RE: Back to flying
Roo Man, Welcome back to the hobby, glad you got back with very little problems. I've had many of the SSE's as I think they are such a great plane to fly. However, they can be a bit sensitive on the elevator when landing, as you have discovered. Try this. Dial in some dual rates if your radio will do it. For the SSE I usually put about 60% on the low rate side of it. When it comes time to land flip down to the lower rate which will soften the throws on the elevator and tame the plane down a bit when you are landing Ken

Gene, Hmmm, I've built the Ultimate 40 and didn't have any issues with the wood. You may have just had a bum kit. It does happen from time to time, regardless of the kit maker. Ken

RE: Slowpoke 40 ARF
Having campaigned Great Planes to bring back a kit I can tell you exactly what you are going to have to show them. Minnflyer and I worked for almost 3 years to have the Ultra Sport 40 and 60 brought back. The magic number that I was told they wanted to see was 300. We started a thread in the Kit Building forum and showed more than 300 legitimate people that wanted to buy the kit if it was re-released Now, with that being said. I love the SlowPoke. It's one of my favorite planes to fly. I have a Slowpoke 40 that has over 600 flights on it, and it's still going strong. But would I buy a Slowpoke ARF. Never in a million years. Mine is kit built, and any more that I do will also be kit built as well. The Slowpoke 40 kit will be back in stock late November (according to Tower's website). http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXRB44&P=7 If you want a Slowpoke I would recommend bulding one from the kit. It's not a hard plane to build, and you'll probably have a better plane than the ARF is. Ken

RE: Kit Building Cool Tools
I've got plenty of "cool tools", including the saw you referenced here. However, 99% of the time I make cuts with either my Zona razor saw and a miter box, or a razor blade. It's quicker and I get better results than with that power saw IMHO, if you want to make a good purchase for kit building I would recommend a Zona razor saw set and a miter box. I have a place in my tool box for the Zona saw, but it is NEVER there because it doesn't leave my workbench long enough to be put back in the toolbox!! by this I mean that I am always using it when I'm building. As for the Harbor Freight circular saw, it stays in the bottom of my tool box and rarely comes out http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXLJ20&P=ML This would be a much better investment than a circular saw. RE: Flaps
It depends on the plane. Some planes will remain fairly level, and some planes will balloon up a little bit and climb when you apply the flaps. It can also depend on other things such as the speed of the plane when you apply the flaps as well. However, it's is extremely unlikely to nose down the plane. To understand this you have to understand the aerodynamic effect of flaps, and what they do when deployed. The curvature of the top of a wing causes lift as air flows over the curve (very simplistic explanation, but you get the idea). When flaps are dropped it has the effect of extending the back of the wing and increasing the surface of the curvature on the top of the wing. Because of this the wing can produce the same amount, or more lift at any given airspeed. This will allow the plane to continue flying at slower speeds, which can allow it to land at slower speeds (one of the two times flaps are used). The other time flaps are used is on takeoff. The effect of the flaps increased the lift on the wing which allows it to get off the ground quicker, especially when it's heavier at takeoff. This effect is why most (but not all) planes usually balloon up when you apply flaps. When you drop the flaps the wings is now producing more lift at the same speed, which caused it to rise up. Ken

RE: How to handle a difficult pilot!
Ok, most of you will probably notice that a large portion of the posts made this morning are gone. That's because I have gone in and removed them. There are members here (no names mentioned) that want to participate in "recreational arguing" and do so for their own pleasure. I have contacted those member(s) and informed them that those days are over. I told them they are welcome to continue discussing issues in our forums if they can do so in a mature and civil manner, but this junk of late is going to stop. And unfortunately there are many that have fallen into the trap set by those that want to argue for sport. Come on guys, let's face it, if you didn't respond to them they wouldn't have anything to say and would go elsewhere. I'm not trying to embarrass anybody, or bust anybody out, by saying this, but rather I'm trying to point out that it is a two-way street here. And there is blame to go around on both sides in this issue. But, those days are coming to an end here on RCU. If I see "recreational arguing" going on, those posts will be pulled. And unfortunately like today, those that responded to them will get pulled as well. I apologize to all those members that this does not apply to, but unfortunately this has gone on for far too long and this action has become necessary. Hopefully we can quickly move past this and get this forum back on track. Ken

