Definitely a Sachs Dolmar. These old orange case engines were bruits in their day.

RE: Installing a smoke system.
The Sullivan Skywriter will be your best bet on pumps. B&B makes a smoke muffler/manifold that is fairly cheap, Bold Muffler makes a pitts style smoke muffler designed for the G-23. Super-Dri is the best smoke fluid on the market, but diesel fuel, transmission fluid, and kerosene cut at 33% does pretty well. you need to use Neoprene tubing from the muffler and Tygon everywhere else. Make sure your smoke tank is much smaller than your fuel tank. Good-luck

I've been running Citgo since 1985 when I moved up to giant scale gas engines. Since a few years ago not being able to find Citgo 2stroke, I switched to Pennzoil and have been pleased with it. It helps that its readily available at Advance Auto for a $1.19 a bottle which makes one gallon of gas.

Raised rivets are made with dots of glue while countersunk rivets are made with a wood burnishing tool, not difficult, but time consuming (for me anyway).

I'm not saying my club is full of Topgun pilots, but its rare to see a crash, meaning something other than a quick field repair. There's only a handful in my club that fly Giant Scale over 90" w/s and I'm the sole WWII giant scaler, but we do have the occasional dumb thumb.

RE: 1/3 Harvard/Texan Project
A 1/3 scale Texan would be somewhere around a 16ft. w/s, that would be sweeeeet, my kind of size. A 3W 275 would fly it fine, if your ich, a Moki 400 would do it. Definitely Sierra retracts converted to electric. Enlarging Nick Ziroli plans would be easy, the hard part would be the cowl and canopy. Good-luck with that project.

Agaperacingandhobby.com out of Richmond VA.has a complete RcXcel ignition that will convert your mag to ignition. This conversion is easy to do and will reduce some of the weight associated with mag ignitions. As stated above, you cant just change the plug, the whole assembly needs to be installed.

PM me, I'll send you two 10/32 clipnuts. They just slide on the metal plates and the screw goes right thru them held on with a selflocking nut. Its fool proof. After about ten years the nuts start to wear and all you do is run a 10/32 tap thru them and your GTG (good to go).

RE: Byron/Century Jet retract Drop in replacement
ORIGINAL: RC11 Hello fellow Warbird Pilots, I recently inherited a 30 year old semi-constructed Bud Nosen Mustang complete with Byro Drive and Byron/IronBay pneumatic retracts. I am opting to retrofit some of the old school stuff for the latest and greatest goodies of the day. Many options are available in motors since the days of the screaming Rossi 60 turning its guts out to drive a 24'' 4 blade prop. There is also new electric retracts comming into vogue. I am currently looking at Century Jet for a drop in electric replacement retract for the Byrons. I would also really like to be able to turn a big Solo 4 blade prop. To be of a scale size the prop would have to be of the 30'' variety but I think there will have to be some allowances made to accomodate the proper power to weight motor. I am leaning towards the ZDZ 90 and maybe a 24ish Solo prop tuned to the proper pitch. I would like to hear your thoughts on resurecting this old ''War Horse''. Thanks much, Rick
You already have the gear that fits, why spend extra $$$? Just send them to Mitch and he'll convert the ones you have and there will be no question as to mods to making them fit.

RE: Zenoah G-38 Prop Hub/Flywheel Problem
ORIGINAL: flyinwalenda When you do that is the flywheel actually ''rocking'' side-side on the crankshaft or is the flywheel and crankshaft moving together in&out or front to rear a little bit A worn key or keyway would cause side-side movement on the crankshaft while the in&out movement is end-play and if severe could be a failing bearing or wear of case where the bearing fits. Was the engine in any crashes or did it experience any severe prop strikes when taking off or landing? Zenoah's are pretty tough engines. I have a few and never had any bearing issues. Seems the worst that happens to them is a bent crank after a severe crash.
The last sentence pretty much sums it up, fly the crap out of it as long as the crank is'nt bent.

RE: Zenoah G-38 tips?
You cant go wrong with a Zenoah, they've been around for decades. The G-38 is probably the easiest hand starting of the Zenoahs. They are far from powerhouses, but are definitely the most reliable engines on the market. A Dynatron will spin the crap out of it, but not necessary as the will hand start. B&B Specialties makes a spring starter for it if you want to go that route. The best prop is a Xoar 18X10 depending on aircraft and 18 ounces of fuel is plenty, a 20oz. tank might be easier to obtain. Without starting an oil war, Penzoil aircooled oil from Advance Auto is all you will need, 4oz. to a gallon of gas or 32:1 ratio is all you need. Zenoah makes a manual kill switch thats already wired up for it, but there are other avenues you might want to take. The stock muffler is optimum, no sense going crazy with aftermarket mufflers. Good-luck with it.

RE: Engine suggestion for 1/4 Cub
I'd suggest a Zenoah G-23, it has a mag so no worries about another battery to charge. Its a Zenoah so its extremely reliable and will last forever. Its alittle heavier than the chinese engines so you should'nt have to add dead nose weight. It runs all day on a 14 oz. tank and will fly a 1/4 Cub at scale speeds. And yas, they hand start.
