RE: [Deleted]
Three pages of utter nonsense. No one even tried to help this poor guy. The utter lack of civility and respect in this thread is shocking to say the least. In my own humble opinion, there are a few members here who seem to be unable to contribute anything of value to this community. And in fact, might even have discouraged one or more people away from the hobby. It saddens me to no end to know that I share a hobby with people that seem to have no remorse for behavior such as this. I would like to extend my apology to the Original Poster of this thread, that we mods let this get so out of control. I have unlocked the thread, as well as cleaned up all the erroneous posts, in the hope that someone who has a bit more maturity can answer your question. Rob

RE: is this a clutch problem
Most likely a clutch shoe spring broke. Happens all the time, especially as the shoe starts to wear the spring can actually ride the bell.

RE: mybackyard track....after the rebuild
just curious how you do the cement trick. I have heard you press on some cement onto the jump face, then wet and let it dry. Sounds interesting once i finally get our stupid soil packed
One way that works is to mix up a batch of 1/3 cement and 2/3 dirt. Mix well with water so its a goopy enough to form the jump. What ever jump face you are making, should be partially formed already. Make sure its really wet before you apply the dirt/cement mixture. Then, once you have finished the jump face you will likely need to water a few times during the day to keep the jump from cracking. More if its a really hot and dry day. A pick axe, or a skid steer might be needed to remove the jump when you want to change things up though! Edit: VERY nice looking track there. Looks fresh and never run on! Might want to think about some of that orange plastic fencing to catch the odd runaway. One might go forever out there!

RE: Video Card for Video Output on 60
As far as a computer goes, the vid card doesn't care if its a 100" screen or a 10". All that matters is that the video card is capable of resolutions that are compatible with the TV in question. The video card does not supply any power to a tv or monitor, it just sends a signal. As stated, 1080P is 1920x1080 so if that is one of the options you already have in your video settings, you'll be fine. The VGA/SVGA cable that you use now is more than capable at delivering an HD signal, so you don't have to have HDMI. Internal Blu Ray burners for PC's are down to less than $200 now so it's also probably the cheapest way to go. Not sure on the audio through HDMI on a vid card. Normally, an HDMI cable from a DVD player or DVR etc does carry an audio signal. But I don't think you will get one out of the HDMI from any Video card. I could be wrong though.

RE: Revo Differential Help Needed
A differential of this type cannot 'slip' as a standard RC slipper will. Nor will it 'bark' as a ball diff can. Based on your description I am guessing the mesh is off a bit on the ring and pinion. Or, somehow the stress from hitting the incline is torquing the case and throwing off the mesh. Could also be a broken gear in the diff too I guess.... or a cracked case that only becomes noticeable on an incline, thereby throwing off the mesh? Try taking out the diff, leave the input and output shafts on. Now turn the input shaft while holding the output shafts and see if you can find out where the lack of resistance is. Putting in thicker oil will help keep it from 'diffing out.' But it will only be really noticeable if one of the tracks were to be off the ground. I'm guessing that doesn't happen very often in a vehicle like that! Thicker oil will also make the turning radius wider. If it were me, I'd probably just throw a bit of lithium grease in there as it seems that you would want as much differential action as possible.

RE: New User Name???
In the early 90's when I first signed up for NTN Trivia at my local watering hole I chose RacerX. When I started visiting forums this decade, I used that moniker. When I got here, that name was taken so I chose what I have now. And in fact I like it even better than RacerX, so now all my forum user names are RCtruckRacer. I still can't believe I was able to snag this name!!

RE: Old Dale is trying his hand with a Micro Heli... Dale - 0 Heli - 2
The CX's, or probably any of the counter-rotating dual-rotor copters, are much more stable than the singles. But that stability comes at the cost of maneuverability. It's an OK learning copter, gets you used to the hand-eye coordination needed when you upgrade to a single rotor. I like my CX, and I still fly it occasionally. But I personally did not feel it was the right one for me. It needs to be flown indoors as even a small breeze will move it. And as I said, its not particularly nimble. I found it was only marginally helpful at learning to fly - but they are fun! If you really enjoy the CX, fly it often and save up your money for one of the larger models, like say a T-rex 600. 22 volts & brushless is the only way to go! I know a guy that has a .90, and it's one awe inspiring flying machine. But I can fly the brushless almost anywhere without bothering anyone.

