RE: 2.4 - Why Are They Failing?
Minn Flyer, Not to be a whiner or tattletale, but it seems as though the main violator of your civility policy is dirtybird. If he has a disagreement with another member of RCU, he begins to condescend ("Maybe if you get some more modern equipment you won't have to wonder about so many things."). If his interlocuter's technical ability matches his own and can demonstrate it, dirtybird pretty much becomes an a***ole. I've had this experience with him some time ago regarding some problems with 2.4 GHz, and a quick scan of his posts reveals this is his M.O. Thanks, Tony

RE: You Can Win First Place at a Warbird Rally With An ARF? Really?
I've had the same experience with kit-builders at local club meets: poorly built plane, know-it-all owner. I don't think ARF guys should be singled out. When I started, all I wanted to do was fly. After two seasons of pounding my ARFs into the dirt, I began to modify. From modification to wholesale airframe changes. Then last year I scratch-built a powered glider and an EDF jet. Now I'm scratch building a Super Chipmunk from Carl Goldberg plans. Certainly not where I thought I'd be when I started 5 or 6 years ago. I imagine I am not alone in this progression. And if someone never progresses past assembling ARFs, who cares? The hobby is more accessible now than at any time in the past, yet people still find reasons to complain. Back to the topic: shouldn't some blame be placed on the judges? If it's a scale event and non-scale attachments are noted, shouldn't that net a low score, and someone who took more care in building a true scale aircraft without all of the accouterment score higher? I don't know how these contests work, just asking a question.

RE: E Z Arf Models
...and I've seen an EZ P-39 sell for over $325.00. The stuff I'm collecting will sell just fine, if that's what I ultimately do.

RE: E Z Arf Models
LOL About 3 years ago, I bought several EZ airplanes from the LHS that had been languishing on the shelves for 15 or so years. The owner asked if I planned on building them. I said no, just to have. I don't think he got it. Then my wife found them stashed. I repeated the response to the LHS guy to her. She didn't get it. But now, vindicated! This thread is awesome.

RE: 2.4Ghz - Is it really ready for Hobby use ?
Oh my goodness, Xantos. Wait until the users dirtybird, dick Hanson and onewasp get a look at this discussion. There have been several such threads started expressing doubts over the reliability of 2.4 GHz systems. Their responses: name-calling. Just preparing you for the impending excrement storm. I agree that there are some problems, and there has been enough doubt or confusion expressed by guys that have doing this much longer than I (like you, for instance. A King Cat is not a beginner's plane) over proper setup and operation of the various spread spectrum systems that I have decided to keep my 72 MHz stuff (United States) and leave the headaches to others. Sorry about the loss.

RE: Reason for not upgrading to 2.4
Ditto what outdoorhunting said. Box some of those abundantly cheap, clearly superior receivers up (I'll spring for the Tx module) and send those babies out to us. I'll even chip in for shipping.

RE: Reason for not upgrading to 2.4
That's fantastic, Zeeb, that you are a tort lawyer and have expertise in that area. The Futaba 9C has been on the market for over 10 years. Please name a lawsuit against Futaba regarding the failure of the dual elevator servo problem that you mentioned, oh J.D. of the Skies. I've had a couple of custom models that used dual elevator servos. Not a problem experienced. I never called those who rely on ModelMatch "lazy," but if by making such a claim, you will regail me with the ruminations of your finely honed legal mind, I just might. I'm simply saying that they need to pay attention. If you had bothered to read any of the other comments in this board, you will have noticed that I mentioned that I had about 15 models that I use (probably not nearly as many as you, Zeeb), not one. I just can't get over how zealous you guys are about 2.4. The ardency for 2.4 GHz (and the requirement for all to buy in, lest not being perceived as savvy as those who have) really is shocking. Write your congressman and have them propose legislation to make 2.4 GHz the standard, and outlaw our FCC-specific 72 MHz band. That would be awesome and save countless lives! Let's march on Washington! Hold demonstrations! ARE YOU WITH ME?!

RE: Reason for not upgrading to 2.4
I don't think Hanson (or his dog) really want to be confused by facts (72 MHz works fine for most of us) and manners (frequency boards seem to be beyond some of us). I've tried for several days, only to have my arguments (founded in fact) ignored. According to them, if you don't convert RIGHT NOW, then you are not using all tools available to you and are not as smart as those who do convert. I'm with you, Dick. Never a 72 MHz shoot-down at our club, and now that everyone is migrating to 2.4 GHz, no waiting. Why would I leave a radio set (9C) that I have had virtually no problems with to dump wads of bucks into a new system (see outdoorhunting's comment on the cost of upgrading)? Such an upgrade could be done incrementally, but there exists the problem then of dragging around another Tx module, and having to remember which model is on which band. I can't wait until the next new technology is released 8 years from now (assuming hobbies are still legal then). Hanson and onewasp will be back on this board, shilling this new technology and explaining how 2.4 GHz is a relic technology. My PC is over 10 years old, yet it works fine for the tasks I use it for. Am I a lesser human being for not rushing out and taking advantage of Quad Core technology? Finally, regarding Hanson's argument about safety: how many of your industrial accidents could have been prevented by workers paying attention? Matching the correct model on my Tx with the airframe in front of me has never been a problem. Somehow, I think most people don't have a problem with it.

RE: Reason for not upgrading to 2.4
Dirtybird, dick Hanson, I won't deny that 2.4 GHz works. Obviously, it does. The reason for my original post was to refute the claims made by onewasp (explicit or implicit) that a) all 72 MHz users are cavemen, and b) there are absolutely NO problems with the 2.4 GHz band. I've never had a problem with radio hits when using 72 MHz PCM, and only one instance of a hit with FM. Thus, justifying the upgrade in my case (about 15 airplanes) can't be done. We can go 'round and 'round on technicalities here or there on RADARs, power levels allowed (500 watts is 500 watts, regardless of generation method; and when the microwave system has to be shut down for a tech to work on it, I am assuming that the transmission level is higher than .1 W), but the point is that the author of the link that onewasp posted expressed some reservation about the technology, a guy who works with radios for a living and flies RC expressed reservations about it, and there have been several threads started by seemingly competent pilots that have trouble with it. Thus, it isn't perfect. It doesn't have to be, but to pretend that there is a consensus among techs and engineers as well as users that the technology has been perfected and works without flaw is to ignore evidence. Where's onewasp in all of this? I really was hoping to have my masculinity/technical competence/RC piloting questioned. -Tony

Right, ad hominem. Don't address my arguments (or those posited by onewasp's idol, the author of the article I cited) but rather insult my intelligence. You have the zeal of a true believer. Vote for Obama lately?
