RE: Is there such a thing as 4:1 gearboxes?
Ah my friend rears his ugly head again. Please look up the words "defamation" and "litagation". Ebay uses title based key boards on auction based listings, this is why every auction or fixed price listing has the words Heng Long and RC Tank in the listings. That is pretty much common sense to anyone who has used eBay. HQ does indeed refer to High Quality, this is common practice among many vendors including RCtank.de, myself and probably others. It denotes that the TaiGen parts are generally better detailed than other parts, it also helps me to differentiate between similar products between Mato and TaiGen for example. In the listings you mention they finish 1:16 RC Tank HQ. You will notice the 1:16 RC Tank is used on all my listings, if you are feeling particularly bright you might even notice it on my competitors listings as well. Lastly you sent me an insulting email, then insult and slander my business on this forum, trolling a topic that has nothing to do with your perceived insult while advertising your own website. There is no reference anywhere on my listings to your website, no affliation is implied and to be honest why would I want to affliate myself with someone like yourself who spends their time sending people abusive emails, insulting them on hobby forums etc etc. "Sunk to new lows" really so what were the old lows exactly? Perry there is no shady business practices involved I don't need to nor have I ever participated in such practices. Nor have I slandered another competitor or manufacturer. In answer to your question I believe both the TaiGen boxes and the Mato items sit between the 3:1 and and 4:1 ratio, the Mato boxes in particular sit closer to 4:1.

RE: Need help with Russian S-51 need input guys ;)
I believe the S-51 was never used in battle. It's gun was however used, google 203mm B-4 Howitzer. You can find some good pics of the gun itself on one of my favourite reference sites: http://www.primeportal.net/artillery/yuri_pasholok/203mm_b-4_howitzer_mod.1931/ I have one in my WoT garage should you need any stills for custom work.

RE: Hen long, asiatam and taigen
If everything were to suddenly collapse tomorrow, somebody else would step in and take up the job. Overall 1:16th is a small market but it is a market none-the-less. There are a few companies coming up, some of them have moulds of Heng Long and therefore the production capacity to make them. I know of a few companies planning to release tanks in the future. The main issue is, in the West we really cannot produce anything easily or cheap enough to make it worthwhile and dealing with the actual plants in foreign countries, the local customs and business practices is a major pain. It may be an idea to test the Western governmets rhetoric about funding and supporting new business opportunities and job creation by applying for funding and opening a factory here. Although the banks are still not lending.

RE: Tank Museum message
Hi Dan, they are the almost ready to run variety no electronics package but all gearboxes, metal barrel etc. I waited a long time to try and get an SLU for them but they never appeared. They are good kits, I'll probably end up keeping them for myself to be honest. Although I can get a very good shipping price to US and Canada for them *cough*. [;)] I think they would sell too, just not in high enough numbers to make the development worth it. If you had a smaller company make them the price would higher at retail but the problem could be the project will take much, much longer to get off the ground and risks cost over runs or even fizzling out for a lack of interest. There are possibilities, however, I am looking into purchasing a 3D printer to play with, this has the potential to allow me to prototype parts myself and perhaps in the future rather than releasing complete tanks we might be able to release parts kits such as wheels, track links etc for scratch builders.

