A sales manager for a company we represented had a quote I liked but I would not credit him as the author - he was not that smart.. I ask for only two things in life, an unfair advantage and a second chance.

RE: Futaba 6EX... am I doing something wrong?
I use the 6EX on both a 3 ch and 4 ch plane. The 3 ch plane set-up that works for me. Channel 1 to Rudder, channel 2 to elevator and channel 3 to throttle. On the 4 ch plane, 1 to ailerons, 2 to elevator, 3 to throttle and 4 to rudder. Throttle must be on 3. Also, make sure throttle trim to ch 3 is set at zero value and stick is all the way off. Good luck. I really like my 6EX. Roger

RE: Flight Simulator
I have both the RealFlight 5.5 and Clearview sims. As a newbee I found more trainer type planes to use with the Clearview sim but the RF5.5 sim makes it very easy to modify wind conditions such as direction, strength and turbulense. So each has their strengths and weakness. Clearview goes for abot $40 for the license and about $20 for a Tx or cable to use your own Tx. RF 5.5 or the new version 6 will set you back a $200. Clearview url: http://www.rcflightsim.com/ (also given by previous poster phoenixangel) RealFlight url: http://www.realflight.com/index.html There is another free sim, FMS, that a lot of people like. I don't have a url but maybe someone else couls post one. Good luck

RE: Buddy Boxs
Hi Wattmeter! I use a Futaba 7C also. I found a T4YF Futaba trainer box on Ebay for $10 plus shipping about $7. It is only a box and not a transmitter and uses the power from the master trainer transmitter. All you will need is a trainer cord with the square micro plug on each end. It works great with my 7C. I did have some confusion getting it set up but once I undestood that the "INH" means inhibit in the 7C programming, so set the trainer function in the 7C programming to "OFF" and it is ready to connect to the buddy box. Once the trainer box is connected the "OFF" function sets itself to "ON" - a liitle confusing. You connect the two together with the trainer cord and on the 7C, the lights on the T4YF will come on and your ready to go. I also bought a new Futaba 6EX 2.4 on Ebay for about $82 and it also will connect to the 7C with the same cord. It works really great also. I had two grandsons visit this summer and they did real well as a copilot on my Flylite. Good luck. RT

RE: Are you a member of a club?
I am not a member. I started flying electrics in my open field of about 2 1/2 acres last fall. I have concluded that my area will best support parkflyer size aircraft. If I decide to go to larger aircraft I will probably join a club. But for now i will fly with the 'Turkeys'. I had a hen Turkey hanging out around the house and field all summer. She got so brave as to hang out in the field while I was flying. Could't tell if she was laughing.

RE: RealFlight Recordings
There is a program called "Fraps" that can convert your RF recordings. Try their website www.fraps.com and download a demo copy. It allows you to record 30 second segments. I think the purchase price is around $40. It has been a while since I messed with it. You will probably get the best results recording a RF playback than doing it directly flying during a sim session. But it probably depends on your computer though. Good luck!

RE: HZ Champ or Ember 2?
The flying area looks a little tight particularly the width. I would pick standing by the two trees in the first picture on the bank in the background. I fly the Champ but I have nearly three acres to work with. You could do it with a Champ but you would probably do well to find a park first to do your initial flying. Good luck. Roger

RE: RF G5.5 Plane
One post suggests downloading trainers from the Knife Edge site and I would add finding the HZ Champ there to download. I put this on my RF5 and mapped the controller to be the same the one as provided by HZ. I mapped channel 1 as "Channel 4 Yaw" (rudder) and mapped channel 4 as a "Channel 9". I just put something on the channel 4 (left stick -side movement) so it had no effect on control. The plane flew exactly as it would using the right stick to control up/down and side to side rudder - just like the HZ Champ's controller. It really helped both my grandson and myself learn to fly the Champ. I have also become a huge fan of the HZ Champ as a starter plane. Good luck. For the aileron training you can't beat the Nexstar trainers on RF. Roger

RE: flight simulators
ORIGINAL: BrianArtea How many hours or days did it take you before you actually landed a plane safely with a sim?
I am using both Real Flight 5.5 and Clearview. I was accomplishing landings within a couple hours or so. I did not really keep track. However, I stuck to the boring high wing trainers and did endless number of touch and go's always trying to duplicate an actual landing pattern. Once you are able to land regularly then try the warbirds. If you are flying warbirds to start with, they be real intimidating, for sure. Keep at it and don't get discouraged. It is cheaper to crash digital planes than real planes - I know that for sure. Good luck and keep at it. Roger

RE: When did you start into rc?
I had started building static models at age 11. The LHS carried Strombecker wooden kits that you had to finish forming the airfoil shapes with a small sanding block furnished in the kit. I advanced to a balsa stick frame model of an F101 covered with tissue like paper. My cousin and I decided if we built a small hook in the nose under the fuse we could stretch a long rubber band and launch it. We bought a couple bags of heavy rubber bands and looped them together to form a giant rubber band, maybe 20 or 30 feet - relaxed. Hooked our magic launcher to the F101 stretched the rubber band maybe 75' or so and let fly. The plane took off like a shot went nearly straight up, never releasing from the rubber band and came back staright down. [:)] I now had an F101 that the fuse started at the wing. We then decided to try a hand launch. The highest spot was an access door in the very peak of our barn. We called the flight crash and burn. I held the plane and my cousin lit the tail on fire and I hand launched it. If there were problems in the area most people came to talk with my cousin and myself.[:D] I then bought a control-line airplane we never flew, even after removing the sod and creating a ring the diameter of the control line as a landing strip. I gues we were at least optimistic enough to think we would actually be attempting a landing. Last fall at age 71 I soloed a Flyzone SkyFlyMax. Those flights gave me pictures to do a Crash and Rebuild post. [:D] I know have over 5 hours logged on my HZ Champ. Thinking about giving a go at the SkyFlyMax again. Maybe it has gotten over its love affair with trees. [:o][:)]

