RE: Sig Smith Miniplane build
RICA1 My "Smith" is retired and the Super Decathlon is on injured reserves. During the years that my “Smith was in action, it had three different engines bolted on it. K&B 40 – OS 45 FSR (even had a pipe for a while) and as seen in the picture of post 756, the “Smith and the Super Decathlon have Super Tigre 51’s with custom built mufflers.

RE: Sig Smith Miniplane build
I was rummaging through some old photos and found this one of my Smith along side a Great Planes Super Decathlon that I helped my son build. Even though this shot is in my gallery I don't think I ever posted it in this thread.....Picture was taken November of 2009.

RE: Tower Hobbies Uproar 40 build
Stu I hate to read that old faithful took a dive. I remember how much you use to write about it being your favorite to drag to the field. That is a pretty slick picture of it. the prop must be really buzzing in that shot because you can't even see the normal prop disk. Kind of like the thing is just hanging in the air. Gene Thanks for the plug there. I still hope to get some more video of these three planes before they are destroyed or wore out.

You being a member of the WACO brotherhood and all - I would have figured you found the instruction by now. That thread has it all if it has to do with a PICA WACO and then some. Anyway, I have attached one version of the instructions for you or anyone else looking for them. The other file I have is too big to upload on here.

RE: Top-Flite Contender
Anthony, You have made the Contender look good......I would not be surprised if Top Flight sales a few more because of your plane and thread. I can tell you if my plate (build queue) were empty, I'd consider buying one after seeing yours. It looks as good in the air (better) than on the ground.[8D] With a .61 two stroke and a pipe that thing would get on down the road.

RE: Sig Smith Miniplane build
ORIGINAL: rc_wings Here is a video of the SMP in action. Was recorded on my little point and shoot camera mounted on the rim of an old ball cap...call it the Cap Cam. Was more a test to see how it would work as never seem to have a reliable camera operator handy. Now that I know it works, will try to get some better footage. The SMP is pretty fast, so going to change the prop from a 10x7 to an 11x6 and see how the Tigger .51 handles it and should slow the little Bipe down a bit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrKbLFC74_k Marko
Marko, I watched the CAPCAM video. It turned out better than I would have imagined. That is cool. Now if you could just setup some kind of zoom control.[:)] Is the spacewalker yours too? [8D] If you get a chance - try a 12X6 prop on your ST51 and Smith. I am pretty confident you’ll find it to be a good combination. Here is some info I have put together over the last few years on the ST51. When reading this keep in mind I use home made no nitro fuel. In fact my fuel is quite simple 19% sig castor oil and 81% methanol. This test done 7/11/11 was performed with the engine in a Tower Hobbies Uproar and is only showing rpm’s with out all of the details of the write up. To summarize the write up I did - the 12X6 (reference being a wood prop) is the go to prop on the ST51. If your looking for speed 11X7.5 is great. The lower pitch props tend to increase the prop torque or “P factor effect noticeable. 12X6 Zinger 10,300-3400idle 12X5 Zinger 10200 - 3820 idle 12X4 Zinger 11,800 3850 idle 11X7.5 Zinger 11,000 3500 idle My results were the same on my Smith. I even tested the Smith with a 13X4 and even though the speed was perfect, the torque generated from the hi thrust could make the little Smith a bit more squirrelly than I liked in a given situation. I think I wrote about some of that in this thread somewhere. In a 02/19/09 test I had one of my Super Tigre 51’s mounted in a home made engine test stand that I could measure thrust on. RE: Top-Flite Contender
ORIGINAL: WacoNut Hi Rick, I will be having some fun with this one. I had to mow grass when I got home from work today so it is slowing me down a bit[;)]. It has been years since I have covered a plane with Monokote and I am going to need some pointers. I will be doing a Red,White and Blue pattern with overlapping colors. What is the best way to seal the edges of the monokote? I will be applying some of the trim parts with windex and little heat. Is monokote trim solvent best or acetone? Later!! Anthony
Anthony, You have outdone yourself once again......I fell a sleep for six days and you have about finished the thing. I have not tried the acetone yet for applying trim. I have successfully used monokote trim solvent for doing narrow strips of monokote to form trim around the windows of a Decathlon. It even worked around the windshield. But I had to cut the pieces curve to fit - obviously since I was not using heat to stretch and shrink. I have had some success using the Windex trick for larger trim pieces. But heat is still need to keep the stuff on. even with the Windex to squeegee out the air I still ended up with those pesky little bubbles that needed poked with a pin. Anyway...your plane is looking as good as I figured it would. Looks like you got the covering stretched around the lower nose well.

