RE: Smoke oil?
I use Shell. You can get it at a Shell distributor and save a lot of money if you buy it in a 55-gal drum which is probably the only quantity they sell.

RE: Lithium Ion batteries
EddieC Your quote: "That's incorrect...." Halon 1301 is ineffective in suppressing a lithium battery fire." I don't think I was misrepresenting anything... You simply quoted the results from Metal Lithium to declare my statement as "incorrect". Neither you nor David noted the distinction between the tests on Metal versus Ion Lithium batteries that was contained in same test you were both quoting from to make the statement that Halon was ineffective.

RE: Lithium Ion batteries
EddieC, Now you agree! You used the results of a test on Lithium Metal batteries to say Halon was not effective on the fire and declare my post wrong. The use of Halon on both tests and the results were with respect to FIRE..not the chemical reaction. Halon works on the FIRE from Ion...not Metal which is what I quoted. RE: Lithium Ion batteries
Not so fast Eddie C. You are confusing two different things...The report you are referencing tested BOTH Lithium Metal (Primary Batteries that are non-rechargable) and Lithium-Ion batteries (Secondary Batteries that are rechargeable). Your quote is from the results of the Lithium Metal battery fire test. If you had read to the bottom of the report you would have found that the test results on rechargable Lithium-ion batteries were completely different. Fires from Lithium-ion batteries that we use in our models can be extinguished with Halon except as I indicated when they are subject to 'thermal runaway' conditions where the temp of the fire has to be reduced to suppress the fire. http://www.avweb.com/avwebflash/news/FAA_lithium_battery_safety_alert_fire_cargo_UPS_crash_203408-1.html "The FAA Friday released a Safety Alert to address "risks in transporting lithium batteries in cargo by aircraft," noting that UPS Flight 006, a 747 that crashed on Sept. 3, was carrying large quantities of lithium batteries. Fire was reported on the UPS flight but the FAA notes that a cause of the crash has not yet been determined. The crash destroyed the aircraft and killed the crew. The FAA has found that lithium metal batteries are not only "highly flammable and capable of ignition" but also possess destructive explosive potential. The agency says Halon 1301, the fire suppression agent found in Class C cargo holds, "is ineffective in controlling a lithium metal cell fire" and lithium metal battery explosions can lead to "rapid fire spread" in cargo compartments. Lithium-ion batteries are somewhat different. They can exhibit the same thermal runaway as lithium metal batteries, but the FAA says Halon 1301 is capable of suppressing lithium-ion battery fires."

RE: Lithium Ion batteries
David, Your quoted test results on the effectiveness of suppressing Lithium fires left me puzzled since I had believed Halon (or its substitute) to be effective and recommended by the FAA. I read a few test findings done by the FAA, etc. and they stated that Halon was effective. However, at some level (I couldn't find any reference to what constituted that level), Lithium fires do produce thermal runaway and require the temp of the fire to be reduced (water) in order for it to be extinguished effectively. I didn't want my fellow RC modelers to be pouring water on their planes because they thought their CO2 or Halon substitute wasn't going to work on a 2-cell Lithium battery. I can't attest to its effectiveness from first-hand knowledge but I think I will reach for the CO2 or Halon substitute before I go for the water hose.[:)] George

RE: Lithium Ion batteries
ORIGINAL: David Gladwin You may be surprised to know that four airliners and crews have been lost as a result of lithium fires so it is a serious issue. regards, David.
David, Good information but I think it has to be put into proper context. Since you mentioned "airliners and crews", I suspect that these losses were cargo flights carrying batteries that were probably improperly handled or damaged in loading (i.e. fork lift). No less a loss for the crews, but there have probably been other crew and cargo flights lost because of nature of the material being transported or improperly handled. There are reported model losses due to Lipo fires but as a percentage of model accidents, I suspect that Lipo fires is pretty far down the list as a percentage of all losses. Even the use of an uncharged battery has probably caused more model crashes. And I have read the traggic loss of homes, etc. due to Lipo fires but probably far fewer than fires caused by any number of other reasons that could have been prevented (clothes dryer lint trap fires for example). It is good to try and reduce the risk of any accident but that has to be weighed against the benefit and even personal preference after reasonable analysis of the data. Your info is good and useful. I just hope that accidents associated with minimal risks, don't result in laws that prohibit their use. Maybe laws limiting or controlling Lipo transport by cargo flights is a good thing because of the magnitude of the potential loss but I hope it doesn't filter down to model airplanes. George

