RE: 2 Stroke V. 4 Stroke
Four strokes are not hard to use. I use OS, Saito and YS. They seem to run the same glow plugs forever and I will adjust the valves about twice a year. I just like the way they run so much better than 2 strokes. The only downside for beginers is they can experience greater crash damage. Bent pushrod tubes, valve covers etc. You can usually dig a 2 stroke out of the dirt clean it up and mount it in a new plane. I even put a 56 saito on my son's Sig Kadet. It really flys it nice.

RE: What 1:1 car do you drive.
My last 3 have been Jeeps. When Jeep came out with the JKU 4 door wrangler I had to ditch my old Jeep and get one. A Jeep that you can take the top and doors off of plus still haul buggies or planes. I have had an 07 that I lifted and now a 10 that is soon to be lifted. The new one has half doors which is really cool in the summer.

RE: Careers? what do you all do for work?
I started in the forest products industry working for my dad as an equipment operator. Ran my own logging crew hauling to him. Went to work in a papermill and became a Journeyman Electrical and Instrumentation Tech for 18 years. Now doing process control engineering. I help maintain the DCS and PLC'S for the mill. I still miss logging and running log loaders. If I ever hit the lottery I will start another logging job and cut till I go broke.

RE: Anyone else POed that the ultra sticks are gone?
I still love flying my US60. I never liked the looks and style of the GP sticks. I just started stripping all the covering off my Ultra Stick. I added rear landing gear mount for adding a set of floats later. The bottom is transparent blue ultra cote with the top and fuse in a Grey/white/flur orange T-28 military sceme. I had quad flaps but I am going back with just the long ailerons. After 450 flights or more the crow funtion lost its appeal. I am going for simple and lighter weight.

RE: Ryans Rebel Build Thread
One of the real builders in my old club built quite a few Rebels over the years. His have be powered by G23,26,38's US 41,Roto 35 and one had a Tartan twin. They all flew great. One of the pictures is of the late Dave Robelen. He was a fantastic micro builder of indoor models and it was hard to build lighter than him. His Rebel was less than 12 lbs with a G26. I think he said it was 11lbs 9 ozs.

RE: OS FS 110-a
A coworker of mine just got a new OS 110 pumped engine. He is putting it on a Sig Mayhem and is planning on using a 16x6 apc. Suitcase has the exact same plane with a YS110 also using a 16x6. I am sure we will get them to the field one sunday together and see how the two perform.

RE: What happens to my stuff when I die?
A flying buddy of mine passed away a few years ago. He was a great builder and designer. His wife told all of the guys that flew him to come by and pick up any model we wanted. She first offered any of them to the AMA museum which did take a few and we picked from the rest. Her son helped her have a sale on sat morning and sold all the rest of the stuff. My pick was a scratch built peanut size cabin Waco.

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications
Sometimes people think of a YS110 as just another power option and try to pick between it or a Saito 100,115,or 125. The truth is the YS is as strong as a 150 Saito but is smaller and lighter. I bet the new YS115 will really twist a prop. I have run 2 YS110 and they have no equal in the 100 size fourstroke class. Don't think that I am another YS koolaid drinker,I fly OS 91 surpasses and Saito 100's too. I wouldn't put a YS on a Cub but a Mustang needs the speed.

RE: What size 2stroke does OS.70FS replace?
Thanks. It has a fuel filler valve on it that I think is leaking. I am going to pull the tank and add a second clunk line and a fuel dot to it.

RE: What size 2stroke does OS.70FS replace?
This summer I got a Great Planes 40 size P51 with a old but never run OS 70 Surppass. I put it on a stand first to break it in and have flown it about 5 times. It is mounted inverted. I first flew it with a 12x10 APC a little too much load and it was pre detonating above 3/4 throttle. I changed to a 13x6 Vess wood prop. It still has a little knock to it. I was using powermaster 20/20. I changed to some 10 % Byron fuel and it seems to like it better. Do these older Surpasses have a higher compression ratio than new engines? The Vess prop will turn over 10,500 on the ground so I just picked up a 13x7 APC for the next test.

RE: What four stroke in a 40 sized warbird.
I have a Great Planes 40 size Mustang. It has an old 70 OS surpass in it. Its mounted inverted and runs great in this application. The model balanced with the battery behing the wing in oil cooler scope and needed 1/2 oz of lead in the tail. Now I have OS,Saito and YS engines. They all run good. How much lead would it have taken if I used an .82 Saito? Its much lighter than my 70. I agree get the plane first then pick an engine for it.

RE: Great Planes p51 First Time Kit Build Thread
It put a couple of flights on my mustang last weekend. I tried a 12x10 apc first. The engine was knocking hard and I had to reduce power to get it to stop. Next flight used a 13 x6 Vess wood prop and the OS 70 was happier. It really groves nice and the landings are easy.

RE: First 3D plane?
Try looking at http://www.ohiomodelplanes.com/models/index.htm They have many kits for sale. For your first 3D plane nothing beats a profile. My first glow powered 3D model was a 70 size Katana profile. Some guys just can't get past the plain looks of a profile but it will do things in knife edge that nothing else will. Try one and good luck.

RE: Spoilerons any fun??
Dave I have spoilerons setup on my 70 size Katana profile. When I first started using them the sink rate with full elev was amazing but it did catch me off gaurd trying to recover. I had to turn the mix off or add throttle will reducing up elevator to level off them turn off the mix. I like the idea of using the trainer switch. Things start happing fast when you are reaching for switches as the model drops closer and closer to the ground!

Thanks for the help. I will try a 12x8. After a couple more tanks of fuel I will mount the engine on the plane and finish it up.

Prop for Great Planes P51
I just got a Great Planes 40 size P51. It has an OS 70 four stroke on it. It took the engine off and have been breaking it in on a test stand. It had an 11 x9 wood prop on it. After 4 tanks of fuel I have started to lean it out some and it will turn that prop past 10K. I next tried a Dyna Star 13 x8 on it. I never liked that prop on my 91 OS but it did load the 70 down. I got 8700 rpm with it. What would some of you recommend for a prop size. Most of my flying has been Ultra Sticks and 3D models. I have never needed any prop with more than 6 inches of pitch. The engine is also mounted inverted. How do the little OS fourstrokes run inverted? Will I need onboard glow?

RE: os 108 prop sizing
On a Funtana I wouldn't want any prop with a pitch greater than 6. The airframe can't take too much speed. I have seen one flutter and come apart in the air.

RE: OS .61 Four Stroke low end settings
I too just got one of these old engines. Mine is mounted in a Great Planes Super Decathalon. When I first got it the rocker arms were stuck holding the valves open and the exhast lifter was stuck. All cleaned up it with a new F plug is runs great. It had a wood 11x8 prop on it that it will turn around 9300 to 9400 rpm on 20/20 powermaster fuel. What would be a good prop choice for this engine/plane combo? All I have is what it came with it and a bunch of bigger 3D props so I will need to order some.

RE: Great Planes Decathalon 40 Instructions
It will have to wait until next weekend. We had a thunderstorm moving in from the west with high winds that were blowing cross wind to the runway. It did get in a flight with my foamy between the wind and rain. But not a good day to maiden a new plane.

RE: Great Planes Decathalon 40 Instructions
Thanks for the reply. I sent the morning cleaning the engine. Both rockers were stuck and the exhaust liffter. I got all the old caster out of it and put it back together. It started right up and ran strong. I had to move the battery behind the wing bolts to get it to balance. Its range checked and the throws are set. I am going to take it with me when we fly tommorow.
