RE: TOWER HOBBIES SUCKS
ORIGINAL: Super Kupfer I would take Tower Hobbies any day over Horizon Hobbies. They treat people with respect and if you ask for a return shipping slip they will send it to you. One thing I love about them the most is that if you have issues they will return to you pretty much within 24hr or less unlike Horizon, BTW they even replied to my emails on weekends from time to time. Try to beat that. O did I mention, they have better options and more of them.
You've got that right! Horizon is way down near the bottom of my list. Was looking at some eflite motor, picture had it with a spinner, so I emailed HH support to find out which spinner that was so I could order it with the motor, as it wasn't listed with parts or accessories. They emailed me back about a week and half later to visit the product page on their web site.. lol!!! Pretty much told me all I needed to know.. Anything they have can usually be had from somewhere else. Lately I've been ordering from amain hobbies, been very pleased, and the people have been very friendly the couple times I've called. On shipping, 2 day air UPS for 6.00?? Yes, they've been smaller boxes as needing parts and building supplies, but dang.. thats pretty sweet. They've got my business!

RE: TOWER HOBBIES SUCKS
Have ordered from Tower off and on for several years, tho admit I typically don't go to them first. I try to spread what little wealth I have around a bit if you will to smaller shops. With Tower I never really know when something I ordered will show up. Sometimes its really quick, most of the time a day or so past anticipated delivery date, and once not at all. In which case I called them, explained I'd not received the order after 2 weeks, and they UPS'd the part overnight. Nice! As to returns, I followed their instructions, got credit for the return with no additional questions asked. All items I've received were properly packed. Nothing really new to add, thats been my experience with them. Overall its been positive.

RE: Who else has failed on their first build?
Know what you mean. Been flying for 9 yrs., small micro flyers to 1/3rd scale. I have attempted to build somewhere around 5 kits or more, and have a big barrel full of balsa for the effort. Heck, they didn't even make it as far as being fully framed up. So you've done better than I have! But... kept after it, and finally have my first plane framed up and am in process of covering it. Its in the same vein as yours, the e'moth from retrorc.com. For all I know it'll last a grand total of 3 seconds in the air. If thats the case so beit, I'll have still learned something and WILL figure this building stuff out. Stevens has several kits am wanting, good looking stuff, not complicated etc... not exactly big-boy kits, but dang, if it means building some small flyers, that actually make it to flight, to move on to bit bigger, then bit bigger, etc.. than I'm all for it! Just don't give up..

RE: glow to electric conversion
I fly a mix of Eflite, AXI, Turnigy, Hacker and a few misc. brands. I tend to fly Eflite and others on 1/4 scale and below to keep some costs down, but always fly Hacker on the larger expensive birds. Hacker cost a bit more, but the products are very robust, dependable, powerful, and support, if its ever needed, is great. Currently running a Hacker A60-14L on a 23lb. Porter, pulls it through the air with little effort. Never had any problems with any of the other brands, tho I do think that Eflite ESC's (40 & up) work great, but they seem a bit long and cumbersome, and would rather the switch be an option, plus its on too short of a lead. Have had couple issues with the switches on Eflite ESC's... i.e., if I plug up the battery but don't turn the switch on within a couple moments, I'll lose binding, if I turn it on within a few moments then back off, it all stays good. If I don't turn the switch on, at the same time the backlight on the radio goes out is when the receiver will lose binding. Odd indeed. If I turn the switch on and plug up, everything stays solid. Very strange, and have only experienced this using Eflite larger ESC's with Spektrum receivers bound to JR radio. Not been able to replicate on Jeti, Hacker or CC ESC's. I still fly Eflite ESC's, I really like their switched ESC's, I just have to pay attention that I don't lose binding plugging up... once powered up and in the air its all spot on, no glitching etc.. go figure..

RE: Virus warning
I did a packet capture on a PC with AVG, and one with no anti-virus. While I havent had time to look at them in detail, so far not seeing anything that really trips a trigger. The one w/o the AV is fairly large, but I did notice that it makes a call for .jpgs from an ISP thats had problems with malware and such in the past. Its not within the IP range of morerc.com, so not sure exactly whats going on, since our 'cuda box was flagging THAT domain. There was also a call for a turbofeat.gif, but can't tell where it was trying to pull that from, and google returns no results on that name. Will try to make some time to look at the capture a bit closer, but again, I'm not seeing anything delivered on the upfront. If any gearhead wants a txt copy (w/some of our network info. redacted) of the capture to see what they can find let me know, it was grabbed with MS NetMon.

