RE: .12 Rigger Kits for CHEAP!
No, he's not at the Gat Nat's. Tom doesn't usually travel to races outside of his distrct and their season is over. Don Ferrette ought to be able to let people in but I don't know for sure as I don't know how much power Tom gave him. If anyone from there would be at the Gas Nat's it would have been him but he's home. I offered him my help on 12hydros but he hasn't taken me up on it yet.

RE: Water Pickup keeps breaking
How deep are you running it? It only has to be low enough so that it's just below the bottom of the hull, any lower and it could be the force of the water ripping it off. Pictures help.

RE: .12 Rigger Kits for CHEAP!
The sponson bottoms are made oversize so that there is an overhang to help them break loose from the water. On each side you'd have a good 1/16" or more if you got them centered. You might see that in the shots that I posted. Keep what does hang off the rear. When I get mine done I can post a shot of what I did plus other little things that I made my boat mine. That's one thing that I love about the kit, it allows you to play with things a little here and there without worrying about messing things up.

RE: .12 Rigger Kits for CHEAP!
I'm the one that's using body clips to hold the tubes in place, the only one so far but I've had others ask me about it. To answer your other questions: 1) Yes, the booms come with thew kit but rumor is that Joe may offer some carbon fiber ones sometime soon. The ones provided are fiberglass. 2) There are supposed to be a few guys working on cowls but haven't seen any done yet. The Top Speed or VS-1 cowls are the expensive way to go. Get a canopy from a plane and cut it to fit and mount it on lite ply. 3) The cable length will vary according to the strut that you use. The kit was built with the Grimracer Miss Vegas turn fin in mind. The one that Joe offers is really close in size and shape to the MV version. I don't know about other parts such as the strut and rudder as I don't have a MV, just one of their turn fins that I bought for my Sport .12 hydro. The .18 will work as long as the pull-start assembly is removed. You might have to cut a little off the crank to make the cover fit. 4) No hopper tank needed. The 4 oz. Sullivan SS-4 is fine. There isn't a lot of room up there anyway for a hopper tank as things are kind of tight as it is. One update from Rod Geraghty. If you're running a high HP and RPM mill like the Nova Rossi, you can remove the side overhangs on the sponsons but he hasn't said anything yet about the tub. Leave the rear overhangs on the back of them though. Sport engine guys should keep them as is. As far as the Aquacraft .18 since you may ask anyway, it's got a lot of torque so you might not need the overhangs on the sides. I'm all covered with dust right now as I was just downstairs a little while ago sanding mine off. Got one almost done now and have to do the other yet. Those with lower powered engines will find that it sure won't hurt to remove the overhang where the turn fin is mounted at. Some people are using the threaded brass inserts instead of using the screws that Joe has with the fin. 6-32 inserts should be the right size but don't take my word for it yet. I might have some of those inserts hanging on the wall. You can get them from Du-Bro.

RE: high % nitro
John Otto of Technology Fuels will mix up just about anything that you want. I don't really know how to get hold of him except for the IMPBA site. Rumor is that Titches Brew in Texas will nix you up what you want. I'm sitting on 2 gallons of 65% but it isn't going anywhere quite yet. Once you get up over 50% there isn't that much of a speed advantage unless you're going for a SAW record when you're trying to eke out every 1/10 MPH. Between 45 and 65% you might see a gain of 2-3 MPH. The higher the nitro, the more sensitive your needle can be when it gets hot and humid.

It takes much longer to break in as they use a harder piston ring than those in the Zen's. If you want a faster break-in then you can put a Zen ring in there.

RE: Vintage
Sterling was still around in the `80's as they were still making a few things, one was an airboat with 3 wheels on it called the Puddle Jumper. Some of the parts look like Dumas pieces, I wonder if they made the hardware for Sterling. The servos are ancient also, either Kraft or Heathkit linears. I wish that someone would bring them back! It would be a slow boat if restored. I'd toss out the engine and replace it with a low-dollar electric motor, ESC and batteries. It wouldn't need much as you wouldn't want it to run over scale-like speeds.