RE: BNF Recommendation
Have you looked at the Eflite Apprentice? It is available as a PNP where you provide, receiver, battery and radio. (for the record: Plug-N-Play) The plane gets a lot of comments on its ruggedness and repairability. Take a look at this link http://secure.hobbyzone.com/catalog/HZ/index/index_park_flyers_pnp/EFL2900.html I also have a less then smooth field. I roll it with my lawnroller behind my lawn tractor as well as putting weed-be-gone on the weeds. This gives a little smoother landing area. You could also go to larger diameter wheels that would roll easier on the grass. Good luck and happy flying. Roger

RE: Favorite Beer.
ORIGINAL: mechanizeddeath What, no Coors? Anyway, it depends on the cost and packaging. Of the common American beers, Coors is my favorite. Of the cheap "dirty thirty" beers, probably Keystone. Malt liquor 40's, either Magnum or Colt 45, it depends. I used to really like Red Dog but I haven't seen that in years. My favorite beer regardless, and favorite quality beer is Bell's Oberon. Unfortunately it is seasonal (summer only) but it is slightly similar to Blue Moon in my opinion, so I drink that during the off months. I also enjoy the retro/hipster beers such as PBR, Schlitz, and Blatz.
It is interesting that Pabst does not own or operate a brewery in the US. The brands they own such as PBR, Schlitz and Blatz are all brewed, to their receipe under contract to other breweries. For a lite beer I like Miller MGD64 and for an ale Sam Adams. Our friends from Canada are right - they have great beer in Canada.! Roger

RE: Flyzone SkyFlyMax rebuild
I did rebalance. Actually, I balanced the plane when I bought it and it needed 1/4 oz in the nose. It now balances with a 1/4 oz on the tail. I had expected to have to use more weights but the 1/4 oz was plenty. Although tail was riding a couple inches higher than the nose on the balancer that little weight did the trick. A difference in the greater distance from the CG on the tail as compared to the previous nose location. I am concerned about a deep dent in the leading edge of the starboard wing. I am considering cutting out a square and glueing in a piece of foam and shaping it to the wing. Maybe the ding does not matter. Thanks for the reminder. Roger

RE: Flyzone SkyFlyMax rebuild
I have to admit. I considered the foam grave yard. Gee, I could have gone out and bought bigger and better but the secrtary of treasury wanted to be sure the next plane was "tree resisdent". Actually, other than the few scratces and dents I think it is better than new. The servo board was a very thin board that tended to move around a little and the landing gear was an almost stiff wire that would bend when landing in grass. Thanks for the comments. Roger

Flyzone SkyFlyMax rebuild
I tried to get one last flight before the snow started last November. I got one flight that included a take-off, 7 minutes of flight and no landing. A very tall Cedar tree chose to try a taste of foam. One 32 ft extention ladder, 24 ft pole and lots of poking got most of the plane out of the trees. The landing gear remain wedged in the tree. I remember reading in one thread on ARF's not providing any building experience - well, does rebuild count? Below are a couple crash and rebuild pictures. Now I am anxiously waiting for spring and another chance to fly The SkyFlyMax.

RE: Is real flight worth the money?
I have both the RF G5.5 and Clearview sims. I like them both. There are some features in the RF that are easier to use such as setting of wind speed and direction along with turbulence. It helps to learn in takeoffs and landings in a realistic wind condition. Another feature I like is the visible animated wind sock so you can actually see where the wind direction is from. I also think there are far more airplanes available with RF both in their free downloads as well as the swap site. Many of the planes come with active flaps, retractable gear and other bells and whistles. All this is at a price though. Clearview has a lot of 3 and 4 channel trainer planes good for us new guys. The graphics are good and the planes fly realistic. So for a 39.95 license and a $15 to $20 usb controller you have a lot of controller. I don't know if my thoughts help or not but if I had to do it over I would probably still buy the RF G5.5 sim but I also really like the Clearview too. Good luck!

RE: G Flyer Owners
Wow you are in some really scenic country! I did not find anything on the RCU site but found some information on two HZ planes. Take a look at these two. HZ Super Cub http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1378716 HZ Champ http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=15181096&postcount=582 I probably won't adapt my Champ but I will probably put floats on my Flyzone SkyFlayMax. I will get it done before next winter. As I am new to this, I don't think I will learn the 'Max' on floats. There are so many days that the air is dead still in the winter that I want to be able to fly then. Multi use for my hunting outerwear. Post pictures if you do something. Roger

RE: Champ or Mini Super Cub?
I would first get a sim as the other post has said. You can go from free, like the FMS, or the high end like Real Flight 5 and others. I like Clearview at only 39.95 and a controller for about $20. Great graphics and a good choice of trainers. I have both the RF G5.5 and Clearview. I would chose the Champ, actually I already have as I got about 2 hours of flight last fall before the snow. If you check other threads on the Mini Super Cub most people are not liking the ACT feature. I don't have a Mini Super Cup so I cannot say one way or another. I am happy with the Champ and may buy two of them this summer for a couple grandsons. Good luck and post back what you decide. There are a lot of helpfull people on this site. I am new at this too. Looks like it is the Pack and your Steelers. A lot of people predicted that outcome. As a former Wisconsinite I still have green/gold in my blood. Should be a really good game. Since I will be in the Wildwood area of your state on Superbowl sunday will need to find a TV to watch. The snow on my deck basically came down since last Thursday.