RE: Virus warning
ORIGINAL: TheDriftingNarwhal Now I don't know if this is accurate as I'm not entirely sure as to how it works but it is certainly relevant. I'm using AdBlock Plus with Firefox (Both free).. can someone perhaps try installing this addon and see if it fixes the issues? A random thought but a possible one. By the way, maybe you should try virtualization rather than a physical ''junk'' computer. Install Puppy Linkux, Wireshark and the rest of the capture tools.. besides, Linux is resistant to Windows based code. (Other attacks are another story of course)
That did cross my mind, but its looking like I'm not going to have a lot of time rest of this week. (No opportunity to even fire up the PC up at home last night). If its still hanging around thru the weekend, I may give it a shot, supposed to be raining here so no flying! [:o] In that vein I've used Ethereal and Wireshark for a few years, recently stumbled onto MS NetMon, not sure where I got it but had dumped it into a util dir and forgot about it. Fired it up a few days ago, and you know, I'm kinda impressed with it. Nice interface and a decent option set, various decodes, etc.. If you're into this stuff, and it sounds like you are, take a peek at it if haven't already. As to Linux, I must admit I'm not there yet, heck, I haven't been able to even get Umbutu to successfully install. Something else do do on a rainy day.. lol!!!

RE: Virus warning
Whatever the deal its a huge pain in the a$$, have ads to post and ads to respond to. One would think that by now RCU staff is aware of the problem, their lack of saying anything is a bit troubling. Have a PC at home I don't mind trashing, so will try those pages this evening with no AV installed and see if anything is actually delivered to it. Same thing.. got the first msg about 2 weeks ago or less, html/framer, but only lasted a couple hours and was cleared up, everything checked clean. Past few days have been nothing but blocks...

RE: Virus warning
ORIGINAL: TheDriftingNarwhal You have to understand how the applications work. If something looks like an attack - even if it isn't - it will try to block it. If there is no way to block it, perhaps it won't allow you to continue to the page. As far as the ''Superior'' Norton, perhaps rather than Norton being ''smarter'' than all the rest, perhaps it is simply a different form of security software that doesn't scan for that type of attack and therefore does not display an error. And this is most likely a block that is consistent among programs that actively block such issues. No problems with this, however I can say that it isn't the fault of the web developers or advertisers (morerc.com seems legit but not sure there) but more likely a failed implementation using code logically written accidentally in the same form of an attack. It isn't an attack most likely. Think of emails - images are blocked unless you know who they are because images can lead to attacks. Of course most images are not attacks.. but they are prevented anyways. This problem however is a more unlikely coincidence in the code and is therefore blocked with more effort. It's pretty much just the software doing what it's supposed to do, it can only go so far to determine if something truly is an attack.
Personally I don't think its an actual exploit, but as you mentioned, more than likely sloppy coding. On the other hand, I'm not going to risk it by disabling a bunch of stuff and seeing if that is indeed valid. Plenty of legit sites have had problems, sites much bigger than RCU or morerc.com. In that vein, if other network devices are also showing a site has a problem, then I have to take it that there is a problem, regardless if its sloppy code or an actual exploit. Sloppy code opens itself up to exploits, so who's to say what the real deal is until the code is actually looked at. At a minimum, one way to find out is to pull the banner ads in question and see what happens. Its interesting to note that the spikes started on Aug. 20th. Shouldnt be hard for the web guys to backtrack to that date and see what changed.

RE: Virus warning
ORIGINAL: 3136 Oh for Christ's sakes just pay for a decent antivirus software and you wont have any more problems. Why is it that eveyone who is using AVG is having problems? It's because it's crap!!! End of story cheapies! I don't understand being accused of being stupid, because I use software that works, and filters my computer from crap, that free software does not. How is that being stupid? My pc is working fine, yours isn't , who is the stupid one?
Wow.. I wish I had the same magical insight into the networks I manage from my desk that you do from the other side of the world. What the heck makes you think everyone of us is running some kind of freeware??? I'm sitting on a business network with thousands of dollars invested in products from edge appliance filters down to desktop business products, and if a site is getting flagged, its not because of 'cheapie' software or the network decided it doesn't like RCU. Kindly explain to me why our Barracuda web filter product is also flagging the site? Any answer to that? Why is it that our company has researchers and financial analysts on hundreds of sites everyday, and they don't seem to be getting flagged? Oh.. I get it now, its all ass-backwards.. RCU is OK and all the other sites are wrong! Anyway, keep playing with your more-than-the-rest-of-us-can-afford-and-is-never-wrong software, you obviously have it all figured out, the rest of us will just have to suffer... Now.. for those looking for additional information, it seems the problem is stemming from banner ads. The pages with problems seem to have banners served up from morerc.com. Specifically ts001, ts004 and ts007.jpg I can't get any further than that without doing some sandboxing, as our 'cuda box shows the morerc.com site has exploit problems and won't let me on to it. Anyway, thats what I'm seeing, will leave it to the mods to sort out.

RE: Virus warning
Been getting it as well since around middle of last week. Am also using AVG, and this is the only site I get flagged. Normally when trying to access the Market. Am an IT Manager and on a LOT of sites everyday, so I really don't think this is an AVG problem. Could be an actual exploit, or could simply be something mis-coded or such with the iframe set used to deliver the ads. Either way, I'll spend my time on RCG until fixed. Love RCU but, its had a lot of problems since ownership change and it seems to be getting more problematic with each passing year.

