RE: Goldberg Tiger Club
My brother and I finished the calculations on our new Tiger 3. (The name Tiger 3 because we will power them with 30cc gas engines.)Each of the Goldberg Tigers were scaled up by a factor of 1.15. Hence, the 60 inch Tiger 2 becomes the 71 inch Tiger 60, and then that evolves into the 80 inch Tiger 120. Now our new endeveaor, following the same pattern as the Goldberg designers, comes the 92 inch Tiger 3!! After finally settling on the dimensions and the factors for enlarging the plans, we're ready to go to the plans shop and begin the design process. We still need to settle on some issues such as wood dimensions, he likes to build light, I like to build robust; one piece or 2 piece wing - I want the convenience of a 2-piece, he wants the simplicity of a one piece. We discussed retracts, but decided that wasn't really in the spirit of the Tiger 2. Then, tail dragger or tri-cycle gear. I really like the looks of the Tiger 120 with the wheel pants and the tail dragger configuration, but again, it kind of misses the spirit of the original. We may have to build one of each. But regardless, of these details, there will be 2 of them and they will be as true to the Tiger 2 as we can make them. Once we start the building process, we'll post some pictures. I hope some of you have an interest in this. I'm fired up. (No, the plans will not be for sale, we're copying Goldberg's design and that would be a copyright infringement. The only way we could share our plans would be if we got permission from Goldberg. If anyone wants to build one we will share our calculations and building notes.) RR

RE: Goldberg Tiger Club
The Enya 46 will fly it. It won't be very fast, but if this is your first low wing plane, you don't need it to be fast. BUT, after you get comfortable with the Tiger (which won't take long), you'll be itching to turn it up!!

RE: Goldberg Tiger Club
I'm in. I've built at least 4. My brother is on number 5, a Tiger 60 with an OS 75ax. He set this one up with flaperons. Works great. Our winter project is going to be a prototype and probably 2 "production" Tiger 30's. That is, scratch built enlarged version suitable for a 30cc gas engine. It's hard to beat a Tiger!

RE: What size of RC planes do you like?
I fly anything I can put a 30cc gas engine on. Mostly in the 80 inch range. My giant super sportster goes together like any 40 size trainer. One connection for the ailerons, 2wing bolts and I'm ready. $4.00 gas instead of of $20 glow fuel plus the advantage of way better mileage, and very little clean up.

I'm going to be there. Bringing my Warhawk. It's been a good event every year, unlimlited flying, lots of good food and good friends. The venue has really improved with 120 feet of covered pits.

RE: Painting with rustoleum
What speedracerntrixie said about the Spraymax is true. I've used it a few times and it's absolutely fuel proof. It's a 2-part high-end rattle can. I've used it over a doped finish on cloth, over monokote, and over rustoleum sprayed on top of monokote. It produces a beautiful finish and is available in both glossy and not-so-glossy. $20 a can, but you can get any color that has every been produced for a car or motorcycle. It's the only paint I will use on a new plane.

RE: What do you use to clean your monokote?
I use a snake oil mixture that I learned about a couple of years ago. Use a gallon of the winter mix windshield washer. Pour a pint out and add a pint of 91% rubbing alcohol and a hefty squirt of Dawn dish washing liquid. Gently stir, not shaken. Just the opposite of Bond's famous martini. This will last a long time. Put it in a spray bottle and use the micro fiber rags the guys have mentioned above. Monocote will oxidize (rust). I'm not sure if it's the nitro, the oil or a chemical combination but it forms a rough scale on the finish that's really hard to get off. For this you can use Goof-Off or Goo-Gone. After that a good wax will it make it look like new.

RE: SYSSA 30CC GAS MADE IN USA
I maidened my GP Giant Super Sportster last night. What a great plane and engine combination. I put 4 flights on it and each one was better than before. I love my Syssa engines and this combination may be the very best one of all. I had one on a Hangar 9 Taylorcraft and that was a sweet deal. Transmitter failure ended that. Total destruction including the engine. I boxed up the pieces and sent it to Todd. 2 weeks later and $117 and I had my engine back in like new condition. Can't ask for better service that that.

