RE: Would you be willing to pay a membership club fee for a dirt track at a club
The field is at the corner of Peck Rd and 38, the entrance is off of 38. We have a small dirt track at Eli Field in Monticello, IL. Our membership fees are $100/yr for the use of the runway and the car track or $40/yr for only the car track. Keep in mind that the area you are thinking of for the car track at FVAC is also the area where people park their vehicles/trailers for events and that area is also used as a heli flying area. I was a flying club member there for 3 years and I know how much time, effort and $$$$$ went into that field. Being someone that's into both cars and aircraft, I would probably throw up if they tore up the far end of the field and put a car track in. [:o] I would rather see them re-develop the dirt track they originally had in Elgin instead of tearing up the grass at FVAC. Just my personal opinion.

RE: Best Still-Camera to Capture Jets?
I agree that it is all personal preference. I have been shooting a Nikon D40 for the last 3 years and a D90 for the last 18 months or so. The only thing I do not like about the D40 is that I'm extremely limited on lens selection. I originally bought the D40 because it was more comfortable than the comparable Canon at the time. As was stated earlier, if the photographer is any good, they can make any camera look great. My brother is a graphic designer and bought a D40 last year shortly before my niece was born. I get aircraft photos I'm very happy with out of my D40, he gets excellent portraits of my niece from his. Definitely sink the money into glass and not the body. I don't think I've ever met anyone who was interested in photography, invested in a dSLR (no matter what their budget), and in the end was unhappy with their decision.

RE: JR 1222 Strange Pulse Width Numbers caused engine shutdown
I don't beleive the DSM2 receivers ever produce no signal during failsafe. Am I right?
Dustin, In short, yes, you are correct. The only time a DSM2 receiver would ever product a lack of signal would be if the receiver were to see a complete loss of voltage. If the receiver completely loses power, everything goes dark. The failsafe only protects against a loss of signal and the receiver has to have power in order for the failsafe to function. At that point, the receiver technically wouldn't be in failsafe (due to lack of operating voltage). I will try to send you an email later. As a side note, the reason the Spektrum/JR DSM2 receivers have had the QuickConnect "blink" for the last couple of years is because it reconnects so quick you typically don't know you had a problem. The only indication of a brown out in a lot of cases is if the aircraft goes up with the LEDs solid on the receivers and they are blinking when it comes back down. If the receiver regains power in the event of a brown-out, the reboot time is a fraction of a second with the current firmware.

RE: JR Y-Harnesses
Amplified y-harnesses change the signal voltage, which the Spektrum/JR 2.4GHz systems do not like. The Spektrum systems are designed to see a signal voltage within a certain range. On 72mHz systems, the signal voltage is the same as the input voltage into the receiver, which means as your battery voltage changes, your signal voltage changes. The Spektrum/JR 2.4GHz systems maintain the same signal voltage throughout the flight. Note that I am talking about two voltage numbers, the input voltage (voltage of the flight battery or power coming from a regulator) and the signal voltage. The Spektrum signal voltage is much lower than the 72mHz signal voltage. This is why a Matchbox or the Spektrum signal line booster is required for using the Jet-Tronics gear door sequencers, etc (the sequencer is looking for the higher signal voltage it normally saw with the 72mHz systems). Reversing y-harnesses and regular y-harnesses are OK with Spektrum/JR 2.4GHz, just not the amplified versions. Hope this helps.

RE: Best way to transport..
I have had some sort of a racecar all my life, whether it be go karts, shifter karts, sprint cars, what have you. I have always had tandem or tri-axle trailers, I've never owned a single-axle trailer, but I have always been paranoid about having a tire blow out on a single-axle trailer. If you are not carrying the spare tire on the front of the trailer, side doors are a must, unless you mount the spare tire right inside the back door of the trailer (may or may not be possible, depending on how you have your trailer set up). The last thing you want to be doing at 1am is unloading airplanes and all of your stuff to get to the spare tire if you have a blow-out. All of my trailers have the spare mounted right inside the side door; one trailer I work out of has it mounted on the opposite side on the wall (it's also a V-nose), but the trailer is always loaded with a clear path to the spare tire. The trailer I normally work out of was a year's work in progress of going to airplane events and asking guys, "What do you HATE about your trailer? If you had to buy your trailer again, what would you change and why?" I can honestly say after a year and a half with the trailer, I have yet to find anything that "should have" been changed. It was custom built from the factory to serve its purpose as an airplane trailer, and does it quite well.

