RE: UMS Evolution Radial Care and Operation
I did not ask for a shipping quote to California, but the person I spoke with said that they DO in fact pack the fuel in quart containers to prevent sky-high shipping costs... For those who want to mix their own fuel, FHS sells straight methanol as well.

Gents, I just spoke with FHS Supply / Red Max fuels; they've been making model fuels since 1969... You can still order ANY blend your heart desires from FHS. I asked him about the price of 7% oil, 5% nitro, (remainder methanol) radial fuel and the price was $19 - $21 per gallon based on ordering 4 or 5 gallon cases. Their fuel is sold in quart bottles. Andreas, I STRESS in the manual that your flying wires MUST BE PERFECT. All solder joints must be SILVER (or brazed, which is better) and absolutely PERFECT. The flying wires are the ONLY THING holding this airplane together... Very sorry to hear about your loss[:o]

RE: Composite-Arf 33% Gee Bee R2 - First Flight - Pics - Videos - L@@K
Bumblebee... WELCOME to the fascinating world of piloting a scale Gee Bee R2 [:D] It is difficult to give you exact advice designed to cure your issue.... FIRST, are you positive that the following are PERFECT?? Dihedral - minimum 4.5 degrees each wing and EQUAL CG - 17-18% of chord? This equates to 73mm - 75mm back from the leading edge Minimal rudder throws - the rudder is VERY effective on this plane PERFECT rudder linkage with NO SLOP Digital servos w/minimum 150 in. oz. torque Aircraft is trimmed for hands off, level and straight flight at 3/4 throttle Flying wires are "guitar string" tight? Your engine, prop and weight are perfect, but the extra HP will indeed add some P-factor. Compared to a DA150 the affects will be minimal. Once ALL of the above are confirmed, you MUST mix some right rudder with your throttle. The total amount of rudder throw from neutral is about 2mm. The rudder should NOT begin mixing until you reach approx. 50% POWER... at that point, the rudder should mix in a linear fashion until at full power you have 2mm right rudder deflection. Assuming you get all of this correct, you will likely find that flying this airplane IS a continuous compromise. As Delmar Benjamin confirmed, it is UNSTABLE in PITCH and in YAW. Correcting this required an expert pilot sitting IN the cockpit sensing every deviation... we on the ground do not have the ability to sense subtle changes. A GYRO would be a great addition, but simply adding a gyro will not fix the issues unless you have the gyro perfectly tuned to offset the Gee Bee's tendencies... this will take trial and error... and the by the time you have it dialed in, you will be an EXPERT Gee Bee pilot and may no longer need a gyro[;)]

Has anyone tried contacting RED MAX FUELS / FHS SUPPLY? http://www.fhsoils.com/model_prices.html Back when I ran Technopower and Seidel radials, Red Max would make me any blend I wanted at a reasonable price, or simply sell me gallons of methanol with which I could dilute off the shelf standard glow fuels.

Tower Hobbies has GREAT customer service. My only complaint about them is that over the last decade, they have severely curtailed their product line and now are more of a glorified "toy store" than a hobby shop. Perhaps they are geniuses for doing this[X(]... it seems to be the direction the hobby is moving, but personally, I do not like it[:o]. Regardless, Tower makes shopping easy and affordable and they stand behind their products and service.

RE: BEST 50cc CHINA ENGINE RIGHT NOW??
Early in American history, the ENTIRE federal government was financed via Import Tariffs! There was NO income tax! Free and Fair trade are wonderful IF, and only IF, the trade is "free and fair." Ever looked at the trade agreements we get into with these other countries? And then the tyrannical dictatorships we assign "Most Favored Nation Trading" status? It's SICKENING! As it seems the American people are too stupid to elect politicians that have America’s best interests in mind, the only way to combat this erosion of our manufacturing base is for We the People to BUY AMERICAN WHENEVER POSSIBLE! When I flew glow, I tried my damndest to support FOX engines, but when it became a choice between losing my airplane/fiddling with my engines every weekend OR buying a quality product like an Italian Super Tiger or an O.S., I HAD to abandon the inferior American product. WITH Desert Aircraft Engines, NO SUCH COMPROMISE IS NECESSARY! DA makes the best gas engines on the planet (and btw, most German RCers AGREE WITH THAT STATEMENT) Buying a DLE or some other Chinese knock-off is pennywise and pound foolish!

RE: BEST 50cc CHINA ENGINE RIGHT NOW??
IF you actually listened to the 'dimwits' who said they hoped "Obama would fail," you would know that what they said was they wanted his big-government, nanny-state, over-spending, over-regulating, healthcare-wrecking, social manipulating, special interest agenda to fail. Whenever we have one branch of government running rough-shod over another/and our Constitution, their "failure" is integral to the continued SUCCESS of this representative republic. There is nothing divisive or unpatriotic about opposing an oppressive agenda...it is our responsibility as US citizens. The bigger picture is, most all of us are hypocrites! We all pay lip-service to the "success" of American business and the American worker, while we spend our money on imported products, most of which are from China. With the BEST gas engines being built right here in the USA, the only compromise in buying a DA is its somewhat higher price. However, you get what you pay for and at the same time, promote American business and American workers. This is not only a no-brainer, it's a two-fer. btw: Unlike a Harley Davidson or a Chevy, almost all of a DA engine is made in the USA.