RE: Vogelsang Aero...above and beyond
+1 I have been working with Gotz on the purchase of a glider. It is difficult being a rep for a company outside of the US. It requires a lot of exchanges of info and translations, etc. to spec and buy a model which is not your typical "off-the-shelf" type model with just two color scheme options. I agree, he has always gotten back to me on all my emails and put forth a lot of effort on behalf of the companies he represents and his customers. George

RE: Promo of Jet Activities
Quote: "Could be the case, pick up the phone." John, I have. But not-with-standing your comment, the intent of my post was to ask those that run the jet events and our local JP and AMA district reps in the U.S. if they are helping by sending photos and articles to AMA of jet events and charity events we support. Maybe they do. I think the 'stigma' that jet flyers have in the RC community and local clubs could be improved if we got some more coverage. I think the suggestion that AMA publish an article or two that shows the less expensive side of jet flying is a good one. Maybe too much attention is given to the "biggest, best and most expensive". Promo of Jet Activities
I was searching my most recent issue of Model Aviation from the AMA for something I might find related to our part of RC flying and, as is most often the case, found nothing except for one pic of a jet displayed at the Beechcraft Heritage Museum and Rich Hanson's discouraging report on the FAA's NPRM. So I was just wondering whether this is just an AMA decision to not spend much ink on turbine jets, which is admittedly a small segment of RC, or whether we are not doing enough to send in articles and photos to AMA about our jet meets, charity events, etc. Not only would it help promote turbine flying, but it might reinforce the RC community's perception of turbines being a small but 'legitimate' part of the RC community It would be interesting to hear from the promoters of the jet meets, their sponsors, JP and AMA district reps, etc. whether we are doing enough. RE: LiFe or Lipo with regulator??
I know you are kidding because you you would need two extension cords for redundancy and another Honda. What is everyone using for redundancy in their Tx batteries?.[:)] George
ORIGINAL: tomfiorentino Actually I totally solved my battery issues. I switched to extension chords from Walmart. I get the really long ones when the go on sale. Only draw back is you have to count your rolls to keep them equal. Ten rolls to the right and then you pretty much need ten rolls to the left. Otherwise the knots get tough to manage. What's the best portable generator to get...Honda? [:D][:D][:D] Tom
RE: Shuttle solid booster ride up and back
ORIGINAL: Woketman The shear effort and engineering horsepower that went into the entire Space Shuttle Program still boggles my mind to this day. The capability that our great nation simply threw away is astounding, and quite sad. We have truly given up human spaceflight for a long time, perhaps forever. I am so very priviledged to have been a part of the Shuttle Program. I miss it so very much, but have wonderful memories of being a part of such an endeavor.
That is the BIG loss....an entire generation of scientists and engineers and their collective "history" that can't be replaced except at a hugh price in terms of cost and time. When an entire program (not the same as a single defense weapon like the B2, etc) is discontinued, those scientists and engineers go on to other employers or retire. And the depth of technical ability in so many disciplines that comprised NASA, is lost. I often felt that it was such a unique organization of so many disciplines, it could have become the R&D center of the U.S. in solving a lot of other problems....if they could keep the politics, ideologies, graft and corruption of it. I better get another cup of coffee and wake-up.[8|] George

You might try Sawyer Petroleum (Shell Distributor). They have outlets in several LA area locations. I got pricing there on pails and 55 gal drums of Kero. If you get a few guys together that use smoke oil, they also sell it in 55 gal drums a LOT cheeper than you will pay one gallon at a time.

Interesting article in the WSJ. This is the second I've seen in the last week. A sign of things to come. RE: Turbine jet ARF with longest fuel burn?
ORIGINAL: misterneutral It is across class g airspace. I'm no lawyer but isnt uncontrolled airspace and long distance ok if you stay below the shelf and use your ham license?
Whether the airspace is controlled or not is not relevant to what you are trying to do. It only distinguishes the airspace where air traffic control is, or is not, available for piloted vehicles. I am not an attorney either, but if your actions result in the accident of a piloted plane legally operating in uncontrolled (or controlled airspace for that matter), I think you can plan on a giant civil lawsuit not to mention a hugh problem for our hobby. What sort of RC planes are you flying now? Your last RCU post was in 2009 regarding a P-51.

ProLink Hubs - Wheels
I have had two occasions where I have had a tire come off the wheel hub on take-off. Once on an Elan and another on a UF. Both tires were the original ones that came with the ProLink gear...I had never split the hub. Neither had been damaged or worn excessively. Both came off during a straight run during TO on asphalt. During routine maintenance, I never noticed any indication that they were oversized, out-of-round or had any "play" on the hub. Anyone experienced this? Got any suggested solutions like an adhesive between the hub and tire? Thanks, George
