RE: Its been a while.
ORIGINAL: BarkingSquirrel Its been a while since I've been here but after a series of absolutely crushing events, I'm trying to get back in the hobby. Heck I don't even have any tanks anymore after loosing them all in a fire, including the Mato Sherman I was given for the small amount that I helped with that project. I miss that one, will never be given a tank like that again :( Anyways since I've been out for a year or two, I got a few questions: 1) What ever happened with that Hooben T-55? I see some posts about a Hooben Elephant. Did the T-55 get canceled or something? 2) Where is everyone getting their HL tanks these days? Still Phil at RCTankWars and Bill at RC Command? 3) I'm now living in Tennessee about 50 miles from where Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia meet. Anyone know of any clubs in a reasonable distance? Thanks.
I remember you from back in 2009! Sorry to hear you lost your tanks in a fire. I'm now having to take a hiatus from this hobby due to bad choices and life circumstances, so I kind of know how that crap goes (as in crushing events). Yeah, the T-55 came and went while you were gone.. Anyway, I remember your screen name and avatar. The Barking Squirrel with the "hair trigger". That squirrel is bad ass! Someday, maybe I'll be back in action too..

RE: Brandenburger Tor - Last Tiger
Last weekend my Tiger became the Peenemünde Tiger. Thrown together with a Night Vision system and a secret "Shockwave" cannon as armament. This strange, but devastatingly powerful cannon, was being developed at Peenemünde under the supervision of Major General Dr. Walter Dornberger. The Shockwave cannon concept, as it was referred to, was intended for installation in new aircraft designs to destroy ground targets without the use of bombs. Unfortunately, powerful and LIGHT enough battery cells had yet to be invented to allow its use in planes as intended. The lone prototype cannon was fitted into the barrel sleeve of a lone, early model training Tiger (in less than 2 days time). Modified "electroboat" batteries, designed for the Type XXI Uboat, were installed in the Tiger instead of 88mm rounds. This strange looking Tiger was so late in arriving on the scene of the final battle in Berlin, that it is suspected that it didn't do much of anything.. Except to be blown up by its crew less than 1 hour after rolling into battle. It is said to have challenged an SU-152, but its highly advanced cannon was defeated simply by placing a piece of opaque tape over the front of the TBU of the invading SU-152. There is no such thing as IFA when being attacked by the Peenemünde Shockwave Cannon.. Apparently, the SU-152 commander wasn't aware of that..

RE: DAK BEYOND DARKNESS
I've been given orders from beyond the grave that ALL German armor must be thrown into the fight Saturday night, including my Sleepy Basket Case of a Tiger. You guys aren't getting off that easy.. One not cobbled together, but thrown together and shaken, not stirred Tiger complete with Peenemunde Night Fighting Cannon will be showing up Saturday night, with its last commander. Darkness indeed will descend upon the DAK field, pray for those who dare to oppose it. This may be my last battle, but I will NOT go quietly..

RE: Brandenburger Tor - Last Tiger
Thanks for checking on that spare track bar Rivet. No hurry on that, as the 1945 Last Tiger build has been temporarily postponed.. Instead I have decided to throw my actual real Last Tiger into the final DAK battle of the season, and what probably will be the final DAK battle for me and my lone Tiger. It will be thrown together tomorrow, rolling into battle wearing only the remaining gray primer that is left on its armored skin. I refuse to quit, and I refuse to let Ethan and the others enjoy this final battle without gracing them with my presence at the field. Being that the 88mm cannon is in no condition right now for firing (it needs its bore cleaned for starters), and that it probably would not be sufficient to allow the tank to survive against all the Russian Armor surely to swarm the field Saturday night, the main armament has been radically changed. By a miracle, I have gotten a hold of plans for a top secret "cannon" that was being developed at Peenemunde at one time during the war. Very high tech and radical weapon, specifically designed for night fighting. Was never actually completed or used in combat back then, but will be this Saturday night for the first time ever. Sevo was working on a special cannon for his Tiger, but this will be far more technically advanced and devastating. A true WunderWaffe if there ever was one. Developed by the most clever scientific minds the SS had in their employment. I sat down examined the plans and started construction of this weapon of mass tank destruction this evening. And so it is.. The FINAL GAME begins..