RE: Why are radio control hobby people elitists?
I've found that, in situations of over-policing, what is actually often going on is that the mods are trying to create work for themselves in order to justify their continued existance (as mods).
You can't be serious... Personally, I would much rather be able to come in to RCU and only have to worry about some foreign company making accounts to spam the boards with adds. You do realize that all of the moderators are volunteers? Its such comments that make me want to go back to just being a member here. I have no desire to have police the membership. In fact, I find it completely distasteful. I have much better things to do with my time than delete/edit posts with insults, name calling, and any number of off color remarks made towards members, manufacturers, races, religions etc etc. Are radio hobbyists elitist? You bet. When someone that makes $25K a year has $2000 into an RC and someone says some other RC is much better (or the one they have sucks), they are going to defend their purchase, and with much emphasis. Even to the point of attacking other similar makes/models/brands. As stated, its human nature. However, I find it just as illogical as the author of the linked blog. Now, in regards to the general behavior in forums, I don't find RC forums to be any different than fishing forums, computer gaming forums - any internet forums for the most part. People say things on blogs and forums that they would never say out loud in public. More often than not if they did the result would be a physical confrontation. So why it is that some people think that its socially acceptable to say these things in a forum is also beyond my comprehension. But, that is also why forums need moderators. Without them, most forums would be an anarchistic mess. But, that's just my opinion and I could be wrong.

RE: Track Insurance
The reason I say a business plan should be your priority is because you have to have one to file the paperwork for the Non profit, LLC or whatever. To be perfectly honest, I don't know quite enough about it to say with authority what exactly needs to be in it. I must suggest going to an attorney. You may even be able to find a business that has para-legals to help you with this. That will lower the costs considerably. I have seen our club's Business Plan (we have a 501c non profit tax ID #, which sounds like what you want/need) and its not much. But I really can't remember what was on it. Club by-laws, member requirements, Articles of Incorporation, Officer list... I think it was only 1 page with a few attachments. It sounds like a huge undertaking, but its really not too bad. Especially if you have someone to help you - like an attorney or a legal forms company. At least make some calls about it, you might be able to find a place that will help you do everything yourself on the cheap!

RE: Track Insurance
First, your overall basic business plan. You do have one don't you? If not that should be your priority. If you can afford it, get an attorney's office to do it for you. Most won't charge more than $250. It sounds like you might need their advice anyway, as they will be able to tell you specifically what would be best for you in your particular situation: LLC, Non-profit, C corp, etc. If I remember correctly, your premiums might vary widely depending on what you are too. From a private insurer anyway. How many people are we talking about? Will you hold any scheduled events, or will it just be a free for all place to bash? My guess is that the city would be less happy with an unsupervised playground than your standard race track that holds regular club events. But, I obviously can't say for sure. But those are some of the things they will want to know. Your business plan (needed to form a C corp, LLC or even a Non profit) should answer most any questions that the council will have. In fact, the closer that is to being true, the more likely they should be to approve it. If it were me, I wouldn't even consider a venture like this without consulting an attorney. They are the best CYA insurance you can buy. I realize this is supposed to be a small deal, but you already mentioned one biggie - what if someone sues you. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, so the saying goes. EDIT: P.S. I am SO jealous. My club might be losing our track and we may be looking for a new home. We would SO be all over that if we lived near you!!!

RE: Best XXL body
I'd love to see someone that has a wing mounted up to the shock tower (AKA muggified type) see how LST2 bodies fit. That extra chassis length might mean no more cutting bodies - but would that mean at the expense of poorly fitting wheel cut outs etc? Anyone with a XXL w/wing and LST2 bodies that can post a pic? And not the Losi wing adapter, bodies all fit fine with those. But I don't like the style of those - I much prefer bolting the wing on rather than securing with body clips. I'll be doing a conversion once a carbon fiber main chassis plate is available. I'll be bummed if I have to run stock bodies. I just painted up a new J concepts body for my LST2, sure would like to use those.

