RE: WIND,WIND,WIND
Local weather just predicted wind gusts as high as 60 mph by Sunday. Yet another weekend down the drain. Add to the fact we're in a serious drought around here, the fire danger has been incredibly high. Just hope our fire season doesn't end up as bad as last year. Rick

RE: What is the best LIGHTWEIGHT starter?
I understand your need for lightweight, but as has been mentioned already, the Kavan is the lightest weight I know of but needs higher voltage. The link below is for an adapter that allows the use of slide on 18v Makita battery packs. May not be as light as you wanted, but certainly has the power to turn almost anything. It also is surprizingly well balanced. www.afineredgemfg.com Rick

RE: 50cc QB 260 build thread
After two years of sitting in the box, I finally got off my backside and put this plane together. Was very impressed with how easily it came together. Used a Fox 3.2 I had lying around. First flight was deadstick after 45 seconds with downwind landing in muddy pasture. Took about a week to repair and you'd have to look real close to see the repairs. Quite proud of that! Anyway, 2nd test flight was yesterday with another deadstick!!!!! This time got it back to runway with no problems, turned out to be a problem with the spark plug gap. Next two flights were FANTASTIC!!!! Only needed two clicks of right aileron. CG is spot on. This will likely turn out to be my favorite plane. Already thinking of selling off all my smaller stuff. Rick P.S. Thanks to Jim Bennett, Tom Woods, Jim Farris and all my Southside buddies for all the help and prodding to get this project finished.

Hey Steve, when these were first released from Yellow, they were marketed as being grass field friendly. As long as you have a fairly smooth field, it should be fine. Rick

RE: Fixing a scratched canopy
Just did a search of all the forums. Most of the solutions involve using very fine wet sandpaper, followed by either airbrushing or dipping in Future floor wax. Also using rubbing compounds and toothpaste were options.

RE: Bob Cat Copy Falcon 120 Jet
Hey all, just googled Nitroplanes Falcon 120. Got lots of hits, some from German sites . I found a larger pic of the one above showing flaps and retracts. But it doesn't match any of the pictures on the website for Nitroplanes. The pictures they do show don't have flaps and nothing of the undercarriage. Again when I tried calling, the lady answering could not give me any specifics, I think her only job is to take orders. Jed, just look at the extreme speed on the first page, really no useful info there. Rick

Jed, there is a small thread on this on the extreme speed site. I called the number for the ad, found out it is not set up for retracts. You have to do a bit of re-engineering. Rick

BigBadJon, Please take photos of your retract installation. I too want to modify for retracts eventually. One change I am making is to install separate servos in the rear for the elevator halves. I'll move the battery forward if needed for balance. Rick

RE: Nitro Planes Falcon 120
I called the number on the ad to ask some technical questions. The lady on the other line was nice enough, but had no clue. She kept asking someone behind her for answers. And BTW, when they say optional retracts, that doesn't mean they have retracts; it means YOU have the option of re-engineering for retracts........very misleading. Think I will wait for Mods to come out with his kit. Rick

OK, inquiring minds want to know. Who is this elusive source for 1/10th retracts? I have a G&P pusher F-18 that could benefit from scale retracts. Was thinking of using Yellow's, but would like something more scale. BRG, Rick

I am definitely interested, might finally get me off my rear-end and finish a few projects. Mugen can tell you how slow I've been. Really enjoyed the Broken Arrow meets back in the day, was where I saw my first turbine on a test bed. Never forget the sound that first time. Rgds, Rick

RE: G&P Sales f-18 Hornet
I have one of these waiting in the wings to be built. Planning on using a Webra speed 80 with tuned pipe. My question which I have asked before but never got a response, can the front housing on the Webra be turned 90 degrees allowing it to run in the reverse direction? I was told this was possible by 'someone', but have never seen any discussion about it. If this is true, it certainly opens the possibility of more props to use. Thanks, Rick

RE: The People You Run Into....
Since we're telling stories, I have to tell you mine. A long time ago, more than I care to think about, I was in the Navy as a hospital corpsman. I was stationed at Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in Oakland. Most of the time, patients would pass through the SICU in a whirlwind fashion, not staying long enough to get to know. However, one older gentleman was admitted for what turned out to be an extremely long stay. A very quiet soft spoken man who felt embarrassed to "bother" anyone. One of his family told me he used to be a pilot. I grew up in the Air Force, been around planes all my life, so I started talking to him about his past. Turns out that this man has a place in history. His name was John Macready. He was a test pilot during or just after WW1. He also was one of two pilots that made the first transcontinental flight. I think he appreciated that someone had similar interests and was willing to listen to his stories. I'll never forget him, because he became more than just another patient passing through. Rick

RE: G&P Sales f-18 Hornet
I have one of these waiting to be built. My plan was to use a Webra speed 80 with a helicopter head for improved cooling. The pipe would run up through fuselage and exhaust dumped through a 90 degree bend out the bottom of the fuselage. Or should I rig a pipe like what is done with the Combat Models jets? Also, I was told that the front housing of the Webra could be turned 90 degrees allowing it to run backwards. Is this all that it needs, i.e., no issues with the timing ports? It would allow me more flexibility in choosing props. Thanks, Rick

RE: My F-16 sucks!
Sorry to hear of your problems. Noted that you're in Texas. The past 3 days have set records here in Norman for high temperatures. I wonder if this might not have been a factor. A friend of mine had difficulty with his turbine helicopter not acting quite right when it flew just fine several weeks ago when it was almost 30 degrees cooler. Your difficulties have me thinking of passing up ducted fans too and sticking a turbine in my Yellow single F-18. Good luck with your decision. BRG, Rick

RE: Pilot F-1 alias DJ3 ARF prototype
Hi ET, really interested in this as I'm building a DJ-3 at the moment although somewhat stalled out. I would like to convert retracts to air and make nose steerable. I saw your initial reports of the F-1 and was looking forward to the release. Shame it doesn't look like it will be forthcoming. First, I can't seem to find it on Ebay and secondly what would be your InstaBuy price. Can PM me details if you like. Hope to hear from you. BRG, Rick

World Models GS P-51
Hope everyone can give me some advice. I have the older version W.M. GS P-51. Most of the posts I have pulled up seem to agree that the landing gear are a little weak. I see that some have returned the gear for replacements but most seem to go for aftermarket replacements, specifically the Robarts. Have looked on the Robart site in their gearfinder, they suggest 550RS retracts with the 660 straight struts. Several questions come to mind, first why not the offset struts, is this because of the fit in the wing? And secondly will 90 degree completely retract into the wing? I've looked at Century, they have a complete set that fits this bird, but no pictures or details. Anyone know how good these are? Lastly, what type of retractable tailwheel? I can't seem to find a source for the old Klett, the Robarts seem to be too big (up to 40 pound? ), and does anyone know if the Aerotech would work? And last, really the last, what scale is this bird.........1/5 or 1/6? Thanks, Rick