RE: Tank Museum message
A British WWII tank or more Soviet WWII armor would sell, but no one is listening to the market place. Instead they blindly plow along giving us things no one needs or wants, and claim dwidling sales and lack of interst as the reason. A T-34, IS2, Comet, Cromwell, Valentine, Hellcat, Hetzer etc would outsell another KT release. Nope, no one listens and they just plow along until the sales number justify them abandoning the line.
The market wouldn't support a huge dearth of tanks. Smaller tanks are also avoided because they require a complete overhaul of all electronics which adds to the cost which is the problem we are having with designs for the Hetzer. The Tiger is the best seller, whatever way you look at it the market wants Tigers. So Tigers they make. There is already a very good T-34 on the market.
I wonder how many Hobben T-55 are kicking aorund unsold??? Not many would be my guess...
Well I've had 50% of my T55 stock sitting static (no pun intended) for over a year now I believe. Shops in Europe gutted the kits and sold off the tank itself at cut price. Other retailers grew desperate and broke the kits for parts. The only reason I've haven't cut the price by 50% to get rid of shelf grippers is because I am stubborn.
I am not denying it is a pile of money to produce one of these things. All the more reason to listen to the market and produce something they want.
Except the market doesn't want it, nor could it support it. If you want these tanks make them. Most would only complain that they were not 100% up to standard anyway.
Tamiya is still king with ships, but that's where they started so it's important.
Not really, Trumpeter have been steadily throwing out new ships that are very good for years now, surpassing the limited number of large scale ships Tamiya has with no problems. Every large scale ship they have released was also released at a smaller scale 1:700. They also released a number of ships Tamiya never thought to do such as American WW2 carriers. They should have a 1:200 Bismarck soon. Dragon have also released a number of very good ships generally better than Tamiya. Tamiya re-released their Yamato with a price tag that has tripled but also released a few other Japanese ships. Most of Tamiya's ship line, like a lot of their model tanks including their "new" releases stems back to the days when a core of Japanese model makers shared moulds. Most of the companies have move on, Bandai for example or sold out to the Chinese Gunz Sangyo as an example with really only Tamiya and Hasegawa left. In a nutshell the markets you speak of don't really exist. It would be like playing russian roulette in world of tanks picking some random tank in the hope it would sell. Only to realise after you invested everything that it doesn't sell because the people who keep companies like Heng Long afloat didn't really want or have heard of a fugly British tank.

RE: Hen long, asiatam and taigen
Heng Long produced the tanks. I am not sure how reliable the source is regarding selling off moulds, it would seem to be a rather drastic move and the death knell for the company itself. I suspect however, that TaiGen are a subsidary of Heng Long. The business of manufacturing is very convoluted, a brand and a company do not always manufacture the products that they sell. If this is the case then chances are both sets are produced on the same assembly line. This makes sense since the tanks are painted complete rather than in parts. Asiatam designed and contracted a factory to produce their designs, the time period for this expired leading to TaiGen being able to sell the same products themselves or perhaps they just broke their contract I suspect the former . This has led to their aftermarket parts being released as well the TaiGen tank range. The TaiGen tank range was also previously sold under Asiatam and can currently be found rebranded under various other companies. I mentioned this some time ago on "another" forum who then sent abusive PM's to me regarding the Waltersons items. Dan for the most part TaiGen tanks come with identical electronics as Heng Long. From a general market point of view the TaiGen tank is better, the paint job actually looks relatively decent in the flesh and if you were a customer and had the choice between the Heng Long Tiger I and the TaiGen Tiger I of the same spec, then the TaiGen would win everytime. At the moment only the Tiger I is available with the upgrades. This is mostly due to the way the market is and how TaiGen works. You can, should you have the ordering ability order a tank to your own specifications. We stock the Tigers, Panzer III's Panzer IV's, Snow Leopards and Bulldogs. Although I don't often stock the tanks themselves as they have never really been financially viable. TaiGen will probably be chucking their new boards and receivers into future tanks, this has been confirmed to me for the Sherman and Leopard and the new Torro Tiger I is also fitted with this board. As a model maker in general Tamiya hasn't been number 1 for awhile and is behind a number of Chinese companies. The latter are producing lots of new models on a monthly basis using the latest manufacuring technology. Tamiya has pretty much limited their entire range to releasing models whose moulds are older than I am. Typically Tamiya model kits don't sell well. As a RC tank manufactuerer they haven't been number one for a long time. Very few companies stock them due to the cost of the kits. Quite a few companies in the UK recently slashed their prices to dump Tamiya stock, the largest stockist in the UK as an example. Simply put the market has changed, the old days where someone bought something and kept it running for years are largely gone, my generation pretty much saw to that. In the West we live in a consumer driven economy where low prices and high volume are more important that high price, low volume and high quality. If you would like to discuss reliability drop me an email at Lewis@Panzer-Command.co.uk and I can let you know of some of the problems we've had. Generally speaking Heng Long, TaiGen, Mato or WSN have average reliability records. TaiGen have released their new system which only time will tell about and Mato are always looking to improve their products. *Edit* I don't think it is TaiGen raising those prices, I suspect it is your distributor.

RE: Heng Long Proportional Smoker revisited
The OZ armour smoker is upside down which is why it looks different. The proportional smokers are OK but they have a vastly higher DOA rate than the normal smokers. Running wise, if you get one that works, they work quite well.

RE: Zimmerit Kit From RCTankwars?
One of my tanks has it and it is quite good. It is a very simple way to add zimm and the only real downside is it is a little thick to be scale perfect. We currently have them in stock and ship to the US and Canada if you have difficulty finding them in your area.

