RE: Doculam
Ive read that for painting the outside of doculam , its best to scuff with a scourer pad or fine sandpaper to give the paint a key. Also for translucent colours it can be dyed with RIT fabric dye in hot water.

" Now defunct, Aero-Flyte was an Australian supplier of aeromodelling kits and accessories. " I'ed be so bold to say the majority of aussie modelers cut there teeth on AeroFlyte kits, my first C/L model was the Aeroflyte Mustang fitted with a Tiapan 1.5cc diesel, and my first R/C model an Aeroflyte Invader 48" (still have the kit plans) ws single ch with OS Pixie , 2 OS motorised actuators on rudder/ throttle(3 position) and an early OS 15 max R/C engine( which I still have). The last Aeroflyte kit I purchased was the 15 Trainer ( Enya .15 R/C)which I still have and is still airworthy. Stew

RE: Mills diesel
For fuel, equal parts of kerosine ( distillate-parrafin), ether and castor oil , ie 33% kerosine,33% ether ,33% castor oil , this is commonly reffered too as "Old English " mix the ether and castor first to dissolve the castor oil then add the kerosine .

RE: A TRIBUTE TO MY SON, CHARLES IV
Well I sat silently through this last year as my youngest son servered his tour in Afganistan, he's in the Australian army combat engineers, it was there job to find and disarm the IED's (roadside bombs), I'm glad and releived to say he returned home safe, but saddly one of his crew did not, the IED he was working on was remote detonated by the cowards that live in ignorance. Although my son came home in one piece , he is emotionaly scared by the horrific loss of his comraid as many others who have served in the war against terroism and oppression. My thoughts are with them all

RE: Balancing your rocket
Vic, Hiyu, Ive used the string method in the past myself for small model rockets - it works. But as he mentioned buying large , scale rockets they maybe a bit large or due to scale detail ,difficult to attach a string ,that i mentioned useing the software. Attached is an Openrocket report on my Binder Aspire which can be printed as a feild reference on launch days to aid in motor selection for the prevailing launch conditions etc , also note if the report is on an own designed rocket the full size fin pattern and fin location guide are included to aid construction. RE: Balancing your rocket
As`a general rule, were the CG is is not overly important- so long as its at least one calibre ahead of the CP (centre of pressure or aerodynamic neutral point), there are other factors as to CG/CP location that affect a rockets overal flyte characteristics, but the one caliber + rule is the main basic requirement. There are rocket design software available that will calculate these for you , Rocksim is an excelant commercial program or Openrocket is a free dounload( http://openrocket.sourceforge.net/ ) . You can imput/design your rockets on these programs and it will give you the CP and proposed CG-(needs confirming after build as amount of glue , density variations of components will vary), also a lot of the comercial kits will have sim files available you can plug ino the software to use to find the CP if the kit instructions dont give it, can also be used to find out the best motor options for your kit and expected altitudes etc. Stewart

RE: where to buy ether?
John, The problem with the JD starting fluid is the dissolved butane used as the propellent, the can needs degassing and then poured into an open jar/can to allow the remaining gas to escape, otherwise inconsistant runs/settings starting difficulties manifest themselves. Butane has a low cetane rateing as opossed to the high cetane of the ether.

RE: where to buy ether?
Actually it was a hand operated roller cutter type can opener I used to cut the base off the can after spraying off the propellant. But the mention of an electric makeing sparks is not nessesarily correct, the one I used to have had an induction motor(no brushes) so no sparks and the switch was a sealed microswitch. Stewart

RE: Sharma 3.5 cc throttle
If you look on there website " http://www.sharmamodelaero.com/engine.htm ", you will see they make both a C/L and R/C versions , which use a different crankcase casting. The C/L version would probably be difficult to put a carby on due to the vertical venturi being close in to the cylinder muff, recheck which version your friend has for sale. Stewart

RE: newbie question McCoy 0.049
William, The McCoy 049 diesels have a contrapiston that uses an O'ring to seal it, it also has a flange at the top to prevent it being screwed down to far and contacting the piston. So it must only be removed out the top!

What about a TD050 carby :- http://www.exmodelengines.com/product.php?productid=17607&cat=252&page=1, if they can provide for an .8cc @ 20,000rpm it should be about right for a 1.2cc @ 6-10,000rpm.

RE: The Great Glow Plug Run Off!
Andrew, From my correspondence with Merlin, the Nelson style plugs are the same on the thread/taper as the original but has the same hex/top construction as a 1/4-32 plug so a regular glowdriver will fit them, I personally havent purchased there nelson plugs as of yet. Ive only got the 1 VA mk2 and still useing up the spare nelson plugs I bought from Larry.

RE: Cox 049 RPM ???
trike_flyer , most Cox engine parts can be found here :- http://coxengines.ca/ , only way to fix a crankshaft leak is a new crankcase and crankshaft , if you plan on useing a cox motor a bit , I'ed recommend buying an anodised C/case, also if your building up a motor for high rpm's use the killer crankshaft as its stronger and better balanced. re your crankcase leak , are you useing the correct crankcase gasket ? , these are available in several different varrieties acording to the backplate type and available from the above webstore.

RE: Hybrid motors?
While it isnt essential for a full length motor tube, it is desireable with forward vented hybreds- Why? to ensure the vent tube isnt dislodged by the chute etc on acceleration, causeing N2O to be vented into the bodytube around the recovery gear as ejection gases/flame could cause undesirable results. Im currently looking at the 54mm Skyripper hybred set for myself and will use full length motor tubes in my designs for the above reasons- may not be needed , but better safe than sorry. Stewart

RE: Last time shopping at Hobby Lobby
I dont know what the laws are in your country , but here if you buy and pay for something and they don't honour the sale , its considered fraud , and doest go down well with the constabulary. If you,ve allready accepted a refund well theres not much can be done. But if no refund then push the point!!!