Mudguards came off, not much more has happened. Last Tiger won't be in the fight this May.. Lucky for the opposition though, as my SS scientists came up with a killer night fighting unit to mount in the cupola. Needs two 8200 mAh LiPoly packs to power the device. Very radical stuff..

RE: Tamiya Super Pershing
Somewhat like Pattoncommander said, this is a model of the production "Super Pershing", not the initial, field up-armored version that actually saw combat in Europe in April of 45. The order for this production version was canceled upon the capitulation of Deutschland in May after 25 or so had been built. I got the photo from some Japanese kid, it is probably bogus, but who can tell. It would be a similar easy, new release, like the Israeli Sherman was. Not so fresh, but easy..

This is Feng's Chief Engineer. He had to handle some technical difficulties that arose during the demonstration. If it were not for his ability to grasp, analyze and resolve the most difficult of technical problems, the Hooben / Arkmodel Elephant's release would probably be postponed for another year. They should have molded this kit in white plastic..

RE: Brandenburger Tor - Last Tiger
Thanks Will. I have already seen that painting before. That artist didn't quite replicate all the details on the tank correctly, for example he depicted it with all the outer road wheels installed, where the tank in the photos is missing the first and last outer wheel on the hull gunner's side. It does look like he tried to reproduce the cammo pattern on the front of the hull as shown in the photos though. He did a three color scheme, like I plan to do. Rivetcounter - Can you help me to identify the type of spare track bar that is mounted on the front of the hull? It looks different than some of the other track bars I have seen on Tigers. Do you perhaps have clearer photos of that specific bar mounted on some other Tiger? I'd like to try to scratch build that particular track bar if I can find some additional reference photos of it. I successfully removed the front mud guards from the tank this evening with a rotary tool.. It's coming along gradually..

RE: Red Oxide Primer Question
No, I do not have any new primer yet. I will obtain some of the Floquil Polly Scale primer, mentioned by Swathdiver, and will spray that with my airbrush. No more rattle cans for me. You can see what happened to my aluminum Schumo gun barrel if you look at my "Last Tiger" thread. Removing the rusty metal primer with the Super Clean ate away most of the plating on the gun barrel. Cake like clumps of light yellow stuff grew all over it and I had to scrub it off. The aluminum lower hull tub had a similar reaction but not as bad as the gun barrel. The Rusty Metal Primer and Super Clean combo did NOT like aluminum. The die cast zinc parts came out okay. The muzzle brake was completely unaffected, unlike the gun barrel. Swathdiver - Speaking of the Floquil Polly Scale primer, does it need to be thinned to spray it with an airbrush? If so, what kind of thinner works best with it?

RE: Brandenburger Tor - Last Tiger
This is starting to look like an episode of Tank Overhaul. Below are photos of what the Last Tiger currently looks like after taking a nice bath in Super Clean. As you can see, a fair amount of the original gray primer did not want to come off, along with a few areas of the original Testors Afrika Mustard base coat. The original paint and primer had been on the tank for almost 3 1/2 years. After soaking the metal parts in the Super Clean two days ago, the mixture of the Rusty Metal Primer and Super Clean caused a chemical reaction on the aluminum Schumo gun barrel and the aluminum tub. It attacked the plating on the gun barrel, removing over half of it. The aluminum tub suffered a similar fate, but not quite as bad as the gun barrel. I will have to do some sanding with fine grit sandpaper to prepare both of those parts for painting. Once sanded, primed (with the correct primer), and painted they should look okay. This time, I will be using Floquil Polly Scale primer shot from my airbrush. I refuse to use a rattle can primer again, way too much overspray, got a sore finger from having to press down hard on the nozzle head to make the paint come out, had to shake the can continuously which seemed like forever, and had problems with the paint spitting out of the nozzle. And on top of that, I then had to soak and scrub it all off...Nightmare. After going through this whole paint stripping experience, I have concluded that I will NEVER, EVER do this again.. It would be worth the extra money it to me, just to buy a brand new full option kit, and start with an unpainted tank. The paint stripping process was hellish, and not enjoyable in the least. With that said though, I probably would not want to build a brand new kit as "The Last Tiger". As the finished tank will not look new, it is going to look like it's been to hell and back. As this project progresses, whenever that shall be, I'll post more photos..

