RE: Sig Dope/Paint thinner
ORIGINAL: smithcreek You can buy Randolph dope thinner from Aircraft Spruce in gallons. Just buying one gallon you will save more than enough money for shipping.
Not trying to be argumentative, but a quart of butyrate is 11.90 and a gallon is 42.70. Gallon worth in quarts is 47.60. That’s a difference of 4.9. I believe has mat fee is like 25.00. Cheaper to buy it by the quart. John
ORIGINAL: RCPAUL I never wondered what the lite ply was in GP kits. I wanted to know how you could tell the ply from the balsa since they both felt and weighed the same! Paul
LOL. I'm in the process of building a PT 20 to teach my daughter to fly and I don't know how a 20 is going to fly it. Weighs a ton and all the ribs did feel like ply. As a matter of fact, lite ply would have weighed less. [:D] John

RE: Confused
I hear ya and will try all of this next time I fly, but for the life I me, I'm confused. Week ago, same plane, pretty much same conditions and she was flying great! Vertical up lines only needed right rudder to compensate torque (in both directions). Tail slides were just beautiful a couple 3 - 4 plane lengths. Loops nice and round tracking fairly well and stall turns great as well. So far, the explinations seems to be the only logical one?????? Great to hear from you Gene. You doing o.k.? The School Boy build kinda tinkered out. I have a hard time building in the flying season. Been heading to the field a couple of times a week and flying till dark, so it doesn't leave much room for building. Also been flying my Powered Parachute when conditions allow. Life is good! Take care. John

RE: Whats up with kits?
ORIGINAL: Gray Beard then a scratch/plans build of the old CG Extra. Gray Beard, When you cut this, cut 2, one for me! [:D] I agree with you and it was the best flying airplane I have ever owned. Mine had a OS .91 Fx and it was a great combo. Flat spins looked like pancakes. Sadly one day I was playing with the cg using the battery and failed to secure it and in a snap manuver, she came unplugged. Full bore straight in. Hugh debris field. Fortunatly there were many witnesses. I would have hated to have a crash like that and I be the only one to see it. [:)] I have a laser cutter so maybe we could work something out. I also have my plans, but since I didn't build the wing, I didn't trace the ribs. Putting tapered wing ribs in cad for laser cutting is very time consuming. BTW, cowl, canopy and wheel pants are still available from Fiberglass Specialities. I make my own wheel pants. John

RE: Confused
Not sure what you mean by "inner wing". Too many attempts, 15 - 20, with the exact same results. Wings had to have been level in some of those attempts, but it always pulled to the direction as indicated. I will try the coming towards me and going away. I agree on the thrust but that would have only helped on the left to right up lines. Right to left and it would have been worse! Mount and firewall are tight. No, there was no cross wind. Wind was zero. John

Confused
O.K. tonight I was flying a Funtana 90 that has 4 -5 hours air time. Something strange was happening that I have never experienced. Plane flying from left to right on the up lines it pulled to the left. Torque so you add right rudder or right thrust, but plane flying from right to left, on the up line plane pulled to the right. Pulled to the left in one direction and right in the other direction. What in the world would cause that? Other than that, nothing seemed wrong! John

RE: Supertigre 3000
There is no remote NVA. It is a perry carb. Will just tear it down to clean. The fuel is fine. 2 flights (1) 1 hour and (1) 30 minutes prior to shutting down worked flawless. After it dead sticked, I could not get fuel to draw at all. Open throttle wide open and put thumb over venturi & turn prop, no fuel. The needle valve seemed real loose. Meaning it turned very easy with little to no resistance. This past Sunday, I put another needle valve in it and I could at least get it to draw fuel and it would run WOT, but as soon as you started to close it down, she would cut off. There is a rubber O ring inside the needle valve that creates the resistance. Most others have some type of ratchet. The O ring does not seem to be replacable and perry does not sell one. Just new needle valves. Where it sits, the edges of the outershell of the NV are crimped around it like a drink can, with the O ring to the inside. John