RE: Realflight G5Coming Soon
Ok guys. Time for me to step in here. This thread is getting WAY Off topic. What happens on other forums does not matter here on RCU. Nor is the discussion of what and who controls RCU. RCU does not, nor will we ever, moderate our forums from the guidance of our advertisers. The RCU forums are ran and moderated by the RCU Community Rules, PERIOD. Any post that are removed are done so because they violate those rules. All this bickering and bashing based on what has happened on another forums stops right here and right now. If it does not the person doing such will find themselves spending some time on MS. I'm getting tired of watching this petty bickering going on here over such silly things. Also the personal bashing of other members stops as well. We are in the process of researching if anybody participating in this forum is directly connected to KnifeEdge software, so these discussion will end here as well. We will take any appropriate actions from what we find from our research If there are any members here that feel that they cannot discuss this topic in a civil and mature manner without discussing what I have just said, then I would suggest that they refrain from participating in this discussion. Because if this mess continues there will be members who will spend time on MS. The choice is entirely up to you. For those that are simply trying to discuss this issue and are not involved with what I have talked about I apologize that this was necessary. Unfortunately a few members are trying to ruin it for everybody. But we'll get this subject back on track now. Thanks for everybody's cooperation. Ken

I agree with JohnBuckner, with one addition. Remove the AFS as well. IMHO those are gimmicks used to sell planes and not really helpful or needed for the trainer to successfully train a student. Simply take them off and fly the trainer without them. Ken

KrashKart, Welcome to RCU, and welcome back to the hobby. Please by all means ask any and all questions you might have. We are here to help in any way possible. And please keep up posted on your progress I see from your user data you are from Prescott, Az. I lived there quite a few years ago (close to 35 years or so). We lived not far from Taylor Hicks Elementary School, and my dad worked for the Forest Service there. I miss it as it was a really pretty place to live, from what I remember (I was in the 5th and 6th grade then) Once again, welcome to RCU. Ken

I'm going to go ahead and reopen this thread. However, I am going to put out a warning to this group. The topic of this thread "Realflight G5Coming Soon" and not the discussion of who is and is not affiliated with any software company. Any further discussions of this sort will be removed immediately. In addition, if members continue to try and "bust out" other members by trying to air dirty laundry in this forum they may very well find themselves facing administrative actions. If you members feel that somebody is not properly representing themselves air it in the open forum is not the way to deal with it. Rather, you should contact a Moderator for this forum, or myself, and inform them of the problem and we will deal with it. Ken

Dick, I jumped on Henkel's website and now I think I know why you're having such a hard time finding it. You've misspelled it. The adhesive is Ponal, not Ponel. Here is the product page from their website. http://www.henkel.com/cps/rde/xchg/henkel_com/hs.xsl/1845_COE_HTML.htm?iname=Ponal&countryCode=com&BU=cons_crafts&parentredDotUID=000000022V&redDotUID=000000022V&brand=0000000258 Now with the proper spelling I've found an outlet for it here: http://www.centralofficeservice.com/product_info.php?products_id=1493&osCsid=5b70bee250e3041b1bda345e694393d7 Ken
ORIGINAL: goirish Do you know if my controller RF-3.5 will work with the upgrade? We had a butterfly day yesterday and got several flights in. Even had a cessna 180 land at our field. Grass 560ft long. Was able to lift off before the end of the runway which is surrounded by a cut down bean field.
Gene, According to the info on Tower's site the upgrade will work with everything from RF 3 and up. You use your existing controller with it. I'm going to throw my 2 cents worth in here. I find it funny how people condemn the entire package because of new features in the software. Yes, they may have added combat, online flying with friends, and other features that some say make this more of a game. However, there is nothing that says you have to use them. The core feature of Realflight is still a flight simulator and can be used as such without having to mess with the other parts of the software. There have parts of Realflight 3 and 4 that I have never even clicked on, but I still use the simulator. I use the simulator for keeping muscle memory up on flying during times that I can't get to the field. It's a great tool for practing manuevers, as well as working things out on how to do something without having to burn fuel. I'm glad that with RF 5 they finally realized that there are those of us out here that simply do not want to pay ANOTHER $200 to get the latest version. At XFC this year I voiced this to some of the people from Knife Edge Software and told them I wouldn't upgrade again if they required me to buy the full package. I'd like to think they listened to me as they are now offering an upgrade that only costs me $79. Now I'll gladly pay that!!! Ken
