RE: GRYPHON - build thread (sports/trainer 2m composite jet)
Mark, Mike, and all, We had a VERY successful maiden day today. Three perfect flights, three perfect landings. She took 30oz. lead in the nose to balance (initially)!!............but buy the end of the third flight I had removed 12 of those, and i'm not done! Next wknd., we will continue removing lead until we reach the sweet spot. Test flight C/G was set at 185, center of the window with the small CAT full and the main tank empty, and gear down. She is safe at 185 but took an uncomfortable amount of down elv. in the inverted, and was tucking in in the turns. I did'nt get a chance at the field to re-measure where we're at currently, but 12oz lighter made her much better all around. As the flights continue, I'll keep reporting the progress, but she has GREAT potintial, and Mike Lin and I are thrilled with what we have so far............

Marc, I will go weigh the wings right now and edit this post. They are completely done and flight ready so I don't want to take them back apart, but if I give you a total weight, you'll be very close. Ok, my wings weigh exactly 3 lbs each. Hope this helps.

RE: GRYPHON - build thread (sports/trainer 2m composite jet)
Marc, I just did a mock setup, to get an idea where I was C/G wise, and I can not get even close[:o] Mind you, I have the stock pipe and stock by-pass. Even with NOTHING on the tray, and everything piled on top of the nose retract, and three batts in the extreme nose, I am 2 (two) inches aft of 200mm[X(] Not sure what to do other than to start throwing lead in there, so i'm kinda sitting back to see where yours comes out with your current layout..... PS, does anyone know if the Jets Munt fuelpump can be mounted verticle, or does it need to be horizontal like the others??.

170-200mm from leading edge at root..gear down, UAT full... PS, I have uploaded pictures of where I was at relitive to my posts, a few posts back. So now I can start uploading current pictures as I continue to post my progress. I must say, it's been a fun build so far with really no drama.

RE: GRYPHON - build thread (sports/trainer 2m composite jet)
Hi Steve, The retracts apeer to be from eurokit modeling, made specificly for this plane according to the plan sheet that came with them. their a brand i'v not had the pleasure of trying out before so this should be a fun deal. I'll start to upload pics as soon as I can, i'll edit the first batch into the last post that described where i'm at so far, and then try to add pics as I go, but this build is on a tight time frame, so I may run behind on the pics, but I'v taken a ton of them so far for our tech tips page on our web site, I'll get some of them in this thread asap. Marc, My kit came with only enough horns for one on each surface, but fortunitely I'v been building for Mike for a few years now and have a good stock on bits like that, so I mixed in some FB (Fei Bao) ones I had in stock and used them. I got the bypass cut and fit into the plane and the pipe installed last night, nothing today as we had an informal jettogether at a local dry lake, but I'll hit it hard tomarrow..

RE: GRYPHON - build thread (sports/trainer 2m composite jet)
Thanks Marc, The one i'm building will have one of the just released Jets Munt VT-80s, I just received the turbine and the kit retracts yesterday. This was perfect timing on Mikes part as I had gone as far as I could without those two items... We are sticking with the stock pipe and by-pass, This was not my choice, but I was overuled[:D] The rundown on ours so far is as follows= All servos and control linkages are installed, (except the steering cables since I did'nt have the gear), All hinging done, Stabs mounted, and the three tail servo leads are run to the front and heat sheilded, fuel tank is finished and installed. And during this process is where I ran into the one and only problem so far!.. The three parts that make up the air/fuel tanks supports were "dyecrushed" to the point of non usable, so they became templates and I made new ones from scratch. On our control horns, I elected to go double and run 3mm ballinks between threaded into h-9 ty 4/40 prolinks with FB clevis's at the servos. Thats how far i'm at at this point, I'm just starting to set up the pipe and by-pass tonight, and should have her on her wheels monday or tuesday..

Hi Marc S, Do you mind if other Gryphon builders add in their builds with posting and photos?.... I too am putting one together, but will only start adding to your thread if your cool with it. If you just want to keep it your own, thats cool too, up to you budd. By the way, yours is coming along great so far. Mine is at roughly the same stage as yours, mabee a bit further along, but not much.. GREAT kit so far!!

