RE: Extreme Whiplash (Not Whiplash Extreme!)
Chuck, Would you mind letting us know the zero fuel weight of your Whip with the .81? Thanks.

Plans/Drawings needed: WACO
Need to find WACO QCF-2 or UBF-2 drawings/detailed three-view or plans. I've checked the year 2000 Bob Pond Catalog, no F-2's. Where else should I look? Thanks for the help. ~John

1/12 Scale Pica F-82
Please post pix and comments as you build this bird. I just lost one due to elevator servo failure, but it was one that was built by someone else. I'd like to build my own. Are you considering rudders and/or retracts? Mine had neither and flew just fine on one engine. I put two Norvel .25 BigMig's in it. I think that I might put retracts in the next one and probably rudder control too. An awesome aircraft. I don't think the wing incidence was correct on mine. Flew level with a lot of down elevator even with downthrust on the engines. It balanced correctly. Maybe with all the thrust from the 25's it just had a trememdous amount of lift. It would really glide power off forever, nice and stable; I had the ailerons programmed as flaps as well. When hand launching this plane, I always briefed my helper to launch it about 20 degrees nose up and 20 to 30 degrees right angle of bank, otherwise it really wanted to torque roll and dive to the left.

Speed Freaks Wanted
Rudeboy, Yeah, a fuel stopper will be needed, along with a throttle linkage, and a zip tie or two to hold the rear of the tuned pipe to its bracket. It will also be necessary to put a couple more bolts in to hold that Jett 50 FIRE in place - Ha! I also have to install the JR 8411's, and gapseal the underside of the elevons - so I have a little bit more work to do. (Also have to finish my catapult!) I got that tank from a friend who didn't want to use it in an ARF. Its a Chinese tank, its 200ml or about 6.75 oz and has the letters "JDL" and "200ml" moulded into it. That's all I know about it, other than it is a perfect fit for the Whiplash, and gets me another .75oz of capacity. I'm going to make a bladder tank with it, using a baby bottle liner. Anybody know more about this tank? I'd like to know where to get some more. ~John

Rudeboy, I'm fortunate enough to belong to 3 R/C clubs, one of which has no noise limitations. That's where I'll fly the Whip. The paint came out great - but it is heavy. I'm quite concerned about it, so I'm working on a catapult. Won't be ready to fly the Whip' until I get the cat' working just right. I plan on eventually going to the 8.8 x 9.75 D-1 that SydClement is using on his Whip', so with that high pitch and the extra weight of the aircraft, I think the catapult will be necessary. I don't know the final weight yet, as I have to install the new JR 8411 servos and to the final balancing. I'll keep posting as I progress. Did you check out the other photos in my Gallery here on RCU? Which shot is your favorite? ~John

Speed Freaks Wanted
On the test stand (which Dub urges you to use to break in your engine), the Jett 50 started right up and ran great. I've got 5, 14 ounce tanks of fuel run through it. It keeps on getting higher and higher RPM's and I'm still running rich. 8.8 x 8.5 APC D-1 Pylon prop, recommended by Dub for break in. I use his high-rise header and a MACS 1340(?) pipe purchased from Dub. He tells you where to cut the header for break-in. After that, its up to you to tune the pipe for the prop/RPM you are using. The idle and transisiton are simply beautiful on this engine. You can move the throttle stick open and closed as fast or slow as you want and stop anywhere inbetween with wonderful smoothness to the engine. It is extremely loud! I have not had the dB meter on it yet, but am quite certain it won't pass at one of the fields that I fly at. The McCoy 9 plug is working great.

Went to Toledo
Spent all day at the Toledo show yesterday. Met Selwyn, and purchased 2 JR8411's for my Whiplash at his great price. He's a very nice chap. The servos were brand new, in the factory sealed plastic containers. The real deal. Looked around for sydclement all day, and when I wasn't looking, ran into him as I was just about to leave the show. He's a very friendly gentleman too. Syd showed me this super small GPS unit that will record max speed - sounds like just the ticket for onboard speed readings. He said to write if I ever need help or have questions - like so many of the wonderful folks in this hobby. Toledo was as good or better than the only other time I went 2 years ago. I spent all my allocated funds, and then some. I don't think most people need to spend more than one whole day there. (If you do, you better brings lotsa $$$, there are too many great things to buy!) There was a guy there with a giant scale tank that had a 25HP Koehler engine in it - for sale: $35K! The other giant scale planes were awesome as usual. Met and thanked Dub Jett for his help with my Jett 50 BSE FIRE. I highly recommend attending this show at least once in your modeling hobby days - kinda like I think everybody should go to the Oshkosh EAA Fly-In at least once as well. I'll go again.

