RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
ORIGINAL: kgo068 Hi Rev & Kmot, nice to meet you two guys.. VIDEO!!  [:@]no one in my club can even take a photo! I will have to seriously look into this though. If there is one thing that I really hate... is a beautiful scale model ww1 or ww2 ,that looks just superb.. and then ,there it is! A 2 STROKE with a spark plug & cap out the bottom !  ..and the noise.  ( even if I do have a Sparrowhawk with a MT62cc,with no muffler) No offense to anyone of course. Like I said before ,I am determined to make this Corsair fly on the 400.  Some guys on RCU have Saito fg57 twins,a saito 450 r3. They are more than I wanted to spend.( my allowance-wife now too) so  I have an ASP 400. Cooling in the Corsair- it does get a little warm & have been tempted to do some cutting- when I decide on the best prop for my setup ,I hope to be able to throttle back somewhat. But yes cooling it better is my next project. Like my scale heli ,I try to run on the rich side in an attempt to take some heat out,I wont go below 18% oil- I may go back to 20%. Klotz 198 is a low viscosity heli oil,its good but will not tolerate too leaner setting. Tommorrow I will bore the hell out of everyone and continue with the first flights of my heavy corsair. Some more photos of installation too. I really must get a video though........
Kym, Great to meet you too! Its not always a problem of getting lots of air out of the cowl, a good solution may be to just let less air in. I would block the cowl with some (black) ply and only let the air passing over the cylinders through. After all, all the air that passes the cylinders further than 3mm away is useless for cooling. Just a thought. Rev

Welcome Kym! Great looking Corsair. I have just one question: How much Air is actually coming out of that cowl? The ratio in to out schould be 1:3. Rev

Just ordered a 22x8 G-Sonic. Will try it. Otherwise the 20x8 stays on. Looks awfull with that giant cowl but theres enough air passing through it. I'll post Numbers too as soon as I can. rev

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
ORIGINAL: Carosel43 Rev, i have not forgotten about the dome nut i owe you i have just been busy! i will try and get it done this weekend. Also i will order than P39 spinner from you if they are still in stock, i am sick of waiting for YT. i have sent you a few pm's but they dont seem to be that reliable Roger, very bad news about the Zero :( from my experience with the engine its likely it either overheated or a cylinder went out. Looking at the cowling on the zero its possible it overheated as the air can get in nicely but cant get out. To prevent this problem block off all the gaps between the cylinders. It could have been something else but it fits your description of what happened. I hope the wings can be fixed, do you have a photo of the damage?
Carosel, no problem about the Propnut. I just have to get this test done and I have just spent my lunchtime looking and found a german Manufacturer that is giving me a 1/5th Corsair Spinner for the Test. I only got one PM about the Laser. The guys name is David. Airacobra Spinner is still in stock. 2 or 3 blade? @Roger: Sorry, only looked at the pictures. Sorry to hear about the loss. Can only confirm Carosels Input. Did you use a Glow system? Rev

Short "ping" from Austria. Love the Zero!!!! Type 44 Racer is coming along nicely. Still some finishing up to do but looking good. Those dreadfull wheels have to go and I am thinking of a 22" size prop for more cowl clearance. What Size would you guys go with? Anyone know where I can get a Corsair style Spinner or Propnut? Rev

What Glow Driver do you have? I had a very similar issue. Glow5LP. Plugs only luke warm. no idle. Tried running the engine on a 1,2V Lead battery and everything went fine. Sent the Driver in and recieved it today. Will try on the Weekend.

RE: FA450R3 - Raiders of the lost RPM's
Truth be told, I am happy with my 6330 rpm on the 22x10 and will be flying the engine with 0% anyway. I just want to see how much BHP / RPM I can get out of it with a bit more Nitro. I also have some props coming. The next step will be sound tuning. I am a sucker for engine sounds. (my wife thinks I am crazy but while writing my articles I actuall like listening to radial engines on Youtube... [&:]) My friend Gerhard Hielscher is making me some different exhausts to test and I want to make one myself leaning towards the Keleo design. I will keep yall posted.

RE: FA450R3 - Raiders of the lost RPM's
ORIGINAL: SrTelemaster150 It might just be me, but listen to the idle of this 450R3 @ 1:18 in the clip. If you advance it to 1:18 & pause, then you can cycle back & forth between the 2 W/the pause/play button. Now, listen to the idle of Rev's 450R3. Rev's 450 seems to have a more rythmic throb, not a cackle like the 1st clip. It's very subtle, but I think I can detect a different rythym. That makes me think that it was timed to fire all 3 cylinders during a single revolution
FWIW, the engine sounds a lot more like the top video now!