RE: SYSSA 30CC GAS MADE IN USA
In a cowled engine, it is really difficult to hold the choke and flip the prop. I put a cotrol rod with a "U" bend in the end ot it on the choke plate and ran it down to the bottom of the cowl. I melted some lead (about a pound) into a 1 X 2 inch block with a control rod stuck in the middle of it. I put a little "U" bend in the end of it as well. When I get ready to choke the engine, I just hang the "automatic choke" on the control rod. I own 3 of these engines and that's how I do it on all of them. Works like a charm.

RE: AMSOIL SABER 100:1 PRE MIX SYNTHETIC 2-CYCLE OIL AND AMSOIL QUICK SHOT FUEL ADDITIVE
I too was an Amsoil dealer. I had 2 brand new CRRC 26s on a Nosen 310. Took it to the field to run in the engines. I had been told that at 100:1 the engines would be fine. BS. In the first 5 minutes I had wrecked the bearings in one of the engines, and nearly torched the other. After $175 to rebuild the trashed engine, not to mention putting off the maiden flight of my new plane for a month, I dropped my dealership, and never recommend to anyone that they try to use Amsoil, or any other oil for that matter at any mixture less than 32:1. Having said that, I get 12,000 miles between oil changes in my powerstroke diesel pickup using Amsoil synthetic motor oil. It is just not possible to use that lean of a mixture no matter how good the oil. And no matter who tries to tell you.

RE: SYSSA 30CC GAS MADE IN USA
I own 3 of these engines and have never experienced anything but the best service. Yes, I too have waited to get something I ordered, but then when I needed some different size standoffs, Todd sent them USPS Priority mail and I got them in 2 days. I wrecked one of my planes and did some serious damage to the engine. Sent it in, Todd fixed it, and I got it back in about 3 weeks. Couldn't be happier. I experienced some of the same engine starting problems with one of my engines. Had helluva time getting it to draw fuel and run right. When I got it running, I discovered that what it needed was just a little time running on the ground. Kinda like the break-in you would do with an ABC nitro engine. After that, it runs perfectly. Syssa is a good company that makes a tremendous product that you will be very happy with. Be patient and your patience will be rewarded. Steve

JR9303 issue
I was setting up the ailerons on my MXS-R with my 9303 to use 2 different channels. I needed to turn down the travel to fit the recommended throws for precision aerobatics as opposed to 3-D. I was in the travel adjustment menu and selected the aileron channel. It let me adjust the "left" throw, then the right. I went into the servo reverse menu to get everything going in the right direction, and now the travel adjustment won't let me select "right" throw at all. It flashes and goes back to left throw even with me holding the stick all the way to the right. What's up? I just got the radio back from horizon where they put a new motherboard in it. Haven't used it but maybe 3 or 4 times. Never had this kind of issue before. I always consider that I'm doing something wrong before I assume the radio is the issue. Let me know what you think. Steve

RE: Building a Dynaflite Super Decathlon
I've built and flown a couple of these. I'm still flying one that I built back in 2001. They are great airplanes but require a specific skill set when flying. To answer your question about the struts, yes! They must be made to be functional and not just for looks. Consider using after market airfoiled metal struts that will actually carry a load. We modified ours using 1/8th inch music wire as the load bearing mechanism, and the wood was just for appearance. Also, I'm a big fan of horsepower, but the 55 is too much for this plane. We started out flying them with Moki 1.8s changed them out for OS 160 fx and now I'm flying it with a CRRC 40. Still too much but at the time I got that engine I hadn't been initiated to the Syssa 30. That would be the perfect match in my opinion. On the engine selection topic, the recommended engine size in the instructions is way off. I can't imagine how difficult it must be to fly if it's underpowered, (120 size engine).

RE: Changing to A123's
I don't use anything but A123s. All of mine come from Radical RC or NoBs batteries. NoBs has lots of really good information on the use and set up of different model types along with recommendations for chargers. Electrodynamics has probably the best customer service of any electronics company in the hobby. Can't go wrong with any of the 3. I don't use a regulator at all. All of my receivers are the Spektrum 7000s and 95% of my servos are JR821 standard digitials. I use them in 11 different planes from a giant scale Cessna 310 down to a 4 channel trainer and have never had any problem.

