SD-10G parts identification
Arrrgh! My neckstrap broke and my SD-10G hit the ground, breaking one of the long-handle 3-position switches and the antenna sheath. While I can figure out the part number for the switch, the antenna part(s) have me baffled. It would be nice to have an exploded view with proper part numbers! I've searched the Web to no avail. Does anyone know the part numbers for the sheath and the black and silver mounting rings for it? Also, just how do these parts come apart? Thanks in advance for any and all help! Jim

RE: Magnum engines?
Magnums are a bit of a "cr*p shoot". I currently have two .61s (4/s) that are fine - not real powerful, but reliable. I am the engine repair guy for the SRQ club and have overhauled over a dozen Magnum 4-strokes. Some were good (powerful and reliable) and some were dogs - one even had a hole mis-drilled into the chamber above the inlet valve in the head! Some have good compression, some not. For the low price, I would take the chance, though. My 2c, JIm

Need some advice from the Fox experts. I have a .25 BB Schnuerle that appears to have a slightly bent (don't ask) crankshaft stud. An email to Fox on how to remove it got no answer so, please help! Are the threads right handed? (I would guess so). Is some heat in order? Any help would be appreciated. Jim

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hi All, I just picked up a Saito FA45 [marked as series "G"] intending to use it - maybe in an oldtimer. Well, I was surprised to see that it appears to have never been run or even mounted. There is absolutely no gum or soot anywhere on the valves or at the exhaust port. The plug hole appears to never have had a plug in it also. There is some very slight rust on the prop washer, nut and shaft and on the inside of some of the bolts' sockets. I like to run my engines, especially all my Saitos. I thought that maybe a "collector" might be interested in this one, considering the condition? There is no box or paperwork or tools. Let me know (PM best) if anyone wants it for display before I "test" it! Thanks, Jim

Make sure the pressure nipple in the muffler is not blocked. If it is, the engine is trying to draw a vacuum on the tank and will only run a few seconds. Good luck! Jim

RE: super sportster 90-120
I had a "rebuilt" SS 90-120 back about 12 years ago. The original had a Maloney 100 in it (arrrgh). I remade the cheeks and had an ASP .91 2/s (OK) and then an old Saito 1.20 4/s (much better) in it. I don't know what it weighed. I currently have one that I built in 2003, sold in 2004 and bought back from the same guy in 2011. It has a Thunder Tiger 1.20 2/s and weighs exactly 10 lbs. dry. I think 12 or 13 lbs. seems a bit heavy, as that would be approaching 2 lb/ sq. ft. I still have the instructions and will check tomorrow on what is stated as the anticipated weight. No matter what, you will love this plane! Hah! I checked the original instruction manual and NO weight! The weight psoted above is for tail-dragger and no wheel pants. Regards, Jim

RE: OS 40FP with DDD
I have a dieselized FP 40 (RJL head) in an Escapade (pictures in Escapade thread - about 3 or 4 weeks ago). After some experimenting, I found that it liked a TF wood 11-8 (old pattern prop) best. Mid 9's if I remember right. Pulled the 5 lb. plane around just fine. A 13-5 should not be too much prop for a REAL diesel. I had an Irvine 40 that liked a 12-8, but those are really beefy. I know I'll be careful with the FP from now on! Jim

RE: *** CLUB SUPER TIGRE ***
Hi, Might I join? I have a S3000, S2500, (3) G23s, G90 (to be dieselized), G75, GS45 and (2) GS40s (thinking of a twin). One of the G23s is in an Ultrasport 1000 that is 20+ years old and is the best flying plane ever! I guess I have been lucky - the only time I ever had a dead stick with any of my Tigres is when the glow plug blew (completely) out! I had some others I should have kept: a rear exhaust X.61, a baffle-piston .51 and a 1971 G20/23. Oh, well. I do need some help from you folks. I have a "basket case" S40K (ringed, Italian) that DOES NOT have the dished-in head. It has a head like the current GS 40. Does anyone have the original parts listing so that I can figure out what GS40 parts might fit - or a list of what they know would work? I know from Frank Bowman that the rings are identical, which makes me think the pistons would be also. I have some extra GS40 cranks and sleeves, but it would be nice to know without tearing down an engine and measuring everything. Tower's "parts usage" does not reflect the older models that the parts might fit. Thanks in advance! Jim

RE: Moki 210 Performance
I have a Moki 2.10 in a Midwest Extra 300S at about 17 lbs. I use both MA and Zinger 20x8 wood and they both turn in the high 7's on 5%. Using a Bisson Pitts-type muffler with NO tubes plugged and a mixture of 3/32 and larger tubing. Absolutely unlimited vertical at about 3/4 throttle. A 2.10 in a 13 lb. plane - wow! Regards, Jim