RE: Brandenburger Tor - Last Tiger
ORIGINAL: rivetcounter The late tracks on an early Tiger is nothing new there are plenty of pictures showing this and at least 2 Tigers from SS101 in Normandy had the early type tracks fitted on a late Tiger. The question over possible white washed wheels is an interesting one http://www.tiif.de/thread.php?threadid=404&sid=018c26594343abcdf1c464eac44fa157 if you have a look at the first picture they do look white but on the second picture not as white as the stripe on the tree it’s also possible that they were painted a very light shade of yellow and this is what I would go for. Having studied the pictures again have you noticed the lack of armoured periscope cover on the drivers hatch and the lack of a periscope, the tank doesn’t look to have been destroyed, the suspension hasn’t sagged and the gun is a normal length. Have you also noticed on the last picture you posted the turret number 323 appears to have been modified from 393 which would be a strange number.
I have mostly seen late tracks mounted on hybrid, steel-wheeled, early Tigers. Post some photos of some of these early, rubber-tired Tigers with late tracks on them, I'd like to see them. I am the one that made that post about the whitewashed wheels on TIIF. Apparently nobody on that forum cared to comment about it. This tank has been my Muse since early 2009. I reached a similar conclusion in regards to the color of the outer road wheels. I most likely will make them a very light shade of yellow, by mixing a little white into my yellow base coat paint, just for those road wheels. I had not noticed the missing driver periscope and cover.. It is possible the Russians removed it. If you look at the photos, a lot of changes have taken place before the frontal photo was taken which shows the swastika on the turret. The turret has been turned around 90 plus degrees. The drivers hatch is at a different position. The loader side front toe shackle has been removed and is now missing. The hull machine gun is now pointing down instead of up, the headlight seems to been messed with (looks like the blackout cover has been removed), the remaining spare track links that were in the front track bar appear to be missing, etc. The Russians were busy screwing around with this tank and in all the photos they are posing around it like it's their trophy. It certainly attracted a lot of their attention. Now that you mention it, it does kind of look like it could have originally been 393..

RE: Brandenburger Tor - Last Tiger
This project has already gotten off to a bad start. I used the worst possible kind of primer I could have selected to prime the metal parts. The results were terrible. Don't ever even think about using Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer. That stuff is not red primer, it is the primer from hell. This is a classic example of making a bad choice, and a big mistake. Pzjgr - I am not keeping my hopes up for having the tank ready by May 21st.. There is just too much work to do between now and then and not enough time available. The primer disaster hasn't helped matters either. Rivetcounter - I agree with you on most of your detail list, except for the loader's periscope on the turret roof. I am guessing you're seeing it or think you have seen it in the rearview photograph. Maybe it is something in the background, one of the tree limbs.. Whatever it is it doesn't quite look like the late loader periscope to me. Yes it has a swastika marking on the commander's side of the turret. That swastika was painted on by the Germans. The Russians did not paint that on it, like some people have suggested. Another detail you omitted, is the fact that the tank is wearing late ice cleat tracks. All the spare track hangers are missing from the commander's side of the turret except for the top and forward most hanger piece. I thought this to be strange, do you have any insight as to why the other hangar attachments might have been removed? Would it be related to this tank most likely having been used as a training tank at one time? Do you think the outer road wheels have white wash on them? The photos are kind of blown out, highlight wise, but it was hard for me to tell whether the outer road wheels are yellow or have white wash on them.