Whiplash Locator
I'm interested in knowing where the flying Whiplashes are located. Anyone who is currently flying or will be soon(as winter ends) is requested to post his/her location. Or, if you know of a flying site where a Whiplash is being flown, you could post info on it. Lots of AMA clubs have their own websites, and that could be used instead of individual names. I.E.: "A Whiplash is flown by a member of the Siberian Propbusters, their website is: w-_-.itscoldhere.org". Perhaps guys like me who are about to finish and test fly their own Whiplashes would be able to visit and learn from others in their area who are already enjoying their Whiplashes. The plane is special enough to me to warrant driving to observe it being flown by someone with experience. I'm located in Cincinnati, OH, and hope to fly mine in about a month. ~John

Combat Arf
Glad to hear of your group starting up some combat. Mark April 26 & 27 on your calendars and come on down to the "Havoc Over Hamilton" RCCA Open B, Scale 2610 and SSC combat contest. If you want to see a lot of great combat, this contest will have it. If you're interested in flying in the contest, read about it at www.hawksrc.org or email me. You can check out the RCCA, the official AMA SIG for R/C combat at http://www.rccombat.com As far as combat ARF's for the .074, I'm not aware of any for that size engine. Most kit makers target the most popular classes of combat that the RCCA has set up. Guys flying those classes can have their points tallied in a National Points Standings. Also, the smaller planes with low power may be more difficult to launch with a streamer attached, and more difficult to fly if a streamer gets caught on the plane's wing. Most of the larger class combat planes are very easy to fly, even with multiple streamers hanging off their wings. Good Luck, you'll love flying combat.

Magnum 15 Needle Valve Problems
Dick, I don't have the Mag 15, but was wondering what the end of the needle valve looked like. Does it taper to a very thin, needle-like point, or is it somewhat blunt? What about the fuel inlet? I'm thinking that the sensitivity has a lot to do with the shape of either the needle valve or that inlet. Have you tried any other needle valves from other engines?

Need opinions for new combat plane
Sorry my pick for you is not on your list, but I would suggest the SPAD H.O.R. - Hell On Rails. If you can swing getting the foam wings you will be really happy! You can get some pretty cheaply from Mike Fredricks of Hat Trick Enterprises: www.hattrickrc.com The H.O.R. is really strong and easy to build - it flys better than anything on your list. Anything you can do to reduce the wing loading just makes the H.O.R. even better.

My new Jett .50
Hey Shawn, when you get your plane done, we'll have to see which plane is faster, yours or mine. I bought a BSE Jett 50 FIRE for my Whiplash! It has an ABC liner, DF timing and a MACS pipe. I've run it five times now, and am getting 18,600 on an APC 8.8 x 8.5 D-1 Pylon prop. (It is LOUD! Thankfully the HAWKS don't have a noise limit.) (I like the towel and the decals too!)

Will trade High $$$ engine(s) for finished new extreme speed design
I'm looking to work with someone to design a new high speed single engine or twin engine model aircraft. I'll trade one or two Cyclon 15PC4RC engines(like new, very low time) for a completed airframe that is capable of high speed(160mph, minimum) flight. These engines turn 32K flight RPM, put out 1.1BHP and weigh 119g. Probably need to look at a single blade prop for high speed flight. These engines sell for $240/each. You can see them and read about them here:www.cyclonengines.narod.ru/ I would prefer that the aircraft have the capablility to take off without the use of a catapult or launcher, but that is just a preference, not be a design killer. The plane must be a new design, use of exotic/composite materials are encouraged. I would prefer to deal with someone with the USA. If this post belongs elsewhere, I'll move it. I just thought this was the place to start.

DC F-20 Tigershark-Look Out!
"Revvers Brotherhood" sounds great to me. I also really like the application wording. Can we just send in the surgeons report from our propeller accidents? I have a good one from awhile back.....let's see, 4 stitches to repair the extensor tendon, and 8 stitches to close the wound. No, that was from a number 11 exacto blade, the prop-strike injury wasn't quite so bad - Ha! FlyBoy Dave, I agree that 100mph is fast enough, just threw the 150mph out there. Now even I can get in - thanks! (just have to get the photo of the radar readout). I have no idea how to make the rest of the "Brotherhood" happen - can we have a page or something here on the RCU?? National Day of Combat
A great idea for promoting combat has come from the fertile mind of Jay F. of the Radio Control Combat Association: A "National Day of Combat"!!! The idea is to promote combat by having a day set aside across the country to fly combat - any kind you want. Scores would be kept and sponsors would be donating prizes, etc, but the whole thing would be coordinated across the country. By using the Internet as the great tool that it is, this idea is totally doable! It would bring significant notice to the fastest growing sport in R/C. Right now, two dates are being considered: Sept 20th or Sept 27, 2003. Think about the possibilites and start posting your ides.

No Cuts, No Glory!
Flying organized combat is the best R/C flying I've ever done! It can be as intense or relaxing(yes, I said "relaxing") as any other type of R/C flying. The latest development, "Slow, Survivable Combat"(SSC) is growing rapidly. It embodies everything great about combat and couples it with a few simple rules that allow it to actually be relaxing. The planes fly slowly, are still manueverable, yet survive the occasional mid-air - I can't think of a negative aspect to SSC. I fly a fleet of T-Rex's in Open B, Ki-64's in Scale 2610, and Hell On Rails (H.O.R's) in SSC.

