RE: reasons for use of landfill
Our local club has been building a new flying site at an old city landfill for about a year now. As for construction, you'll need to have a contact with your states Dept. of Environmental Quality as they are more than likely the ones you'll need to appease first. The major issue with old landfills is methane gas. In our situation, the landfill has been dormant for nearly 30 years with a "cap" of red sand/dirt that is supposedly between 3 and 5 feet deep (atop the garbage). The first issue was with moving dirt for the construction. You can bring in FILL dirt, but you are not allowed to CUT any of the existing cap. They probably will not allow you to "penetrate the cap" with things such as power poles, and without a doubt you will not be able to build an enclosed structure on the site due to the methane gas issue. So once you get approval from all those involved, you'd probably want to have a topographic survey done of the area in order to find the best location/orientation of your runway/flightline/parking and access road(s) that will require a minimal amount of dirtwork (read FILL) yet provide adequate drainage of the site. Also, don't be surprised when you find the area to be particularly "spongy". I can tell you that in about 6 months of using a 40' x 40' area for our open area "shed"which is a pitched roof on 4 corner posts that are in 55 gallon plastic drums filled with sand (remember the penetration issue?) the ground has settled just from walking and congregating in that area and has required us to add fill material to keep it from holding water. Hope that helps.

RE: Magic
Cool! A Magic 20 thread that is current! I built this one from the MK kit back in the mid-late 80's. I dug it out of the stack last week, installed a new flight pack battery and used my JR7202 radio to communicate with the original Airtronics receiver and 94831 servos. Flew it yesterday for perhaps its 9th or 10th flight. It's fast and smooth with the old OS 25FSR. 3#~6 oz. without fuel. You'll enjoy your Magic.[:D]

Latest jet- The Vortex 32
Has anybody seen one of these in person? Supposed to weigh in at 4.6 lbs.-I sent a fellow modeler to the Nitroplanes site to take a look as he's a turbine type, said it looked very similar-perhaps just a couple inches smaller in wingspan to a turbine jet kit from Spain from a few years back that another fellow modeler built and flew a couple weeks ago......at about 17 lbs.! RE: Rutan 74 Defiant
ORIGINAL: rgburn To anyone! Just received a NitroModels Rutan 74 Defiant ARF. Beautiful model with what appears to be great workmanship. However, due to my lack of knowledge the manual is not clear on how the two wings work. The one in the front is called the Canard. The one in the rear is the wing. I think I should set up the rear wing ailerons to act like norman ailerons in a standard airplane.Correct The front wing which they call the horizontal tail and is connected to what they call the rudder servos are really the elevators. Don't know why they'd call them the rudder servos but yes they are the elevators on the Canard If I am correct then they should both deflect down to make the Rultan go up and the opposite for down.Correct Is this correct? Roger that I assume the only rudder action, for turning, will be by the two back wing ailerons.the ailerons are like any other plane in that they will cause the plane to bank and turn. The only rudder steering will be the nosegear. Thanks for the info. RAy Burnett, rgburn@hills.net
I tried to answer your questions above in BOLD font but it didn't work.

I agree[:D] The red white and blue one with the stars is just a bit....how would you say...... "Pole Cattish" for me. The white one looks really nice, and with a little duct work for cooling *that* thing is begging for an OS Wankel! Rube *that* is scheduled to be "this" come next Monday[:)]

This should be an extensive thread on the Long EZ. If you will use the search function and search terms "Long and EZ" (no quotation marks) and set the search for more precise/exact using "and" "or" "not", search only topics and only in the subject line you will find a lot of info.
