RE: 1/6 Scale F4U Corsair Group Build
I'll still do this project. I'm not sure if it will be this winter or next, but the stack of balsa is still on the shelf, and the drawings are still on the wall.

Really nice. You need to scale down the raindrops though.

RE: 1/8 scale TopFlite Corsair Mods
Mine has been in primer waiting for panel lines and details for 2 years. I imagine that it will wait another year based on my boat project list.

Cool. I'd love to see that Spitty after all of the hoops we had to jump through to get it across the pond.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
That was an obnoxious post. Sorry about that. Gear doors were one of the most challenging parts of the build, and I didn't love my first effort.

RE: You Can Win First Place at a Warbird Rally With An ARF? Really?
Who gives a rip about contests? Maybe I am an anomaly, but when I set out to build a thing, I don't really care about public approval. So in retrospect, I go back to my original question. Who really gives a rip about contests? The participant, the builder, the kit designer?

Nice to see everyone still pushing forward on their projects. I'll be back, but probably not until at least next winter. The full scale wooden boat project continues to keep me very busy. Tom

It would also be nice to get the sail winch servo that I contributed to the cause back. We are doing a lot of boating and I have a model project in mind where that will come in handy. Chad, I sent it to you initially, so I trust that you can track it down and get it returned. Tom

Hey Peter, Just dropped by to see what the balsa butcherers are up to. I'm still butchering wood, but it's the 1939 boat variety. Maybe I'll get back to balsa later this year. I miss chatting with you. Tom

RE: 1/6 Scale F4U Corsair Group Build
I do keep an eye on this project, and I'll probably pick it up again in the Fall if the wooden boat doesn't surprise me in some way. I had the need today to sort through my substantial store of balsa and ply and I was reminded of how much I miss working on this. Chad, please send my Aune gear back. I'm happy to send them back to you when you get a chance to work on this again. Tom

RE: An Apology to Kelvin at Keleo Creations
What a strange coincidence. I only look at these forums every 3-4 months now, but I dropped by today and this thread was on the front page. My RC hobby is has been on hold for a couple of years since I unexpectedly "inherited" a 1939 wooden boat. All of my shop time and money has been devoted to that project. http://www.woodenboat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=110427 Glad to see that everyone here is still keeping the faith. Tom
ORIGINAL: Remklep Thanks for the tip about the JB quickweld, seems I have another reason to bring my large suitcase on the next tour to Los Angeles in July :-)
JB Quik was a very nice add to my bag of tricks. I use it almost exclusively now for things where I previously used JB Weld.

RE: 1/6 Scale F4U Corsair Group Build
Just catching up on everyone's progress. For some reason, my subscriptions to this thread seem to have stopped working. I'm a little red-in-the-face having seen that even after spending a couple of weekends studying a measuring different drawings and even building 3 prototypes, that I still got the tailwheel conclusively wrong. I knew there was a reason that I didn't go to engineering school. :) Kudos to everyone that stayed on the job and tracked down the actual dimensions. I guess I'll be building my 4th version sometime this Fall. Danny, you should get some JB Quik to use on parts like this. Has pretty much the same properties as JB Weld and dries in a few minutes. RE: 1/6 Scale F4U Corsair Group Build
ORIGINAL: Remklep Gents, When I was in LA last week, I visited Scott (Saramos) and showed him the tailgear I build. He then showed me his tailgear and we both noticed that Scott's was smaller than mine. When we layed our tailgears on the tailgear drawings, mine matched exactly, whereas Scott's was too small. Scott thought this strange as he said he based the size on drawings and photos he had. I have been comparing the tailgear drawing against a blueprint from my collection, I attached the original blueprint and a cutout with the tailgear drawing layed on it below. I then measured a know distance from Chad's fuselage plans (the height of the fuse where the vertical tail begins) and calculated the factor for the drawing and found that part B should be 99.758mm or 3.927" long. On the tailgear drawing however, part B is 113.5mm or 4.469" long. Based on this I must come to the conclusion that the tailgear drawings are closer to 1 : 5.27 scale and therefore too big. What do you guys think? Danny
My analysis spans maybe pages 3-5 of the thread and is summarized here - http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=7352196

Nice touches on the tailwheel, Danny. After doing so much work on this bit, it's great to see some new ideas and innovations. I like the milled shock base a lot. Tom

RE: 1/6 Scale F4U Corsair Group Build
Hi all, One of the guys reached out to see where I've been, so I thought I'd drop in and say hello. I've been keeping an eye on the project. I have been doing a lot of building - just not on RC Airplanes. You can see our continuing restoration of our 1939 motor yacht [link=http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=55593&id=564988878&l=c3c12ea14a]here[/link]. By the time we re-launch in early May, it will be time for golf, cycling, boating and flying seasons. With any luck, I'll pick this project up again in the Fall. Can't see it happening this summer. I do still watch weekly, though. Keep up the good work. Tom

RE: 1/8 scale TopFlite Corsair Mods
I've tried to talk him into doing pilots, but the return on investment just isn't there. It takes many hours to do a really great job, and the RC hobby is notoriously cheap. Can't sell them for more than $100 or so. The market just doesn't make sense. Has to be a labor of love. Tom

RE: 1/8 scale TopFlite Corsair Mods
I haven't touched my Corsair projects in the last couple of months since I've been working on a full-scale restoration of a different type. In September, we unexpectedly inherited a 1939 Richardson cabin cruiser and have been working at the boatyard every weekend since. [link=http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=40659&l=3eea6&id=564988878]Here are some photos[/link] for those that may enjoy old wooden boats. I did get a nice surprise under the Christmas tree when my father-in-law gave me the painted pilot for this project. He did a lot of nice detailing including transforming the Vailly Aviation WWII USAAF pilot to USMC gear. Note the khaki collared shirt, in particular. Some of the detail on the flashlight and the parachute straps came out really nice as well. The Mae West came out too glossy. That's my only negative. I'm getting antsy to get back to my RC projects.