RE: Ripping up my diffs
ORIGINAL: HPI_Savage_RC You shouldn't be stripping LST diffs under ANY circumstances. Every LST owner on this forum has told me that they don't break, so I don't know what the problem is??????????? Maybe you should try using Savage diffs. They use aluminum cases and hardened steel cross pin supports after all.
I certainly do not remember telling you this. And I bought an LST back in July of 2004 (2005? mr memory here...) when they first came out. Talk about diff problems - the plastic cases failed almost immediately. But today I realize that I had the brakes adjusted so it would do stoppies. If I had the brake dialed back a bit, no doubt the cases would have lasted a bit longer. But still, the aluminum cases are a must and that was one of the upgrades on the LST2. The real issue came about sometime around 2007 or so when Losi parts either were made by a new company or a different plastic formula was used. Parts looked different - the color was a shade or two off from what they used to be and some parts started coming on trees when they didn't used to. That was when I started having problems with the diff housings. The plastic used was not as durable. Or at least that's the way it seemed to me. One of the reasons that the Savage is able to withstand heavy abuse is that it is good at flexing on impact. This is a purposeful design that mitigates the stress from the impact across multiple parts. However, the trade off is gear mesh. Flexing changes the mesh and can propagate the demise of different gears in the drivetrain. Like everything in R/C (and life for the most part) its a trade off. Making sure not to hit the brakes or the throttle on impact will help in the longevity of any drivetrain, but especially so on the Savage. Finally, it is not copacetic to go into any particular forum and antagonize the users therein. I have no idea why it is you feel the need to be so confrontational, but it needs to stop. And this goes for anyone here that might feel like retaliating in the Savage forums. This is just not acceptable behavior. As an MT racer, I feel like we should all be supporting each other. Our class is dying a quick death and it is my biggest disappointment in all of RC. So to see this useless bickering really pushes my buttons. I'll be happy to lock the thread if people feel like they cannot refrain from antagonizing each other. Rob

I had the same problems on my LST2. The housing would give way where the pins sit and that throws the mesh completely out of whack. This would happen as often as just one 5 min qualifier. I ended up buying some aluminum housings, but they never sealed perfectly so when the HD ones came out I jumped on them. They are perfect, perfect, perfect. I almost forget about my difs now.

RE: Fuel coming out of exhaust? Kyosho GX-15 Tuning
You may not be able to do a thing about this. With just a single needle, it seems likely that fuel is blowing through on idle which you won't be able to adjust out. Besides, a little fuel coming out the stinger isn't a big deal - from a performance standpoint anyway. The needle leans out the mixture when you turn it in (clockwise) as what you are doing is limiting the amount of fuel delivered. Be careful leaning it out, as if you get it too lean you will toast the engine. Start the R/C up and get it good and warm - run it around for half a tank or so. Now, from a dead stop do a full throttle run and pay attention to the pitch of the engine. Lean out the needle by a very small amount: 1 hour (looking at the needle as if it were a clock) or 1/12 of a full turn. Now run around for a few seconds, then do another full throttle run. Did the pitch of the engine go up? It should because as you lean out the mixture, you will gain RPMs. You can continue to lean out the mixture, doing full throttle runs every time you do, until it stops going up in RPM's. At that point, richen up your mixture (one hour, 1/12 of a turn) by turning the needle counter-clockwise, because when tuned for max RPM's the engine is slightly too lean for good longevity. As your engine does not have a low speed needle, it will likely be a bit on the rich side on idle. Single needle engines usually run rich on the bottom end from design. It helps prevents premature death from being too lean. Therefore, you probably won't be able to completely tune out fuel coming out the pipe. Hope that helps. Rob

RE: pro driver salaries
So, Are we talking 100%'ers or Factory Team drivers? I know some 100%'ers. Tires, parts, fuel - everything they want/need for free. The chassis sponsors also give them a per diem and travel expenses. One of the nicest, and most knowledgeable of them always seems to find a way to stay with someone for free, usually in exchange for pit/set up help. When he stays with me I feed him too. [:D] In effect, he gets paid to race since he rarely spends any of his Per Diem, and usually doesn't have to spend his travel money either. All in all, I'd imagine it ends up being about $100 - $200 per day. He is able to race a couple times per month, so I'd guess his income is supplemented by at least $10K per year. A pretty good bonus for anyone really. Now, the guys you read about in the magazine will be a different story. Ever think about how many of them change teams every year? Its all about the money. Not only do they get the travel expenses and Per Diem, but they also draw a salary. Most of them are also on the R & D teams, but their 'job' is to test out designs on the track and suggest improvements. And when you read about one of them going to another team, its because they got a raise. They have to be paid a decent amount of money, or one of the other teams will snatch them up. I have a friend whose daughter is (or was last I heard) dating Ryan Cavalieri. Ryan drives a REALLY nice car, and I know he pulls a very nice salary. As will all of the top factory team drivers. But being one of these guys is nearly an impossible task. You have to be unbelievably talented. Like Jared Tebo going into his third race ever and getting a podium spot in the Silver State... [8|] As a guess, I'd say the bottom Factory Team driver is still making $30 - $40K a year. The top ones likely get a very low 6 figure salary, or near there.