When you can purchase an American made 50cc engine with over a decade-long track record of success and the very best service in the business, why even consider a foreign made alternative? I would prefer a DA50 with 40 gallons of gas through it to any new Chinese alternative.

Andreas, Congratulations on joining the CARF Gee Bee fraternity!![;)] I wish to make a CORRECTION to post #1156 Set up... Everything remains the SAME, EXCEPT my statement about Rudder to Throttle mixing. I have flown the Gee Bee both ways, and concluded that NO mixing was the preferred set up. HOWEVER, this was due to my mixing being WRONG! The optimal set up is to have right rudder mix begin at about 50% power. The deflection should be 1mm at 50% and should increase to 2mm total right rudder deflection at 100% power. Of course, every airplane with be a little different and pilot preference is also different, but the CORRECT MIX will in fact make the Gee Bee easier to handle. (just as the wrong mix will make it more difficult to handle) Your English is GOOD... but you might want to reach out to Hannes as I am sure he can communicate in much more technical and specific terms to help you out. GOOD LUCK! We want PICTURES[:D][:D]

Jimmy, The Granvilles (Pete Miller) designed the airplane with 4.5 degrees of dihedral. However, it has been determined that a little more helps with directional stability. IF you can manage 5 or even 5.5, you will be better off and will never notice the deviation from exact scale.

RE: 33% Gee Bee Hostetler Build
The M6 is OK, but the full scale Gee Bee used a modified M6 reflex airfoil, considerably thinner... I believe 12% of chord. This does NOT lend itself to good handling and unless you are a stickler for perfect scale, I recommend the Hostetler airfoil shown on the plans OR another well-known (for excellent flight characteristics) semi-symmetrical airfoil.

RE: 33% Gee Bee Hostetler Build
I am not building a Hostetler, but intend to. However, having built and flown several Gee Bee R2 models, I can guarantee you that you simply cannot go overboard when designing and mounting your landing gear! Gear MUST be mounted rock solid into hardwood that is braced beyond any doubt - I would use carbon fiber reinforcement. You should use the largest BOLTS that will fit into the mounting flanges and the gear should really be braced with functional flying wires. ROCK SOLID gear are the KEY to successfully landing your Gee Bee and to its long-term survival (oh, and EXCEPTIONAL pilot skills[:D]).

The two-piece Keleo will make installing the collector ring INFINITELY EASIER! On the Evolution glow drivers: I would be wary about using LiPo's for a glow driver only because LiPos should only be charged when removed from the aircraft. I have found that my glow driver battery is often difficult to get to, which is why the NiCad packs used by the McD are so convenient.

NOPE. Just have a GOOD NiCad 4.8v pack. The McD "pulses" the plugs and "fools" them into thinking they are seeing 1.5v... this has to do with the "duty cycle" and is not something you need to worry about with ONE EXCEPTION:: This pulsing DOES induce RF! I NEVER had a problem even on 72 Mhz, but 2.4 Ghz equipment will be completely bulletproof. I would recommend you use 2.4 radio equipment for this reason (and no less than a dozen other reasons)...[;)]

RE: UMS Evolution Radial Care and Operation
Hi Tom, Can you give me some idea as to the performance of the 9-99? My consideration is to power my 25% Mr. Mulligan. It currently has a DA100, which is a bit of overkill, but it WAS a golden age racer, afterall. The 9-99 would fit the plane perfectly, as far as size and balance, but having flown a 9 cylinder glow in the past (Technopower) I found they do NOT like to be run at full throttle for any extended periods... at least this was true of the Techno; it would overheat and eventually begin to shed parts...[:o] What prop are you spinning and at what RPM? Did you break it in on the bench using regular oil content glow fuel? Now flying with 5-6% oil? Any real-world handling and flying info you can provide would be appreciated. THANKS

RE: Composite-Arf 33% Gee Bee R2 - First Flight - Pics - Videos - L@@K
Mike, I blocked up the fuselage so that it was perfectly level in both axis than set the angle protractor against the bottom of each wing half, adjusting the flying wires until I had achieved the desired and equal dihedral measurements. Using the leading edge radius as a datum point would probably be more accurate than my method, but my crude bubble/angle device required I rest it against a flat surface on the wing. The comment on the video was that I had adjusted my rudder mix on my radio after flight #1 and 2 that day (this was flight 3). It is a good idea to mix right rudder deflection with throttle, but the amount is VERY subtle. On flight one, I had FAR too much right rudder and at full throttle the airplane was rolling to the right. I reduced this substantially prior to flight #2 and straight line stability was much-improved. However, the rudder/throttle mix is NOT a linear relationship, so prior to flight #3 I adjusted the mix offset - which is to say, the point at which rudder begins to mix with throttle. With a 150 size engine and neutral rudder, the airplane WILL in fact crab to the right at lower throttle settings due to the molded in right fin; then at full throttle, it will torque to the left. Rudder mixing is necessary to offset these tendencies. These mixes will vary depending upon engine and propeller choice, so it will be an individual adjustment and preference on the part of each pilot.

The Granvilles Brothers and Howell Miller designed the Gee Bee racers with 4.5 degress of dihedral. This is in reference to zero degrees dihedral; if the wings were absolutely flat. Increasing the dihedral one degree to 5.5 degrees (this is EACH WING PANEL; 5.5 degrees above zero) will improve stability without altering scale fidelity noticeably. You must use a degree protractor (see earlier posts) or there are laser devices that are even better. Harbor Freight carries both.
