RE: Midwest Giles G-202
Finally got around to flying this thing for the first time a few weeks ago. Aside from issues with the Saito, the beast flew hands off with about 3-4 clicks of aileron trim. It feels light, and doesn't seem to exhibit any of the tip-stalling characteristics mentioned by so many others. It is a blast to fly, and with more time, should just get better. I should note that she requires a fair amount of rudder-elevator mixing to keep from tucking during knife-edge, but it flat spins with the best of them. I'm not much of a 3D flyer, but for standard pattern manouvers and all around stick-banging, I am well satisfied. Now, on to the next project....

RE: The Goldberg Ultimate biplane...is dead.
I'm not having an easy time finding one of these kits to build this coming winter. I had one back in the 90's and had an old O.S. 1.20 four stroke on it. Man that thing was great, even back then. Now, with the computer radios, I'm dying to try one again with mixing to get rid of the yaw coupling for knife edge. If anyone here wants to sell a kit, please PM me! -Tommy

That looks fantastic. The almost OCD treatment of the rivets really turned out well. Nice job, Tighe. Looking forward to hearing how the little gasser hauls it around. Are you planning on sticking a dummy radial in the nose? -Tommy

Chad and TKO, Are you guys 'glassing your airframes? They look very good! I've never fiberglassed an airframe before, but I have 'glassed insides of cowls, tabbed in firewalls, etc. I may have missed it already, but was there a reference somewhere to a 'glassing for dummies' thread? Chad, I am waiting patiently for payment for a couple of other projects, but I WILL eventually be ordering one of the kits soon. -Tommy

Well, I've been working on it since March of last year, so I really waouldn't claim to have set any building records, but if I had worked on it religoiusly it would have been done in about two months, instead of 10. But I'm happy with the results. I hope it flies well.

Pretty much done now. Just need to balance and add a little wingtip weight. One servo left to install. Weight is around 11.5lbs. Saito 1.80 should fly it nicely.

RE: Ryobi conversion running poorly
Finally got the Giles done and it weighs 10lbs 3oz. I did not put the Ryobi on it and installed a Saito 1.80 instead (got a very good deal on it). Haven't fown it yet, but as soon as it warms up a bit. I gave up on My Ryobi. It seemed to run okay, but the vibration threatened to shake apart my 10 months of love and care.

W8YE, can you flip the carb (rotate 180deg.) on the 180 to get the h.s. needle in a little more accessible position when using the slimline pitts muffler?

RE: Midwest Giles G-202
Finished up the wing last night. Pretty straight forward. Do youself a favor and move the rear bolt holes forward about 3/16", it'll save some headache and give some clearance for the bolts and the cardboard tubes. Here is what everything weighs so far: Fuse and Tail 2lb 3oz. Engine and Mount (Enya 1.20R and Hyde Soft Mount) 2lb 7oz. Prop and exhaust 5oz. Wing and center fairing 1lb 14oz. I am hoping to get in under 10lbs.

RE: Club Enya
Well, I dunno how much time exactly this engine has on it. The friend I bought it back from said he had put several seasons on it (he bought it from me originally, but it was still nib when he got it) and I did see it fly on several occasions. It does run pretty good now that I have the right prop on it, I was just hoping for a little more. It's taching a little over 11 grand with an APC 15-6 and a Mac's tuned system minus the pipe, still running Wildcat 15% Helimix.

RE: Club Enya
ORIGINAL: Hobbsy 5% max nitro and 18-20% lube with at least some castor. What is cantankerous about it, that word covers a lot of terratory?
Just not very well behaved in general...hard to start, ran hot, lazy needle response, poor idle, etc.. Discovered that I had it way over-propped and everything was just getting too hot. Apparently, the R120 was produced before the higher horsepower 1.20's came along and I assumed that most 1.20's would turn a 16-8. But after reading the instructions posted earlier, a 15-6 is all it can handle. After mounting a balanced APC 15-6, all is well and it is a very solid running engine. I'm using Wildcat 15% Heli with 18% oil, synthetic. I'll get some 5% with castor when this gallon is empty (won't be long, she's pretty thirsty as far as four strokes go). I'll finish off this gallon on the bench before I mount it in the airframe. I might be shopping for something a little bigger later though, as I don't think this motor is going to give me what I need. Projected weight for this airframe is 15lbs. I would like enough power to hold a hover (even though I don't fly that way) with reserve. Anybody out there have one running on a 15lb+ airplane that could share their experience?