HUGE SUCCESS!! After what seemed like forever in a series of range tests, including replacing a failed remote RX., and with final range test numbers in the single digits, she was topped up with fuel and she was off. WOW, what a smooth plane. She needed NO trim, none. She will need some tweeking here and there to be competitive in her new career as an IMAC plane, WOW, what a great base plane to start with. Did'nt get pics or footage today as I did'nt want to break focas on the task at hand. Settled on just two hops today, will take her up again on Thursday, for mor tweeking, and will shoot some field snaps then. [:D][:D][:D][:D][sm=thumbs_up.gif]

RE: Planes Plus 2.6M X-treme Composite Edge 540T?
Ok, Here's some snaps of what I had to start with. Pic 1 is the original fuel tank mount, pretty beat up. Pic 2 after mount removal and cleaned up. Pic 3 is the old Smart-Fly mount?, I question marked that because nothing was mounted on that tray when i received the plane, but my comp 12 Smart-Fly fit there perfectly. I actually considered leaving it there and using it but it was broken in several spots and pretty ratty looking. Pic 4 is where the Rudder servo was. Pic 5 is where someone had removed a switch and led and covered this hole with a sticker. Last pic is after all stickers removed except for naked chic and Red Bull on wheel pants.

Damon, YEP!!! Thats her, funny, the one sticker I left on the plane is the naked chick on the bottom!.. I left her on the plane for two reasons, 1, she does NOT represent or advritise for anyone or anything and 2, DUH, SHE'S NAKED[:D] I also left the vurtual dash/pilot, and you or someone rlse had made helmethead's head turn via a servo, I left this in also (for the time being) Keeping in mind that her new mission will strickly be IMAC, I have set her up with a forward C/G. If it turns out tail heavy the first few hops, working h/h and vurtual dash will be the first things swapped for just the dash and a foam h/h. Not alot else I could change, as my rebuild has already moved everything forward. I'll upload some snaps to show her current setup..

Rick75 COOL colors, I like it. Mine started out as the one with red and white checkers, but somewhere along the way, one of the previous owners airbrushed light blue stripes into all the white and red checkers[X(][&o] So today I started colorsanding all that off to restore the original red/white checkers!! I hope it turns out good...

RE: Planes Plus 2.6M X-treme Composite Edge 540T?
Hi Damon, It is the M&M Zivko one. Or was, the first thing I did when I got it home was take off ALL the stickers, Zivko M&Ms DA......everything! I just never cared for stickers, especially if no one is paying me for the advertising. Still waiting on the new switches to arive. You probably would'nt recognise it anymore, I made SO many changes to it from the way I received it from the last owner... I gutted it and completely rebuilt it like if it were a new kit. Threw out almost all of the electronics, batteries were toast, most of the solder joints were cold soldered and failed as soon as I tugged on them. ALL the servos were sent in to be gone through, and the Spectrum RX that was in it failed to work so it got trashed too, and replaced with a new 1221 on a Smartfly comp12 + a super reg. I could go on and on...... But the bottom line is, every single part has been checked serviced repaired or replaced, and i'm confident now that it will be a safe and fun plane.....

RE: Planes Plus 2.6M X-treme Composite Edge 540T?
WOW, WHAT A LONG THREAD[X(] OK, time to dust off this old thread. Last summer I made a trade and ended up with what i beleive is/was Damons (I buy houses) Edge. It looked great when i did the deal, but after getting it home and looking deeper into it, I made some shocking discoveries. It had been through the ringer (battle tested)!... I was so disapointed with the deal and the last owner (not Damon) I put it in the corner of the house and did'nt look at it for 7 months. I even tried a couple times to unload it, but no takers, so I finally decided to restore it. I started working on it 6 wks. ago, and it's done now except for two new Fromeco Badger switches i'm waiting for from Fromeco. Does anyone still have one of these planes?, and if so, how are they holding up?.... I'm looking forward to flying mine, and hope it flys good enough for IMAC Basic.

When parts are put into humans (metal, plastic etc.) they all have serial numbers for tracing. It seems to me the model manf. could do the same thing on the pins and shafts and such. this would also block the problem that K-Sonn brought up

When i used to use Spring-Air's back in the day, After the last flight, I would put the plane on stand, retract the gear, zip-tie the strut to the cyl/frame assy., and pack it in the van. Then cut the zip-tie's once home, then repeat the process to go back to the field.

Ron, Thats the same setup i am thinking about using! I saw the DLE-20 run in a 300 Extra, Sunday, and the engine ran very well. The muffler is very compact and the rear carb will be easy to mod into the Cub, so i personally can't see a reason not to try it. Mine will also be on floats...
