RE: kadet senior
For WARHAWK...I used to fly at the old San Marcos strip...(now fully developed with houses, schools, malls, etc)..but still remember great times. If you send me your email or telephone ##, I'll check in when I get over there. I have in Oceanside. And, the attached pic shows the Viking Funeral of my beloved Kadet Dually...it was involved in a fatal mid-air. Came down like a B-17 over Dresden in 1944. Sniff Sniff

RE: kadet senior
I once had a Kadet Senior with a .40..but only flew it 2 or 3 times before going to an Enya .60. Much better. And then I bashed it into a twin with (2) LA .40's. What a rush!! I'll try to attach a picture of the Kadet Dually.

TELESPORT Kit Build....
Has anyone had any experience with the old Hobby Lobby Telesport?? I picked up an old kit and have it pretty well framed up and would like to get feedback from anyone who knows this design. Power used, final flying weight, flying habits, etc. I'll try to post a pic of my progress. Thanks Russ Verbael

RE: 4-Star 120....Optimum Engine???
[8D]One of the problems that John Sandy had was that the 4Star pilot was actually a tanker driver....so I am going to modify the beast and make it into a trainer....double the canopy and add another "qualified" pilot.[:D] I think I will go for a 120 or 140 4 stroke in the engine compartment. He dumped it at the Malmstrom AFB Open House last month....did not hurt it too bad.

4-Star 120....Optimum Engine???
I bought a mildly smushed 4* 120 and am looking for opinions on what engine I should send it back into the air with. I would like to have a powerful, fuel efficient unit...probably 4 stroke. Anxious for comments. [:D]

Yuma, (Arizona) has dual orientation
Our field (600 x 60 asphalt) in Yuma is layed out North-South and has dual flight lines/pits/parking areas. In the morning, we fly facing West and in the afternoon we move across the runway and fly facing East. The glaring sun is thus avoided. This is a great way to set up a field, but the down side is that more space is required for overflight, parking, etc. If you have access to public land, perhaps this "dual orientation" method would work.

Tri-Telemaster
Dwight Thanks for the great observations. I still (after lots of years) have 10 fingers and have stayed awake at night thinking what all three of those snarling little monsters would do to a couple of them if I got distracted. I decided that it is just too much hassle to have 3 engines....plus, I mostly did it as a personal dare just to see if I could. The Telly should be fun and a bunch safer with only 2 engines.

Triple Telemaster Flies !!
Yup! No doubt about it, a Telemaster 40 will fly with (3) .40's... I bought a garage sale Telemaster with a Fox .40 in it and decided to do a twin....but first, since the Fox .40 was already installed, I thought why not build nacelles/lay in a pair of LA .40's and not bother to remove the original Fox engine....(1 plus 2 equals 3 engines!!) And it worked! The little beast rolled about 10 feet and was airborne at a 60 degree climbout angle. Rolls, loops, stall turns, etc and then back into the landing pattern. A couple of slow flybys for the vultures watching and then a landing followed by a return taxi to the pits. A second hop confirmed that this was really happening. Technical stuff: nacelles slung under the wing with individual mini throttle servos and individual 6 oz fuel tanks. Tanks and servos are fully serviceable for fine adjustments. Engines are O.S. LA .40's with 10 x 5 props. Aircraft set up as a tail dragger. CG was set 1" behind the leading edge of the wing. 1100 ma power pack. So there you have it. The aircraft went back into the shop and I removed the original Fox engine and stripped everything down for a fresh layer of Monocoat and a return to the flight line as a Twin-Telly. This multi-engine stuff really is fun.

Triple Telemaster progress report
MyTri-Telemaster .40 is built, engines tuned/sync'd...so the day of truth is coming soon. My Garage Sale Tele has it's original Fox 40 on the nose and a pair of OS LA .40's mounted in nacelles. Individual throttle servos and fuel cells, 1200 ma battery pack. It will be interesting. If it makes it through a few test flights, I will refinish the airframe with nice new glitz. But first it must prove itself!

VK Cherokee still flying
My 15 yr-old VK Cherokee is a superb flyer and perhaps my all time favorite airplane I have ever enjoyed. Mine has an old Enya .60 that gives great vertical performance and at idle, purrs like a kitty. It is light, tough, has a great roll rate, is stable and easy to land, handles well in windy, gusty conditions up in Montana or here on the desert. If you can find one, grab it!! Russ V.

Falcons, Taurus's, etc.
Besides being superb flyers and beautiful birds, these models bring back rich memories from 25(+) years ago. Attached is a pic of my Taurus, last flown at MCAS (H) Santa Ana, Calif in 1977...I am redoing it and looking forward to reliving the old memories!

(Paid) Flight Instructors
I am really "whelmed" by the responses to this topic that I started and a bit surprised at the attitudes that seem to exibit disdain for suggesting that there is a place (and a market) for paid flight instructors. I have been around this hobby since 1964 and I fondly remember the good old days when comraderie and a universal sense of brotherhood existed throughout the hobby, no matter the level of expertise. Anyone coming out to the field was openly welcomed and if interested enough to get involved, was definately helped. (of course, there were no buddy boxes, few accomplished pilots, no computer simulators, etc....) Flight training as well as assistance in setting up the aircraft and systems came naturally. My assessment of how things are today concludes that obvious differences in equipment, avaibility of ARFs, ease of getting involved makes it very important to address the issue of a new guy's ability to obtain quality training at a pace that will fit his lifestyle and daily/weekly schedule. Getting quality training is a big bottleneck to our seeing even more folks becoming involved. I believe that if we can accept the concept of encouraging a willing, qualified flight instructor to provide focused, pre-planned, personalized training to a new guy willing to pay a nominal fee for the SERVICE, the hobby/sport will continue to boom. It seems to me that the above-described "instructor" and his well-briefed student should be a safer bet for the insurance actuaries than less structured relationships formed on the flight line to help the new fellow get his airplane in the air. I would like to call on the AMA to pay some attention to this aspect of the hobby and agree to some form of additional insurance for the Paid Flight Instructor. This additional coverage should not be cost-prohibitive and would be paid by the instuctors and their students. The paid flight instructor will provide a valuable service to newbies, clubs, hobby shops,....in general....everybody gains. ;)

(Paid) Flight Instructor
I have watched fellows come to the field with a new airplane, expecting to be treated with free instruction as a function of our great hobby. The expectation that someone will step forward to guide the "newby" often starts well but soon falls apart soon after the first few flights. Frequently, these folks end up with crashed airplanes and a foul taste for the hobby. For this reason, I believe that a "paid" professional flight instructor can and should be a part of the hobby. This is a guy that is willing to provide expertise, share the knowledge from long involvement in the hobby, and most important, be available to the new guy to conduct flight training in an organized, focused program designed to produce success. I would welcome input on this topic. :)