RE: Any movement in the Hooben camp?
It's really sad that a company has to suspend a product already in production to wait on and to watch for their return profits. Not only that but to announce future products at the same time.
I am not entirely sure what you want them to do, continue to make kits until they go insolvent? The Maus and E-100 were not announced recently but a long time ago, last time I checked with Hooben they were not going to be producing these tanks anytime soon and as far as I know nothing has changed. I am not entirely sure why you would remove their products based on the Maus and E-100 expected release dates which were never announced, I have the opposite problem they won't leave me alone . They are not perfect kits but then they are still quite good for the money. Unfortunately most of the companies are having trouble shifting products so it is not unique to Hooben. The SLU does seem to have issues, first with production capacity and there has been concerns over quality. I've not had a chance to test the samples I have in stock they are sitting on a shelf somewhere gathering dust. WSN, stopping production? Again? I would take that with a pinch of salt. Put it simply, lots of people talk about wanting new items but very few people are actually willing to buy new items. With the exception of a few who like having a house full of tanks! The 1/6 scene is exactly the same trying to sell new complete models is pretty much a waste of time and most shops just break them and sell the equipment off.

RE: HL ZTZ-99 MBT
For the fuel drum holders you might need to reinforce them as they will probably break with the weight of the drum. The ZTZ tracks are not too bad, plastic versions were moulded with the rubber pads on them and the metal versions without. No removable pads, it was looked into briefly but I guess it would add too much to the cost. The one in Beijing I believe was/is part of a museum stand so probably sitting for awhile, i've seen steel flash rust in hours in Thailand so it is possible the humidity is the culprit.

RE: HL KV-2 turret
I suppose the simplest thing to do if one wanted to know what it is and where it came from would be just to email the vendor selling it........
For the most part they wouldn't tell you or give you a generic answer. Usually I just ask the main manufacturers, it is not a big business and most of it is consolidated in one location. Plus the Chinese tend to answer emails very quickly whereas some of the German companies don't if at all.

RE: Looks Like Wecohe is back
So it's just another name for a sales (point of sale) tax. Thanks for explaining.
Yes that is correct. As a foreign buyer you have to pay local VAT, you can claim this VAT back though, much like you can when you go on holiday. Whether the seller can offer with or without the local VAT depends on their individual tax and business tax is set up. In the EU we also pay German tax, but we do not have to pay VAT when the item lands in the UK, as it was paid in an EU member state.

RE: HL KV-2 turret
Lewis is far more knowledgeable about these things than I am
Oh stop it you will make me blush! Basically the way things like this work is a company will supply all the research material, drawings etc to the manufacturer. The m anufacturer produces a knock up prototype and upon this the decision is made to make the moulds. These are paid for by the customer in addtiion to MOQ and a usual time lapse agreement before the manufacturer can sell the item themselves. With this in mind their is a good chance the StuG IV, like many of the Asiatam parts were designed by Asiatam and then manufactured by what is now TaiGen. Design element faults could then be attributed to Asiatam and manufacturing flaws and faults to the factory. Although they may have used a different manufacturer it seems unlikely. It can be a risky business as some factories have a nasty habit of cutting the initial customer out and producing items themselves. The costs to create products, coupled with quantities involved is very expensive hence why Asiatam parts tended to be higher priced. Generally the time frames I've been quoted are around two years exclusive access to parts. The MOQ quoted to me was very high, to the point where selling that quanitity of parts would be very difficult if not impossible for a smaller company. I am hoping that a Soviet KV-2 turret will be available shortly but that is speculation only.

RE: HL KV-2 turret
Hi guys, It is a factory produced item and not a custom job. So fit and wiring should be rather simple, although I do not have one to hand to test (that may change). Any new product is a good one as it shows there is still investment. Although I will agree it is an odd choice but I presume a standard KV-2 turret (whatever version) will be available. I believe KV-85 turrets were cast and similar in form and function to the IS turret so it would take a styrene frame and lots of putty. Not my idea of fun!

RE: KV-2 covered in chains....pattoncommander view with caution!
Tend to prefer steel rope myself but even that has plenty of dangers. Doesn't really matter what type of item you are using for moving heavy loads I would say they are all equally dangerous. Plenty of fishermen still lose limbs working with rope and there are still plenty of lifting accidents in the oil and gas industry with loads.