RE: FA450R3 - Raiders of the lost RPM's
Alrighty then. Had a short window with the wife and kids at the playground and the neighbours ... well, not home. quickly got the engine out of the basement and into the carport. still have that awfull menz prop on it that kills RPM but anyway: 77F 22x10 Menz Standard *yuck* 0% Nitro Idle still at 950 w/o glow and not loosing a cylinder peak 6350 rpm stable at 6330 rpm = 4,2bhp @ 29.5lb thrust (11.75kg) and 59.9 mph (96km/h) WOW much better. Now I really want to see what this engine will do with 5 or 10% Nitro. Thanks for all the Input! Rev

thanks for your analytical work. I am quite annoyed with myself that I did not check that before tearng the engine apart and timing anew. we just got back from our trip and 9.30 pm sunday is not the ideal time to let a 450 roar in the suburbs. I hope I do not come home from work too late tomorrow and get a chance at WOT. rev

I have put 50ml of synthetic Oil into the crankcase and sealed the nipple on the engine. runs well and I will change the Oil after about 3 hours of running. Works well for some guys I know who have the 400 and they are both motorcycle engine mechanics so they should know [:D]

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul
Nope, I mean this Landing light [;)] I think the broken Link pins where really more of a spook than a mass problem. I know of exactly one that broke and that is KMOTs. My engines astronaught was the rest of a c-clip the previous owner had replaced and forgotten to take out. I have the carb in 12 high and the engine runs fine. I am going to leave it there to avoid a lot of muck coming out on priming. I dont use an electric starter so a hydrolic blockage cannot cause damage.

RE: FA450R3 - Raiders of the lost RPM's
ORIGINAL: Iflyglow That is one of the rustiest engines I have seen in a while. Take the time to polish off the rust when you put your new bearings in.
Nope, not when you look at KMOT's FS400AR thread. Check out the 400 Radials we had to deal with there. THAT is rust ;) This is mere flashrust [:D] But truth be told I have already ordered the bearings and plan a complete teardown of the engine in the cold months ahead. I really want to see whats inside and after the very successfull teardown and rebuild of the fs400ar I am really confident I can do this one too. There is no report on that subject yet so maybe if I document it it will help fellow modelers to overhaul their engines as well just like KMOts thread helped me. heres some pictures of my fs400 crankshaft before and after the rust treatment. RE: FA450R3 - Raiders of the lost RPM's
Gentlemen, first of all thanks for all this information. Everything has been taken into account. Although it was 10.30pm I just had to go and check the timing. Took off the backplate with the diffusor and checked all cylinders from 1 to 3. TDC cylinder one > Both rockers quite the same TDC cylinder two > delta between rockers about 4mm TDC cylinder three > delta between rockers about -2mm Now I bought this engine used from a US bloke who claimed he had only run it on the teststand once. Now say I believe him then that would mean Saito really messed up when assembling this engine. If I dont believe him then somebody took the engine apart and didn't time the cams properly. Picture one shows that there will be some cleaning to be done in winter. Maybe new bearings too... Picture two shows TDC Cyl 2 Picture three are the rockers on Cyl 2 @ TDC 2 [:@] Picture four are the rockers on Cyl 3 @ TDC 3 [&:]

RE: FA450R3 - Raiders of the lost RPM's
ORIGINAL: Carosel43 Rev, there is an easy way to check the timing without takin the engine totally apart. the whole thing is to involved to go into right here, we can sort it out on pms or call me at work if you like. Also, if we can just bash this nitro argument on the head as its getting us nowhere. My instructions say 5-15% nitro, so im using 5. Horizon in the US say that 7000rpm is obtainable on a 22x12. That is not possible, and thats been pretty well proven by other folks with 450's on upto 20% nitro. Personally i think the performance im getting on the 22x8 menz is about right when i compare it to my SC400 Radial. so, Rev clearly has an issue but i would doubt 5% nitro will gain me 550rpm. In any case, 6900rpm on a 22x8 menz is not bad, its about the same as a dle55, i can live with that, especially when there is no tendancy at all to drop a cylinder (unlike my SC :( )
6900 on a 22x8 is about 4,3HP. 13,97kg Thrust but only about 83km/h (52.2mph). I am not quite satisfied with numbers like that.
