increased. I will reset to 6 degrees positive. Full power verticals had no pull to the canopy. Knife Edge had no coupling. This could change when I change the incidence. Added 3% more up and down elevator throw. Lost 1 wheel pant during the flight. Removed the other wheel pant will fly without them for now. Third Flight: Spent most of this flight doing slow rolls, point rolls, stall turns, and spins. The Vanquish has a nice break in the spin, stops when sticks are released. Inverted flight requires some down elevator. I will adjust the radio parameters as I go along. I hope to get the following adjustments done today and fly again tomorrow. Change prop to APC 20.5x14E prop. Move 850 LiFe battery from behind the firewall to behind the flight packs. Move the flight packs forward more. Increase the wing incidence to 6 degree's positive. Recheck the Stab incidence. Download the datalog from the CC ESC. Flight time was 8 minutes, but I did not pay attention to how much I put back into the packs. Cell voltages were about 3.76 each after the flights.

RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
I did put in 5 call yesterday, but no answer. Just like F3A Unlimited...???? How do you run a business and not answer the phone. I've been trying to buy a composite pattern plane from this guy ( for the past two months) but he doesnt call back to answer a couple deciding questions for me. And yes I know he was in a car wreck and off work for a while. The last time I checked a couple thousand dollars was not easy to come buy and to splurge it on a model aircraft is pure luxury. They don't have to sell their planes or answer questions....they have this forum. They give a plane to a pilot with an orange shirt , do a build thread on it, say it's the next best thing since the space shuttle and they sell planes the modern way. Behind a bunch of BS. The only reputable plane is Chads in my mind because he is answering questions and supporting the product. I know nobody gets rich off these planes but if you want to get in the game....you better be in the game.
I agree, not the way to run a business.

RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
How a pattern plane flies is subjective to the flyer. What I think is good setup, you may not like. CG will most definately effect how wing incidence can be set. trimming is a long process. As far as EF goes, I simply called them and the followed up with an email. Why hasn't other people on the forum done this? I do not rely on the information from the forums as I have no idea who the person is nor their level of expertise. Some people I do know and take their advice. So instead of asking questions here and not knowing if the information is right, how about sending an email or make a phone call to EF. www.extremeflightrc.com info@extremeflightrc.com Phone: 770-887-1794

RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
I spoke with EF via email and they addressed some questions. The new rudder/fin configuration according to EF did not change the weight of the aircraft. Their comment back about CG is that the batteries are typically more forward than mine are currently. CG and wing incidence will vary on how you like the feel. On another thread about the Vanquish, the CG range was listed between 180-186mm. 186mm is about on the wing tube. In the trimming process, you have to have the CG right or close.

Another test would a horizontal level flight at 1/2-3/4 power and then pull to idle (off) and see how the plane travels from there.

RE: Extreme Flight Vanquish 2m Build Thread
I agree with the statements about batches of the kit. I am using a Dualsky 6360-12 which is nearly 2 oz heavier than the Torque motor. My tailwheel is the F3A Unlimited tail wheel assembly which is epoxied in place. Even if I used 10 grams of epoxy, that far back would result in needing more nose weight. My 1700 LiFe rx pack is as far forward as it can be and I still moved my batteries forward to get the CG about 180mm. I plan on pulling the 1700 for a 850 LiFe, saving 1.5 oz and maybe the Falcon v2 prop which would save 2 oz over the APC 20x13E prop, but then the batteries would have to be moved even more forward to compensate. I do not know if the weight issue is caused by the tailwheel installation or the new rudder/fin configuration, but none the less I would be very tail heavy if I had used a lighter weight motor. Any weight savings I can incorporate or change equipment would be up front so I am not happy about the situation. If I have to change the motor for example, I would be forced to use heavier batteries.