RE: 21st Century Sherman
They are the Jericho Trumpets. You ever watch those old films where you see a Stuka dive bombing and it makes that horrible wail the props are part of the noise. I can't remember if they actually made the noise or if they fed a siren itself. The noises used in films for crashing airplanes is usually based on these although I'm pretty sure planes don't wail like that when they go down.

RE: 21st Century Sherman
There are a few smaller dealers that can be found on the web that are based stateside, the only 21st century items I sell are their 1/6 scale items on my second shop and these I import from the US or on occasion, China. Some of the original factories that made the 21st century items occasionally do a run of the various items. Of the original items that are available the most often re-runs include half tracks, Tigers and Shermans. Forces of Valor released a Tiger and Sherman under their Bravo team brand but I am pretty sure these are re-runs of the original 21st Century items. The Stuka, Spitfire and the ME-109s are fairly rare and the Stuka is much sought after. Next to the Tiger the Stuka must be one of the most remembered pieces of equipment Germany had. Tank wise there are a couple of Panthers that are quite rare as well as a US truck thingy (can't remember the name). Scale is always frustrating although 21st went with the original scale, 1/32 which was the same as the original Airfix kits from the UK.

RE: My newest Modern Armor Addition.
It is a very nice tank, some pics for those interested: Quite easy to add pictures and a pretty border. Quite a lot of room inside the tank, it helps that the smoker is fitted to the upper. The after market tracks (metal) that are availble currently do away with the rubber pads although a set that has removable pads may be in the works.

Very nice, I just lost out on their Vietnam Patton. A shame really as it looks quite good. I purchased myself a 1/18 21st remake of the Bradley to go with my RC M113A2 also quite nice. Some of the rarer 21st stuff can be quite pricey as I have to ship it from the States. Still on the list is a 1/6 Stuart and perhaps a off scale Bradley or 1/9 Abrams to go with my offscale M8 Greyhound. :)

RE: The Comet ... what we need in 1/16!
Curious to know how you decided that a cold war tank would sell better then a British WWII tank or the mulitude of other WWII armor that has not been done yet. I am curious, who exactly does make up the Heng Long market, and why would they prefer a cold war tank over a WWII tank? IS there some reason their major market who I guess we are not a part of wants a cold war tank? RCtanker put together a pretty good list of all the WWII armor that has not been done, and there are some good examples of tanks that IMO would sell well.
Possible and May I said no definitive decision. There are a large number of tanks that were used in countless theaters other than WW2. Simply put while there may be a big number of possible tanks that doesn't mean they will be popular or even worth doing. There are no reasons to force ourselves into the WW2 bracket and stick there. It might not make the people who battle day but for others it would be appreciated. Take the Centurion for example, a large number of variants from a tank that saw service in Korea, Vietnam and extensively in the middle east. How many Comets do you really foresee selling? The mainstays have been covered from the German and US side of things, we have a smattering of Soviet armour so that only leaves British and Japanese. Both countries had trouble actually making a combat worthy tank, although Britain got there in the end. If you concentrate the market in one time period, now 67 years ago you will eventually run out of customers with modern generations. If you choose to spread the market out then the aftermarket side of it will also expand. You ask about the market, the market is mainly made up of impulse buyers, people who buy toys for their kids or gifts for him at Christmas. While enthusiasts do make up some of the market and may buy more than one tank there are far less than many people obviously think. Although there are many more who are not on the forums at all. I've seen the sales figures for the main Heng Long distributor in the UK, as well as two other companies that are also on the higher end of the list. The market has always been this. If you took away the RC element then you would be left with modellers only unless the tanks were all finished like the FOV items. A lot of people who buy spares from me tend to fall in this bracket, a lot of my larger customers tend to be people who have had a tank given to them as a gift and have gotten into the hobby that way. If your source is Mato, Mato don't tend to put out their feelers very much and for the most part don't really care about other retailers. When i talk about the King Tiger I talk about my own sales performance and the other companies selling it in the UK. It is worth pointing out that the King Tiger was released in the middle of the recession. My sales of higher price items has dropped with people preferring to buy one or two little things at a time. I can't say about the US or Canada or in fact anywhere outside of the UK but the main distributor for Heng Long in the UK has not imported any new tanks since the Panther/Jagdpanther so the StuG, ZTZ or KT never made in numbers over here. The ZTZ-99 was never officially released outside of China, in fact other than a few retailers in the UK it is never seen in numbers. Even Mato were not going to offer it for sale internationally. Any numbers will be will not be very useful because of this. I stopped importing them after an entire batch turned out faulty because Heng Long wired them wrong. Although this was a fluke and I may order more in if the demand is there (it's not). You have focused a lot on what I said about Cold War Era tanks, what I actually did what forward around 20megs of compressed photographs of a large number of potential projects. Included in this were the main British tanks that saw combat during WW2 but also the Centurion, Chieftain, Challenger, Challenger 2 and Warrior. I also included photographs and information on a number of Russian tracked vehicles including the T-72 up to the T-90 (I skipped the T-62 and T-64) and various BMP's. I also included the modern US vehicles including Pattons up the M60, Abrams and Bradley and for kicks the LAV. If the modern side ever really caught on then I would perhaps look at the earlier M113 (always a good seller) and perhaps the derth of Britsh vechicles. If the range of tanks were there for Cold War and modern engagements would people not make use of them? Cold War and modern armour have always been quite popular in smaller scales and Tamiya obviously agrees since some of their first large scale tanks were the Leopard and Gepard. When I give advice to them I don't think about what I like, I put forward other peoples ideas with the chances of commerical success. We know what Heng Long are producing and I know the next five projects from Mato one of which is my pet project I have been harassing them for months to do and there is also my other pet project that has been sitting on the burner for awhile. Mato and the others are well aware of the dangers of producing random tanks. Just for you... http://www.blogcdn.com/www.wowinsider.com/media/2008/11/az_siege_engine.jpg