RE: Sig Smith Miniplane build
Just for the information[;)].....because this plane is small......... you can use smaller servos for the ailerons, if you are using two servos. It is possible to get two metal gear sevros with plenty of strength that will actually weigh less than one standard servo. So, two servos can be done with a weight loss.[8D] I would certainly locate the servos where you did not have to cut the spar. For the record I built my Smith with one servo using bellcranks and it worked flawlessly for years. Albeit the set up had a little more slop than a two servo set-up.

RE: Tower Hobbies Uproar 40 build
Well, I crashed the purple uproar #3 yesterday farting around in the wind at low altitude[X(]. Why am I writing about it? I was surprised I did not destroy this thing. If you followed the thread you know I put more holes in these puppies than I could count[8D]...... A friend said “that’s a five minute repair with five minute epoxy. He is not far from the truth. It hit hard on the nose from about 15 feet or so and flipped/cart wheeled and or whatever at least once. It hit hard enough that the rudder pull/pull cables either stretched or pulled out of the ball links. But not so hard to bust the spinner. Smashed the leading edge sheeting a bit on one side but did not kill the end rib. I truly thought a hit like this would bust the fuse in half and at least bust the wing up. Anyway take it with the grain of salt I have served it with. I'll glue it back together and fly it some more[:)].

RE: Tower Hobbies Uproar 40 build
I think Tower Hobbies has signed the death warrant for the Uproars by increasing their price to $70[:o]. In late 2009 I bought all three of my kits for $45 each. That was list price and does not include super saver discount. The wood is not that good of quality, the kits are die cut, and come with nothing but a wire landing gear that is prone to bending. For $45 that was all good. For $70 they need to be laser cut with a nice aluminum landing gear and some hinges and control horns along with motor mounts. For the same $70 you can buy a 45 [link=http://www.sigmfg.com/cgi-bin/dpsmart.exe/ProductsV6.html?L+Sig+paje8883+_Ddp_5fSearch1_02a01RCSigKobra_01Search_02Index_01Menu_02CatProd_01Thumb_02Kits_20_2d_20Sport_20Models_01]Sig Kobra[/link] You could get a Sig Cub for $85 or Clipped wing Cub $83 If you really want a kick around fun fly type of plane build one from plans for less than half. RE: Sig Smith Miniplane build
ORIGINAL: rc_wings ............Man does this little gem like to snap! Spins are just too much fun upright and inverted. Recovery is predictable and no nasty tendencies observed yet..............., this one is high on the fun factor scale!!! ......

ORIGINAL: Rv7garage I agree- this little Smith was made for tossing around. Great snaps, also good hammerheads and loops.
I loved doing a Lomcevak (at least a simulated lomcevak) [8D]with my “Smith. Most time I cheated at how I got into the maneuver. [;)] The proper way in, so I am told, is from a 45° knife-edge up line. If you are on the right side ... jam in all of your left rudder – full right ailerons and full down with lots of throttle. I usually went into it from a quick 45 ° upright up line-simultaneously cut throttle to about half-jam the sticks for a inside snap (full up, full right aileron, full right rudder) Then trying to time one half a snap –jamming in left rudder (from right), full throttle, full down (from up) leaving ailerons at full right. If all goes well you will get the coolest tumble (at least before 3D came around) you ever saw. The plane seams as though it stops moving and the tail simply flips over the top and around as if the thing was thrown like flicking a twig. Another thing this plane looks cool doing is a old fashioned tail slide. But, it is hard to hold you mouth right to get it to work..... I was successful at getting a few slides that were good for at least 10 foot or so. I needed to have pretty much no wind to pull them off. It just looks so cool falling strait down with the nose pointed strait up.

RE: Sig Smith Miniplane build
ORIGINAL: Rv7garage .................. I need to attach brace wires to my empennage; it seems as though my horizontal stab is slightly out of line with the wings, which makes the plane want to skew in a loop (or anytime I use a decent amount of elevator). Rather than remove and re-seat the entire empennage, I figure I can use bracing wires to tweak it straight............
RV7 - FLYCFII - After all these years of chatting I still don't know a name to call you. Anyway, You know, my "Smith" also had a tendency to try and roll out of the loops a little bit. Just enough to corkscrew them a bit. Outside loops were even worse than the inside loops. You may remember that I braced up the tail on mine as well. I never could get rid of that effect without using the rudder and/or ailerons. I noticed when I started using the 12 and 13 inch props it seamed to get worse. Maybe my imagination..I don't know..[:o]...I suspect it is an aerodynamic characteristic of this little plane. That is also one of the reasons I suggest to not overdo the control surface travels on this plane.