RE: Red Oxide Primer Question
Sorry, didn't have a chance to take any photos of what this horrible primer looks like.. After examining the parts this morning, I found that the crappy primer was just flaking off on my fingertips as I touched the parts. Little small round particles of the red primer on my fingers. To say that I made a mistake selecting this primer is an understatement. Major disappointment. As Charlie Sheen would say, "sucky, suck, suck". I have all the parts soaking in Super Clean. I'm going to let them soak in there for several hours.. Hopefully I'll be able to get all of this worthless primer off of the metal parts without too much scrubbing. The only way this could have been any worse is if I had sprayed the entire tank with this stuff. Now I need to find a decent, gray primer to repaint the parts with. Screw the red primer, I just want something that'll work and be compatible with the Tamiya acrylic top coats.

Brandenburger Tor - Last Tiger
This is it folks! My last stand in RC tanking.. Also, first and last time I will ever strip old paint off of one of these tanks. I am converting my full-option, Tamiya RC Tiger IR Battle Tank into one of the last Tigers that fought in Berlin, just as it all came to an end. This tank belonged to the Müncheberg Division and was abandoned by its crew on the Linden Strasse, in front of the Brandenburg Gate on May 1st, 1945 (the day after Hitler killed himself). Something really did a number on the rear storage bin, almost totally demolishing it. Not quite sure how I'm going to handle that detail, but will probably leave that for last. This tank was in relatively rough shape when the photos were taken. My model will reflect this distressed condition. My metal primer mishap might actually aid in the battle worn and deteriorated look of this unique vehicle. The end result will be my interpretation of this tank, especially with the cammo scheme. I'm not going to try and painstakingly re-create every detail of the cammo I can extract from the photos. Photos are blown out anyway. I suspect this tank probably had a dark yellow base coat, with a combination of red brown and green cammo overspray. It most likely was a training tank, pressed into service at the zero hour as Berlin was crumbling under the Russian onslaught. I don't think that anyone has ever modeled this tank using the 1/16 RC Tamiya Tiger, but I might be wrong. Maybe, if I'm lucky, this tank will fight at the DAK night battle on May 21st. I missed the April battle because the tank was completely disassembled at the time of the battle. Actually, it will probably be a miracle if it is ready by May 21.. We shall see..

RE: Red Oxide Primer Question
Airbrushler - Yes, the can states that you can top coat over the primer.. Just doesn't say what kind of paints can be used as a top coat. I think this stuff is intended for painting an old tractor or something that had previously been covered with a layer of surface rust. After airbrushing or sand blasting the rust off, you would then spray this stuff on, then top coat it. It is weird stuff, and it certainly does look like actual surface rust, after you apply it. It takes a long time to dry too. It has been drying for over 2.5 hours, and still has a tackiness to it. Don't ever confuse this with Red or Red Oxide Primer like I did. This is a different animal.

RE: Red Oxide Primer Question
After further research, via the internet, into the "primer" that I had the misfortune of using, I have found out that the primer contains fish oil! This ingredient is used to combat moisture and prevent rusting of the metal. With the fish oil, I don't know how this is going to work out when using Tamiya acrylics as a top coat. Has anybody encountered or used this Rusty Metal Primer? It would be nice to know if I can spray my acrylics over this stuff, or if I am going to have to strip this Rusty primer off of the parts with more Superclean..