RE: Supertigre 3000
Thanks for the responses guys. Everything I have read as well as Red Max Super T fuel, 12% is the number and as I said, up till it stopped in mid flight, I have had no problems with it. After starting it on the ground WOT, if I richen it, it still cuts off as soon as I start closing the throttle. WOT on the ground it runs fine (meaning that rpms are good), just when I close the throttle any, it dies. Guess what makes it so confusing is the fact that it was all of a sudden. The flight or 2 the same day this occured were without incident. I disconnect the vent line via a tee in it durning fill-up (prevents pitts muffler from filling with fuel) so it is open. But, the nipple on the muffler may be blocked. I will check. Also, I did change glow plugs to no avail. Again, it was the suddeness that puzzles me. 2 flights no problem, 3rd flight half way through she dies and I cannot get it to run again or draw fuel. Same fuel????? Week or so later, I can get it to run but only WOT. John

Supertigre 3000
Have a situation that came up on a Supertigre 3000. Have been flying it most of the summer on a Stinger. It has a perry carb and I did all the right stuff to make it run (large fuel lines, drilled out clunk, 12% oil, 5% nitro). It has run about 2 gallons this summer with no problem. A couple of weeks ago, she went dead in the air. After landing I tried to restart and could not get fuel to the carb. Thumb over barrel and nothing. Did notice that the needle turned very easy. There is a rubber O ring in it (built in meaning I don't think it's removable at least Perry doesn't sell them). Checked all the tank set up and it is fine and holding pressure (no leaks). Engine still would not draw fuel. I put another needle in (much more snug) and I can at least get it to run wide open and it runs good. Just as soon as I close the throttle down 1/4 way, she dies. Line still has fuel in it. Did this for about an hour and I'm at wits end. Any ideas? John

RE: Doculam
I too would be interested in any info about painting. I tried the method I read about (clean very good with acetone and use Rust-Oleum for plastic). Now it covered very good and was light, but you could not put tape on it. All tape (masking, blue, low tack and fine line) I tried pulled it up. One other method I did not try was wet newspaper? John

RE: VRCS Glory Days in Julian NC
I put 5 more flights on it yesterday. More down thrust and raised the trailing edge. Much better now but it still wants to climb some. Carl really designed those things to lift. Without the serious climb you saw, down close to the ground she really looks like a pylon racer. [:D] It will do continous loops. Also flew my electric Pageboy yesterday and stuffed it. The wing popped off. Held on by a magnet. Obviously not strong enough. Not much damage and the wing just fluttered down, so no damage to it. Take Care John

RE: Mattel Pulse Radio
Hey Jaymen, great to hear from you. Been a while since you have been around. Sent you an e-mail with this question and got a reply that you no longer worked there? Anyway, the unit in question with the flight pack is one I purchased from you some years ago. It came with a 3 cell nicad pack. That not fully charged is 3.6 volts where as a single lipo is 3.7 volts. Fully charged, both are over 4 volts. Any issue with that? The other question is the transmitter batteries. Will lipos work in that (assume I need a regulator since voltage will be 11.1) and what mah rating? Thanks, John

It's Not 1/2 A
I know it's not 1/2 A, but it's what has been keeping me from 1/2 A. +, this is where I usually hang out. Don't really know any of the guys in large scale. [:D] Stinger 120 w/a Supertigre 3000. Flew it today after a recover job (last flight was 2006) and it was great. 4 flights till an axel broke on landing even though the landings were gentle. Flies like it's on rails. Actually makes me look pretty good........ John

Orv. that is exactly what I have done on one unit, but my other one came with a 3 cell nicad (previous owner), so I was wondering if it would be o.k. to run it with a 1 cell lipo without the diode. As you can see, many different responses and I'm curious if all of them are the Mattel units??? Thanks, John
