also just rember the punch control is only off the line... so once you get going you're gunna loose the softend punch feel once you move up in the trigger position.
I thought the punch control limited the speed (internally) at which the ESC outputs upto full power? Would it matter if the vehicle is already moving? I have mine set at max punch control and the lowest timing setting and I still can have to be cautious with my trigger finger when I drive on our dirt track.
1) Smaller pinion for more power? 2) Is the grub screw coming loose because I am overgeared or is it just a lame grub screw (all Robinson Racing)?
Your gearing should be fine, just keep checking the motor temps. With brushless, you have more room for adjusting gearing. My neighbor has that gearing in his BX with a CC SW 4600. He is very quick off the line and fast at top end. You might try some lock-tight on the grub screw. Make sure you let it dry before running it.
how's that 2.4 ghz been working out? The range and glitching with my stock radio is starting to cause me problems and I was giving some thought to that Tower unit.
Its great! It doesn't have special features, but for range, I can drive waaaay farther than I can see what I am doing, and the four batteries (instead of 8) seemed to last a long time. I haven't had glitching problems at all. The only time I melted a diff was when I thought my slipper was slipping and I kept tightening it, when it was really my diff slipping. I was powering out of sharp turns on an asphalt road course.

RE: On a cycle the batteries only show taking 625mah
I bought 6 batteries from All-Battery. After contacting them twice for replacements, on the third time they just sent me six new ones. After running all 10 of them for over a year now, one is finally pooping out. All Battery has treated me very well and I will buy some more from them again. They aren't the most powerful batteries, but they are affordable. I am running them with my brushless now so they are getting a workout.

How much advancement to our current battery technology do you think the $2.4 Bajillion dollars will bring? Is there anything that promising out there? It sounds like this is just for manufacturing, and the US is not nessesarily the most cost effective place to do that.

RE: Discharging NiCds w/ a Tower 420
That Tower charger is a fixed 5 amp charger. Its really too high for a 1500 mah battery. The Venom charger will be much better, read the manual again and learn to use it. For those batteries, don't charge at higher than 1.5 amps (even lower is easier on them). You really don't need to fully discharge the batteries except maybe every couple months. Just using them normally will be enough discharge to excercise any memory out of them.
Just wanted to take a minute to thank all the contributors to this thread. There is an overwhleming amount of info here and it has become an invaluable resource, glad I stumbled on it.
I just noticed that was your first post. Welcome to the Forum! With all the things you've done, I thought you were an old hat with the Evader.
I was thinking of going with a cheap EZ-Run brushless set up but also was looking at the Check Point Money brushed motor. I don't need a lot of speed and would like to keep the tranny the same with out having to mod it. Speed wise I would like 25 to 30 MPH, I think this is possible with out having to mod the tranny. Any advise would be helpful!
If you have some way to get the commutator cut inexpensively, then the Money 19t is a great motor. Get a comm brush and keep it clean. My son still has my old Money Motor in his buggy and he is happy with it. I loved it in my truck. You should get the speed you want with that motor, it is a great match for the stock Evader. Brushless has it's advatages though. More power at low end and no maintenance required. It is a good investment. I run my BL with both Tenergy NiMH and Zippy Lipo. You can't drive like a maniac with BL, though, you'll tear stuff apart and smash into things before you know it. I am looking at the EZRun 8.5t or 10t for the next motor for the buggy. For $106, looks like you can't go wrong. For jumping better, get the 30 wt oil. And with a better motor, your nose will come up when you keep the gas on while in the air. If you are really heavy in the front, you can cut the foam in the back of the battery pack to move the battery back some.

I wouldn't expect the batteries to be very good after storage for a few years with no use. You should long-term store them with around a 50% charge and then cycle them every couple months.

Yes, I have already cut the windshield out of my son's buggy to cool the ESC because the body fits so tight. My ST seems to get plenty of air through it. Maybe I need to intall an air conditioner and compressor. Maybe some dry ice or liquid nitrogen. Maybe I need to move to Alaska.

Our track (and the asphalt) is even hotter. Too much radiant heat coming up into the cars. We got some driving in last week, though. How are you liking the Lipo? Did you get a top speed estimate yet?

We have been dealing with hot motors, ESCs, and batteries. It seems that the track temperatures have the most effect on our vehicles. They stay pretty cool if we get out early in the morning, but its just too hot by 10:00am.
Awesome.. thank you very much for taking a time to get that to me. Any suggestions on what else I should pick up with one or two of these.. like a balancer. I have a MRC Super Brian 977, which I know will charge a lipo, but won't balance it. So what sort of maintance do these bats need. Again thanks for the help.
Yes, you should get a balancer. You should also consider getting a hard case Lipo, especially if you drive on dirt. A little rock could get under the pack and puncture it when you jump. http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=8357&Product_Name=ZIPPY_Flightmax_4000mAh_2S1P_25C_Car_Lipoly
Any suggestion on some good packs that are not overly priced.
I have a couple Zippy Lipo car packs. I've had them since April and don't have a lot of cycles through them. They were an affordable option for trying Lipo but I don't run (or charge) them too hard. They were $28. I got a 3S for fun, it was $47. They were cheap so I don't expect too much from them. They will make your Mamba come alive.

No, I don't have a temp gun, so I should probably re-calibrate my finger. [:)] I am pretty sure that the problem IS with the track temperatures and the air temperatures. I no longer believe the gearing is the problem.

Venoms aren't the best. Zippys aren't the best either. Yet, I think the Zippy will perform better and definitely give you more off-the-line punch.

RE: Can You Undergear Brushless?
Thanks for the info. I'll keep the 17 on for a while and keep checking and maybe go back to the 18 since that is what I like. I guess the real problem is the air temperature. Yesterday, it was 90 degrees at 9:00am and topped-out at 109 degrees here. Only supposed to be 106 today. Those kinds of temps aren't very conducive to electrics. It is like a blast furnace. I usually bring a small computer fan and hook it up to an old NiMH battery pack to cool the motors/ESC during our breaks. That helps a bit, but there isn’t a lot of shade so it is even hotter on the track. We drive laps around our track, which is dusty and slippery right now. Most of the time we race (informal) around and call out different routes, but we are usually always driving fast when we are there. Maybe this link of our track video will work. http://west-roseville-offroad-rc.googlegroups.com/web/dusty+track.wmv?hl=en&gda=Ez-CgkEAAAC0JGXm84s9475eGoXWFfV6FtbDBViJlRm6Aua5Ar5y8DAnpIuKzghlIcwfi3ni0GFTCT_pCLcFTwcI3Sro5jAzlXFeCn-cdYleF-vtiGpWAA
