RE: ZDZ-Amelung
This problem with the ZDZ distributor in Germany is a local issue, the details of which we are not privy to (nor should we be). As the North American distributor, RC Showcase has always received the support we requested from the ZDZ factory and we have no complaint with ZDZ. There is no indication, at all, that "ZDZ is going down the tubes"! RCS has its own service department and has never returned an engine to the ZDZ factory for repair. We were sorry to hear that Herr Amelung has been grievously ill and has to close his doors. However, it is also sad to see that he has decided, for unknown reasons, to take a public "swipe" at ZDZ as he exits the RC business. RE: ZDZ80 RV lost compression
ORIGINAL: Extra300user I recently purchased a 33% Hanger 9 Edge 540 which is already set up to recieve a ZDZ 80 but after reading about these problems I wonder if I should look at other brands of engines to ensure that if I have problems there is a willingness to solve the issue. Sounds like ZDZ are not willing to stand behind what seems to be a known problem since they have redesigned the cooling fins to provide more cooling. What to do?
We are happy to report that there are no "known problems" with the ZDZ 80 RV. The reference you are making to "redesigned the cooling fins to provide more cooling" is not correct. The ZDZ 80 RV is still being made and is currently available for sale. We believe what you are referring to is the NEW ZDZ 80 RV-J ---Super 80--which is a totally new engine that does not share any parts with the ZDZ 80 RV. This engine does put out more power than the ZDZ 80 RV (300-500 more rpm !). There are thousands of the ZDZ 80 RV still flying around the worlds today. The 80 RV-j Super 80 was developed to answer the call from our customers for "MORE POWER!". ZDZ will continue to release new designs in the years to come, taking advantage of technology and process improvements. In fact ZDZ has recently improved its engine warranty from 2.5 years to 3.5 years. This is a result of their faith in the high quality of the products they are manufacturing. Very simply it sounds like the engine has overheated. Typical CHT should range from 190-220F. If the piston has melted down at the exuast port, it has overheated. Best Regards,

RE: Super Flying King twin-engined version
Finally! Sunday Oct 02, 2005: First flight of my (David Garrison's) twin Super Flying King! Long time in coming but well worth the wait. She flew perfectly...take off roll at 1/3 throttle was about 100 feet (no flaps). Andy Kane was the test pilot and managed to do : loops, spins, knife edge passes, one half a rolling circle, tried a torque roll but only managed to hang her on the props for awhile; (any one know if it is possible to troque roll a twin?) The SFK twin flies like a (big) pussy cat but is capable of doing alot more! See pics below. Andy also flew it in formation with an airliner coming in for a landing at Dulles International. Those twin large gas engines sounded WONDERFUL! The DCRC club members voted the SFK Twin "a KEEPER!" Super Flying King TWIN first flight!
After many delays my SFK Twin flew for the first time yesterday. Specs: 41.5 pounds 2ea ZDZ 40 RV gas engines with 16 oz. tanks. Multiplex Royal EVO 12 radio system. Take off roll @ 1/3 throttle was about 100 feet. First flight was made by Andy Kane. Andy manged to squeeze in : half of a rolling circle, a knife edge pass, a high speed photo pass, two spins and assorted other stuff all while I held my breath....and then he flew in formation with an airliner on its way to landing at Dulles International! Three flights were made and the SFK Twin was acclaimed "a KEEPER".. Very stable and docile, but very capable of more than flying in a straight line.. Andy tried a torque roll, but only managed to hang it on the props...next time he says he will torque roll it! This plane has LOTS of power. We will get your engine running. We have sold thousands of these engines and they do not require electric starters , nor do they need to be modifed to a reed induction (why do that and lose the advantages of a rotary valve? If a reed set up was better, why would ZDZ install a rotary valve ? to be different?, because it costs more than a reed valve?, because.......? We start ZDZ engines EVERY day and if one does not start using the following technique, we find out what is wrong and fix it so it will start easily: 1) choke closed, throttle open completely, ignition OFF: 3-5* easy flips of prop 2) choke open , throttle open completely, igniton OFF: 3-5 easy flips of prop 3) choke open, throttle to high idle, ignition ON, 95% of time it will start with ONE flip of the prop! *depends on engine and fuel setup David Garrison RC Showcase ZDZ, Roto and RCS Gas engines www.rcshowcase.com
ORIGINAL: racer8297 Hi all, Thanks for all the input. RE: Super Flying King Twin
Update: ALL MOST READY! I got to the point where it was time to run up the engines and check out my radio set up for controling the two engines, so I brought it down to the RC Showcase facility for Mike Dooley (the master builder and engine guru) to give it a look over and run the engines for the first time. Mike made some adjustments to my throttle setup and in short order had the ZDZ 40s humming along . We fiddled with the trims on each engine to get them running in sync. Wow, what a sound when they are running full throttle! Mike made some cooling and air intake suggestions that I will do . I had consider these but thought, nah, it will be ok, There is something about hearing someone else voice the same concerns that makes it easier to take action...OH wellthe mods will only delay the maiden flight by a week or so. I have a Multiplex 12 channel system installed (Hitech Servos), but only ended up using nine channels. It is a lovely radio system and has all the programming bells and whistles to keep anyone happy for a long time. A synthesized TX and RX along with a scanner in the TX make this Multiplex radio system the best that I have seen, especially for the price. Back to the TSFK. It weighs in at 41.2 pounds with full gas tanks. Each ZDZ 40 has its own 16 oz tank. The ZDZ 40 is pretty stingy with fuel so I expect 20 minutes of flight time. Bruce Tharpe (the design and kit maker) thought that the SFK twin version would come out tail heavy and it did , but not by much; I had to add only 1.25 pounds of lead in the nose. I will post pics when she is flown for the first time. David Grrison RC Showcase

So, I sent them the engine a couple of days ago. I hope to hear something by the end of the week. Yes, I did buy the engine used. RE: zdz80 muffler pressure
No muffler pressure is required with any ZDZ, Roto or RCS gas engines. A two line system is all that is required: one to vent the tank, and one to the carb which is eqipped with a fuel pump. If desired, one can use another line for a dedicated fill line instead of tapping into the fuel into the carb with a T or Y connector. David Garrison RC Showcase

We install them in the location where the brass name plate is on the crankcase. The rear mounting plate has to be removed prior to drilling so one can clear out the drilling chips. See pics ... I am using Ultracote , LOTS of it..... Just the outer panels and some trim to do. All radio gear, engine stuff is installed. I am using two rcv'rs, one in the wing for the ailerons, flaps and throttle (two) servos, chokes are manual, and one in the fuselage for the rudder and split elevators. I have followed the sage advice from many twin pilots and installed a gyro on the rudder servo.