RE: Best way to transport..
I guess most rely on the trailer itself for the suspension effect?
You get two trailer suspension options...leaf-spring (commonly found on the smaller/lighter trailers) and torsion axle. Do yourself a huge favor, regardless of what trailer you get, and buy a trailer with a torsion axle. Will it cost you more money? Absolutely. But because airplanes weigh next to nothing, compared to a general contractor packing the trailer full of construction equipment, there is not enough weight on the leaf-spring axle to make the suspension effective. If you go with a leaf-spring trailer, the trailer will bounce like a clown on crack. Todd, in regard to the V-nose...pulling an 8.5'x14' V-nose, tandem axle with torsion suspension, for the last year and a half with a cross-over SUV. Trailer weighs 3500lbs DRY. Loaded with 7 jets, 5 helicopters, EZ-Up, 2-3 kero jugs (full), chairs and other misc. stuff to fly for a week, the car got 14mpg. It normally gets 21-23 not pulling the trailer. My extended cab 2WD Chevy Silverado 1500 got 14mpg pulling a regular 6'x12' Pace cargo trailer (curb weight of about 1050"# with torsion bar suspension), hauling nothing but a 500# motorcycle in it. Or you can also haul 4 foamies in the bed of a Dodge Ram Power Wagon and get 9mpg [:D]

RE: Glow ducted fan power plant selection
Just an FYI, I have a BVM .91 without pipe or seals that is ready to drop into a model if anyone is interested. The engine is very very clean, I picked it up for my Maverick, but was unable to locate the rest of the glow D/F parts needed to install the .91 back in the airframe. I have not run the engine, the only background I have on it is that the engine was newly rebuilt by Tommy Dodgen at BVM a couple of years ago. The engine has plenty of oil in it and is in great shape. I have a photo available if need be. I thought I'd put it up here first, otherwise it will go to eBay. I'd like $225 shipped for it (within the continental USA). If you are interested or have any other questions about the engine, please send me a PM.
mapquest / google map doesn't show a developed field but that's where the event flyer directions drop you off.
From the Best Western, turn right out of the parking lot and follow Iron Horse Pike down to the railway museum. Go over the two sets of railroad tracks (WATCH when you go over the tracks, the museum has active trains using both rails), the road will turn to gravel and you'll see a gate ahead of you. Go through the gate and follow the road around to the field. The road over to the field continues off the end of Iron Horse Pike. The flying field property is located above where the pond is shown on the map.

I just checked on BestWestern.com and the hotel in Monticello (which is at the entrance to the field) still has rooms at $67/night for Thursday night and ~$70/night for Friday/Saturday. The Super 8 in Champaign near the mall (I-74 between Prospect and Neil) still has rooms available at $58/night through Travelocity. The Best Western in Monticello also has a Military rate of a flat $70/night for any government/military folks:
"Available to current North American national, state, county, and municipal government employees. RE: hobbyzone vs eflite?
Keep in mind, the Apprentice is not designed as a teach-yourself-to-fly airplane, it's designed to be flown with an instructor. The Apprentice also needs a LOT of room to fly (think 6 or 7 football fields). The Super Cub is a teach-yourself-to-fly airplane and can be flown in a much smaller area. I would highly recommend going with the Super Cub over the Apprentice if you are teaching yourself to fly. The Apprentice is much more aerobatic than the Super Cub and is not really designed to be flown in an elevator/rudder configuration.