Too much paint
SydClement, I remember your original post on your launcher, recently reviewed it. Do you have more pictures than what you posted? If so, you I'd like to see them. Thanks. What do you think of having one bungee pulling a cradle. The bungee could be staked out in front of the launcher and pulled back to it, attaching to the underside of the cradle. I'm also wondering if a spring with adjustable tension could be used, like the kind that is used to throw clay pigeons. I've also mulled over the idea of a dolly that would ride on a rail. The Whiplash would sit on top of it, and the rail would keep it going straight. You would set it up in the direction of desired take-off and go, allowing the Whiplash to fly off the dolly. Figuring out how long the rail has to be would be somewhat tricky, but it could be made long and then shortened after experience is gained.

Not the painter's fault
Chuck, I guess it sounds like I'm trying to blame the painter. He did what I asked for. Used the type of paint I wanted and it looks like a million bucks. He used to fly R/C, so he knows about planes, he's also restored an award-winning Stearman(full-scale) and is working on a very rare(one-of-a-kind) Waco. I picked out the paint, PPG Global process, and told him to do what he thought was best - I also told him that I hoped he could keep the weight down as much as possible, BUT, that I was interested in a very nice finish. I couldn't be happier with the result, except for the additional weight. So.... I will just have to figure out how to launch this Whiplash and get it up to flying speed - and how to land it with the higher wing loading.

Too much paint
Got my Whiplash back from the paintshop, it is beautiful, - - no, it is just absolutely gorgeous. Sorry don't have a way to post pix. Will try to get some on here soon. The top is Ford Metallic Pearl Torch Red - matches the BSE Jett 50 FIRE anodized Carb, and the bottom is a Bright Metal Flake Silver. No fancy designs, just pure color, top and bottom. However, even though I made it clear to the painter that I needed to keep the weight down, it came back with a whopping 10.7 oz of paint!!!! Oh! No!! Oh !%$#^&&! I completely set-up the plane with all components, drilled every hole required, and balanced it with the battery as far back as I could, all prior to painting. I added 4oz of weight behind the CG to simulate the weight of paint aft of the CG, as well. I was hoping for around 5 to 6 oz of paint, max. Now, I've calculated that the weight of the paint aft of the CG is 9oz. That amount minus the battery(3oz and the 4oz of weight used to simulate the weight of the paint), leaves me with 2oz of weight needed to balance the plane. I'm pretty sure I can get a spinnernut machined to balance the plane. That, and move a bigger battery all the way forward. But that's not all.... I'm thinking that the total weight will be around 5lbs 8oz. So, this is probably the heaviest Whiplash around. I think I'm going to have to build a catapult for it. I'm somewhat concerned about SydClement's method of stretching rubber bands or surgical tubing back to hook onto the trailing edge for launch assist... What if one of the elastics broke on launch? What if they both didn't pull equally on launch?? I'll keep you posted on what it takes to get it right again.

Whiplash is ready...
Are you gonna use the tape that is supplied with the plane or some other material? If you're using something different than what was supplied, would you tell us what it is? I set up my radio gear that I was planning to use on my Whip. I was planning to use: 2 MPX Royal Digi BB for elevons 1 Hitec 225BB for throttle Hitec 555 rec'vr 5 cell, 720mah NiMH rec'vr pack Switch harness I plugged it all in, and had a ton of glitches, batt volt was 7.0 right off a fresh charge. Tried to isolate the problem - it was the 555 rec'vr. Hitec tech said that it could handle the voltage, but it can't. I have 5 of these rec'vrs - all caused all the servos to glitch with the 5 cell pack. I've used these rec'vers for quite some time in my combat planes and never had a problem - but always with a 4 cell batt. pack. I tried the set up with a Futaba 7 channel rec'vr - no glitches. So, since there were no glitches, I was able to actuate the servos - and- I had three of the MPX's(brand new) get jumpy. I tried four servos, and only one was smooth throughout the tx stick motion. I tried these servos one at a time in every channel in the rec'vr. I tried 'em all hooked up - still the same. I tried it with a 4 cell pack - still jumpy. They mostly seemed to lag the tx stick motion. I'd move the stick - then a delay - then the servo would move. All these trials were made without the servos connected to the flight controls - they were just laying on the bench. I also tried it all again three days later without re-charging - batt voltage had dropped to 6.5 - no change in the outcome. The MPX's are being sent back for testing, I don't have a servo tester or programmer. I've already drilled the holes and test mounted all the servos. I'm hoping that I can still use them, but am considering the JR8411's now. Another set-back, but I'll have my Whiplash flying soon enough.

Anyone know what a Wild Thing is??
You are right about the Wild Thing. There is a nearly identical plane called the Crazy Thing, put out by Precision Aero up in Wisconsin. I have one of those, and it really moves. I put a Cyclon PC4 .15 on it with a 7 x 4. The Cyclon turns 25K and that is one the ground, static. You should hear it unload in a dive! I used all HS-81MG servos in mine, standards would be a real tight squeeze, but could be used. Mine weighs 2lbs 2oz with a Norvel .25 Big Mig( I took the Cyclon off to tear it down - wanted to see what it was looking like inside after a year, looks like new.) The plane builds quite easily, and would be a great plane to get as your first real mover. They used to use them for combat, but not anymore - they would just go poof! against the materials that are being used nowadays.