RE: Midwest Giles G-202
I'll have to get pictures some other time, but the ply bag contains the following: (5) Birch ply horn blocks (2) Shaped Basswood Front Wing Bolt Block roughly 1-7/32" x 1-1/2" x 2-3/32" (2) Tapered Balsa Rear Wing Bolt Block 19/32 x 1-29/32 x 4-1/16 (4) Tapered Basswood Spar Widener (Replacing these also with balsa) (1) 3/16 x 1 Birch Dowel Rudder Hardpoint (2) 1/4 x 1-1/2 x 3-1/32 Birch Ply Front Wing Mounts (1) 1/4 x 1 x 6-5/8 Birch Ply Rear Wing Mount (2) 1/4 x 2-1/4 x 3-7/8 Birch Ply Landing Gear Mounts Also, my kit has the two-piece landing gear made of some very thick aluminum. I'll be shopping for a set of carbon gear.

RE: Club Enya
Hey Guys, I'm trying to prep an old R120 for a Midwest Giles and need to know a few things: It is a used engine that I got from a friend who had it on an edge or similar. I never saw it run, but he said he flew it regularly with no problems. I tried to run it on a stand briefly with old Cool Power Four Stoke blend. Probably a fuel issue, but nontheless I couldn't get it running smoothly. Seemed like it just got hot no matter what the needles were set at. And no idle either. I understand how the tuning process works, but I have no literature detailing where the needles need to be set for a good starting point. Looks like an air-bleed style carb, but being an Enya I imagine it is more than what it appears. Also, previous owner lost the original exhaust and had a Mac's tuned pipe arrangement on it. I want to put a pitts style arrangement on it and am looking for suggestions. Thanks in advance, Tommy

RE: Midwest Giles G-202
Chip, Springpatch=Springfield. I am planning on installing either a Y.S. 1.40 Sport or perhaps a Moki 1.80. I don't have either yet, but depending on what the fuse weighs, I'll buy accordingly. Yes, there should have been a bag with a total of five 3/4" square by 3/8" thick aircraft ply blocks for the rudder (1) elevator(2) and two others I have yet to install. Also should be a rear wing bolt plate, and two front wing bolt plates. A few other odds and ends are in there too. I'll double check the bag tonight when I get home and post up here what all is in there. She builds heavy, quickly. I built up the empennage as per the kit/manual, but I cut lightening holes in (skeletonized) the sheeting that covers the built-up structure of the stab and fin. I also did away with the hardwood stick in the stab and went with a hard balsa stick of the same size. I'm using wood glue (carpenter's glue) almost exclusively on this build. Time consuming, but a whole lot easier to sand off excess then CA or epoxy. I just last evening framed up the fuse. Goes quickly if you have all the sub assemblies done beforehand if using wood glue. I have yet to start the wing, but I plan on making changes there as well regarding the weight. I am just wanting a good sport flier without too many bad habits. I'll try to get some pics up since there seem to be a few of these being built lately.

RE: Ryobi conversion running poorly
By the way, it still vibrates like a madman at around 6000. I have balanced the prop, tried other props, balanced the recip. assembly several times as per several other posts, balanced the prop hub, even checked the balance on the prop washer, and still it vibrates. I'm afraid to put it in a plane for fear of foaming up the gas or worse, shaking the radio apart. I had to heli-coil the backplate mounting holes because the dam thing vibrated the bolts loose and bunged up the threads. Seems a little better mounted on a wood bench, as opposed to the steel plate and vice like in the video. Hmmm, after proof reading the above info., seems like I should probably measure the crank runout to make sure it isn't bent. I'll get to that at a later date. I had ACL reconstruction on my right knee 2 weeks ago, so getting around is a bit painful right now.