RE: a little big for 1/2A but 15 size
Just a word about this plane - John Hoover designed and kitted this some years ago up in the cold part of the country (WI or MI?), but it is not being produced any more. I built one in 2004 and flew it for 6 years with an OS .10FP, which is plenty of power. It is a BLAST to fly! I have passed it on to a Canadian friend and his buddies up North are making them from the original plans. John Hoover's designs are well thought out and fly very well. I have built the Hyper Bee, his Reflex 25 (tailless) and have a 'Lil Bubba yet to build. It is sorta' a 1/2A version of the Hyper Bee. Regards, Jim

RE: Great Planes Escapade .40 ARF
hsukaria, I have some Davis Diesel that I bought from the local hobby store before he closed. The FP will turn an 11-6 in the mid 10K range, but then it uses more fuel. I flew 3 flights on a six ounce tank on Thursday. I think I will run the tube down by the gear pant, but I have to bend the brass tube more, or maybe cut it and join it with some flex in order to make the angle work. I also have a PAW .29 plain bearing NIB that is destined for an old-timer sometime soon. Also have a DD head for a ST .90. I am breaking the ST in on glow and then have to find a prop big enough for when it is a diesel! One of the other "clowns" made his Stinger into a "G-STRING". People are clever! I have some others I might share soon in a separate thread - I bet we could get lots of funny stuff. Jim

RE: Great Planes Escapade .40 ARF
I guess I'm the club clown when it comes to decals and names for planes. The prop is an APC 11-8. It helps with the noseweight vs. a wood prop. I think I'll go to an APC 11-7 to get the RPMs up a bit. The Escapade is a "relaxed" flier with the diesel FP40. Learning to operate a diesel has been a bit of a challenge, but I like different stuff. It has enough power for most standard maneuvers, no 3D and only limited vertical, but I like to take it easy once in a while. After I get tired of cleaning up the goo, I'll replace the diesel with my GMS .47 (hee-hee). Jim

RE: Great Planes Escapade .40 ARF
Hi all, I've read this ENTIRE thread (whew!). Yesterday was the first flights for my Escapade in a cool (for Florida), stiff crosswind. She flies just beautifully. Here's some background: Weight: 5-0 Balance: 71mm Modifications: springs on glued canopy tubes, battery under tank floor at front, ball links on R and E, 30 min. epoxy with West colloidal silica at all forward joints, finishing resin at firewall and tank area, NO epoxy on the tail or joining the wings Radio: Airtronics 10 SDG. 2.4 gHz. Power: OS 40 FP with RJL diesel head, APC 11-8, Higley heavy hub (no spinner). Exhaust tube keeps the gook off at least the front of the plane I've been flying for 55 years and into R/C for the last 45. I specifically bought the Escapade for the little diesel, as the Tiger 2 it was on was too heavy. Now I think I may also use the Escapade to get some air time on a pair of Magnum .61 4/s that will eventually power a Wing Mfg. P-38. Here's some pictures - sorry but I messed up some of the decals! Jim

RE: Venus 40 canopy
Wayne, Thanks for the really good info! Sorry about your Venus. I've had mine since 2003 and it is my "Old Faithful". It is absolutely the best flying plane I've ever had - and I've had over 120! I have a Saito .72 in it and it is a wonderful combination. The plane has almost no coupling, so knife edge is real easy to do. I'm not a 3D guy, but I let one of the guys at our club really wring it out - wow! Thanks again. Now I know I'll be able to get her back in the air without the packing tape all over the fuselage. Jim

RE: Venus 40 canopy
Wayne - Thanks for the info! I have the measurements and I'll check the guy at the field with the UCD tomorrow. I'll measure his. This would be the easiest "fix". Tande - Good idea. I'll call them. The canopies have been "late April" until just recently when they were marked "discontinued". Can't hurt to call and beg/sob/whatever. Opjose - On the way to the field, I got cut off by a fellow on a bicycle, slammed on the brakes and the roll-around toolbox fell over on the Venus. The canopy was very brittle (old) and it "exploded". Not enough pieces to put back together, even if I had kept all of them. Your method is great and I'll be using it on my Ultrasport 1000 canopy which is is sorry shape - but I do have all the necessary pieces. Thanks for the great idea! I'll check the plastics website now, just in case they make one.

Bob, LS needle is just about flush with outside of throttle arm - maybe 1/8 turn recessed. HS needle is open about 1-3/4 turns. Tuesday will tell if the (supposed) leak at the intake tube was the culprit. I'm also going to try what Hobbsy suggested, which is essentially richening up the low end, tuning the top end and sneaking up on the low end. I'll report back Tuesday night. Thanks, Jim