OS VZB V-Spec. And lose the starting system so you can get a bump box. And yes, a properly set up LST2 will be just as competitive as a Revo at the track. If your track has an MT class anyway. [:(]

RE: good racing monster truck
The MT class is a dying breed at most tracks. They are harder to get around the track fast when compared to a truggy, and you have a MUCH more limited choice of trucks to run. The Revo and LST2 are really the only choices. I have seen Savages that have been highly modified that do very well on the track, but the amount of mods done to them were pretty crazy. If you can find a Revo Platinum, you get a racer right out of the box. I would strongly suggest looking at a truggy if you want to race, unless you have a strong MT turnout at your track.

RE: Should Traxxas make a 1/8th buggy?
OK, first - please keep the discussion civil. There's no need for name calling. My take? I have no issues whatsoever with Traxxas trying to get into the racing market. Whether it be an entry level model or high end kit, it wouldn't matter one bit. No one RC company has more advertising dollars than Traxxas, so much the better for the racing community. Most track regulars have seen a decrease in entries at their track, and anything to bring up those numbers is a good thing. And no worries at all about all the added entries being new racers. I can't see how a large influx of new racers is going to affect any seasoned racer. They have to out qualify you, and if they can then they belong in whatever main they made. As far as making a 1/8th buggy or truggy for the non-racing crowd... if it sells, why not? If by chance someone gets into racing because of it, then everyone wins. Those that don't will never be seen by track rats like me, so it seems like a non-issue. As far as SHOULD they make one? I couldn't possibly say one way or the other. That should be left up to the marketing, R&D and board members of Traxxas. All IMO of course. Rob

RE: thunder tiger silver fox
New in the box, you might expect as much as $1500 for that buggy. As it sits, it's not very valuable. Parts are all but impossible to get & are very expensive when they can be found - Look for parts on Ebay, they are $50-$60 for a bag that used to sell for less than $5-$10... Old R/C's are usually only worth a great deal of money when they are new in the box. Still, you never know what someone will pay for something.

RE: Reciever packs how long do they last?
My LST uses approx 250 mah in around 10 mins. That is with a spektrum pro sr3500, and 3 Airtronics 94359's. You might find other electronics that drain a battery a bit less, but with dual steering servo's your sucking more power. I always used to run 2500mah packs on the front shock tower, but since the introduction of 1500 - 1700 mah rx packs I don't feel the need anymore. And I like the cleaner look, and lower COG with the battery below the chassis. I also have never run failsafes (spektrum rx's do have one built in though). In the limited experience I have racing with a few thousand people over the course of the last 5 years, I have never seen a runaway that could have been stopped by a failsafe. It's always a broken battery, broken wire, disconnected connector etc. A good strong throttle return spring is your best friend.

RE: Which LST2 One-Way Bearing wears the most?
ORIGINAL: impalapolicepack hi sorry to use your tread to ask my question but i have a question related to the 2speed one-way bearing everytime i go out with my truck(lst) i need to burn a couple tanks before the tranny shift into 2nd seems like it get stuck into 1st gear until it gets hot once its hot and shifting, it works great all day long any idea what can cause this ? thanks
The two speed is dependant upon RPM's to shift. If you are running a bit rich, it will take a while for the engine to warm up enough to get the RPM's neccessary to shift. The other issue is that the housing probably needs to be cleaned. Dirt, wear, oils etc all hinder its performance. I'm going to hazard a guess that you have both things going on. A tune that is a bit rich (nothing wrong with that as long as the engine gets up to operating temps) and a dirty two speed housing. Also scruff up the shoes a bit so they grab the housing better.