RE: SYSSA 30CC GAS MADE IN USA
I own 3 of these engines and have not experienced the dreaded loose muffler issue. Having said that, I agree with Steve about the possibility of the issue being a harmonic vibration. I didn't do too well in trig so take my comments for what you paid for them, but when a sine wave is generated between two machines and the two machines are not in harmonic balance, a vibration will occur that could be the root cause of the problem. The length of the tubes effects the frequency of the sine wave. The solution would be to change the length of the exhaust tunes. As I said, I haven't had this problem, but it could be that I put a 2 1/2 inch extension on each exhaust tube in order to get them out the bottom of the cowl. I use a heat/chemical resistant plastic tube that seems to be vibration resistant as well. Don't remember off the top of my head where I ordered it from, but do remember that it ain't cheap - $17 a foot. Another idea worth experimenting with! I know that I will continue to use this tubing as a standard mounting accessory. It keeps exhaust off the bottom of the plane and MAY be keeping me from having this issue. I'll look up my source for the tubing and share it here if anyone wants it. Steve

RE: Chief Aircraft Problems!!
I doubt very seriously if even one person will stop dealing with Chief. They are one of the most respected full scale and RC dealers around. I have always had excellent service and support. I would think that a reasonable person who cared about his reputation would more quickly realize that maligning a reputable company would not serve you well. As for me, ill be taking your posts for what I think they're worth.

RE: Need a more Powerful Starter
The very best starter/battery combination that I have ever seen is the Sullivan Dynatron coupled with the Makita Lithium battery. Finer Edge manufacturing makes the adapter. It puts 18 volts of lithium power straight to the starter. I've used it to start everything from .46s to O.S. 300 twin, and gas engines from Syssa 30cc to CRRC 40 pro's. No wires, no bulky battery boxes, no field batteries. I can use it for a month without recharging it. The downside - it ain't cheap!!

RE: SYSSA 30CC GAS MADE IN USA
I just heard from Todd. The big snow storm that slammed the North East got Syssa Aircrat as well. Just today (11/04/2011), they got power back on. Today is the first day they've had internet, phones, or even electricity. He said that the most common noise is the sound of generators still powering peoples' homes and businesses. For several days there was not even a service truck in their neighborhood trying to restore power. He was very apologetic (unnecessarily so) for those of you who are waiting on service or the shipment of new engines. He said they are working from "can 'til can't" trying to get caught up. So, if you have something you're waitin on, just hang on. They're working on it as fast as they can. It wouldn't hurt to send a word of encouragement the way modelers do when one of our own is in a jam. (post it here, his inbox is jammed!!) Steve

RE: SYSSA 30CC GAS MADE IN USA
I already own 3 of them. It's the only engine I fly anymore. The 30cc (1/4 scale) size planes are the perfect size for me and the Syssa is the perfect engine for this type of plane. Todd may get behind on his email and voice mail at times, but my experience is that he always catches up. It's a great engine, well worth the wait. I wouldn't trade one of my Syssa's for a boxcar full of Chinese POJ. Just my 2 cents worth. SS

Old Cub
A long time ago there was a kit for a Cub that used dowel rods to create a scale structure for the fuselage and empannage. It had metal fittings fabricated where metal was used in the full scale. I want to say that it was 1/4 scale perhaps a little bigger. I found a fuselage of this plane framed up with some of the pieces missing. It has no wing or struts or anything like that, just the structure. I remember reading something about it years ago but don't recall any of the details. Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about?

RE: RE:
Glow engines were my first choice but decided that the way 2x 120-150 size engines gulp the fuel that I would save the cost difference in about 18-20 flights. So, I went with the CRRC Pro 26s. These aren't power houses and on the first flight I didn't do anything but fly around the field about 10 times and land. Had plenty of power for a scale like take-off, and didn't worry about an engine out because I had run the engines on the ground 3 times and had them running like sewing machines. If money is not an object (hahaha, who isn't watching their money right now?!?!) you should consider the Syssa 30cc. They are light weight and they are strong running engines. Plus, they're made in the U.S. of A. not some Chinese POJ. I haven't measured to verify this, but I believe they would fit (sideways) in the cowl with no cut outs except for the exhaust. I'm a recent convert to gas engines, and will never go back. After Christmas, I'm going to get a 4* 120 kit and guess what engine I'm going to put on it?!?! Yeah, I've already got it laying on the work bench. Steve