The word is to use the 1" diameter pipe kit from CC Racing on the RCMK's for best performance. Me. I'm cheap so I'm using what I have so far but am also looking at what American RC Boats has. I just can't see the big bucks that they want for some of these tuned pipe setups.

RE: new boat problems
OK, this is the gas boat forum, the nitro forum is one flight up! [:D] Seeing how I do both, hopefully I can help you. What it appears to be to me is that the carb is running lean. OK, from there, look at your glow plug to see how it looks if there are any coils left. Messed up clean coils are a sure sign of a lean condition. When you start it onshore, blip the throttle. If it revs quickly, it's lean. You want a slight bog when you hit the throttle as the load of the prop in the water will lean it further out. Being in Illinois the weather is a little cooler there right now so if you ran it in the past few days so cooler air needs a richer high-speed needle setting. You're also getting colder water into the cooling system which makes nitro boats run like crap this time of the year.

Try the IMPBA site, District 12. www.impba.net if you need that. You can also check the toolbar at the top of the page under RC Community the People & Places. Do a search for boaters in the Charlotte area from there.

RE: WHY DOES MY PROP ALWAYS SNAP
Check your cooling system from back to front. A spare piece of cooling line comes in handy for that as you can blow through it to find where it isn't flowing at. In some places it doesn't take much to clog things up. I don't have much in the way of spare parts around for the boat, mostly things that you can buy in Oz.

Try your low-speed needle at 2 turns out and your high-speed at 1 turn out. I've forund out up here for some reason that several of us have had to go at least another 1/8 turn out on the high-speed needle. MGB has a good article on setting your carb: http://www.modelgasboats.com/Magazine_Content/Tech_Articles/Carburetor_Tuning/

RE: can you believe it???
That's a crock of doo-doo. If you own your home, part of it is covered by your liability insurance. NAMBA covers you wherever you run your boat. Although he sounds like he may know RC planes as he knows about the AMA, they aren't a boat sanctioning body. Try entering a race by telling them that you're an AMA member. That would go over about as well as if I went to a flying field and showed them my IMPBA card! Do they fly planes at this park?

RE: can you believe it???
Were you caught on radar? I didn't see any speed specified on the warning. Some lakes around here do have speed limits of 45 MPH, mostly because they're big and have some fast boats on them. When you see blowers and fuel injectors reaching for the sky it must be hard to keep them from mashing the pedal. Try working with the Parks and Recreation Department and hopefully someone besides this guy who had to justify his paycheck by writing you up. The boat was run in a BS Lake like the ticket said as this is exactly what the warning is!

RE: WHY DOES MY PROP ALWAYS SNAP
I glued some #4 washers on top of the tabs to keep them from breaking a second time. At $38.99 a pop to replace the box, if I have to, I'll make one out of wood. Me second box is literally falling apart by itself. I found out that by removing the tabs on the radio box lid and then using rubber bands over the lid then around the tabs on the box it took stress off them. I contacted Grimmie after the first box fell apart and never got a reply. So far I've also replaced the flex cable with a Hughey cable, the drive dog and flex cable collet with Octura pieces and one connecting rod. The radio system went and was replaced by a Futaba 2-PL and the trim tabs are now Offshore Electrics adjustables. Of course I replaced the stock plastic prop with both Octura and Aquacraft Grimracer's to find which one the boat liked.

RE: WHY DOES MY PROP ALWAYS SNAP
You tightened the nut down too far. I had that happen to me the first time that I tried to start mine. Either don't tighten it down so much or put a piece of fuel line bewtween the prop and the nut. With all of the money that you've spent on plastic props you should have gone to a metal one by now, it would have been cheaper and safer. There are a lot of bolts on the boat that are tighter than they should be. It's a wonder that you haven't broken the tabs on the radio box by now.

I used the strut from Octura but I see that Joe now has one on his site for use on the boat. He's also added a rudder with a water pick-up. This is similar to the one that I have except mine is in beryllium copper. http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/proddetail.php?prod=oct-struts . The skeg needs to be cut off.
