Help I'm looking for DHC-3 Otter plans
I'm looking for a set of plans for a DHC-3 Otter. I would like to find plan for 80+". But I've yet to find any size plans for the Otter. Does anyone know of plans out there for the Otter? Thank you Robert

RE: Hangar 9 Twin Otter Wing Strut Problem
I had the same problem. This is what I did. I had to cut a small slot on the outboard side of each nacelle for strut clearance. I also had to slot the hole in the strut about 1/8". This is with the strut all the way into the fuse. The next problem I'm having is to get a good fix with the landing gear fairings. I might have to trim the fairing around the wing strut. Also if you look at page 39 step 7 of the manual, you can see the strut does stick out of the nacelle. It would be nice if they said something about cutting a clearance slot for the strut before the nacelle is glued in place!

RE: Super Sportster twin, short flight...
I have a Super Sportster 60 Twin that flys great on OS 55AX engines(when both are running). It's flys ok on one engine at 1/2 throttle, above 1/2 throttle the rudder loses the battle. I added one inch to the leading edge of the rudder, but it still needs a bigger rudder or a longer tail. I also added a 11" center wing section. I did use the RCM SS40 twin plans as a guide when building mine. Pictures 1&2 are after the first flight. Low and slow single engine. Picture 3 The new outboard right wing panel installed and ready for covering. Pictures 4&5 After 4 flights still airworthy. Three out of the four flights ended in single engine ops. The left tank was a problem and now seems to be working fine after being rebuilt.

RE: Super Sportster 60
This is what happened to mine when the right engine quit. I got low and slow and not enough rudder at full power. The right engine quit when the rear part of the muffler come off. It took about three weeks two fix it.

RE: Super Sportster 60
aa1a, I built a SS60 into a twin useing OS55AX engines. They pull it around at about 90 mph. Lands a little fast. Flys good on one engine, but mine runs out of rudder at about half throttle even with one inch added to the front of the rudder. When landing on one engine its best to keep a little speed. You don't what to get low and slow onb one engine.

The CG from the Flair manual "nose down by about 3 degrees when it is supported at a point 65mm back from the leading edge of the middle wing." Good luck on your maiden flight. Robert

RE: Jensen Ugly Stick Build
You picked one of the best planes for your first kit. Like Sean said, it's easy to build. Are you going to cut your own parts or get a lazer pack? Lazer works has a good short kit. He gives you diffent options for wing mounting along with center lines marked on the formers. Robert

RE: Jensen Ugly Stick Build
Got to test fly the stick last Sunday. I got one flight in, because the tail wheel wheelcollar came off and I had every size allen wrench but the size I needed. The flight lasted about eight minutes. It needed a fair amount of up trim and some right aileron. The plane flies very smooth with no bad habbits that I found. Great airplane. The Lozenge colors are had to see clearly on an overcast day. Yet it still looks great. Looking forward to putting more flights this one. Robert

RE: Here today, gone tomorrow
I've been buying kits three times faster then I can build them. Now a number of the kits in my inventory are no longer available. I have 29 kits and maybe 16 are still avaiable. I plan on building everyone of these kits. But as someone else said "you have to have kits build them". Robert

Flair DR1 Manual
I was woundering if anyone has a Flair DR1 manual they can copy or sale. My Dr1 is about 70% built and my manual is missing after moving. I called Radical RC which is the importer for Flair. They had no manuals and said they have problems getting parts from Flair. If I can't get a manual, I should be about finish it without a manual, but it would easier with a manual. Robert

RE: Jensen Ugly Stick Build
Tonight I removed the engine and engine mount. Install a smaller mount the reinstalled the engine very close to the firewall. This only moved the CG from the front of the spar to the back of the spar. The only thing I add to the front was tri-stock behind the firewall and fuel proof the tank compartment. One other thing is that all the tail parts from the lazer cut short kit are very light compaired big sticks I've built. This is how it turned out, so I'm just going to go with it. I'm shooting for doing the test flight on Nov. 28 or 29. Robert

RE: Jensen Ugly Stick Build
The OS61FX is 6.5 oz. heavier then the 46FX. The heavier engine and larger engine mount might be my problem. The RX battery(1800mah) is under the trailing edge of wing. This was as back as I could get it without cutting holes. I just checked the CG and it's balanced at 4" back from the leading edge(on the front of the main spar). I used a CG program I have and it shows the CG at 30% MAC. Next week I should have my radio back from Futaba. I'll fly it and see what happens.