RE: What size of RC planes do you like?
Pretty much a mixed bag with me, flown ultra-micro's to 1/3rd scale. Nowadays I keep a few micro flyers and hobbyzone cubs around for the backyard, some warbird foamies in 50+" wingspan, everything else is around 1/5-1/4 scale. 1/3rd scale was a lot of fun, but bigger planes mean bigger and more of everything that goes in them, not to mention transporting, getting them set up and having adequate space to store them. Can get expensive quick. 80-100" wingspan seems to be my sweet spot. Can build them out nice without breaking the bank, they transport easily, don't take a lot of time to set up and you don't need a second home to store them.
ORIGINAL: DESERT RATT Sorry the pic. is so small. only one I have of these holders. They are made out of pvc 40 gauge pipe. The wing and fuse. is rubber banded down the the holder and sand bags or straps to hold it to the bed floor. Work well for me using them for a few years and each one is built for the particular plane. very cheap to build and only thing needed is the pipe and connections along with the primer and glue. I have transmitter stands and plane stands for the shop to hold them while doing work on them. RE: Transporting in a pickup
ORIGINAL: OldFart1 Funny RD, I do just about the same thing. Upside down table - the fuel box against the tailgate pretty much wedges it in fore to aft, I have a piece of plywood with a 2x4 that sits between it and the wheelwell that locates it side to side.
Excellent... I'd wrestled with PVC contraptions, sandbags, rope strung across the bed, and so on. Stumbled across the 'table method' one day trying to figure out how to best load and secure a Porter. Its really been working great and can't see myself using anything different. Toolbox, gas cans, and so forth fit great in the 'pockets' between the tailgate and wheel wells. (Wings go in the back seat). The bed is rhino lined, and everything sits on top of a Rubbermaid super grip mat that pretty much covers the floor of the bed. NOTHING moves or slips around...

RE: Transporting in a pickup
Typically fly 1/4 scale and larger, have a Ford F150 w/shell and grip mat on the bed floor, and here's what I do to keep stuff in place. Went to Lowes and bought a 72x30 table with the fold-down metal legs. When legs are folded and table is facing 'legs up', slide it into the bed. The plane sits on top of it perfectly. (The bottom of the table has large 'dimples' in which the wheels set in just right..). I have 2 pieces of small dia. nylon rope tied to the metal table frame, which I use to tie to the landing gear. Very quick and easy, still plenty of room for gas and toolbox, etc.. When get to the field, I slide the table out a bit, untie the cord from the wheels, lift the plane out, and then I also have a table to use during the day. Been working like a charm. Plus since the table is almost as long as the bed of the truck, there's no sliding around.

RE: Lipo Fire in Garage
ORIGINAL: cbh82v If you read the wikipedia page you'll see that water is a bad idea.  Water can make some metal fires larger.  A five gallon bucket full of dirt near your charging station is a cheap alternative to a class D fire extinguisher. cbh
ORIGINAL: rhklenke
ORIGINAL: cbh82v Dry powder fire extinguishers are best for Lipo fires.  lithium is a combustable metal. Use a Class D extinguisher. <a wiki='''' en.wikipedia.org='''' href=''''>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_classes
Who the heck has a Class D fire extinguisher around?!? As I said, water works - just turn off the power to the charger first... Bob

Agree that a bucket of dirt is cheap. The wiki ref; post is a teeny bit misleading, in that the OP mentioned dry powder vis-a-vis Class D. Class. True a Class D would contain a powder, typically a copper compound, and they are WAAAAY expensive. But a Dry Chemical unit that meets Class B / C should work okay in this case as well. "REGULAR DRY CHEMICAL extinguishers contain a siliconized sodium bicarbonate based dry chemical with free flowing and non- caking additives. Economical Class B & C protection with lower initial cost and recharging. This chemical smothers fires in flammable liquids and pressurized gases and will not conduct electricity back to the operator." Class B Flammable or combustible liquids such as gasoline, kerosene, paint, paint thinners and propane. Class C Energized electrical equipment, such as appliances, switches, panel boxes and power tools. These are pretty reasonably priced, and since I'm usually multi-charging large 5-6S packs, might not hurt to have one around. Been working with lipos for years, no problems, but sure seems to be an uptick on the fires breaking out...

RE: spektrum vs JR
Flew DX7 for several years, using Spektrum rx's up to the AR7000. Nowadays using JR 11X with Spektrum & JR rx's 7000 & up. The 11X is DSMX, but all the rx's in my planes are DSM2. Only brownout or lockout ever had was during a DX7 range test with an AR7000, and the plane went bonkers. Turned out that the rx was too close to a UBEC that was causing some kind of interference. Once the rx was moved away from it and a magnet put on the UBEC lead, no problems, flew great from then on. Typically fly gas/electric planes 1/5 to 1/3 scale and a mix of park flyers. I do admit tho it feels a bit odd flying a PZ Night Vapor with an 11X. [:D]

As a former member of 1/75th Rangers, its a special day of rememberance for me too, as the modern day Rangers were born on the cliffs of Pointe Du Hoc. That said, it was not a good day on any stretch of those beaches. We always watch 'Saving Private Ryan' on this day.
