RE: Why the AMA is not growing...........
ORIGINAL: j_keiter The AMA is not growing because technology has created tiny high performance, cheap planes and helis that allow people to drive or even walk to there local park and fly with small risk of injury and low noise.
The AMA grew when technology moved from rubber band power to IC engines. The AMA grew when technology moved from silk and dope to prefinished coverings. The AMA grew when technology moved for free flight to Radio Control. The AMA's lack of growth can be attributed to the change in the way people look to join groups of like interest. These groups, be they social, technical, veterans, sporting or any other, are all suffering from lack of growth.
ORIGINAL: The Toolman Don't forget the ''Don't want the magazine class'' either. I get it, but could live without it for the extra price they charge for it.
We can fix this for you in an instant. Just have your subscription sent directly to a school or library and I will send you a check for the $18 or if you have a Pay Pal account we can do it that way. Just notify the AMA and have them copy me with a comfirmation that it has been done. Anyone else want to join this effor to get MA to where it might do some good for the hobby?

RE: Why the AMA is not growing...........
ORIGINAL: airplanejunkie AMA is simply to expensive for the new guy. The Park Flyer Program is the right way but still to expensive. AMA must start to look at the risk. Higher risks should pay higher dollar amounts. The most cost should be directed towards heavey / fast models. How we can expect the new crop of park flyers to pay $30.00 dollars flying a 2 lb. electric model and I pay $60.00 for a 200 mph turbine................... somethings wrong. I have been a modeler for 52 years (AMA5129) and the modeling community needs to look at size, weight and speed and make some obvious decisions on what we are doing. This can reduce the cost to all of us. Thank you.Dave George
The Park Pilot program should have taught us something. We went for years where all modelers paid the same membership fee, be they indoor microfilm or turbine flyers. We never heard the microfilm guys complain - they were real modelers and supported the national modeling organization. Now we are in a hot discussion over whether toy airplane flyers* should get reduced membership. A single membership fee is part of AMA history, we can go back to that AGAIN if we just say so! *defined not by power/size/cost, but rather by the owners desire, or lack thereof, to become part of the model aviation community or just play in the local park or playground.
ORIGINAL: 103/17 When I hear talk about ''competition for the AMA''........who here remembers SFA ? I sure do. It fell flat on its face after just a few years. I knew guys who belonged and they all switched back to the AMA. SFA was less money, no magazine and no infrastructure. It was just plain old insurance. Its gone. 103/17
And after the SFA went TU there was the United Modelers Association: United Modelers of America, Ltd. 6510 FM 20 EAST LOCKHART, TX 78644 Web page: http://www.unitedmodelers.com/ PHONE 512-764-9014 Listed under: Maiorka, Heather 1 Caldwl County Dale, TX 78616-0000 HEADQUARTERS FAX 512-376-9442 For those 19 or older as of January 1, 2001.
ORIGINAL: SkaBob What percentage of AMA clubs are ''involved'' and have sanctioned events?  I think I've only heard of one club in southeast michigan hosting a sanctioned event, but there are at least 8 or 10 clubs within a 2 hour drive of my house... Most of the clubs have fly-ins and fun-flys...but nothing that would require AMA involvement or sanctioning...
There were at least a dozen scheduled sanctioned events in Michigan during July, August and September. Have you ever looked at the Contests Calendar that appears in every issue of Model Aviation?

If 1/10th of the effort spent here P and Ming about the AMA and why it is losing membership were spent in actually building up the organization the AMA would not have a problem with declining membership.

RE: Why the AMA is not growing...........
ORIGINAL: abel_pranger Ed- I copied this excerpt from your OP, as the topic seems to have been forgotten by some: ''But again, what about the new guys with the $120 to $190 radio control electric aircraft they got for Christmas, and believe me they are being sold by the thousands around the country, are we suppose to run them off or groom them as the future of the AMA. My choice would be to groom them for the hobby, but we can't do that by insisting that they spend almost $50 to join the AMA just to fly a $120 airplane. Better they should take the $200 set of golf clubs to the local course where they can play for free. They can play for free can't they, isn't that why golf is so popular? How about that $500 rifle - of to the great outdoors to hunt, but wait that tract of land is leased by the local gun club who are probably short on members also and would love to let you try out for free. '' Maybe you could direct the new guys [link=http://www.modelaircraft.org/forums/default.aspx]to this AMA site[/link] so they can see what a swell bunch of folks AMA is comprised of, particularly the most ardent supporters/spokesmen for the organization. Surely they will see this is something they want to be a part of. Abel
They don't have to jump to another forum when they can just check into the Bottom Feeder threads here to get a real good look at the movers in shakers in the hobby. RE: Why the AMA is not growing...........
All hobbies where craftsmanship and a multitude of skills are developed and nurtured by the members are facing the same problem (if you want to consider it a problem). Ask any real model railroader. Toy trains do not make a model railroader any more than today's ARFs make an aircraft modeler. They might serve as a step to get people interested, but unless the next step is made they will remain toy airplane flyers, and as such, I agree, there is no reason for them to join the Academy of Model Aeronautics. The AMA will not be alone, as the population tends to gravitate toward activities where there is lesser commitment required. All creative endeavors where a learning process is required will see a decrease in participation. So be it, the dedicated modeler will somehow live with it while the paint by numbers crowd moves from the fad of the day to the next, never knowing the fulfillment that real modeling brings.

RE: Tail (Rudder) Touch
ORIGINAL: RCPAUL And what rule of physics is being violated? Paul
"Law" of Gravity: Newton developed his "Law of Gravity" to explain the attractive force between a pair of masses. In the twentieth century, it became clear that this is not the whole story, as Einstein's theory of general relativity has provided a more comprehensive explanation for the phenomenon of gravity. Still, Newton's law of gravity is an accurate low-energy approximation that works for most of the cases that you'll explore in physics. Three Laws of Motion Newton's First Law of Motion states that in order for the motion of an object to change, a force must act upon it, a concept generally called inertia. Newton's Second Law of Motion defines the relationship between acceleration, force, and mass. Newton's Third Law of Motion states that any time a force acts from one object to another, there is an equal force acting back on the original object. Then we could get into the whole realm of aerodynamics where a screw up can be detrimental to the health of the model and anyone unfortunate enough to be in the trajectory path.

RE: District X Election
ORIGINAL: ltougas In our club I was elected most likely to re-kit an airplane two months in a row, I’m kidding; it was actually three months in a row. [:D] Seriously, our club has a standing roster of officers; there are not annual elections, so it isn’t possible to be elected as an officer.
Now that is interesting. Just how are the club officers selected? As far as an AMA field in District X, you are looking at an area 1000 miles by 750 miles. Even in the center of the area you would have 500 mile radius if you located the site in Nevada. We won't bring in Hawaii and Guam. Do you really think you could get the support of the guys in Arizona and Utah to put a site in the population center, around LA, where land is prohibitively expensive? Having lofty goals are admirable, but having unrealistic ones waste everyones time and money. Of course given the make up of the left coast population (that brought us Waters, Boxer, Feinstein, Pelosi, Waxman) you might well pull off getting elected on the promise of an AMA flying site even if it is not attainable.