RE: King Tiger/E-75 Hybrid Build.
This is something that always bothered me about the small turret that was supose to go on the panther f, The turret was not much bigger than the turret ring so there was no weight to lever aganst a big gun sticking out the front.....this is a mian rason I am not using that turret on my e50 build.
And yet that turret was designed specifically for the KwK42 L/100 with the option of the 88 L56. The Germans frequently modified larger guns to fit inside the tanks turret including the Tiger's 88 L56. The Russians were also quite good at turning field guns into tank guns and generally their turrets were more cramped than German ones. The E75 was designed for the gun he mentions and also for a possible up gun to the 10cm. At the time of the designs the Germans were also working on gun stabilisers, autoloaders and night vision equipment. Regardless, the OP mentioned he was doing it for fun, not to be taken apart from rivet counters. Nice going so far Baron, if you need any pictures let me know, I have an E75 in my World of Tanks garage I can screenshot from any angle you need :) I think it has a 12.8cm gun on it at the moment though.

RE: Oversee's Delivery timeframe to US
One of the issues I have is the USPS is not very good. We randomly have packages take 6 weeks to arrive to their destination in the USA when they should only be taking 6-10 days. Of course being the size America is it could be the landing point for the mail is on the other side of the country from the recipient. Tracking information varies, sometimes it is not scanned and sometimes it is. If the company shipping the item has said priority takes 4-6 weeks then it is not going priority. Unless of course they are quoting the maximum rather than expected.

RE: The Comet ... what we need in 1/16!
I am sure that KT they put out is flying off the shelves..................not
I've not had any problems selling the KT by Heng Long and neither has any other company in the UK, in fact one of the bigger importers of this tank is flying through their stock.
Listening to what the market wants can not be a bad thing can it????.
A few people on an RC forum where the RC Tank part of said forum appears to be the minority is not their market. While I would love to see Britsh WW2 armour I've recently advised Mato not to make them. Simply put none of the tank manufacturers can afford a flop right now. A comet may appeal to a small minority of enthusiast but you/we are not the main buyers of these tanks. It is an easy mistake to make, you like tanks. You spend a lot of money on tanks so therefore you must be the market. Unfortunately it doesn't work that way. It doesn't seem to matter how many times it is stated these threads continually pop up. At the moment I've given some of the companies a number of possible suggestions that may sell well, most of which are post war tanks from the Cold War era as well as modern MBT's. There is little point in a company releasing a tank that has been done which is why I was wondering why HL are doing a Leopard 2 so I am trying to either get new tanks that can fit tanks currently in production or for new tanks completely that have never been done before.

RE: Storing a tank when not in use
Yep tracks off the ground here as well. Although only on my heavier tanks.