RE: Red Oxide Primer Question
Well, I ended up purchasing and using the WRONG primer. In a rush and semi-panic, to get the metal parts primed in my garage before the temperature escalates into the 90s (which it is supposed to do starting tomorrow), I purchased a can of Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer (for the ultimate finish on heavily rusted metal, which didn't register with me when I looked at the bottle in the store that this primer might actually produce a rusted metal effect.. Duh). I was thinking it was going to produce a red rust color, not a rusty texture in addition to that. It was the only red primer that I noticed on the shelf at Ace Hardware. Now my Tiger's metal parts look like they have been lying in a field somewhere for the past 66 years. They are covered with a textured coat of what looks like surface rust. I was going to buy just regular gray primer, but no, I saw the red color and decided to try and get a red primer like the Germans supposedly used on the real tanks. Now I have a good start for modeling a Panzer wreck.. If you ever want to paint a model so that it looks like the entire tank is covered with surface rust, then this is the stuff to use! Hopefully, I can salvage this screw up by airbrushing over top of the rusty metal primer with Tamiya Hull Red Acrylic or something equivalent. I guess I will try to sand the gun barrel and muzzle brake a little with #800 grit sandpaper first before I shoot the Hull Red on it using the airbrush. I really do not want to have to strip this rust primer off the parts and start over again from scratch. I don't have a paint mask yet, so it was loads of fun trying to hold my breath and run in and out of the garage between sprays. At least I was able to have the garage door fully open while I did all this crap. I was spraying with the parts laid out on top of a flattened cardboard box, which was sitting on top of an old table. Even so, I ended up getting some of the red primer on the bottom of my shoes, though I don't really notice any on the concrete floor of the garage.. I wore old worn-out shoes, so that wasn't really that big of a deal. But it proves that these rattle cans produce a large amount of over spray.

Red Oxide Primer Question
What is the best kind of red oxide primer to use on a Tamiya Tiger? I want to prime both the metal and plastic parts. Most of the primers that you typically get at your local hardware store are intended to be used on metal parts, not plastic. I spent a lot of time stripping the old paint off of my Tiger (What an ordeal that was, I won't be doing that again..) I'd like to choose an appropriate primer to use as a base to spray my Tamiya acrylic paints over top of it. I want a primer that will take the Tamiya acrylic paints and not have adverse effects on the plastic parts. I think some of you guys have used Rustoleum and Krylon primers, which are probably intended for metal parts. Do these work OK on the Tamiya plastic parts without causing problems? Do any of you guys spray primer through your air brushes, or do you all use Shaker cans? Lastly, is red oxide the correct primer color for a Tiger that was manufactured in the summer of 1943 (June,July)?

RE: Belt drive vs. Gears?
Dan, In my opinion, your belt drive design looks very promising. I find that it is too easy to strip out gears in the Tamiya gearboxes. I've already had 2 gear failures in my Tiger during the course of 7 battles on a rock covered, dirt field (DAK). That is a 28.5% failure rate, 2 out of 7 battles ended with a stripped out gear. And that was when running plastic tracks! Metal tracks would have even been worse. The modified, airplane gear-reduction units (by Schumo) leave a lot to be desired as well. I wish you success in your belt-drive design endeavours! I would welcome a new alternative to the current available gearboxes / gear reduction units.. Steve

RE: Best method for removing Tamiya acrylic paing from plastic parts?
I agree that heating plastic parts in a food oven is not a good idea. I also agree that Tamiya's plastic is styrene, not ABS. I have had a few old styrene car models actually warp, along with styrene parts resting up against each other that got fused (welded) together, simply from sitting in my garage during the summers here in Phoenix. Any oven meant for food preparation is going to get significantly hotter than a garage, even in Phoenix. I therefore no longer store plastic model kits in my garage..

RE: Mc Tiger - Billions Built....
I have a strong suspicion your R02 HG Tiger is fictitious so you really don't need to be going down the Hybrid Tiger Route with your captured Polish Tiger build. Most hybrids (early Tigers with steel wheels added) that I have seen , did not retain the air cleaners, did not have S mine dischargers, but often did retain the larger, early idler wheels. They did, almost exclusively, have the late ice cleat tracks installed. So you would need to buy metal ice cleat tracks plus the steel wheels to make it a hybrid. Oh, also spare track holders for the turret sides, most hybrids seemed to have those too. Maybe Rivetcounter can find and post an actual photo of an authentic HG Tiger.. That is something I'd really like to see. I've heard talk about them but no photos..