RE: Jensen Ugly Stick Build
The CG is right on the main spar. I think its at 3.50 inches. I uesd the GP 60-120 engine mount. I'm sure if it's a lot heavier then the 40-60 mount. This might be part of the problem since the engine is mounted farther out from the CG.

RE: Jensen Ugly Stick Build
Sean, Thank you I have you to thank. Before reading this thread I never thought about building one. This just shows that some planes are timeless. I still need to add a white border around the insignia on the top of the wing. This is all covering, no decals(or should I say no decals were harmed in building of this plane). The wing Lozenge cover is from Hanger 9 - uesd on there D VII (part number Han4695). It comes in a one meter roll for $13.29 I had to use 4 four rolls. My plane came out very nose heavy. I'm using a OS 61 and had to add six oz. of lead to the tail. Why it can out so nose heavy I'm net sure, unless the nose is a little longer then it should be. It was built per the plans, very little mods. Robert

RE: Jensen Ugly Stick Build
After reading about this plane, I just had to build one. I used the Lazer Works short kit and RCM Plans, which made for a fast build. From start to finsh was only 4 week. I still need to test fly it when I get my radio back from Futaba. Robert

RE: Stand off scale JU52-3M
Ram-bro Based of the length of the fuselage the wing needs to be 80.5" Got more work done on the fuselage. The plan is to finish the fuselage, then start on the wing. 1) Covering on the bottom of the fuselage is finished in skyblue. 2) Cover on fuselage completed with olive drab, dove gray, and black. Decals are from Major Decals. 3) Elevators are covered in Cub yellow. 4) Rudder is covered in Cub yellow. 5) Elevators and rudder is taped in place.

RE: Sportster Bipe 60
I now have fourteen ten minute flights on the bipe. With a APC 14x6 prop, the plane has unlimited vertical performance and is also much faster. After putting on the APC prop, I had a problem with aileron flutter because of the faster speed. Sealing the hinge gaps has fixed the problem. I have had no other problems and the bipe flies great as long as you keep the speed up. Flying slow is not it's thing!

RE: Stand off scale JU52-3M
I looked at the Ford Tri-motor but with the engines mounted below the wing, I thought this would be a lot more work to make a strong engine mount. I also looked at some of the Italian tri-motors and didn't like them very much. The JU52-3M had a longer run and was used more then any other tri-motor. It was used as an airliner, transport, and a bomber.

Stand off scale JU52-3M
This is my Hanger 9 Super stick that I bought in 1998. In 2002 it was recovered and kit bashed a little. Last month the rear fuselage broke at the leading edge of the stab. The stab was only being held in place by the vert. fin. After removing the covering and fixing the fuselage. I thought this would be a good time for more kit bashing. My plan was to make a tri-motor. After looking at different books on tri-motors, I decided the JU52-3M would be the easiest. I downloaded a 3 view of the JU52-3M and started to figure a scale. I used the fuselage to get the scale of the wing and stab. For now, I'm not using any plans and I'm using "That looks about right". The stab on the fuselage is to small and was removed. I a new stab and fin were build and installed. Then I added a top cabin and cockpit area. The Fuselage has been turned upside down to make it a low wing. Spec. Wing span 80.5" Fuselage 52" Stab 28" Engines 1- OS 32F used 2 - OS 35Ax new

RE: Stand off scale JU52-3M
The wing has been cut down from 54" to 27". I plan to install tapered outboard wing panels. I had to add pieces to the firewall to fit the 32 engine mount. Due to the holes for a 60 mount and the hole for the fuel tank. The firewall has been painted with Top Flite paint and the engine is installed.