RE: Tower Hobbies Uproar 40 build
Last Sunday (June 10th) I had the chance to take a couple of the Uproars to Temple Texas for a Fun Fly Competition. I took #3 – Purple and #2 – Red. The red one went along as a back up in case I dorked the other plane but also to show I could build and cover a decent looking plane. The purple still looks like crap....I did get a couple of complements on the red one....[:)] Anyway, only seven pilots registered to fly in the competition. The wind was a bit stiff but manageable. The routines in this fly-in were heavily favored in “spot landing ability. Long story shortened I brought home the trophy for first place. The Uproars are just a blast to fly in this kind of stuff. Love it. I also have to say: the group of guys in Temple were great to go fly with. Me and one other member of my club drove out there and they treated us as if we flew with them every Sunday. Had a blast....

RE: Sig Smith Miniplane build
Dope Fiend, It’s good to read you have decided to give your Smith another go. Even though mine is fully retired - I could never get rid of it. It has too much sentimental value for me[8D]. No doubt, even a few ounces should help on the weight. I hope you’ll write about the differences once you get it back in the air. Marko, What did you end up using for paint? Sure looking forward to finished pictures and flight report. Maybe even some video[;)]???? Anyone that is interested, I have probably written about this before, but…….[:-]One piece of advice I have on this plane is -control surface travel. These days most of us set up control surfaces with extreme travels. But the Sig “Smith has little appreciation for that[X(]. Ailerons as much as you can get - no problem. Some differential is good too. Set the elevator and rudder up as the book says. For the Rudder use a dual rate for takeoff and landing. In fact I used low rate for all surfaces on takeoff and landing. For taxiing, yes, you’ll want the rudder and elevator on hi rate. But, when it’s time to take off - use the low rate until you’re in the air. If you use the rudder when landing, same thing - low rate will smooth things out. Once on the ground and slowed flip back to hi for taxiing. With the control throws and balance point listed in the book this plane will be capable of snap rolls and lomcevaks like you want believe. I think I have an example or two in at least one of the videos I posted of mine. Take my ramblings with the grain of salt it is served with and good luck[:)].

RE: My first plan-build, have I missed something or did AirAge misprint?
Curt, At 61 paper is not going to shrink 2 1/4". It looks like a printing problem to me[8D]. As in a scaling problem due to selections on the printer properties. It was most likely printed under default/automatic selections and not forced to be 1:1. If the scaling were inconsistent (in some places and inch equaled an inch and some places not) it would suggest paper slip while printing. However from your picture and statements it just looks like the plans were printed at less than 1:1 (about 96.3% actually) I feel you are right in asking them (MAN Plans) to have a look and replace. I hope they supply you with a reprint and if they do please post it here for all of us to know they are customer oriented and stand behind getting it right. Good Luck.

RE: Tower Hobbies Uproar 40 build
Gene You know, I think one of my uproars would make an excellent electric powered fun fly machine. But I have not really thought about converting one. I have yet to graduate to electrics that size. With the right battery I could get the wing loading even lower than it is right now and still maintain a decent flight time. As you have seen in some of the videos, my uproars do fly very light and I love it[8D]. They will launch off the ground with ZERO roll out[:D]. Steve, Without a doubt the OS46LA would be perfect for one of these planes. If you read through the thread you’ll see that there are many guys that use that engine on this plane. Also, if you read the thread, I hope you enjoy it. There are a few crazy experiments documented throughout. My intent was to go for it and see what all really works and or how far I could go. Then share with everyone that reads this thread. I actually learned a lot about building light with these planes. And- my planes are still flying-so I reckon I did not go too far…..[:-] I think this design Uproar/Dazzler are reasonable popular because of the value….In other words it flies good, it’s easy to build, and the cost is good too. The plane is not a 3D flyer even if you build it light. I believe the tail is too short to be good at that. But, I am not a successful 3D pilot either. It’s also not a pattern plane. None the less it will do some pretty crazy flying. As Gene mentioned this plane is great for all the Fun Fly type of “task oriented flying. It will fly fast and slow right down to nothing. It will turn on a dime. Set-up accordingly it will roll faster than you can count. If I were to build another there is only two things I would do different. One is I would go with a Dazzler style aileron instead of what I did, and I would use a 2 ounce smaller fuel tank because it turns out I would have gotten plenty of flight time. The rudder and elevator modifications are great and the light weight plane and equipment that I ended up with work fine. But I did change out a few servos along the way.

I think I remember you writing about both of the uproar crack ups in your post. Catching that twig for a tree had to be a trip. Flying along and POW! Wings gone..... I have patched a few over the years. Once upon a time I had no choice but to fix them. There was no money to buy replacements. I once had a Flight Line Scooter II that I put three fuses on the wing before finally building an all new Scat Cat. That was in the day when those kits were, I want to say, less than $30.
